Two Worldviews: Eastern and Western

408Question: If I perceive the world not within myself, but outside of me, should I try to physically influence it because there are a vast number of actions available?

Answer: No. I should only help the world, that is, correct my reflection outside of me. In doing so, I am correcting myself.

The thing is, when it exists outside of me, it becomes more apparent to me what needs to be corrected. But ultimately, I should only correct myself. That is the difference between Eastern and Western philosophies.

There are two worldviews: I correct the world, subordinate it to me, or I correct myself, and in doing so, the world around me is corrected in my perception. These two orientations are completely opposite.

Eastern philosophy (Chinese, Indian, etc.) is closer to the truth and aligns us with the idea that we need to change ourselves. That is why in ancient Chinese medicine doctors were paid for keeping their patients healthy, not when they were sick. And if a person committed a crime, he had to be executed or hanged in front of everyone.

The West is horrified by this. And the East says, “Why? We are thus correcting the world so that others will not do that. And you encourage the opposite.” There is deep discord between the two approaches. And it applies not only to medicine or an attitude to a person, but to the worldview in general, to everything.

Therefore, look at how America, Europe, and Russia behave: “We need to assert ourselves in such a way that others are warned off. We will prove it! We will win!” and so on. This perspective stems from an incorrect worldview. And as a result, all these countries eventually lose.

This incorrect approach is deeply ingrained in people. And until they change their worldview, until they understand that they need to change themselves and not the world, they will suffer tremendously.

The Secret of Hearing and Sight

567.01Question: Why is music so much more sufficient than a visual picture? For example, if I do not see a person, but I hear what he is saying, I can understand him. Yet, if I do not hear, but I see that he is waving his arms, then I can only understand certain symbolism.

Answer: Hearing is the level of Bina, and sight is the level of Hochma. That is, sight and hearing cannot be connected with other sensations. These are already the channels through which, as it were, spiritual information is transmitted.

Through smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, you cannot convey internal, semantic information. This requires special codes. But through words, music, and especially through pictures, this can already be done.

It is like laser frequencies or high frequencies in radio engineering, through which you can transmit a huge amount of video and audio information. At low frequencies, however, only small packets of sound or some other information can be transmitted.

So here, from organ to organ, the possibility of transmitting semantic information increases.

Question: Is sound in any case more meaningful than sight?

Answer: No, 90% of information is perceived through sight, not by hearing, because sight is closer to direct perception than hearing.

We must hear the words, translate them inside ourselves into the language of pictures, because we perceive only them. We feel these pictures, which have moved from their sound format to semantic ones within us, and something happens to them.

The visual range, however, is immediately perceived by our desires in a sensory form. This is the difference between hearing and seeing, as between Bina and Hochma.

If someone speaks, I must listen, understand the words, build their semantic series in myself, translate this series into feelings, and so on. But if I see a picture, it immediately evokes feelings in me. There is no buffer in the form of a link of words.

You might ask, “How is this perceived with regard to the amount of information?” You can talk a lot about this topic, but, in principle, this already applies to psychology, and not to Kabbalah.

Double Correction

207Comment: You say that the world exists not outside of us, but within us. In any case, outside you see the same thing that, let’s say, is shown on the news.

My Response: Yes, that is correct because we are still in this world with our animalistic senses. In addition I have another sensation above the animalistic one in which I perceive the world differently.

Both perceptions of the world exist within me in parallel: one is based on my egoistic desire, which remains for the time being because I still have uncorrected qualities, and through them, I sense the same as you supposedly sense.

And “allegedly you” because you do not exist, you are in me. And so it will be until I will correct myself to the extent that I begin to perceive everything within me. But before that, I have to correct myself in a twofold way.

In two ways means that I have to correct myself in relation to you and try to provide you with a method of correction so that you correct yourself in relation to me. This duality is specially designed to help us bring both perceptions of the world into one.

A Journey inside Yourself

79.01Question: Previously, people traveled from place to place and the journey took a week, a month, and so on. Now they can be in another place in two hours. If everything in me consists of desires, then what is this desire inside of me called a journey?

Answer: The fact is that our desires have become bigger, more egoistic, and more dynamic. Therefore, I have such desires in me when I imagine airplanes, ships, and all kinds of means of transportation including rockets. In general, this is all an expression of my new egoistic desires.

