The Transition To A Single Family

Dr. LaitmanWe are passing through a unique period. If in the past our nature was close to the animate level and life obliged a person to establish a family since it was very difficult for him to supply himself with the necessities without it, these days, with the help of various means and technological achievements, we are completely able to remain single. If we cohabitate, it is not under the terms of marriage, not as a complete family.

And in this era, I still recommend getting married, establishing a family, and organizing life according to what nature demands of us. Sometimes they look at me with suspicion, as if I were calling for something oppressive and undesirable.

Today it seems illogical to push a person into marriage. After all, through this you load a heavy and debilitating burden on him, something that he cannot endure.

And on the contrary, it is so easy to live alone surrounded by electronic home appliances that do the work that in the past required great power. A person turns on a vacuum cleaner that moves itself, puts his clothes in the washing machine, goes to the supermarket, buys prepared food, puts it in the refrigerator or directly into a microwave, moves the laundry to the dryer, and doesn’t even take out the iron; he doesn’t need it.

Daily life is now much easier than in the past, but this doesn’t help the institution of the family. It would seem it would be a great relief when all sorts of devices do most of the work at home for you, where you don’t need to wash the baby’s diapers or cook porridge for him… everything is so easy and simple, but in spite of all this, so complicated.

We are facing a serious problem here, and if we want to see a good future for humanity and to advance in a good way, it seems that we must first of all take care of the people themselves. They must go through a general, basic training and understand what it is to be a human, to be connected to others.

After all, in the past our connection with the family, with parents and children, with the workplace environment and the community was easier. People drove and flew less, didn’t change their employers and professions so often. Life was spent in separate “corners,” in a small place. It was more static, relaxed, and stable. In contrast to this, today, with the increased pace and the many changes in life, we feel that a family is very burdensome for us.

So first it is necessary to give a person the right education, to change him internally so that he will see what is really happening. And even though life has changed, we have become detached from nature that encouraged us to live as tribes, families, villages, cities, countries, the whole world is like a place for all to live, and in spite of all this, it is up to us to make up for what we have lost. We once had a system of natural relationships with family and friends, with the city, with the nation, and now we must supplement the deficiency ourselves.

Without this a person remains neglected, abandoned; he seems to be lost in the crowd. He can get away from his parents and hardly ever communicate with them; and he can be in connection with friends mostly through the Internet. Our environment has generally become a virtual one. On the Internet I find a temporary friend for myself and am often satisfied with this.

In general, this is a temporary stage, a passing stage that will continue until a person discovers the gap between himself and his environment that he must make up by himself….

I begin life in my mother’s womb, I continue it in her arms, after that I go to kindergarten, to school, and all of these stages add an environmental “envelope” to me in which I must develop to such a degree that I will feel that I am an inseparable part of it, connected to everyone as I was once connected to my mother through the umbilical cord.

Ideally, any expansion of this environment doesn’t need to cause detachment. When I go to kindergarten, I am not detached from anything; on the contrary, they teach me about an even tighter connection with the new environment, and in kindergarten I feel as if I am at home, and at home, as if I were within my mother.

Time passes and I build a connection with the school environment based upon such good and friendly relationships of giving and receiving that even here I feel as if I am in the bosom of the family, a caring environment, because we are soldered together so tightly with love and mutual fulfillment. When I finally enter into the wider world, I continue to work with the environment on a basis of the principle of mutual compensation of necessary connections, and all of us feel as one family.

In fact, the only thing missing for me is such compensatory efforts: on my part toward an expanding environment and from its side toward me. my

side a continuously expanding relationship with the environment – from the side of the environment to me.

A Crisis In Familial Connections

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn general, nature obligates us to have extended connections in order to form stable environments for a person that will accompany him throughout his whole life, regardless of the processes and situations that he experiences.

However, even though we understand the original specifications of nature, we also see our defects that make it impossible to withstand the demands of nature and don’t permit the building of a normal life, even in merely physiological terms.

As far as it seems, this requires work from our side, hard work that is not easy that is inherent only in human freedom of choice. And the freedom of thought, word, and deed, which makes it possible to construct an independent life, is particularly expressed in the right approach regarding family. Accordingly, we must fulfill what is not activated within us instinctively through our nature.

