Israel—Cultural Gaps

laitman_590In the News (Israelinfo): “A study conducted recently by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), revealed one of the main causes of the ‘two-speed’ development of Israel—one foot is in the edge of the 21st century, and the other mired in inefficient old-style economy. It is the deep cultural differences between the major sectors.

“Researches investigated the abilities of OECD citizens of 29 countries on three points: mathematical literacy, reading comprehension and problem solving with the help of technical means.

“For all these measures, Israel was below the average of the OECD countries. … Israel is at the level of Chile, Turkey, Greece, Spain and Italy. …

“The highest score was achieved by men of Ashkenazi origin from the central part of Israel with parents with higher education.”

My Comment: It all the depends on the importance of education. In the Israeli branch of the Bnei Baruch organization, almost all the children go to university and graduate with a second degree even before they join the army at the age of 18!

Psychologists Against Nature… And The Wisdom Of Kabbalah

Laitman_088In the News (Slon): “Science journalist Matthew Hutson describes in his article in the latest issue of Nautilus Publishing, how scientists have recognized that our ‘default mode’ – is rather selflessness, not selfishness. …

“Willingness person to cooperate with the other can be determined in an experiment called public-goods game… .

“After analyzing ten such experiments, in 2012, Harvard researchers Martin Novak and Joshua Greene found that in most cases people showed selflessness and evolved into a common fund, despite the risk of being left with less money (because you never know what the rest of the players will do). …

“Scientist David Rand from Yale demonstrates the same principle that, acting “from his heart,” man acts unselfishly. He conducted a meta-analysis of more than fifty studies on this topic and confirmed this conclusion. …

“The experiment, which Rand subjected their virtual heroes, was a sophisticated implementation of a prisoner’s dilemma. …

“Back in the 1980s, American political scientist Robert Axelrod, engaged in agent-based modeling, determined that the most probable strategy of behavior in the game, based on the scenario of this dilemma would be the so-called principle of “you give me, I tell you.” That is, everything will begin with cooperation between the prisoners, and all subsequent rounds will be based on the previous behavior of one of them (if one decides to betray the other, the latter will no longer shield him as he again did not make a step forward). …

“Rand also created a population of agents to look at the evolution of their behavior, with single or multiple rounds. In the case of a single round success agent promised a betrayal of his partner; in the case of multiple, it made sense to think about long-term cooperation with them. …

“In one of his other experiments Rand discovered another interesting trend in human behavior. During this experience, participants first played in the prisoner’s dilemma: one group participated in multiple rounds (where, respectively, cooperation prevailed), the other – in a single (in which betrayal often happened). This was followed by playing ‘the public goods game’ with them. It turned out that those who were in the dilemma of cooperating with others, in the second part, invested in the common fund of greater amounts. It turns out, according to Hutson, the norms of human behavior changed during the experiment. This shows that in a world where the pattern of behavior of ‘every man for himself’ (as, for example, it is customary in American corporate culture) is encouraged, it is possible to change the situation. For starters, you can at least introduce a system of incentives and mutual cooperation among employees. Selfless behavior strengthens as a strategy of behavior even in an uncertain situation (for example, when you do not know whether you can trust your partner completely), and as a result becomes the new norm… .”

My Comment: These opinions are completely contrary to the wisdom of Kabbalah, to common sense, and the experience of humanity.

In an exchange of letters between Einstein and Freud in 1932, Einstein asked Freud if there were any possibility of directing the development of human beings in such a way that they would be more resistant to psychoses of hatred and destruction?

Part of Freud’s reply to Einstein was “The organism preserves its own life, so to say, by destroying an extraneous one. … For our immediate purpose then, this much follows from what has been said: there is no use in trying to get rid of men’s aggressive inclinations. We are told that in certain happy regions of the earth, where nature provides in abundance everything that man requires, there are races whose life is passed in tranquillity and who know neither coercion nor aggression.I can scarcely believe it and I should be glad to hear more of these fortunate beings.” …

“Anything that encourages the growth of emotional ties between men must operate against war. These ties may be of two kinds. In the first place they may be relations resembling those towards a loved object, though without having a sexual aim. There is no need for psycho-analysis to be ashamed to speak of love in this connection, for religion itself uses the same words: ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’ This, however, is more easily said than done.”