I create these models and mechanisms within myself. All this is in my desires, there is nothing else. I see the whole world inside my desire, including all artificial or natural things.

What does natural mean? Natural is something that was created without my participation.

There is physical, biological, and social nature. Physical nature, obviously, goes on by itself. Biological nature, i.e., vegetative, animate, and human nature does too.

Social nature, however, is what we do in human society, what we create ourselves and add to nature in order to exist more comfortably. We invent all kinds of toys, devices, that help us live comfortably, to see further, hear further, work less, be more lazy, fulfill ourselves with all sorts of videos, sounds, and so on.

Our ego invents all these devices for its enjoyment. But it is possible to be fulfilled without any hardware, devices, and nano-technologies. If I cannot provide myself with pure fulfillment, the light, then my ego creates egoistic pleasures, and they require huge efforts from me.

Kabbalah offers pure fulfillment. Why should we invent some huge devices in order to be fulfilled? It is possible to be filled with joy without any physical means.

Question: How exactly does the replacement of corporeal fulfillments with spiritual ones happen?

Answer: It depends on how I work. If I work in the direction “for my own sake,” then of course I have to invent all sorts of mechanisms and search for how I can fulfill myself with something else at least a little, and so on until I reach a state where I cannot be fulfilled by anything.

But if I am being fulfilled “for the sake of bestowal,” then I have a completely different kind of fulfillment and everything depends only on me.

A Twofold View of the World

928Question: What makes you strong? How do you transform obstacles by yourself?

Answer: I see two sides of the world.

One side is our world in the form you see it with the naked eye. This world is against me. After all, if I am the bearer of a Kabbalistic idea, almost everyone in this world except Kabbalists (who are few and hidden) is against me because of their egoistic nature.

And even my students, to the extent they have not yet corrected themselves, have not crossed the Machsom, and have not found a minimal spiritual form of integration, bestowal, connection, are all my opponents too. Internally, each of them can become my opponent at any moment because such is the nature of their ego, there is nothing you can do about it. I was like that too, I went through all the stages of spiritual maturation, and therefore, I understand them perfectly. This is first of all.

Second, everything is controlled by the upper force. Practically, I work not against these people, but against the upper force, as if against the egoism it creates, in order to somehow bring all its particles, that is, all these people who are egoistic particles, to their integral connection.

On one hand, I have a somewhat antagonistic attitude toward the world, and on the other hand, I see it as a means of advancement.

Naturally, there are many problems ahead in the form of detractors, haters, destroyers, and in the form of misunderstanding, laziness, as well as in the form of helpers on the way.

Communication at the Level of Thought

182.02Question: The most powerful thing that a person has is visual perception. But sensual desire, as you say, is many times richer and stronger than visual desire. Is there something similar between spiritual desire and material desire? How can it be described?

Answer: How can we depict desires? Only in the form of a vector, in the form of a direction: from something to something else, and what is the nature of this vector, what is its magnitude, its strength.

Desire is a physical force. And there are many such forces. They are all tied together and represent an immense, complex, infinitely intertwined network.

They are so interconnected at every millimeter of their vector by countless interweaving that they represent one single whole. But within this whole, each force exists on its own. Only their connection, combination, and inclusion in one another create one single piece. This is the entire creation.

Once we have a similarity of desires, we will no longer need any description. We will directly feel each other. If you and I have the same desires, then you and I have the same thoughts.

If we have different desires, then we have different thoughts, but they are in contact with each other. Why do we need to clothe it in words then? Why should we descend to the animalistic level when there is direct, vivid communication?

How Do Words Affect Matter?

627.2Question: I heard about an experiment that was conducted where people wrote various words on bottles containing water. They froze the bottles of water and examined the structure of the ice crystals that developed under a microscope. These formations were very different from each other.

Some were beautiful, and some, on which such words as, for example, “war” or “death” were written, were not. How do words affect matter?

Answer: It does not matter how, but all words and thoughts affect matter. We live in one common world where inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature, and a person’s thoughts and feelings are all combined into one single system in which everything is interconnected. I hope people will gradually understand that we have to think about what we are saying.

Question: Is there a connection between oncological diseases and a person’s thoughts?

Answer: They say that the negative thoughts and words of a person have a bad effect on him and other people.

What Is the Power of Thought?

229Question: What is the power of thought and how can we use it? From the Kabbalist’s perspective, what should one think about every moment?