I must be loyal to family, loyal to the nurturing and education of children until they are able to stand on their own and begin to establish their own families. And according to Jewish tradition, even though a person reaches adulthood at the age of thirteen and truly becomes an adult and independent at the age of twenty, even this is relative. Until then, nature obligates us to take care of him.

Nowadays it is difficult for people to sustain a family for such a long period of time. This again testifies to the crisis we are found in.

Fifty or sixty years ago, divorces seemed like a big disaster. People discussed such cases as something surprising and not understandable, as something exceptional. So as long as there was no social agreement about this issue, divorces were not easy and acceptable. People became divorced in very rare cases. Today it is difficult even to imagine what would have to happen for people to be ready for this type of situation.

However, in the last half century, the situation has changed dramatically. Now most couples get divorced, people get married a few times and raise children from different marriages. This no longer surprises anyone. Women sometimes prefer to have children without a husband and generally don’t want to marry.

When I appear before an audience, I sometimes ask an audience of 2,000 to 3,000, “How many single people are there present in this hall?” In this way they become aware that up to 80% of the participants are not in a familial relationship. And this is about people between the ages of 30-40 on average.

After that I ask: “Who among you is ready to get married?” Then most of those who respond positively are men, not women, which confirms that this is true. Somewhere inside, women don’t feel a need for family and children. Maybe something lacking is somehow burdensome to them, but to decide to marry and begin to create familial relationships, to feel involved and committed, is so difficult for our growing ego that they prefer to remain single.

They can take care of themselves relatively easily. They can provide themselves with all the necessities. Especially in our day, women often work better than men. In addition, they know how to manage home economics. Even though they are busy, they remain sufficiently free of all kinds of obligations and are open to the opportunities that the modern world offers.

On the other hand, it is not so easy for men. They lack the feminine care, they feel a bit more “suspended in air” than women, and often they are not prepared to take care of themselves. However, they also see family as a burden, a heavy yoke. If it were possible, modern man would prefer his mother over his wife. Family and children with all of their implications are not for him.

Eliminating Disparities In A Nation

laitman_426Question: You talk about the necessity for consolidating all people into one family, but isn’t this the dream of the European far right, “We are a family, and they are not”?

Answer: The problem of the far right faction is that it places its own people in a special place above all the rest of the peoples. However, we aren’t talking about elevation above others here, but about unity among the people. So, what’s wrong with that?

Suppose that I am French and other nations don’t interest me. France is absolutely enough for me, and I don’t want those who are not considered French to live in France. Moreover, this refers to French according to culture and not nationalism.

Belgians will come and even Jews. The main thing is that we have a generally uniform culture, a shared view of things. So, France is our common nation. We agree with its constitution, with its legislation, with its customs, norms, and language.

So, if a particular sector enhances this unity, then it doesn’t matter what it is called: right, left, center, etc. This approach is good as long as it is not realized at the expense of other nations. I don’t look at the others. I simply want my nation to live in peace and quiet, to be happy and prosperous.

What is bad about that? A person cares about his nation. He wants his people to live as one family. Even though he doesn’t have a broad vision or the moral force to be concerned about the inhabitants of other nations, and even though this is called “nationalism,” it is in a good sense. He is not a chauvinist. He has no hatred towards others, toward foreigners. He is only concerned about his own people, and not at the expense of others either.

It is true that, in a case like this, the nation is not ready to enter into some kind of partnership as in the example of the present European Union, but there is no need for it either. First its people pass through the new education, strive for equality, to unity, to a common general level accepted by all. Gradually, people will absorb new values in that they, themselves, already want to attain some kind of optimal average, a basket of necessary products and services that are uniform for everyone.

Certainly, we don’t say one size fits all. Prosperity can vary by two or three times as much. However, in sum, this is a small difference, the social “play” and not a social abyss as it is today.

Question: If the extreme right will accept an approach like this, will they increase their success?

Answer: Certainly, for this it is necessary to change the legislation in the appropriate direction. In a big way, it is necessary to record what is essential. All of the inhabitants of the nation must accept its culture. They must be, let’s say, French, regardless of religious faith. The person must be loyal to the homeland to which he has come.