Freud added, “Wars will only be prevented with certainty if mankind unites in setting up a central authority to which the right of giving judgement upon all conflicts of interest shall be handed over. … (S. Freud, “Why War”)

Workers Are Lazy? The Solution Is In The Circle

laitman_600_02In the News (Russian Baazar): ‘Today, no one is working as 10 and even 50 years ago – said Dirk Samelson, owner of a small diner in California. – I have been in business for nearly 70 years and have never seen such a number of slow-moving workers. Cleaners, waiters, cooks – they are constantly distracted by smartphones or empty talk. I do not know what’s going on with this country.’

“The technological revolution and the popularity of electronic devices has led to a sharp drop in the labor productivity of Americans. People have begun to move more slowly, and the sense of responsibility and discipline has declined significantly. That is the conclusion reached by experts at CareerBuilder Resource as a result of a large-scale survey of employers. Today, one in five managers believes that his subordinates engaged in professional duties less than 5 hours within a standard 8-hour day. …

“Employers complain that their subordinates pick up their smartphones every 15 – 20 minutes. Prohibiting the use of phones during business hours, does no good. People are offended or they easily dismiss the rule or they make discrimination claims to the authorities. …

“55% of Americans use smartphones during the working day. Most often they use the Internet, studying the weather, read news, play, do shopping, send SMS-messages and rewritten in social networks. Stopping the practice of using a smartphone is impossible because workers try to do it secretly.

“39% of employees spend time on banal chatter. …

“Almost 27% of workers have a responsible attitude to their duties, but they are constantly interrupted by other colleagues. Busy people are being drawn into the conversation, forced to discuss movies and music and so on. At the same time, Americans are often ashamed to utter the phrase ‘I’m sorry, but I need to work,’ and obediently listen to non-performing peers.

“More than 27% of Americans severely abused breaks, referred to as smoke break (a smoke) and snack break (snack). A person takes 5 – 6 such breaks daily and loses at least half an hour (the official time for lunch does not count). ”

My Comment: People are not to blame; egoism is developing and they have no choice. The only solution is educating workers according to the circle method our organization has developed. See “the wisdom of the circle.” This is a method that can be recommended to everyone.

The Jerusalem Post: “Beyond Black And White In America”

My article recently published in the Jerusalem Post and Ynet.

Civilians Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota; Dallas police officers Michael Smith, Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Patrick Zamarripa, and Brent Thompson; civilian Delrawn Small in Brooklyn, New York; Michigan courthouse bailiffs Joseph Zangaro and Ron Kienzle have all died this week (at the time of writing this column) in encounters between law enforcement and civilians. Many more have been wounded. Is it not time for a social Marshall Plan to heal the American society?

“We’re hurting… we are heartbroken,” said David Brown, Dallas Chief of Police “All I know is that this must stop, this divisiveness between our police and our citizens.” Brown, who has become the “face” of the tragedy of the clash between law enforcement and civilians in America, knows what he is saying. He has lost his only son, brother, and partner to violent incidents involving police officers and civilians.

In many ways, Brown’s pain stricken face reflects what many Americans feel these days. Since the beginning of the year, 509 people have been killed by police. The American society is growing increasingly violent, and mounting racial tensions, primarily between African-Americans and law enforcement personnel, have reflected that trend with painful clarity.

An Interracial Volcano

Fifty-two years ago this month, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act, and stated that “those who are equal before God shall now also be equal in the polling booths, in the classrooms, in the factories, and in hotels, restaurants, movie theaters, and other places that provide service to the public.” And yet, the racial tensions never fully healed, and today have resurfaced with new ferocity.

Officially, all people—of all races, religions or sexes—are equal in the eyes of the US government. There is even an African-American president. But if you venture away from where tour guides would normally take you, you will discover a different America. Poverty, crime and drug abuse can be seen in broad daylight, and gang wars are routine. In these “hoods,” a sense of insecurity and oblivion take over. This can hardly be the equality that Lyndon Johnson had envisioned when he signed the Civil Rights Act into law.

And yet, the sense of discrimination and injustice within the African-American communities expresses a much deeper process than the government’s attitude toward people based on the color of their skin. All over the world, people are becoming increasingly isolated and self-centered, to the point that today the majority of the population shows at least several symptoms of pathological narcissism. This trend is separating people and communities, and causes hatred and sectarianism. In recent years, intensifying clannishness has erupted and its violent gushes claim ever more victims who fall prey to hatred. If we do not reverse this trend, it can easily result in the outbreak of some form of civil war. America already tasted civil war on the grounds of civil rights for blacks; it should be wise enough to avoid another such trauma.

Nature vs. Nurture

Numerous indicators point to the fact that the self-centeredness rooted in human nature has become too intense and uninhibited to contain. Racism and anti-Semitism are on the rise, social inequality is increasing, economic gaps are widening, and violence and terrorism are spreading throughout the world. Man’s inclination, which is evidently “evil from his youth,” is quickly destroying the foundations of human society.

