Attaining Your Inner Essence

36Question: Modern science makes discoveries related to processes in the human brain. How do you explain, in the context of egoism, that neural connections form a person’s behavioral principles?

Answer: But this is only an external manifestation of what we see. Egoism itself is a spiritual property of a person, inner forces in us. There are even more inner forces behind them, which we cannot define at all or even feel in any way. We feel ourselves only in some external manifestation.

I feel my body, warmth, movement, and so on, and that is how I perceive myself. However, I cannot attain my inner essence yet. This is how we exist. Egoism is our most inner force.

The upper force, which is absolute bestowal and love, has created within itself the property opposite to it, egoism. This is why we exist in this way.

The Picture Of The World Is A Consequence Of The Attitude Toward It

423.02Question: Baal HaSulam writes in his articles that egoism is not the same for everyone. There is gross egoism when a person uses it without hesitation and there is a veiled, more developed one, when a person realizes that it is bad and sort of acts secretly. What is the difference, in principle?

Answer: If a person realizes his egoism, then this is good, you can talk to him, discuss that; he can come to some kind of decision: is it right or not, should he be in this property or not?

He can determine that it is evil and try to get rid of it in some way. He sees how this property harms him and makes him rise above others. And this is his whole life.

He begins to understand what he spends precious seconds of existence in this world on. And what if he treated others differently, in a completely opposite manner? Perhaps in doing so he would find such a form of sensation of life which in our world is not perceived by us at all. After all, we are constantly tuned in order to influence, control, rule, and absorb.

And if I set myself up differently, I might be free. Free! First I would not be pressed from behind by this terrible force that guides me like this. I would feel myself in a free space, independent, not connected to anything.

I would begin to see everything around me in a different way – not from the point of view of what threatens my power, self-preservation, security: what should I take possession of, what should I suppress, absorb, crush under myself, and so on, where is everything around in the world? A person only looks like this, initially. Look at young children, how cruel they are, how they treat each other. This is our nature.

And if I began to relate to the world in a different way, I would see a completely different picture of the world around us, which is a consequence of my attitude to it. Now I selectively see only what is good or bad for me. Bad, I have to do something about it; good, I can enjoy it.

But if I had a different attitude to the environment around me, I would see circumstances, objects, and actions of a different type, a completely different world that is called the upper world in Kabbalah.

That is, the perception of the world and what happens to us depends on our focus; the way we look at the world is how the world appears to us. Therefore we need to change ourselves.

Very Simply—About The Spiritual World

537People often ask me: “What is the spiritual world? How can we depict it?” It is very simple. This world is our inner sensation; it seems to us that something is happening outside.

But in fact, everything that happens from the vast universe with all the stars and up to what happens on the surface of the Earth in inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature, and with people, all this is depicted in my desire to enjoy. If I could disconnect my egoistic desire, I would not feel myself or the outside world.

This entire picture revealed inside my desire to receive in its original form, created by the Creator without my work and corrections but only due to the influence from above, is called “this world.” Of course, we feel changes all the time, but they are changes within our desire. This is why it seems to us that the world is moving. In fact, nothing is moving but our impression that changes inside the desire to receive because the desire changes.

This is not the case with the spiritual world. In the spiritual world, I am not only impressed by the upper influence, but I myself act at the same time. If this entire world is the result of the action of the upper force, then the spiritual world is the result of the interaction, the connection between my action and the action of the Creator. The more similar I am to the Creator, the more I reveal the spiritual world as the measure of my equivalence with the upper force.

What Is The Meaning Of Our Reality?

537Question: What is the meaning of our reality?

Answer: The meaning of our reality is that we start revealing the highest true reality inside of it.

It is absolutely opposite to ours, it is based on the property of bestowal, love, and connection. And we, in order to comprehend it, must enter the period of the conflict of opposites.

That is, our egoism opposes us in this, but thanks to its opposition,  called “help against you,” we can cognize the highest reality.

Comment: In the phrase “help against you,” one part kind of cancels the other.

My Response: But it is necessary to realize that it is in this way that we rise above ourselves. But this is not the reality that you see in your egoism. You must begin to feel the second reality, which is higher than egoism. And it is thanks to the opposition of these two realities that you will be able to find the tools to control your destiny.

Question: Do you lead those who begin to study Kabbalah to this concept?

Answer: We lead them there literally from the first lesson. But what they hear and when they begin to perceive and realize it, this really depends on the people.

This is a special language—the language of understanding, the language of internal adjustment to what is said.

Question: So this breakthrough should take place? Do you need to cross this border?

Answer: Yes. It takes a long time. Sometimes ten years or more.