For example, the African-Americans in the United States don’t act against their nation. They specifically feel themselves to be Americans. Yes, they have differences of opinion with other sectors, but they live in their nation.

In accordance with this, in Europe, even if you are a Muslim, you must maintain your allegiance to the nation in which you live. Otherwise, you invalidate your right to live there.

Question: Is national unity like this a prerequisite for world unity?

Answer: No, but now we are talking about a specific region, about European nations in which the tension between sectors has grown, and in this context the European Union is not found on the agenda for the meantime. It is possible to speak about economic and military cooperation, but this is not unity. Rather, these are joint activities on a contractual basis.

On the other hand, true unity represents a transition to familial relationships. This is something that is much denser, more intimate, deep and comprehensive, when all of Europe truly becomes a common home for its inhabitants. However, they are not ready for this today because they are very distant from each other.

Movie Tickets Instead Of Bread

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What happens to a person when he enters a theater and becomes impressed by its special atmosphere? Where do his daily thoughts and worries go?

Answer: It is a known fact that big fish eat small fish. So if a person watching events on stage experiences a much greater emotion than all his other emotions, then he forgets all his worries.

During the great depression in the US during the 1930s, people would buy movie tickets instead of bread. The film was more important than food because it evoked great emotions in them. They forgot about themselves for the duration of the movie and did not need bread.

Question: Why is it so important for a person to forget about themselves for a couple of hours?

Answer: It gives them unlimited fulfillment. Bread can fill one’s stomach, but while eating it, the person will be swallowing each piece with tears, suffering because he is poor and miserable. This way he does not become free from the difficulties and the problems that life brings. He worries about his family, wife, children, his household, and sees how helpless and poor he is.

But when he goes to the theater and experiences the life of a king in a castle, which is so distant from his own life, he is prepared to pay for this experience. He identifies with the protagonists and feels like they are equal. He spends two hours in a magical world. Consumed with the performance, the viewer ceases to exist; he becomes a sponge that absorbs everything that goes on the stage.

Question: But where does his own life go during these two hours?

Answer: His own life disappears and he feels like he exists in a wondrous dream. In reality, our current life is also a dream… But this is a whole other play.

Nature Is Unity

Laitman_707We live in a “bubble” of nature, the still, vegetative, and animate. Through this we provide for our existence. And this environment “transmits” or arranges for us precisely those conditions that are required for our advancement.

In this way we are given an abundance of constant changes. Indeed, in general, it is necessary to understand that beginning from the Big Bang this process has continued to this very day, and for its entire length, the general power of development has moved us forward toward its goal, toward complete balance.

During the course of this process, the nature of the still, vegetative, and animate developed on the face of the earth, and after that the human species. And at a particular moment in history, whether it wanted this or not, the human species had to take the “reins,” meaning the management tools into its hands to be properly included in development.

From this moment on we have been involved with the process not as we were before. Until becoming aware of the situation, we developed instinctively in a way similar to the nature of the still, vegetative, and animate, among whom there are also plenty of troubles, problems, and the pressure of circumstances, including disasters.

But the more we have developed, the more we have become linked to the process; we participate in it consciously and with understanding, and this is how we have more problems. For now they are contingent upon this: Do we accept the message ourselves, are we developing together with nature? If so, it will be good for us, and if not, it will be bad for us, depending on our level of development.

Adam was the first to discover the general process of evolution through which we must go, not only on the “beastly” material level, but also on the human level. Beginning from Adam, who lived 5775 years ago, we have moved on to a new phase. We are “embedded” within nature; according to the degree of participation with it, we are ready to arouse and invite upon ourselves, as well as the overall levels of the still, vegetative, and animate, a good, pleasant, rapid, and easy development.

Natural development is generally characterized by very strict stages. They are similar to a difficult birth, they are connected to stress, problems, and dangers, and are accompanied by dramatic natural phenomena. For millions of years the Earth has cooled, hardened, and again warmed, torn by the pressure of magma.

Geological eras were replaced, the nature of the earth was changed, individual species died and others appeared, the warming and cooling alternated, and finally we reached the present situation, which is not final either. We also continue developing; moreover, it is more rapid than in previous eras.