The solution to this crisis lies not in waiting for the government to sign more laws, but in tapping into the forces that create our evil tendencies toward each other, and changing them at the core. If we look at our education system we will find that it is geared toward unabashed competition. It indoctrinates us into the “survival of the fittest” mindset. But nature does not work this way. Since all parts of nature are dependent on each other for their sustenance, unrestrained competitiveness is, by default, an unsustainable approach.

In nature, the emphasis is on harmony; in humans, the emphasis is on hegemony. If hegemony wins, all of us will lose.

Just as there is a force that separates us from each other, there is a force that connects all parts of nature, including humans. The goal of education should therefore be to introduce the connecting force into the human society. If the separating and connecting forces can exist harmoniously within humanity, we will find peace in our lives. And since our ill-will toward each other is already rooted within us, we need to focus on nurturing the force of connection.

There are many ways to go about introducing this force into the human society, but the key element in building positive connections over our alienation is simply the efforts that we make toward it. In a way, we need to introduce a sort of “positive discrimination.”

Just like violence induces violence, kindness induces kindness. Positive actions invoke the positive force that already exists within us and stir it into action. And just as the separating force makes us see the world as hostile and fragmented, if we activate the connecting force, we will see the world as amiable and connected.

If these words seem unrealistic or naïve, it shows how compelled we are to see the world through our own ill-will.

All the More Reason to Hurry

In 2008, African-Americans had high hopes that the first black president would make things better for them. He didn’t. He couldn’t have. A government can make laws and attempt to enforce them, but it cannot change human nature. This is why the solution to all forms of racism is education and not tougher law enforcement, especially when eradicating racism is not among its goals.

Since the Obama administration came into office, and especially during its second term, the President has engaged extensively in admitting immigrants from North Africa and the Middle East into the US. Unlike African American communities, which are predominantly Christian, the new arrivals are by and large devout Muslims who have no wish to Americanize their way of life and values, which they consider an abomination. Without an intention to assimilate, it will be impossible to integrate them into the local society. In all likelihood, the Muslim migration into the US will ignite even worse religion-based conflicts than we have already seen.

Therefore, alongside the three branches of government—legislative, judicial, and executive—there needs to be a fourth entity, whose purpose is to establish a sound social basis for mutual connection. Such a system should incorporate educators and facilitators of all religions, denominations, cultures and races, who will help facilitate a multicultural society whose highest value is unity above differences.

Even a short-term educational campaign to increase people’s awareness of our inherent connectedness will help us see that we must learn to unite. This effort will invoke our sense of connectedness and will help us see the world through connected eyes, rather than our current, self-absorbed perspective.

The battle against racism is raging everywhere. We have not yet lost, but we have got to act fast, and with resolve, before the rifts grow too deep and wide to bridge.

“UN: Prospects For Peace Between Israel And The Palestinians Are Decreasing”

laitman_273_02In the News (MIGNews): “Special Coordinator of the United Nations for the Middle East peace process Nikolay Mladenov said that a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians can not be achieved against the background of the glorification of terror among the Palestinians and the continuing Israeli settlement activities. In a statement, Mladenov said that Palestinians and Israelis ‘reached the point where many on both sides have lost faith in the commitment to each other in creating a future for the two states, living side by side in peace, security and mutual recognition. In the end, the sad reality for the peoples on both sides of the conflict is that that the things they value most – statehood and security – are escaping them all.’ Mladenov also said that ‘a peaceful future for both peoples can not occur against the background of statements that glorify terrorism and justify murder; mutual respect may not come as a result of stab wounds, shootings and car collisions. Heroes do not kill the sleeping children.’ …

“In the Quartet report, [the UN] said that ‘Israel must stop the policy of settlement construction and expansion, the purposing of land for exclusive use in the interests of Israel and the denial of Palestinian development.’… The report also examines the Palestinian wave of violence, in October that killed at least 214 Palestinians, 34 Israelis, two American. Israel claims that more than two thirds of the Palestinians killed were in response to their attacks against Israelis. The Quartet report angered the Palestinians, who have been frustrated by the fact that both parties have been criticized, not just Israel. … Among the recommendations contained in the report, the Quartet called on Israel to lift its blockade of the Gaza Strip and called for the restoration of the Palestinian Authority control over Hamas ruling the Gaza Strip. Israel maintains a blockade to prevent the attack from terrorist group Hamas against Israel.”

