Spiritual And Physical Exile

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom ancient Babylon to the destruction of the Temple, the group of Abraham went through many various states, ascents and descents. It is due to egoism that they were forced to unite with each other to the extent that they revealed the inner anti-egoistic laws of nature that they wrote in the book called the Torah. The Torah is the guide by which we must live today.

Through cultivating good relationships with each other, consideration, mutual trust, and support, they revealed a special force of connection within this unity, which is the force of nature. This force holds within itself the entire universe and causes its movement towards harmony.

This was the major discovery of the descendants of the group of Abraham. Having understood the fundamental force of nature that causes the development of humankind, they saw the process by which it develops.

Over time, coming out of slavery in Egypt, they again returned to their country called Israel, the land of those who seek the Creator, where they built a state based on love of others and laws of mutual trust.

These laws were introduced into everyday life through the Sanhedrin, which was a council of sages who had achieved a high level of altruism that clearly told them how to move forward and what to do. Thus, the sages dealt with the people’s problems and led it forward. The people existed in this state before the time called the destruction of the Temple.

For many hundreds of years and with each generation fighting with their ego and rising above it, they came to a state when an unexpected surge of egoism occurred within them and which they could not cover by getting closer to each other. Through this egoism, the society fell apart.

It was then that internecine wars, distrust, and disagreement began, leading to the invasions by the Greeks and then the Romans. Thus the path of the state of Israel ended. The entire group of people went from its spiritual state into exile, from a state of “love thy neighbor as thyself” to a descent to normal, everyday egoism.

In their physical life, the spiritual exile was manifested in the form of physical exile. The Romans who conquered the land of Israel expelled the Jews who were forced to begin their centuries of wandering.

Holding together purely egoistically in order not to perish and to somehow survive, they were compelled to move from country to country where they were given temporary shelter. Thus, the 2,000 years of exile of the Jewish people passed in this way.

The Rapid Growth Of The Ego In Society

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Psychologists claim that 20 to 30 percent of the people living in our society are categorized as mentally ill. They are not a special threat to society and are not harmful, and so they can live among us. What does this phenomenon mean?

Answer: We all know that people who need to concentrate in order to solve difficult problems or to perform dangerous missions undergo special training. They practice under special conditions and according to a special program. When they have carried out their mission, they are allowed to rest so that they can restore their powers and get back to normal life.

We, on the other hand, are in a constant race for survival all our life. A worrisome reaction sinks into our subconscious and penetrates different systems, is processed and kept in our memory. This relates to everything that comes from the environment and thus our natural systems cannot cope with such so many problems that continue to get deeper and wider in scope.

Comment: At the same time, we claim that the society is more developed and more cultured.

Answer: Our society has become worse and more egoistic. It is especially evident among children. In kindergarten children are already competitive. At the age of three or four they are as mentally developed as eight or nine-year-old children were in the past. If in the past a child needed the company of his peers at the age of six or seven, today kids play with each other at the age of two or three.

They already have social skills and habits and they begin to compete and to adopt the desires of others, not to mention what goes on in school. In the classrooms, there is the class queen and the class hero and those who are popular and those who are rejected. This didn’t exist 40 or 50 years ago when kids were much more naive.

Such phenomena are a result of the influence of television and the movie industry. It seems that kids today are used to it, but in fact they are under great internal emotional pressure and monstrous feelings, starting from kindergarten.

Question: What can we do about it?

Answer: Look at what psychologists do. They gather people in small groups so that the participants will mutually support one another. By this mutual effect, they establish a protective wall behind which they exist. People come like frightened animals and unite into a group by holding on to one another. Then they feel that they are safer

We establish a society that serves as a wall for everyone who is incorporated in it by holding lectures, workshops, and discussions at roundtables. In this society, we not only find protection, but also a positive influence.

Question: Our whole life seems to be an endless competition, a continuous chase, that we cannot escape. Can there be positive competitions and how can we fulfill this?

Answer: The ego pushes us to compete, but society is dependent on how we fulfill these competitions. We don’t need to destroy any natural inclination that we have. Compete with one another as to who helps others more, who loves, smiles, and makes others feel good. Everything depends on the ability of society to see certain values as higher than others. Competitive sports are also a good idea.

