The Secret to the Perception the World

761.2Question: Why do we see our world as a physical world? Actually, you say that all this is a field, sparks of light that gather together.

Answer: Our world is forces that affect us and give us a sense of the picture inside us. This is how they are imprinted on the retina of our eyes and in our brain.

It is a light-sensitive material that senses the field of light, its greater or lesser intensity, and thus reproduces a picture. That is, these are fluctuations of light, and you extrapolate or decipher the resulting picture in your own way.

If you bring a small child or a dog into a room, for them it will be a completely different world than the one you see. You see walls, ceiling, paintings, and whatever, and they do not see that. It all gathers together for you in a picture of some interior, but not for them.

That means that you decipher the picture according to your Reshimot. But in fact, it is just the effect of the light on you, its particles, influences, and fields of various intensity. There is nothing else!

Question: But why do we have exactly this kind of perception and not another?

Answer: Because it is the best one to move from to spiritual perception where you will perceive any impressions only to the extent of greater or lesser ability to bestow. And now you perceive it in a greater or lesser ability to enjoy.

Let’s say that I am looking at the painting of fish right now. Why do I sense them? Because they depict in me, on my desire to enjoy, all kinds of impressions: pleasant or unpleasant, desirable or undesirable, fear or joy. From these states, the picture is assembled for me.

I do not see yellow, purple, blue, water, fish, and so on. I see some impressions that are more pleasant or less pleasant for my ego, and only then do I decipher them.

Depict the Upper World for Yourself

202.0All our work is to transition from the perception of reality in egoistic sense organs to the perception of reality in altruistic sense organs.

This is the whole difference between the feeling of this world and the feeling of the upper world, between our current perception of reality in which we live in a lie, away from the Creator, and without any perception where we are, to understand, feel, and know where we exist, and within whom and with whom we reside.

This change of perception is made by the effort of a person. But beforehand there must be a desire to change our perception because it will happen only if we desire it. Therefore we must make an effort to imagine the upper reality, to create its image in ourselves as the Kabbalistic books speak about, and to build such relationships among us in the group.

Then during the study when we read about this upper reality, we will demand that a force from above come and open to us the organs of sensation, these floodgates of sensations, that we would reveal where we really are and not remain in this false, imaginary, far-fetched picture that appears to us today in our muddied organs of sensation. Thus, all of our work is to give correct definitions of what is called true reality.

Each of us, with all his might and as much as possible, should try to imagine, draw, paint, or form for himself a kind of supreme image in which we are all united in our desires together and with the Creator so there is no difference between us, but within us and between us reigns the Creator, the quality of bestowal and mutual love.

There is nothing but this state; there are no imaginary pictures, and we ask from this reality that it affect us and manifest in us. This should be the result of our efforts.

This is exactly what a person should constantly strive for during the reading of The Book of Zohar and other Kabbalistic books. And this is why these books speak about the true reality. Otherwise we could read books written in a different style, or there would be no point in reading them at all.

Therefore when we read about the upper reality in these books, we must try to achieve it. As Baal HaSulam writes in the Introduction to the Study of the Ten SefirotItem 155 “…through the yearning and the great desire to understand what they are learning, they awaken upon themselves the Lights that surround their souls—from the only existing state, and thus they correct themselves.

Perceiving the World in the Quality of Bestowal

49.01Question: If I acquire the quality of bestowal, how will my system of perception work then?

Answer: In bestowal you begin to perceive everything as a common field and nothing else! You will begin to see everything as one single whole that shimmers with all sorts of waves of influence on you in order to change you.

In fact, these waves do not exist either. Then you will come to the conclusion that this is how your sensitivity changes inside you in terms of the quality and quantity of your 613 desires, and therefore, you feel these waves, these shimmerings, these images in the field. Then you will begin to feel that in addition to the field of your perception, there is a constant field of bestowal, love, and emanation.

Question: How will I perceive various corporeal objects?

Answer: In no special way. Like all kinds of inanimate objects, that is, imprints of your desires, the ones that have no actions of their own, like everything else. You look at everyone and everything around you, and perceive them because you see your qualities turned outward.

