The Handmaid Who Seized the Mistress’s Place

294.2“This is called “a handmaid who is heir to her mistress,” since the very power of the mistress—the control of the internality—is by the force of our wisdom and knowledge, as it is written, “we are distinguished, I and Your people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.”
Now, the handmaid has stepped forth and prides herself in public that she is the heir of this wisdom” (Baal HaSulam “A Handmaid Who Is Heir to Her Mistress“).

Mistress means the desire to reveal the Creator and the handmaid is external aspirations.

The problem is that now the external part of the knowledge of nature prevails in the world. That is completely wrong because it turns all the devices and governance of the world upside down. It turns out that people do not want to perceive the inner part of nature, study it, and master it. That is how all sorts of other teachings appear.

Even though, initially the handmaid’s aspirations were intended to single out the mistress, it turned out that she seized the place of the mistress and rules instead of her and hides behind something else, which is lighter, more pleasant, and more understandable. Therefore, people do not want to do the hard work of revealing the Creator.

Question: If we are talking about a ten, how can we determine that the handmaid has taken or is beginning to take the place of the mistress?

Answer: This is a very serious issue. In principle, it all depends on how a person feels and what he is drawn to—either to reveal all sorts of secrets of the universe or to follow the recommendations of the Creator. That is the difference.

Endless Confrontation

229Question: The expression “clash of civilizations” is very common in the mass media. There are about ten civilizations in the world, but among them there are two main ones: Western and East Asian.

When you hear that there is conflict and different values between these two civilizations, what can you, as a Kabbalist, say about what is happening between them? What characterizes East and West?

Answer: At present there are no clearly defined civilizations. But if we talk about the East and the West, then Eastern civilizations are characterized by their commitment to religious problems, which they try to put into practice. And Western civilizations are more interested in the problems of their material existence. Therefore, the difference between them is quite large.

In Eastern civilization there are people who care very much whether their spiritual values are preserved, and they are ready to fight for this. Western civilization wants to preserve itself in the form in which it came to exist today. Therefore, it is very difficult for them to establish contact with each other.

Question: The great Kabbalist Baal HaSulam writes that there are two opposing forces in nature—negative and positive. They developed the entire material universe. If we talk about the human level, then these are the forces of good and the forces of evil. So, is war between these two forces the natural state of humanity?

Answer: Yes, this comes from the structure of their souls—Eastern and Western. It is unknown for how long this confrontation will continue. But so far, we see that it does not end.

The War of Values

1.02Question: From the point of view of Kabbalah we see that at the corporeal level there is some harmony within the inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature; otherwise our world would not exist. At the same time at the human level wars never stop. Why is war our most natural state?

Answer: War is our natural state because the biggest egoism is in the human being within all of nature.

The confrontation between the two civilizations, the East and West, is a war of values. The values that exist in the Eastern part belong to their internal structure. While the values that exist in the Western part are more mercantile and materialistic.

Therefore, the difference between them is very big—psychological, mental. Based on this we cannot say that certain values hinder us while certain ones bring us closer together.

Why Don’t Spiritual Pleasures Attract Us?

49.01Question: On one hand enjoyment is our life. What do we have beside it? On the other hand, this is described in Kabbalah in a very incomprehensible language. Even in our world we see how important it is for us to know, for example, the laws of physics. But how many people are interested in these laws?

Answer: We are only interested in what will benefit us, but the wisdom of Kabbalah, which studies the way to receive the upper light, is not in the sensations of our pleasures and therefore no one yearns for it.

Question: But we are talking about pleasures from reception, from connection with the Creator. What could be better?

Answer: It does not matter. Does anyone yearn for the Creator?

Comment: But 80% of humanity or even more are not atheists. Atheists are only 2% of the world.

My Response: It does not matter even if there were 100%. The fact is that we do not know, do not feel, and do not understand the connection with the Creator. We treat it based only on fear of death, disappearance, or misfortune. But in reality who needs the Creator in everyday life? We remember Him only when we feel bad.

If we saw that the Creator is the quality of love and bestowal, then we would rush to Him. But the Creator concealed Himself to make our path to Him easier. Otherwise, His pleasures would simply defeat us, obligate us to be His slaves. That is, we would interact with Him at the level of instincts like animals.

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence

959Question: Today, artificial intelligence is replacing vast areas of human activity, even creative ones.

According to forecasts, many professions will simply not be needed. A person will not be able to realize himself in anything. In that case, what will people do?

Answer: Self-education, they will think more deeply, desire more deeply, and tune themselves more deeply to attain the deeper layers of nature.

Question: Open AI CEO Sam Altman discussed their ChatGPT and GPT-4 in a podcast. In it he stated that he “believes AI can become conscious, but defining AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and consciousness is complex. He suggests a conscious AI should display understanding of self, have memory, and possess the capability of suffering. As we work towards AGI, it’s vital to consider these aspects of consciousness and ensure that AI systems align with human values and preferences” (Medium).

Do you think artificial intelligence has consciousness?

Answer: The fact is we must first determine what artificial intelligence is. Can intelligence be artificial? Can we somehow control it, or is it just some kind of mechanical toy for living bodies?