Today this is done in such a world that I think a real person will not be afraid of it. He will understand what is included in serious science. And in order to realize such things in oneself, it really takes several years.

This science is not easy, but it is the science of the foundation of our world. It doesn’t owe you anything, and you don’t owe it anything either. This is the same as studying any technical science: physics, chemistry, no matter what. That is, if you can learn, you can use it. If you can’t, then you cannot. This is your business.

There are no conditions here. There are no entrance exams, nothing. You want to do that? Go ahead. But keep in mind that at best you will still understand that nature is much deeper than we imagine it, and it is so magnificent and endless, not within our understanding, that it is worth trying to reveal it. At the same time, you expand the horizons of your life in time, in sensations, in space, in everything.

Question: You always say that this is the science of life. What do you mean by that?

Answer: This is the science that explains who we are, what we are, why, how we live, and how we exist. And the main thing is the science of who controls us. And this is the most important thing.

Question: And if I feel it, then what will happen to me?

Answer: Then you can control yourself, your destiny.

Come and try it. We do not invite you, we offer this to you.

The Object of Research Is Man

214The problem of modern science is that we have reached a threshold where we can feel, supplement, and control our senses. This is why all scientists say that science has reached its limits.

And Kabbalah says that in our five senses we have practically reached the limit, that we cannot see anything beyond it anymore. We do not need to invent new devices that can only slightly expand our sensory organs but expand the senses themselves.

Science cannot do this because it deals only with mechanical addition to a person. We need to change man himself, to develop him a little from the inside. This is what Kabbalah does.

Therefore, we come to the conclusion that Kabbalah should replace sciences as their continuation, and give an answer to how to expand the limits of our attainment and come to a state where we can develop a person so that one attains greater depths of nature.

In Kabbalah, the object of study is man himself. He can measure his changes by his own instruments, which are inside and not outside of him.

To The Feeling Of A New Nature

234The wisdom of Kabbalah speaks of what we do not feel but what we want to feel and we have the opportunity to. Kabbalah exists in order to introduce us sensually into the sensation of the upper world.

This world, in which the properties of bestowal, connection, and reciprocity reign, is opposite to our world where there are only the properties of rejection, receiving for oneself, and attraction from another of everything that is good and pleasant to me. Moreover, all this is embedded in every object of our world and happens automatically and instinctively.

Thus all the desires of our world are egoistic; all desires of the upper world are altruistic.

And here we need to understand how we can break out of our nature. This is similar to how a spaceship rises, breaks through the Earth’s gravity at the first, second, and even third cosmic speed, and flies away to the stars.

Therefore we must learn how this can be done with ourselves, how we can rise above the field of attraction of our egoism. And this is not just the Earth. Egoism pulls us from all sides in terrible omniscience, all-seeing, at all levels of our understanding, sensation, and awareness.

It works completely inside of us. We are in it. How can we get out of this bitter fruit? It is a big problem to get out of egoism, even to understand this, at least in theory, to agree with what needs to be done, and then find out how we can practically implement it.

I know the way. But at the same time, I cannot help another in any way, except with words. Because everyone has freewill, and each one must realize it. Only in this way can a person rise above oneself and cleave to the Creator.

We can do this with the help of study and causing, by certain actions, the attraction to the upper world on ourselves . We can help each other. But this is all external help. It is also internal, but still external, because I must enter the upper world with my strength, my conviction, my persistence, my burst of energy!

And no matter what we do, even when we create a certain environment of our own kind around us and organize everything as needed, all the same, when a person goes beyond his egoism, breaks away from it like a rocket from our planet toward another cosmic body—each time it’s a miracle.

This is the purpose of our life. What else could it be? To fly like Munchausen, sitting on the core, somewhere on another Earth-like body? And what will happen if we do that? We want to go to another space, to another dimension. It cannot be explained.

But still, we need to push people to read, to study, to work on themselves, because by this we excite a higher power that can pull us out of egoism and push us to the feeling of a new nature.

How A Person Becomes A Kabbalist

143Question: The psychologist in me tries to understand himself and others, to analyze and solve problems, to manage his feelings, and to change his attitude to reality. What does a Kabbalist try to do within himself?

Answer: A Kabbalist finds the sources of perception of the surrounding reality, its boundaries and, by working on himself, pushes these boundaries so far that he begins to see the upper force behind reality, the quality of bestowal and love, opposite to the quality of reception and rejection of everyone and everything, which is inherent in egoism.

In the fight between these two qualities, by preferring bestowal, love, and connection over the quality of separation, reception, and hatred at each stage of spiritual development, a person becomes a Kabbalist. He begins to act not for his own sake, not in order to fulfill his egoism, but for the sake of others, for the sake of spreading altruism.

No Mysticism!