My Comment: While this report was relatively balanced, it is preferable for the UN not to intervene, but first of all to get its house in order. Only then will our neighbors understand that they must agree to the creation of bilateral relationships and not dream of the annihilation of the State of Israel.

Are The Refugees Beneficial?

Laitman_419Comment: According to studies, the Americans have reached the conclusion that the refugees were not a yoke on the neck of the nation that gave them shelter. On the contrary, the monetary help that is given to them will provide a strong impetus to the economy.

However tests were conducted in the camps of refugees from Africa. Assistance was given there in the form of food products. The refugees sold them and that money was invested in the economy of the country.

Answer: In any case, this will not lead to a solution because the refugees must be absorbed and they must adjust to a different life in those nations.

First and foremost, absorption and adaptation must be cultural. This cannot be implemented because according to their religion, according to their infrastructure, according to their intentions and plans, the refugees are completely hostile to the nations that receive them. The refugees are clinging to a precise plan for conquering these nations, to control them and convert them into a caliphate. Therefore all of the talk about their apparent contribution to the prosperity of the economy are just empty words. The Americans are carrying out and activating their policies to soften public opinion at least a little.

The refugees have not brought economic revival or restoration to any nation. They don’t want to work, they don’t want to learn, and they don’t want to be like all the rest of the citizens. And the fact that massive monetary circulation is passing through them whereby the nation gives them money and they return it to the nation through shops could also be done through the citizens of those nations.

Question: Does it follow that they must arrange for the cultural inclusion and education of the refugees because it is no longer possible to prevent the flow of their migration?

Answer: Unfortunately, Europe is “lying down” under them. They are like parasitic bacteria in a good and nourishing environment. This is precisely what is happening today in the continent of Europe.

EU Politician’s Tragic Mistake

Laitman_419In the News(Vestifinance): “The leaders of the 27 EU countries have stated that the freedom of movement of labor is one of the main four freedoms, which should support each country bloc, which wants access to the single market. They also called for Britain to speed up their exit from the EU in accordance with the prescribed rules and sent them a notice of desire to get out of the union as soon as possible, so as soon as such notification is necessary for the formal launch of negotiations on the exit. Without formal notice, negotiations cannot begin. But Cameron wants his successor to formulate a strategy and informed the European colleagues to withdraw before the start of negotiations. …

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the most powerful leader in the EU at the moment, is trying to convince the leaders of other countries to give time to the UK to have the courage to choose a new leader and to begin formal negotiations. However, she expressed tough stance on the issue of access to the European market, noting that London can not select the privileges that it likes. …

“European leaders have recognized the need for change. But they also know that they need time to block the remaining 27 member states to regain their unity within the European Union, as in recent times there are differences, which only worsened as a result of a referendum in Britain. Countries are going to learn from the British experience. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said after the summit that the radical changes seem unrealistic. Among these changes, she called towards fiscal and political union in the current situation. This would require amending the Lisbon Treaty and carry out more referenda, namely that heads of state want to avoid. ‘This is not about unity in Europe, and on the improvement of the results,’ – said Merkel.”

My Comment: The whole problem of the European Union is expressed in these words. In the European Union there never was unity, because attainment of unity is possible only as a result of an ongoing process of education and training for the peoples, and it did not dedicate its attention to this at all.

They must recognize the difference between an “alliance of banks and industries of the nations of Europe” and an “alliance between peoples.” These concepts should not be confused. Here is the tragic mistake of the politicians of the European Union. They require educators….so the collapse of England is only the beginning of the collapse of the European Union!

Sale Of Nazi Relics

laitman_431_05Comment: Last week there was an auction in Munich in a special antique shop and 169 Nazi relics were sold, among them personal items that belonged to Hitler, Goring, Eva Brown, and others. All the items were sold instantly.

In addition to that, not only sales of the book Mein Kampf are growing, but the history of Nazi Germany is being openly published now. Why do people need these things?

Answer: There is a great demand in Europe for anything that is related to WWII because it is about the people’s past. It is related to their fathers, their grandfathers, and their great grandfathers.

If we don’t correct people and don’t re-educate them ,they will certainly develop egoistically, which is actually the way we all develop, and they will look for these old relics in order to strengthen their hearts.

This is also the reason that new Nazi parties will emerge, and we cannot escape it. Nothing will help stop this process except for the proper education, the right approach to this question! Humanity actually wants to stop the re-emergence of Nazism, but it will be impossible because the natural evolution of the ego will lead us back to national socialism.

Question: On the one hand, you say that we need the right education, and the other hand, you add that it is already impossible to implement it in Europe. How can all this be connected?