Question: Scientists in the field of artificial intelligence have coined a term to describe the rise of artificial intelligence: General Artificial Intelligence Takeoff. They say that at some point there will be a complete seizure of all human initiatives by artificial intelligence. It will replace absolutely everything and be in control of everything.

Do you have any fear of such a state?

Answer: Absolutely not. I do not believe it. Such a machine, such a robot can really do a lot, but it will never be able to rise above man. Of course, it can confuse us. We get confused even in the nonsense we invent and create today. But we have nothing to fear from the uprising of machines.

The Science of Working on the Heart

214Kabbalah is called a hidden science because it is revealed only to those who use it correctly, that is, through their unification and building a system of connections between them. They reveal this science within this network of connections.

The science of Kabbalah is not a product of the human mind, like some abstruse theory. To study Kabbalah, you do not have to be a person of particularly sharp mind. The main thing this science requires is that a person is ready and able to work on one’s heart.

These people must be able to organize their desires in such a way that all the desires of one person complement the desires of another one, and another one, etc. In this form, they build a network of connections between them in which they reveal the common power of bestowal, that is, the Creator.

The Desire to Know

214Humanity is in a huge deception because it does not want to explore nature. It does not want to scientifically explore itself and the world around it and only trust that.

If our desire and our perseverance went further into nature, it would bring us to the level of Kabbalists and would open all the worlds.

And how did the Kabbalists comprehend them? Only based on his desire to know the world as it really is: “I want to reveal everything! Is there a Creator? Reveal it! Is there a Higher World? Reveal it! Angels, beasts, devils, ghouls, reveal them!

I want to see everything, find out! Everything down to the smallest laws! I want to consist of everything, to absorb the whole universe, all the worlds!”

If we were not limited by our selfish desires, petty weaknesses, and religions, then we would all be on a completely different interplanetary, interstellar level! We would not be connected with this earth, with this world at all. It would all be somewhere in our lowest feelings and perceptions. We would be completely outside of all these restrictions!

Levels of Influencing a Person

231.01Question: Sometimes I simply cannot hear anything during a lesson; it’s like being a log, and sometimes I cling to every word. What is better and what should I aim for?

Answer: A person has two types of integration with the general field of people in the lesson. If he is not at all with them in thoughts and desires, then he is simply taking up space. Practically no currents pass through him at that time; he is not even a receiver.

Not much depends on him anyway, perhaps he is given a certain internal sensory integration of consciousness. Sometimes we perceive everything with an open mind, and sometimes we are half-conscious, half-asleep. It is quite possible that some internal psychological states are interfering with us. And all this affects us.

However, a person depends on one’s connection with the general system of people with whom one studies, to the extent a person was connected with them before, whether one made a covenant with them that even if he is more passive today, they still help him and take care of him. They not only take care of him, but everyone who temporarily drops out o tthe point that they can take over his functions in this general system.

Interaction between people occurs on several levels: on the sensory and on the informational, either at the level of our world or at the next deeper layers. This is how we work.

Baal HaSulam writes that even if a person speaks only Chinese but sits in the lessons, he will still begin to feel something. Of course, it will take time, but that does not matter. Perhaps he will enter into these feelings even more directly because he will begin to reveal the upper world, this system, this interconnection, this chain, within himself.

In my first book on Kabbalah written in 1983, I shared my feeling that our world lies on a grid woven from these forces. Many years have passed since then, but this impression not only has not changed, but has strengthened and revealed itself even more. The impression was correct. We study this grid in Kabbalah.

Comment: But there are students who sleep in the lessons and cannot help themselves.

My Response: It does not matter! Their time has not yet come. For now, they are accumulating internal potential, and then they will break through. I would say that the more complex, the more serious, the organization of a person is, the more severe and longer latent period of lack of awareness and feelings he has, does not matter. Let him continue.

The Degree of Development of a Point in the Heart

533.02Question: Are there people among your students without a point in the heart?

Answer: No, otherwise they would not have come here. But there are those who have it very deeply hidden. The gradual development of this point is taking place in those people. It also happens that people come to us out of pure curiosity and immediately leave.

There are also some who come to me and then go to others. They awaken in themselves a preliminary point in the heart, the point of Hasidism, and go to those who, perhaps, are also called Kabbalists, but instead of Kabbalah they are engaged in other spiritual techniques.

Question: I was told how one person was looking for Kabbalists. He came to one of them, and he, after literally touching him, said that he allegedly had such energy, etc. How much is it really visible?

Answer: Any gypsy woman or soothsayer like Messing, who is not a Kabbalist, can tell you the same thing. It has nothing to do with Kabbalah. Kabbalists do not possess such properties.

Gratitude to Those Who Paved the Way for Us

961.2Today is a special memorial day for Baal HaSulam, Rav Yehuda Ashlag, the great Kabbalist who paved the way for us that leads to the correction of the world. Thanks to him, we know how to behave in order not to make mistakes and stray from the path of the Creator.

Baal HaSulam’s methodology is based on the achievements of Kabbalists who lived before him. That is why we are grateful that we have such a teacher and that we can be his disciples, follow him in his way, and be sure that we will achieve the goal of creation in this lifetime.

Baal HaSulam left us many Kabbalistic articles and books and also taught his students, and most importantly, his eldest son, Baruch Ashlag (Rabash), who described the entire method of spiritual work suitable for our days, our time, for the souls descending into the world today.