In general, all of this has been contingent on the general force of nature, which the wisdom of Kabbalah explores in depth. The concepts of “divinity” and “nature” are identical, for this speaks about a power that has a precise general plan within which we must be integrated, gradually understanding and attaining it. We must be included within it consciously and with knowledge by discovering a more and more mature participation. This integration is also recorded in it.

Returning to Adam, he was the first to discover this program and understand that nature seeks balance. This means that we balance ourselves with the nature of the still, vegetative, and animate, and likewise build balance between us on the human level such that ultimately every person on the face of the Earth will feel that there is no rift or detachment between us and between everything that is found outside of us; this is called the development of consciousness. I reach an awareness, an understanding, a feeling, that all of nature is a unified system. And with this unified system I am in harmony, in reciprocity, in homeostasis, in a mutual exchange of materials, thoughts, and desires.

In this manner I must ultimately nullify all detachment and gaps between what I feel now as self and what feels external. My skin doesn’t separate me from the world and the environment anymore. I reach awareness and an understanding that everything belongs to a single unified system; it is all the essence of the self.

The human level is like this. Our bodies belong to the animate world, whereas our essence belongs to the human level, which is higher. Its uniqueness is that in it we see we perceive the world as a single whole.

In this single and unique world we discover the unique power of nature that manages everything, and we identify and merge with it. Anyone who has tried to attain nature as balance of a single whole has discovered and attained this process precisely to its final state where we join and merge with the surrounding force of nature.

The last “station” on the way of our development is like this. We don’t know what will happen after this. Indeed there is also some further stage…

laitman_565_02Question: Why do people like to recollect past events, even if they were tragic?

Answer: If an event recedes into the past, it is no longer perceived as a physical action, it leaves behind only the emotional experience. Moreover, a person now has an opportunity to understand the past and feel it deeply.

People love to read stories or listen to songs that remind them of past trials, to share memories about what they went through in Stalin’s or concentration camps that they miraculously managed to survive.

They reminisce about their unrequited love, about separation from loved ones, namely, about various dramas of their lives. But later, it is all mitigated, since this is how our life works. The whole life is a theater. This is the realization that we come to at the end of our life, we acquiesce, we see that it is indeed so, and therefore we view life’s entire traveled path as a theatrical performance.

We are ready to stop worrying about the past, having understood that it had to happen exactly so. The play is over, the curtain falls, and this life comes to an end.

Theater, therefore, has much to teach us. If it is a truly good production, we are ready to pay high prices for tickets, and we get ready for the outing to the theater as for a special event.

Throughout the two hours of the play, a whole period of life unfolds in front of us along with its ensuing moral. We see life’s situations that we can learn from and draw personal conclusions, imagining ourselves in the place of the characters. The theater has a very high educational potential, the only question is: How it can be used correctly?

The Root Of Ebola: Isolation Will Not Help

Laitman_703_04Question: You say that today we represent a single organism. Consequently, ailments of society apply to each individual because he is part of the whole?

Answer: Yes. What is needed today is general calculation. After all, we have closed the entire globe, all the continents, all civilizations, all the nations and peoples into a single planetary civilization system. Therefore, no one alone can correct anything in it. On the contrary, all decisions must be all-inclusive.

We already see and will see more and more clearly in the coming years how various natural disasters affect everyone. In oriental medicine, it is customary to find out what exactly caused the disease in a person.

Today, a collective illness, which affects everyone, is added to this. Therefore, treatment should be comprehensive, holistic, and not fragmented.

Only in recent years have we begun to understand that humanity is a single entity. We have taken hold of the entire globe, have established a variety of interconnections, found ourselves dependent upon each other, and all of them are the outward signs of our undivided unity. That is why the imbalance in one place is reflected on everyone.

In the past, what did the Indians have to do with what was happening in Europe? They did not even know of its existence. The same with the Australian aborigines and many others. The Chinese have long been shut off from the world; the Japanese did not let foreigners in.

But today, everything has changed. We are one, entwined by the threads of interconnections. The internal evolution of human society seemingly weaved a blanket, common for everyone, and covered the Earth with it.