Answer: Education is the answer, but who will engage in it?!

Only our organization Bnei Baruch, which was specifically founded for this goal. But this requires very serious work including the participation of thousands of our members all over the world who should start giving courses in every language and reach everyone through the media.

Because this is such a serious problem, these studies must be compulsory for all! Without the correction of the population of Europe, we will not manage to unite it and it will end in the eruption of a new war. I believe that if people truly understand the impending threat, they will be ready to deal with it.

“I Have Created The Evil Inclination”

laitman_571_08Comment: Research shows that people are basically ready to cooperate with others, but it is the environment they live in which makes them indifferent and cynical.

Answer: It is human psychology and not the results of a certain experiment.

According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, the ego is the basis of human nature. The Creator said, “I have created the evil inclination; I have created the Torah as a spice,” and that’s all.

This means that evil, egoism, caring about yourself as opposed to caring about others, is living according to the principle that the better off I am, the better I feel compared to others, or rather, the worse they feel, the better I feel, and this the basis of human nature. Human history throughout the ages proves this claim.

Although philosophers and psychologists from Harvard University have come up with their own theory, life proves the exact opposite.

Question: Is it better to say to a person, “you are kind and your nature is based on connections of love” or rather “you nature is basically the ego and this is your starting point?”

Answer: It is always better to speak the truth since it pushes us to start the correction of mankind before it totally deteriorates and loses its humanity! After all, our egoism grows bigger every day, and so the sooner we begin the correction, for which we must reach the recognition of our evil nature, the sooner we will manage to better our life.

If we don’t do that, we will let our egoism erupt in the form of neo-Nazi regimes in most countries and a world war will break out between them.

The great Kabbalist Baal HaSulam in his writings told a parable about training cats to be waiters in order to attempt to prove that their basic nature could be altered. But the moment one of the guests lets out a few mice, all the tamed “waiters” throw the trays they were holding and began to chase the mice.

This is exactly how our nature operates! Therefore, I advise all of us to observe nature and accept it the way it is,

Question: Does this mean that you are in favor of the hard truth?

Answer: Of course, we shouldn’t confuse people. We have to rely on serious knowledge and not on a few random studies, and at the same time we need to change our attitude to nature.

The Difference Between Islam And Muslims

laitman_600_01Comment: From time to time I publish your commentaries on the news on my Facebook page and many write to me and claim that you are confusing Islam and Muslims. Sometimes you make sharp remarks regarding Islam.

Answer: In my commentaries I don’t mean the religion itself but its extremist clerics.

I have nothing against the Islamic religion because after all, thousands of wonderful things were written in the Koran, and as a philosopher, I can say that the Islamic religion is a positive religion at its foundation.

On the one hand, there certainly is an extremist side to Islam, but if it is not artificially inflated, if it isn’t developed and put above all other faiths, it is a religion with which every person in the world can live in peace.

On the other hand, what is presented to us today as the religion of Islam is not really the original Islam.

I have met with many Arab religious leaders, particularly the Sufis who are representatives of the Arab Kabbalah, and I can say with certainty that in the past among them was a very developed aspiration toward love, toward connection between people. But today everything has completely changed. Many contemporary scholars who are involved with this phenomenon have written about it.

In my commentaries I talk about the extremist Islamic religion of our day. You can not be extreme, kill others indiscriminately, and then hide behind religion. There is no connection with this behavior and religion. Everything depends on the way in which you use religion.

The same thing can be said about Judaism. There are many people who promote hatred, while Judaism itself relies on the principle of “And you shall love your friend as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18), and “your friend” is every person near you. This means that everything is inherent in religion but not in the same form that people interpret it.

If you enter into a religious area in Israel, you can see how the religious people move to the side and avoid contact with strangers. That is how they also behave in America in the areas where they live. So it is possible to say the same thing about Islam and even about other religions.

The problem is that today the Islamic religion is flourishing and bears an extremist religious character and there are people who under the guise of religion convey their policies in that way. Of course you can close your eyes to this phenomenon, just as we do with everything else, but it will not make you any safer.

I am not a politician, I am a philosopher, so I am completely neutral and don’t belong to any political party. I express my point of view as a person who studies the wisdom of Kabbalah and understands the evolution of nature, the general internal law and its power, which is called “Allah,” Elyon (higher). The problem is that it is necessary to interpret it correctly. The higher power is the power of love and connection between everyone in the world.

Only then will we see that between true Islam and the wisdom of Kabbalah (true Judaism), there are no differences.