Answer: The power of thought is very great because with it we can bring big corrections into the universe, into its forces and their interaction with each other. This happens only if we direct the entire power of our heart to the good connection between people. Then it multiplies many times. In this way, we begin to correctly awaken all forces of nature.

Question: What is so special about the power of the heart?

Answer: The power of love, the power of kindness, the power of good connection.

Question: Can a person awaken it or generate it within himself in any way?

Answer: Yes. He can awaken this power within himself; connect it with the powers of other people, and in this way advance toward the improvement of the world.

There Is Nothing Outside of a Person

424.01Question: I have to give the world a method of correction, meaning, spread the knowledge that there is an alternative perception of reality. What will it give them? How does the process of their external correction occur?

Answer: By correcting others, I correct myself because they are parts of me. I simply perceive them as uncorrected because I am still like that, and so I have to make efforts to correct them outside of myself.

But the world is in me, the Creator is in me, and everything is in me. There is nothing outside of me. How can you say that something exists outside of you if you do not perceive it in your senses and do not imagine it inside yourself.

You see some kind of holographic picture in which your brain depicts to you as if something exists outside of yourself. Your brain is like a projector that projects everything outside to you, constructs various images within you: here is the sun, the stars, the clouds, this room, this is what I see through the window.

Question: Then why do elements like a lowlife exist? I do not like this quality.

Answer: This lowlife is in you! Therefore, correct yourself, and there will be no lowlife. It is intentionally given to you so vividly outside of you. When you see it from the outside, you have to realize that it is inside. This way you will treat it with even stronger hatred. Baal HaSulam writes this in the Introduction to The Book of Zohar.

However, it is useless to talk about it. It comes gradually.

Comment: But nonetheless, it is very interesting.

My Response: There is nothing interesting in this. Kabbalah is not concerned with satisfying curiosity, but with clearly instructing a person who wants to be corrected, and only in the state he is in, so he can do it practically.

We Will See Right Through Each Other

423.02Comment: If you ask any person to name some recent movie, a blockbuster that offers people a good option for the future, one that is not frightening, but kind, any person will have to think. I think there has not been any movie like that for 30 – 35 years. The entire film industry and all human thinking cannot seem to create films with some kind of good future.

Answer: No, everything is aimed at scaring.

Comment: We are constantly being shown some kind of apocalypse and all sorts of dystopias. But this is people’s request. After all, Hollywood clearly feels the demands of the people. If money were paid for a good ending, the endings would have been good.

My Response: I think that today it is really difficult for a person to imagine a good end to the world or even some kind of cloudless, shining future. This is something impossible. Therefore, the best thing that is closer to us, is to create something terrible.

Question: Does a person really not want to watch some kind of fairy tale about a good ending so that he is assured that it can happen? Is it right or not to create such a thing and introduce this into the subconscious?

Answer: But you say that there are people in Hollywood who understand human needs. That is probably why they do it.

Question: This is a paradox for me. A paradox! Doesn’t a person want to go to the cinema?

Answer: People will not go for these sweet things. They do not see it around them, and they will not believe it in the movies either.

You can show movies about love or something else, but not about a good, warm, and kind future.

Question: When there was a great depression in America, in the 20 to 30s, the first musical film The Jazz Singer was released. And the father of a family took the last dollar and gave it to sit with the family and watch this movie. That is, out there is horror and darkness, people jumping out of windows, and here I have this movie playing, and I am sitting and watching.

Do you think it will not be profitable to create such a kind, warm future?

Answer: No one will do it today. Firstly, people no longer believe. Once upon a time they were more naive and believed such things could exist. They sat, cried, and dreamt. And now, after we have gone through such a bumpy path and were all thoroughly shaken up by endless wars that take place every minute in different parts of the world, I think that no movie will calm us down.

Question: Then tell me, what are you personally for? Who are you for?

Answer: I am not for Hollywood because releasing some kind of naive, sweet beauty with a good future is disgusting, cloying, and deceitful. And to release movies about serious suffering, of course it is possible, but how many films like that are possible?

Films, in principle, with a more or less good ending, are still filled with all kinds of suffering. They are successful because they drag the audience into suffering, and then they still show some of his good features. Goodness wins.

Question: What kind of movie would you create? Would you not create a movie with some kind of ending that a person would believe in? You say that we should come to good connections.

Answer: But I am not an artist. I cannot imagine how you can draw such a picture for, say, one and a half to two hours that would still leave a warm impression.

