Question: What is the correct way to read Kabbalistic books if you are not yet familiar with Kabbalistic terminology?

Answer: The approach is the same as in regular studies—the gradual acquisition of skills.

I remember the first time I came to Kabbalah classes. I was told: “Sit down, open the book, read.” I opened it. It was An Introduction to the Science of Kabbalah, one of the prefaces to The Book of Zohar. We began to read. And that is all. No introduction, no preparation.

It is different today. There are introductory conversations and preliminary events. And before, everything was very simple: if you want, sit down and read.

Question: Perhaps that is why there are lighter books that you can use before you start the serious literature?

Answer: Yes, there are a lot of such books today. But I personally believe that it is necessary to teach the way I was taught.

Question: All the primary sources that we study are written in Hebrew. They are translated into Russian, English, Spanish, and other languages. Is there any difference in the influence when you read the original source in Hebrew or in translation?

Answer: The language of Kabbalah is very specific. The point is that here it is necessary to describe the world that we do not feel, to introduce a person to the sensations of this world, to arouse in him certain reactions, tastes, rumors, and so on. It is necessary to adjust it so that it begins to feel those vibrations that an ordinary person does not feel.

Therefore, there is a certain complexity here, which is not easily overcome. A person’s preparation for sensing the upper world has been going on for many years. Not all people are able to try to comprehend the higher world, since this comprehension is emotional and at the same time analyzed by the conceptual apparatus.

So, this is a very complex system of knowledge that requires serious books and, most importantly, primary sources.

The entire reality is filled with our great egoism. The entire world, inanimate nature, plants, animals, and people, all these are degrees of our egoistic desire in which we must begin to make room for the force of bestowal, the force of the Creator.

We work inside ourselves, inside our perception of the world, our connection, and create a place where the Creator can place the embryo of His quality of bestowal and begin to grow within us.

The Creator influences us both from within and without. We are inside the white light, which has purposely restricted itself so that we can exist in it. Thus, we find ourselves inside an empty space freed from the presence of the Creator, and we do not feel Him.

A ray of light entered into this empty space and started building spiritual objects and worlds inside this emptiness. Therefore, we are inside the Creator, under His full control. But this is how it looks from the side of the Creator.

From the side of the created beings, we exist in an empty space, supposedly free from the control of the Creator because we do not see this control and do not feel it. Therefore, we think that we are the masters of this world and our lives.

But in fact, the Creator educates us and brings us to the realization that we do not know where we really are. Then we begin to search for what our life depends on and discover that there is the upper force that determines and realizes everything, and we yearn to reveal it.

This is how it happened to all the Kabbalists of the past generations until they disclosed the method that allows us to connect with the Creator and passed on to us the method of revealing the Creator to the created beings in this world, which is called the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Question: In the classroom, your students study books of different forms. Some of them are more scientific, for example, The Study of the Ten Sefirot. Others, like The Book of Zohar, are written in more allegorical language. How do they affect a person?

Answer: Differently. It depends on the person. But if he has been studying Kabbalah for a long time, then he starts to see both in a sensory presentation, for example, through The Book of Zohar and in scientific-technical presentation through the The Study of the Ten Sefirot that they are one and the same.

In principle, they simply describe the world. But since a person consists of the heart and the mind, that is, of sensations and analysis, these books are either closer to his sensory state or to the conceptual one. People are divided into these two categories, i.e., they are somewhere in between.

But when a person is engaged in Kabbalah, for him it already merges. Of course, there are states of so-called ascents or descents. Then either physical descriptions or sensory descriptions are more suitable for him.

Question: Which Kabbalistic book was the first to fall into your hands and reveal the yearning for spirituality in you?

Answer: The Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah, this is a very complex book.

I read many different books and articles. I tried to immediately delve into serious things, but was confused, and did not know how and what until I found my teacher. This happened after three to four years of independent study during which I went through various so-called Kabbalah experts.

However, when I found the teacher, I stayed with him for the rest of his life. I was his assistant, his personal disciple. And after him, I continued his activities.

Question: What is the first book you would recommend in order to start studying Kabbalah?

Answer: Kabbalah is a science. Therefore, it may be able to attract, but only to some extent. After all, a person must have some desire to discover the meaning of life.

If someone has it, he will understand that Kabbalah answers the question of how to reveal this meaning, how to change himself, to change his life, and what internal tools he has for this. They are within the person. In general, this is the science of cognition and understanding the surrounding space.

Then a person will begin to see this space in a more expanded form, actively, in interaction with everything around him. By changing his attitude to the environment, that is, by changing himself, he changes the reaction of the environment to him.

Question: There are textbooks in Kabbalah where the material is presented with diagrams and calculations that appeal to the mind, and on the other hand there are books that appeal to our feelings, for example: Attaining the Worlds Beyond. Is it better to appeal to logic or feelings? Or perhaps to study these books simultaneously?