We have to think of how to fill these inclinations and not just let a person manage them by himself. The whole game industry can still be relevant, but in a healthy manner. The inclination to gamble and look for adventures is natural and stems from our animate level to hunt and bring home prey.

Therefore, we should allow people to compete with each other and to participate in games, but these should be beneficial games. This is the essence.

The Secondary Growth Of Terror, Part 3

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Today ISIS is attracting a great number of young people from different nations, including those who are not Muslims, but who have suddenly transformed their entire lives. What compels a young modern European to join such a strange organization having such absolutely different characteristics?

Could it be that its “power of attraction” is linked to the emptiness that encompasses the West? As far as it seems, ISIS is ready to provide a feeling of warmth, unity, brotherhood, family, purpose, and satisfaction.

By what means can we attract a young person to us? How could world unity in his eyes tip the balance towards our side instead of the ideas of these Eastern extremists?

Answer: It is necessary to recruit him to another army, an army in which he will fight for equality, a better life for all, and unity that includes a mutual basis for goodness. It is necessary to create special forces, which will be an organization that will overcome ISIS on an ideological front.

This is because we, in fact, are offering world revolution to a person, which is the transformation of the world into a garden of Eden where everyone is equal, happy, and provided with necessities and security for today and tomorrow. Everyone can be in a good mood and think of how to make things good and pleasant for others. There will be a line of balance among us where no one needs to be concerned about what will happen to himself at the present and in the future. Here, our health, children, and all aspects of our lives are okay.

Question: But for the young, sometimes something is required beyond the pastoral, a possibility of going wild, using force, pouring out their energy.

Answer: Well good, a person must fight, but instead of fighting enemies, he fights the ego itself that is not interested and doesn’t want any of this.

Basically I don’t want to unite and connect with others; I don’t feel a particular drive towards this. Yes, I am ready to receive the benefits that we outlined above, but to give something in return, no. So I must struggle with myself for this unity.

Question: Why does ISIS have such a power of attraction?

Answer: This is the power of security. Standing under a black flag, a person is sure that he has support and purpose. So he goes to conquer the world with his head raised proudly.

Question: How is it possible to create a similar positive pride about unity?

Answer: This is through an educational process that we must implement. It is possible to do this.

There is knowledge and there is education, and these two methods must be used here in parallel.

If terrorists are organizing tens of thousands for their own purposes, then we, with the help of various countries and international institutions, are able to reach billions, to hold `relevant conventions and get down to business everywhere in Europe, Africa, America, etc. After all, if we are open and our intentions are clear, we can mobilize enormous resources and support around the world for implementation.

In principle, we are saying to everyone: “There will be no more wars; there will be no more borders. This is one family, except for the terrorists, all of them. They are the only ones we have to rein in at this stage, until they disappear.”

Question: Is there some kind of significance to the fact that one force, one enemy, is threatening all of us, requiring us to unite against it? Will this be used to change global thinking?

Answer: I don’t think that the purpose of our unification must be a war with this force. Uniting against evil means learning some of its characteristics. Certainly the army must stand against the terrorists, but we don’t have any real possibility of stopping them once and for all through this.

So at the same time we, the citizens, must take care of ourselves and must unite with each other.

Confrontation Between Two Systems

laitman_628_1Question: I grew up in a village. We had nothing between the houses separating them from each other. Today, every new house is surrounded by a high fence. This image is very clear. How can we remove the border between us?

Answer: In the past we didn’t feel ourselves in a general integral system. When it began to be revealed, we began to pay attention to boundaries because we are loners and individualists.

And then we felt a difference between the integral system, which wants to connect us together, and the separate and solitary individuals who want to live “together” like in the cells of a beehive.

This means that each one feels himself separated in his personal cell protected by clear legal rules. In particular this was distinguished in the development of the West. In America there is nothing of greater value than protecting private property.

Now all this is breaking down. So we are beginning to feel how much, on the one hand, we depend upon each other and can cause each other pain and, on the other hand, we don’t want this dependence.

A collision is happening between the two approaches. From the side of nature, forces are pressuring us to connect together, from our side, an opposite process is occurring. Each of us wants to be alone, by himself. We hear from all sides, “What do you want from me? I am an obedient citizen, I don’t violate the rules, I am not guilty of anything.”