Everything Passes

627.1Question: There is a Jewish parable about a man who one day visited a sage and began to complain: “Everything is bad for me: I lost my job, my wife is sick, my daughter still can’t get married, and my son doesn’t want to study. What should I do?” The sage said: “There is an old remedy. You need to take a lot of pieces of paper, write on them ‘All this will pass,’ and put the pieces of paper in every room. The visitor did not understand what it was said, and left. But since the sage said it, he did as he was told. After a couple of years, this visitor returned to the sage happy. “How grateful I am to you! I found a great job, my wife recovered, my daughter got married, my son finished his studies and is perfectly settled. Everything is fine! Thank you very much”! Then he added: “I just wanted to ask: those pieces of paper that I put in the house in the rooms, can they be removed already?” “Why remove them? ” said the sage, “let them lie down for now.” That is, this too will pass.

It was also written on King Solomon’s ring: “Everything passes.” What kind of wisdom is this? What kind of words are these that turn everything, all the grief goes away? What is it?

Answer: It is a different way of looking at the world. No more than that. Nothing changes. Only the view of a person changes.

Comment: Nevertheless, he said that everything was fine with him, and everything settled.

My Response: Yes, his attitude to life, to the world, and his outlook has changed, and therefore everything has settled down.

Question: What advice can be given to humanity and man, when he is not well here, today?

Answer: There is nothing that is wrong today. Today, everything is fine already.

Question: Is this what they call “everything passes”?

Answer: Yes. Absolutely everything is in a good state, and don’t invent bad states yourself.

Question: And if I feel bad at all?

Answer: There is no such thing as bad. It is what you are drawing for yourself.

Question: Don’t you believe that there are such terrible states when a person feels bad? Well, bad!

Answer: Actually, it is not a bad thing. There is nothing wrong.

Comment: It is not easy for a person to convince himself of this.

My Response: There is no need to be convinced. You just must accept it and that is it.

Question: What does it mean to put notes in all the rooms and that everything will pass?

Answer: It is to remind yourself because every minute you must come back to such a state that everything passes.

Whatever Should Be Will Be

294.3Comment: A Sufi was asked: “Venerable, why are there no traces of sadness on your face?” “I do not have anything worth grieving about the loss of,” the Sufi replied.

We are in sorrow all the time. We wanted something, but did not get it. A scratch on the car, we were fooled, or we were not given the position we wanted. We are constantly sad, all the time.

My Response: What a disaster!

Question: Yes! Humanity is like that. You see what is happening! It is in sorrow all the time. And this chain of sadness becomes our life. Can you, please, explain how not to be sad? How can we not be sad?

Answer: First, accept everything as coming from nature—from the Creator. And there should be no objections. And ask for one thing all the time—rapprochement, connection, and adhesion. Then everything will be fine.

Comment: But man is desire. And I always have desires. This one did not come to pass, that one did not come to pass, and still another one did not come to pass. How can I work with this? I am not filled with what I wanted to be filled with.

My Response: What would you like to be filled with?

Comment: What would I like? You name it!

My Response: If you imagine that in the next minute you are gone, then everything is fine.

Comment: Yes, then you are happy with the moment you are in now. That is all.

My Response: You are happy not because you are alive and have continued to live for one more minute but because you simply exist in this moment that the Creator has given you. And you live in it and try to adhere to Him.

Of course, one must strive to the best of one’s ability to ensure one’s future, and so it is written in the Torah, but nothing more.

Question: But if it is not secured, should I accept it?

Answer: Of course.

Question: That is, I want something, but whatever happens, happens and that is it?

Answer: Yes, definitely.

New Reality Built on Bestowal

229What changes should a person go through in order to disconnect from the corporeal perception of reality in parameters of time, movement, space, and move on to the feeling of spiritual reality?

We perceive reality in our desire to receive. What we feel inside this desire is called this corporeal world. If we rise above the definitions of time, movement, and space, we will reach a new perception—the spiritual world.

We are so trapped inside the corporeal axes of space and time that we cannot even imagine what could be outside of them. That is why there is the wisdom of Kabbalah that teaches us how to receive (Kabbalah = reception, a new perception, that is, a feeling of the spiritual world revealed in our new, spiritual sensory organs) and how to move from corporeal sensations to spiritual ones. This is the work of man.

Life in this world is designed to move from corporeal perception to spiritual perception. Kabbalists advise us on how to make such a change within us in order to move from the corporeal world based on reception to the spiritual world of bestowal.