Answer: The fact is that a person consists of thoughts and desires, heart and mind. There are people who have more developed feelings, and there are those who have more developed conceptual thinking, “physicists” and “lyricists.” Therefore, Kabbalistic books are written either with emotional or logical approaches.

Later, these two paths come together to aid us in the revelation of the world. And it turns out that the most important thing is the feeling perception, because we are still built from desires although they are controlled and directed through the mind. The right combination between the mind and the heart gives us an idea of what man is.

I came to the science of Kabbalah through logic. My first major was biomedical cybernetics. I graduated from Leningrad University. The discipline itself determined my attitude toward the world.

So I was looking for an answer as to how the world works. What is this system that moves, controls us, has its own unshakable laws that are above us? How should I interact with it and it with me, because through these laws we can find out who or what we are, where we are headed, and what is happening to us? Can we influence it? And so on.

These questions led me to Kabbalah because I could not find a serious, direct answer to it anywhere, while Kabbalah answered them in an absolutely clear, realistic, and I would say, dry way. It appealed to me. In other words, I was interested in clarity and truthfulness, not psychological, but technical.

I wrote the book Attaining the Worlds Beyond in 2 to 3 weeks. It just spilled out of me in one general emotion, which is why people perceive it that way.

In addition, we have serious books with diagrams. Kabbalah reveals the system of the universe. It is the physics of the entire world, which is revealed to our senses, and also what we will reveal in the higher senses that we should develop in the attribute of bestowal rather than in the quality of reception.

Question: What is the oral Torah and the written Torah?

Answer: The oral Torah means that both the teacher and the student are together on a certain spiritual degree and are communicating with each other through it. The written Torah is when everything they have attained is getting written down into the texts and passed through them from one to another.

Question: This means that what Moses received from the Creator on Mount Sinai is the oral Torah. And when, after 1,000 years, all this was written down, then from the point of view of Kabbalah, this is no longer considered oral?

Answer: From the point of view of Kabbalah, the oral Torah is everything that a person attains within himself. It is practically impossible to describe or convey this because it depends only on the attainment of the person to whom you want to convey it.

Question: Is there any difference between the oral and written Torah in terms of influence on a person?

Answer: Of course. The oral Torah is higher than the written Torah because it is transmitted from mouth to mouth, that is, through common screens between teacher and student.

Question: Even if you wanted to is it impossible to transmit that in writing?

Answer: No. Nobody would understand. These are not words.

Question: Is that why the Torah says that it is forbidden?

Answer: What the Torah calls forbidden means impossible, impossible to transfer. When the people went into exile, they began to write everything down because it was necessary to somehow save something. There was such a desire and a law was passed to allow recording.

Question: Why is it not clear what is written in the Talmud, Mishnah, and The Book of Zohar?

Answer: Everything is clear in the Talmud and Mishnah. Everything is explained there allegorically, in the language of branches.

Comment: But to a person who is not in attainment, this is incomprehensible.

My Response: For a person who is not in spiritual attainment or who does not understand even approximately what is said in all these books, the whole Torah, everything that he discovers is like a textbook on biology, zoology, history, or some kind of fairy tale.

In fact, the Torah is an instruction for the correct mutual inclusion and unification of people, in which the Creator or life is manifested, which, in principle, is the same. Like when cells in the body are connected, life manifests itself in it, so when people unite with each other, the vital force is manifested at the next level.

There are people who have attained this and described it in their writings. Therefore, everything stated by them is called the written Torah.

There are things that cannot be described. They are revealed only through internal contact between teacher and student, which is called word of mouth (mi peh el peh). This is the oral Torah.

Question: Before you met your teacher, you studied various sources for several years. Can a book prepare a person for the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: It depends on the person. There are those who like novelty and they come to us to experience new feelings. However, these are usually not people who stay and become my students. Kabbalah is more for physicists than for poets even though it speaks of poetry—feelings.

Man is a desire. The desire to enjoy. He must know how to control his desire and use it to discover the world.

Question: Does it mean that a physicist can become a poet during studying?

Answer: Of course. The combination of these two inclinations is mandatory. In principle, feelings are the most important. But the way to control them correctly, according to the laws of the world and nature, this is Kabbalah.

Question: Why was it necessary after 1,000 years to write a commentary on the Torah?

Answer: It is impossible to pass the Torah from mouth to mouth all the time because each generation falls lower and lower. The next generation somehow changes what you pass on to them and partially begins to understand.

Question: Isn’t the information in the Pentateuch enough?

Answer: No. The Pentateuch is generally difficult to understand. It is perceived as an historical story and no one understands what is hidden behind it. Only the Kabbalists do.

Certainly The Book of Zohar is a full commentary on the Torah. But what a commentary! Does anyone understand what it says?

Question: What is the point of this commentary if no one understands it?

Answer: It is intended for Kabbalists who can use The Book of Zohar to understand what is written in the Torah.

Question: When you read The Book of Zohar, do you understand the Torah better?

Answer: Of course! And without The Book of Zohar, it is very difficult—there is no connection. The Zohar provides the connection between the Torah and what the Kabbalist attains.