How do you know that you are not to blame? You are an egoist, you don’t participate in the general system together with everyone. How can it be that you are innocent? According to what rules have you checked that you are not guilty? Is it according to what you want? In relation to your ego, do you suppose that everything is completely okay?

So the pain that is revealed now is derived from a confrontation between two systems. Certainly we are suffering more and more. There is no choice, we must move ourselves towards accommodation with the demands of nature. For nature will surely win.

Question: And then there won’t be any pain?

Answer: Pain appears at the border where I press on you, you press on me, and nature presses on both of us. Open up and you won’t feel pain. Sometimes we fight, get angry at each other, and from the two words, someone on the side reconciles us, and we are relieved; then everything is okay between us, we can cooperate.

A “click” happens, and in one moment everything is solved, the border disappears. When this happens, there is no place for physiological, mental, or spiritual pain. Ultimately the entire problem is in this.

Question: It is said, “The suffering of many, is half the consolation.”

Answer: That is really how it feels. Pain in itself cannot be measured; you will not see its “amount” on some instrument. So when my pain is transmitted to you and other people, and I see that everyone is suffering, then psychologically the pain level is lessened, actually by half.

The Correct Livelihood

laitman_626Question: What is the “correct livelihood” according to the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: The proper livelihood (business) is the manufacture and production of the means of production and consumption in an amount required to provide every member of society with a rational normal standard of living and no more than this.

For example, every animal needs only food that is useful and appropriate for its physiological functioning. A cow never drinks champagne, and a horse will never eat hamburgers. It needs oats and a cow needs grass.

Likewise, normal healthy food is required for a person not exceeding a required level of necessity. With this he will fill his body and all the rest of his needs will be fulfilled only by rising to the next spiritual levels.

Question: What would be a normal profit in business?

Answer: A business must be constructed only to give a person normal fulfillment for his living, not profit.

Together with this, between us we will do great work by mutually satisfying the greatest necessities. But work like this is already included in our spiritual ascent and will be evaluated as spiritual work.

Or all of humanity will gradually begin to be included within it by devoting one or two hours per day, or particular groups of people will work in shifts, several million today, several million tomorrow, and so on.

This means that working for the sake of business will itself quickly retreat into the past. Business circles now think only about how to change some bank notes to others to return the world to the real value of money. But in any case, its value is gone and it is impossible to change anything here.

The integral world must be like one family, and in a family everything is divided according to what each one needs.

Business Is A Product Of Egoism

laitman_547_06Question: How does Kabbalah relate to business?

Answer: Business is a product of egoism. If people had properly engaged in the development of their earthly infrastructure, they would have created a civilization in which all exists on an equal footing, they would have served each other, together they would take care of their children, grandchildren, and themselves.

All this would require a minimum amount of effort and time.  People wouldn’t waste too much effort on themselves but would cherish the land, nature, and the environment.

Egoism makes a person reach farther, grab more and more at the expense of others, and on this basis business came into existence. Business is the use of others to benefit oneself, in addition everything is legal and punishment can be avoided. In principle, such a subordination of a person to another person is the same as slavery, only more subtle, civilized, and tame.

Kabbalah states that this is a temporary phenomenon due to nature’s implementation of its own program.  As soon as we reach the level of self-awareness as integrally existing people who depend on each other, then all our political, economic, financial, trade, other interactions and communication will begin to crumble. We won’t be able to control and manage them.

The world will come to such a state where the means of production and finance won’t play any role because, on one hand, they will be suppressed by the human factor and, on the other hand, there will be a new technology that will make everything so accessible and cheap, it will lead to a depreciation of any other means.

Businesses today rely on triggering wars, on exploiting people, on keeping people sick for the prosperity of the pharmaceutical industry, etc.  However, everything comes to an end, as it all gradually withers away.

As a result, a person experiencing frustration and depression will reach a desire to destroy the world. It already has started with the Islamic fundamentalism.

Therefore, in any case, everything will be reborn either in an evil way (and we are already witnessing this), or, in a good way, depending on how much we succeed in explaining to humanity that there is another, a good way.

Patent For A Happy Life

laitman_277Happiness is the fulfillment of a person’s strongest desires. In general, it appears in contrast to a feeling of dissatisfaction.