That is why no one can isolate himself from the world to establish happiness in one individual country or village. Isolation will not help because it cannot be achieved. No one can escape to his own private island in the middle of the ocean.

The system does not take into account our childish attempts to hide in a shell. The system’s forces and laws penetrate any wall and barrier, merging everyone together. No matter how much you distance yourself, no matter how much you isolate yourself, you are connected by invisible threads with all of humanity, and its fate will still be yours.

We will see how the most “protected” countries become vulnerable, despite all the precautions. If imbalance has affected the system, then it has affected all the nations and continents to the extent of how much each of them lacks balance.

In the end, one way or the other, everything depends only on the imbalance of human society. Therefore, only by maintaining social balance can we protect our health. If we want to get rid of diseases, then it is one more reason to balance social relations. Otherwise, no medications will help.

It all starts with a person. People need to know that they are in a unified system that must be brought into balance, as this is the benchmark, the sign and the basis of all types of health: physical, family and social.

Question: What does it mean, “to bring into balance”? How is it expressed?

Answer: It means that we interact with each other as if we are parts of one body. Indeed it is in reality. Any system is a body, parts of which care about each other.

At least, it is necessary, finally, to think about this; we need initial advancements in this direction. And then we will see how Ebola along with other ailments retreats, releasing enormous resources that are being invested today in pharmacology and medicine. They will not require these investments, if only we will support social health.

A Theatrical Marvel

laitman_285_04Question: Theater is a well-known phenomenon from antiquity. Performances on stage began in ancient Greece, but in the more primitive tribes it was customary to gather around a fire, dress in animal skins, and depict the mammoth hunt.

With the passage of time, theater went through a multitude of changes, but the unusual sensation of wonder that came to life on the stage that was connected to it was preserved. A person who comes to the theater feels himself so much a part of this marvel that already when he buys tickets, he begins to look forward to it, to sense and experience it like a child.

He comes to the theater, sits in his seat, and feels the crowd filling the hall. The light gradually dims, and in the hall a pleasant tension grows in expectation of the raising of the curtain and the appearance of the actors on the stage.

Thus a unique feeling appears as if, at this moment, you are detached from all of the daily problems and concerns, and are immersed in another life. What is this particular wonderful experience that occurs in people in the theater?

Answer: There is such a thing as the influence of the environment on a person. To a particular degree, it is also typical of animals, and, whereas a person feels the influence of the environment very much, it could consist of only one person or it could consist of thousands of people.

Everything depends only upon how strongly the person perceives the influence of the environment. If a person important to him, then one person is enough. This means that the quality is important here. However, if there are millions of people, then they are influential through their quantity. In any case, a person enters under the influence of the environment.

We are not very susceptible to the influence of children, but adults are able to affect us, and the higher they are in our eyes, the more influential. Fear, ambition, envy and a craving for dominance also are mixed in here.

As we come to a theater, we are already prepared to enter the influence of the artificial environment that will present some unique event to us. It could be that it is not completely realistic, but it somehow is connected to the life of man.

This often is presented ecstatically as very strong love, hatred, fear, and despair, or some kind of bright, historical event. All of this is inflated intentionally by external means of influence and brought to the viewer.

Music is even added that greatly enhances the experience. For anyone who knows opera, it is the most powerful, influential tool.

A person loves to enter under the influence of the presentation because it connects with his life. Even though he hasn’t experienced events of this type himself, he still can imagine them for himself.

We love theater because it is ready to remind us about experiences that we have gone through, and they can even be tragic events, but the deeper you go into the past, the more they are mollified, so we like to look at them. We identify with the experiences of the actors and even cry with them with emotion.

We even are ready to pay money for this! This is very strange. We experience fear, excitement, and even cry and all of this we pay for. However, the idea is that the person perceives these concerns and experiences when they are mollified. He understands that these are not realistic concerns from his life, but only impressions from the show, and so he likes them.

The theater makes it possible to experience sensations like these again and again that today seem pleasant and sweet. This indicates that everything that we went through in life, even the most tragic events, are ultimately sweetened. They are mollified such that that we agree that we had to go through all of these situations, for this was our life, and, in life, there is a place for everything.