To the extent that we manage to replace the egoistic sensory organs within us with altruistic ones, to this extent we will be able to experience the upper world, that is, the reality perceived in the new sensory organs built on bestowal and connection.

Connection Above All Differences

935Spiritual worlds are built upon connection of opposites: light and darkness, plus and minus, bestowal and reception, that is, all kinds of inverse qualities in all their forms.

If we can ignore these differences so that it is not the change of qualities that is important to us but the connection, which means that we raise the connection above the oppositeness of qualities, then we will reveal their common upper root inside them. In this way, we will reveal the Creator, the common upper force, and we will reveal the upper reality in this form.

The upper world differs from the lower world in that it is all altruistic, giving, uniting, and loving. The lower world, on the contrary, is rejecting and hating.

Therefore, it is said about the spiritual world that we must turn darkness into light and connect as one person with one heart so that there are no contradicting qualities between us that deny each other. On the contrary, we are always yearning to unite according to spiritual law and to complete each other.

If we do not succeed, then we understand that we were born with such qualities and must live with them, and we just need to strengthen the connection between us. We do not change our nature from reception to bestowal, but we change it to reception in order to bestow.

This is the entire patent. Nothing changes except the intention that we need to correct. And if we cover all crimes and our desire to receive and enjoy at the expense of someone else with the intention for the sake of bestowing to the other, then by this we correct our desire. Although it remains a desire to receive, it works with the intention for the sake of bestowal and connects us into one whole.

How to See a New World

929Those righteous ones, the authors of The Zohar, and especially Rabbi Shimon, their thoughts and words were in actual deeds, for according to the quality of the innovations in the Torah that they discovered, the upper degrees were promptly set up and arranged after them in actual fact. That is, the righteous build worlds with their innovations in the Torah (Zohar for All, Beresheet – 1, Article “The Sling-Stone,” Item 200).

Question: Are these worlds internal or external?

Answer: Everything is inside a person. There is nothing outside of us. Everything that seems to us as existing outside of us: the world, stars, people, and the Earth is the way we feel what is happening within us. There is nothing outside. All our perception of reality, as if I take something, hold it in my hands, and see it; all this appears only inside me.

Therefore, to the extent that I change and improve my qualities, I see a different world, a new world. But everything is inside a person. A person is a small world and he includes everything.

From the Level of Psychology to Kabbalah

214Question: You say that there is nothing stronger than a thought connected with a desire. What do thought and desire mean separately?

Answer: This happens only with respect to us. We are constantly talking to each other on a level called psychology.

It does not give us the opportunity to clearly explore our desires as forces with information records that can be divided into ten Sefirot (emanations). We do not study them in three lines: in receiving, bestowing, and in the middle line between them, in balance as on a scale. All this is impossible to study at the level of psychology.

But from it, we slowly rise to the level that Kabbalah speaks of, to the level where these forces are weighed and their vector orientation of interaction with each other is correctly evaluated. From these forces, we can create an entire vector field, check it, analyze it, change it, and thus control ourselves and the rest of the world.

This is what Kabbalah allows us, but only in the right direction and by no means forcing others to do so, since you are entering a realm where you have clear limitations. As soon as you cross a certain threshold and you suddenly have the opportunity to do something wrong, everything immediately disappears.

In the spiritual world, there is a safeguard; it is impossible to harm the world more than on our small, insignificant, earthly level.

Thought Connected with Desire

256Comment: You say that sometimes we underestimate the power of thought and the extent to which it is possible to turn everything around using thought.

My Response: Thoughts and desires are the most important and highest forces that instantly permeate the entire universe from end to end. Instantly! There is no greater, higher, or stronger power than the mind connected with desire.

All other forces are much smaller. If we were given the opportunity to use thought and desire purposefully, we would destroy, burn, and ruin everything around us immediately.

The fact is that our egoistic forces of the heart and mind (meaning desires and thoughts), manifest themselves within us in a very weak form at the level of our world. And as soon as we begin to possess the altruistic forces of connection (the right line), to this extent we begin to develop the left line—negative, egoistic connections.

By managing both forces,, we are constantly creating a system of balance. Then the middle force (the middle line) is revealed, called the supreme force of nature, the force of unity.