For example, hunger gives a sensation of pleasure from food, separation gives a sensation of joy from meeting a close and dear friend, etc. In other words, we are built so that we can feel something positive only from something negative.

Then the question arises: Is it worthwhile for us to aspire and yearn for happiness at all if first we must sink into suffering in order to feel happy later?

The fact is that the Kabbalistic method makes it possible for a person to experience happiness at the same time as feeling lack of fulfillment. In other words, at that very moment I taste something, I also feel a longing for that taste and its fulfillment.

I don’t need to divide this into time: now, I suffer, and later I receive. This is because for people who are involved with spiritual work, there is no question of time. They exist outside of time and move simultaneously through states of suffering and fulfillment, hunger and satiation.

This is the wisdom of Kabbalah, a wisdom about how to receive! It teaches a person to get what you want not in another month or year, but specifically at the moment you want it. Together with this, as a pair, two potentially opposite values are always operating simultaneously, plus and minus.

In our world, this doesn’t exist. Here, there is one big minus for which, in fact, we don’t get a plus. While according to the Kabbalistic method, the reception of pleasure itself invites in us a desire for it and its fulfillment.

Question: However, how does one do this? How is there happiness in this world in spite of it all?

Answer: This is possible only when I am not fulfilled independently, but through others. All happiness is latent in this because I never can fulfill myself by myself. However, if I feel and absorb the desires and deficiencies of others, by fulfilling them, I fulfill myself, for their desires become mine. It follows that I fulfill myself by existing in others.

The secret lies in the fact that I go outside of myself, discover desires and deficiencies outside of myself, accept them as mine and fulfill them. In other words, both desire and fulfillment are found outside of me, but this is my soul.

Question: Do we even fulfill a person’s physical desires like this?

Answer: We supply all of his desires, but only to a certain extent. The physical desires of a person are fulfilled only to the degree that his existence is provided for, and no more, whereas spiritual desires are fulfilled to the degree that we want to rise together because my elevation and his are mutually connected and complete each other.

In this manner, fulfillment of the desires of others gives us a feeling of happiness.

Healing Through Pain

Laitman_198Question: Pain is one of the common indicators we are confronted with when talking about health or its absence. We strive to be released from pain in all possible ways and methods. However, certainly, doesn’t the mechanism of pain have a function?

Answer: First of all, when we are talking about some phenomenon, we must understand its origin. The source of the nervous system, like all systems, all of matter, life, and creatures, is the desire to receive. Primitive organisms have no nervous systems, but only a kind of transfer of acids and electric fluctuations characteristic of atoms and molecules.

To the degree of the growth of the desire, a body develops unique systems within it that are concerned about its well-being, health, and feeling good. On a particular level, together with the other systems in the body, the nervous system develops.

Systems of good and evil support each other and pain protects us. Without pain, I would not feel my hand nearing fire or that some disturbances are happening in the body. So, remedies for relieving pain are, in fact, contrary to nature.

Pain develops on several levels. Sometimes, it is difficult to separate physical, corporeal, and mental pain, pain from the past, the present, or future, my pain and the pain of someone I love or hate. Here, we suddenly begin to exit our bodies and participate in the feeling of pain or its opposite, happiness, in external systems according to the degree of connection with them, regardless of their being good or bad.

Why must lovers fight sometimes? Why is it impossible to live like two angels on a rosy cloud? This is because, in this way, they can feel the limitations between them and their degree of penetration into each other. Pain contains a lot of information, like an electrical discharge through which it is possible to convey great amounts of data.

It is clear that we are linked with each other through our physiological systems, but, among them, there is a particular pronounced complexity to the pain system. It reaches very high levels, moving from physical pain to mental and spiritual pain. Sometimes, depression can be helpful. It never has been as exaggeratedly emphasized as it is today.

Depressive states stop a person and relax him. They are aroused for him to get along correctly where he is, not to get any closer to other people because of the risk of epidemics. Depression now rises from a corporeal level to a mental level and even the spiritual system.

This becomes a big problem for modern medicine that, as far as it seems, doesn’t feel sufficient profitability in this direction, so it doesn’t get involved with it.

In fact, through happiness and good influences on a person, we definitely can heal most illnesses. Without a doubt, this is relevant to modern diseases like cancer, heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes.