This suggests that nothing in life is accidental; every event that happens is a part of the fate that is given to us intentionally from above, and we must go through it. Ultimately, we agree that everything that we experienced in our lives was justly and necessarily sent to us. So, we justify every step of our way because we understand its benefit.

The Root Of Ebola: My Health Is Not In My Hands

laitman_547_04We ourselves produce phenomena such as Ebola; we ourselves cause such outbreaks, spikes of imbalances. Much was told about this in the framework of ancient healing practices, including Eastern ones.

Modern medicine has evolved over the past few centuries and before that a real doctor was not limited to giving remedies.

Many ancient sages and healers pointed out at the importance of a person’s mental equilibrium, which has an effect on his bodily balance, on his health.

However, then times were different, we weren’t yet so interconnected with each other and so every person individually could determine the state of his health, taking care of the balance of his internal system with nature, with the environment. Accordingly, a doctor could treat him with tinctures and other natural substances, which had a real impact.

Today, they are powerless because we have been poisoned by the environment and are on a completely different level of development of egoism. But in the past, natural remedies, consisting of the elements of the still, vegetative, and animate nature, did their work, along with the measures to maintain or restore the patient’s balance with the environment on the human level.

Nowadays, this factor barely depends on the person himself. The close ties of the “global village,” the universal interconnection, do not allow him to balance and heal himself really just by natural means. In a global world, balance depends not on one person, but on society.

Therefore, I would recommend international organizations such as the UN, UNESCO, WHO and others to take care of this problem. But they should take care properly, understanding that from time immemorial to the present day, in the end everything depends only on the balance between people, which from this degree “spreads” downwards, to the lower levels of nature and our being.

Predatory Things of the Century

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (from Psyfactor): “‘Prophets of the Old Testament called those people who worshiped objects and things that they made with their own hands “the idolaters.” Their “gods” were things made of wood or stone.

‘The meaning of idol worshipping is in transferring all feelings, the force of love, and power of thought onto external objects. Contemporary people are idolaters. We perceive ourselves only through things we own.’ (Eric Fromm)

“The world of things continues to grow. A human being becomes smaller next to so many objects. Contemporary people define their existence by announcing: “I buy, therefore I am.” Being a “thing,” we confirm that we are alive only because we communicate with other objects.

“Costs of houses, furniture, cars, clothes, watches, computers, TV sets are the basis for the social status of an individual. When people lose a part of their belongings, it’s as if they lose a part of themselves. When they lose everything they have, they are totally lost.

“During economic crises, those who lose a significant part of their property commit suicide; they jump out of skyscrapers’ windows. Their wealth was in fact a substitute for their personality. Committing suicide as a result of financial bankruptcy in such a system of cultural values is very logical. Suicidal acts signify the bankruptcy of a personality, individuality.

“Previously, people also associated themselves with things, but never before did inanimate objects occupy such a high ranking in the system of social recognition as happened during the last decades, when consumption turned into the means of evaluating the status of an individual.

“The program of upbringing of those who subordinate their lives to work began; a new phase was launched – a stage of turning people into ‘consumers.’ The economy needed not only disciplined workers; good, disciplined customers who kept buying new goods as they showed up on the market were extremely essential.

“Advertising of consumer behavior was meant to get rid of the centuries-old traditions of buying only necessary things. Propaganda of a new ideology made people think that happiness was all about a non-stop buying process of new things.

“Consumers stay assured that they are the ones who make a choice of whether or not to buy certain products. However, advertising expenditures frequently reach more than 50% of the cost of goods sold. This fact speaks for itself: figures show how much energy and talent are being contributed to the process of persuading consumers to continue buying.”

Comment: At this time, we evaluate and realize previous developmental stages. as we move away from the current, consumption model of society. It is happening not because we became internally richer and thus don’t need any external signs to demonstrate our significance. Rather, the desire that requires a new type of fulfillment, a realization of the purpose of our existence constantly evolves in us.

Even though affectations on stages and screens push us back, still evolvement of our aspiration to reveal the essence of life is inevitable. It will eventually lead us to acknowledgment and recognition of the wisdom of Kabbalah.