Question: It is possible such movies are created that you can leave the cinema with a warm feeling? How can you make a person believe in a good, kind ending, as you say all the time, in connection, which one way or another will happen, and in love, to which one way or another we will come?

Answer: No. I do not think a person can believe it. The only thing he can do is agree with a movie like, say, Forrest Gump. It is a big movie.

Comment: That is a great movie. In my opinion, it is a wonderful movie.

My Response: But this is about a person who is not quite normal.

Comment: Yes, he is abnormal for everyone, but he turned out to be the most normal of all, loving and able to love.

My Response: But it is still unrealistic. And if such a reality is possible, then only in such an instance. I cannot imagine how you can do something like that to attract people. Even if you attract them, they will leave the cinema and forget.

Comment: Because reality is different.

My Response: How can you make a person different with the help of cinema? I do not think there will be such masters.

Question: Still, what kind of movie would you make? One that would really work. What should it lead to?

Answer: I have not seen such a movie that would change people and lead them to some serious internal changes.

Question: But would you like them to exist?

Answer: Of course! Who would not want that?! Almost everyone wants a good future. But I do not know.

Question: Are you saying that if a movie would change a person, then you are for such a movie?

Answer: Yes.

Question: If the first condition is that the movie changes the person, the second question is: from whom to whom or from what to what?

Answer: From who he is now. Now he is just a beast that thinks only about himself and cannot think about others. Or if he can think about others, then only in what form what he does to them will bring gain to him.

If a person is actually given absolute freedom, then he will be absolutely indifferent to what is around him except to the extent of the space around him that he can look at and see that it is pleasant to his eye.

Comment: This is a man of today.

My Response: This is a man.

Question: We are talking about correction. What should this beast come to?

Answer: He should begin to understand that the most important thing is when you rejoice in others. And for this it is necessary to change the nature of man.

Question: “Rejoice in others,” what do you mean by this?

Answer: It is when it is good for others, it is good for you. But how can this be! On the contrary, you rejoice that you are better than others, that is, when they are worse than you.

Question: So, one way or another, do you always lower others so that they are lower than you?

Answer: Naturally, but you should raise them.

Question: Is this the main change? If there were such a movie and it will attune a person like this, are you in favor of such a movie?

Answer: I am for such a movie, but it would not be successful.

Question: Financially?

Answer: Not in any way. No one will admire it.

Comment: You do not want to imagine, you are returning to reality.

My Response: I cannot dream for a long time, I am not young anymore, to put it mildly.

Question: How will we come to such a movie then? We are in some movie right now. It is clear that this cinema is our world. This movie is mostly a horror movie. How will we come to another movie after all? You say that it is embedded in us to come to it and we will one way or another.

Answer: I do not know. Perhaps this is possible through the younger generation whose love will make us, the elderly, become different. One way can be for the sake of our children and grandchildren.
It can also be a general revelation of evil where we all realize how ugly we are egoistically.

Comment: But this can only be after great suffering.

My Response: I do not know. Suddenly such a revelation will come even without suffering. And we will be ashamed to look at each other.

Question: Does it somehow depend on us?

Answer: Not particularly. Imagine that wherever you are, on the subway, on the bus, somewhere on the road, among people, that everyone is looking at you and everyone understands who you are. And you look at others and also understand who they are. And you cannot run away from it.

Question: Do I have to go further on the bus with them?

Answer: Yes. In general, this is a good setup. And after that you have to work on yourself.

Question: So this movie is not bad when I see who they are; do they see who I am?

Answer: Yes. One day all people will begin to see each other correctly, transparently, through and through.

Question: I see. I am like naked to them, and they are like naked to me. I can see everything. And how will I see myself in such a situation?

Answer: The same. That is how you see yourself. You look where to hide, and there is nowhere to go.

Question: We will make such a movie, we will approach it. And if this happens, like in a glass house, in this bus in which everyone sees everything, there is nowhere to hide, and what should we do in such a situation?

Answer: There is no need to hide anywhere. It should be the opposite. Here it is necessary to work on everyone’s realization that we are all like that and that we must immediately begin to change ourselves every minute on the spot! And without being shy. Literally every minute, what is revealed in us is so that we correct it.

Question: So you are saying that the horror of this realization will unite us?

Answer: Yes. It will unite us and help us become different.