Question: Is there a difference between pain and suffering?

Answer: Suffering is relevant to systems connected to understanding the source of pain. It is associated with a feeling of guilt, dependence or interdependence on someone. Suffering is more relevant to a state of mind than it is to a physiological feeling.

A Healthy Body Reflects A Balanced Soul

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is Kabbalah’s view on health?

Answer: All types of health disciplines such as physiology, ethics, morals, and psychology are the essence of the balanced system called the human being. All these disciplines are interconnected.

Based on our life experiences we know how psychology influences physiology and visa versa. If we take care of our “I,” the highest level of the human in us, we influence the lowest levels of the subsystems.

Therefore, Kabbalah tells us that first and foremost the soul has to be corrected. This is the balance of self needed in order to balance oneself out with the rest of the world and be in harmony and homeostasis with it. Then the lowest physiological systems will come to balance due to the upper system’s influence and gradually arrive to be in order.

This is the cure, according to Kabbalah. The same point of view exists in Eastern healing practices. They state that the human being is a micro world, and as such must be in complete internal balance on all levels as well as in external balance with the world.

To reach such equilibrium, we must have correct education and societies, which are the shell in which we exist and with which we have to interact while being fully integrated. This will naturally balance us out internality.

This is why treatment of a person should not come from the elimination of all kinds of symptoms, but only from the upper levels that, according to the hierarchy, will bring the entire system into balance from the top down.

We don’t need to delve into the bodily physiological properties; we have to bring the soul into balance. The body will then comply and regain health all on its own.

Treatment of separate body organs doesn’t bring any results since we have no idea how they are even related. It’s like fixing one thing, but breaking another. Any medication itself is a poison, and it is not for nothing that the symbol of medicine is a poisonous snake.

We see that taking medication doesn’t lead to a complete cure and a person continues to be sick. A person’s soul must be balanced in order for a person to be healthy. As saying goes, a sound mind is in a sound body.

Comment: Just like in ancient Chinese medicine, a doctor will receive his payment for a person being completely healthy and not just for treating separate organs.

Answer: Yes, but this will be a completely different doctor. It won’t be a doctor-Kabbalist, but it will be an instructor who will correctly tune a person into homeostasis with the environment.

Life With Unending Pleasure

laitman_276_01Question: Let’s try to translate concepts about money that are rooted in society to a new level of thinking. For example: “Money runs the world.”

Answer: I would say that it is not money but want, desire, and need that run the world. Money only covers the desire and even eliminates it by fulfilling it. After I fulfill my desire with the help of money, I don’t feel good. Once again I must want something, yearn for it again.

What is the pleasure that is most attractive to me? It is in connection and unity with society. The pleasure there is not only attractive but also endless; it only continues to grow. This is what is special about fulfillment from the environment in comparison to all other fulfillments.

Question: Another old concept: “Money buys everything.”

Answer: That’s right. In our world money buys everything except health, loyalty, dedication, and dominance over the angel of death. To transfer this concept to the new thinking, it will be necessary to rise to another level of explanation. If instead of with money, I cover the needs and deficiencies in my relationship, then this is true loyalty and devotion.

Thanks to new attitudes, love is developed, the same needs and fulfillments that were hidden by money and never fulfilled. For these needs are relevant to loyalty, love, and freedom from the angel of death.

Comment: “Money gives us freedom, making it possible to be independent.”

Answer: We don’t acquire independence by being able to fulfill all of our constantly changing deficiencies. I am free only when I am found above the deficiencies and not within them. This is called the right-coated screen.

If I own a bank and everything that I want I cover with money, I am not free because I am always engaged in this activity: covering my needs with money. But if I am found above my deficiencies so that I don’t feel them, I also have no need for money.

Question: I don’t need anything?

Answer: If I am above the desire to receive, let’s say in a society in which everyone is connected together and supplies each other with everything necessary, then I don’t live in my deficiencies but in the deficiencies of the society. In this case, I don’t feel that I lack the money to fulfill myself. I fulfill others, and the others fulfill me.

If we live like this, then I don’t feel want because I am found above it. I care about everyone and everyone cares about me; in this way I feel that I am free. And everyone feels themselves free because they are concerned about everyone. So we don’t live under the pressure of want, and we are truly free.