600.02Comment: Nowadays many people say that scientists who go beyond science cross the line of purely scientific research to something mystical. And they would really have a new inner knowledge open up.

My Response: To do this, they must become Kabbalists. And there’s nothing to be afraid of. There is no mysticism here.

We are talking about our five sense organs in which we attain the world around us and build earthly sciences on them, and also how we change ourselves. We broaden our sense organs in order to build another science on them called “Kabbalah.”

This science depends on changing our sense organs, not on the devices that we create to complement the five material sense organs.

A Remedy For Loneliness

294.4Question: Is it possible to heal loneliness?

Answer: Yes. Loneliness is actually a blessing, but we just need to make sure that loneliness doesn’t lead us to all sorts of unnecessary and undesirable consequences. Because if lonely people suffer from their loneliness, they are ready to do anything. They can become radical extremists and so on, and they can also engage in drug abuse and commit suicide.

We need to look at different kinds of loneliness. If it is intellectual loneliness, it is a blessing for a person and for humanity. If it is not intellectual but scientific, it can also be a blessing, although today’s science is conducted increasingly more in groups. But if it is psychiatric, psychological loneliness, it should be looked into and we need to help a person balance it somehow.

Everything depends on whether a person feels comfortable being lonely. When my loneliness is invaded, it is very hard for me. I can stand a person for a while and then I can’t do it anymore. I need to leave, to retire, to be by myself, to be alone.

Question: What is correct loneliness?

Answer: Correct loneliness is that which leads to one’s internal development.

I understand a person as an entity, each one spends part of his time totally on his own, inside himself, contemplating and reflecting on different matters. He spends a small part of his time with others. On the whole he “lies” when he is with others, and tries to make a certain impression and thus acts and presents a different person, not himself.

How can a person not be lonely? It is possible to make him not feel lonely if you educate him correctly. It is possible to educate a person at any age. It means that you need to show him that he can gain from the right form of loneliness.

If he understands that only by the right connection with another person can he reveal the upper world, transcend the boundaries of life and death, of his own existence, it already sounds enticing.

Question: What does the right connection with another come down to and how can it be attained?

Answer: The right connection is when one person seemingly dwells in another. This is what is referred to by “make your desire the desire of another.” By doing so, when I exit myself and dwell in another, which means that I begin to work on the desires of another and to fill them instead of filling my own desires, by using my whole physical and creative potential in order to fill another, I seemingly move to dwell in him. I seemingly begin to feel that life flows through him.

This is a totally different life; this is spiritual life. Why is it spiritual if it is a person like me? It is because I become another by trying to feel him instead of myself, which means that I exit myself. It is as if my body dies, and I with all my intellect move to dwell inside him. This is where a person can exit his own body.

Question: Can it be any other person, like a donor, in order to feel that I am alive, happy and fulfilled?

Answer: Yes. By moving to dwell in another you roam in a totally different space.

Question: And this is the remedy for loneliness?

Answer: It is not only the remedy for loneliness, but the remedy for death. It is a remedy that makes you immortal, in order to attain perfection and to ascend above yourself, above your ego.

Categories Of Nature And Their Attainment

237Question: “Absence” or “nothing” is a category that captures the absence of something. In physics it is called a vacuum. But although a vacuum is the absence of some objects, fields exist in it. And what does the wisdom of Kabbalah mean by the terms “absence” and “existence out of absence”?

Answer: Absence and existence from absence are different things.

Absence is the negation of anything in any place, volume, or space. Therefore if we say “absence,” “none,” or “nothing,” we are simply saying that no forces exist in the place, format, or category in question.

And existence from absence is something that exists. Therefore it is called “being” or “essence.”

Thus there is absence and there is something that has appeared from absence. But how can it appear? To what extent does it exist? What properties does this something have, and who can feel and affirm it at all? Regarding whom and what does it exist?

These are very deep, serious, one might say philosophical questions, but in Kabbalah they are dealt with simply, clearly, and each has its own place.

First we must immediately discuss one of the most serious attitudes: everything we are talking about happens with respect to a person who attains nature and finds in it absence, existence, being, nothing, and so on. It means that any person who makes certain efforts can attain these categories of nature.

Question: So they don’t exist by themselves, outside of a person?

Answer: We cannot talk about what is outside of man at all, even about the Creator, because the upper force of nature is still felt in us. Therefore the Creator in Hebrew is called “Boreh,” “Bo-reh“—”come” and “see.” That is when you come and see, attain it, and define it. This will be called “Boreh” in relation to you.

Question: Is there any term that means a force that cannot be attained and seen?

Answer: If it is impossible to attain and see, then how can you define it? What we don’t feel, we can’t call by any name, and therefore we don’t talk about it.
