Question: What happens with us when we read texts from The Book of Zohar?

Answer: By reading The Book of Zohar we directly or indirectly attract the upper light upon ourselves if that is what we desire. The Book of Zohar is a mechanism that is triggered by our desire while reading the book.

There are mechanisms that we start mechanically by pressing a button. There are mechanisms that are started by a voice, a glance, or a thought. And there are those that can be ignited by desire.

We evoke spiritual forces precisely by our desires if our desires are aimed at them. But at the same time, I must be in front of the corresponding mechanism.

The Book of Zohar is the system, the mechanism that is in front of me. But I activate it not with a glance, not with my finger moving along the lines, and not by reading aloud in any language, but by my desire that does not have a language, the desire to receive the light from this Book, the force that changes me, improves, and brings me to the state of connection, unity with the entire universe, with all nature.

If I have it, then to the extent of this desire, I evoke upon myself the influence of the upper force. This is how it happens.

Question: And if I do not have this desire, and I open this ancient Book thinking that some secrets will be revealed to me that I will be able to use, say, as an actor?

Answer: It does not matter, very good. In any case, you already have some connection with this Book. You understand that it has something. You don’t know what, but everyone says that there is something so interesting, mysterious, some secrets, tricks, sorcery, magic. It is enough, have a desire to get something from it.

The Book of Zohar, Chayei Sarah (The Life of Sarah), Item 87: When one observes the tweeting of fowl to know the future, why is it called “a serpent” and “witchcraft”? It is because it extends from that side of impurity, since the spirit of impurity is over that bird, which announces things in the world. And every spirit of impurity clings and comes to the world from the serpent, and there is none who is saved from him in the world, for he is in everything—until the time when the Creator is destined to remove him from the world, as it is written, “And death shall be swallowed up forever.”

Question: What do birds have to do with it? What harm did they do?

Answer: Birds are something that is higher than us, that is, a lighter desire. There are animals, fish, birds, plants, and so on. This means that our egoistic desire is stronger, heavier, coarser, and more subtle, light, graceful. Birds are the personification of less selfish desires.

Remark: But for some reason impurity comes from them.

Answer: Because people who are fortune tellers, in principle, already trust someone. Their egoism is not yet highly developed. Real strong egoists can trust someone only if they have a hopeless situation when very serious things are at stake.

They have done everything to ensure their success, and yet, they see that there is some element that they do not control. Then they go to fortune-tellers or shamans. It happens.

I have seen interesting examples of this in America. I have a friend who is a very wealthy man and owns huge motel estates in North Carolina. It so happened that drunkards and drug addicts started to visit these properties and committed tomfooleries.

Neither he, nor the police, nor the court could do anything. Then he turned to Indian shamans at the time I was passing through there visiting him. And what is interesting is he believed in it! I have seen all these primitive routines. People believe it will help.

Question: So did it help or not?

Answer: No, it did not help. In the end, he sold everything.

When does it help? When a man is sick and believes very much that what is recommended to him will help. The placebo effect. You take a sugar-pill believing that it is a medicine, and at the same time you include such inner forces that rejuvenate you and heal you. This is natural.

The Book of Zohar, Chayei Sarah (The Life of Sarah), Item 81: Balaam learned all those charms that he did from his father. Aza and Azael are two forces in creation that channel light on our egoistic desires and strengthen them. Therefore, it is very difficult for a person to get out of egoism; he sees reinforcement in his egoistic desires. That is, I can use my egoism and feel some fulfillments in it that constantly hold me as if I were bound by them. As it is written: ”They are tied there in iron chains and alert charms to people.”

“Mountain—Har” is from the word “Irurim—doubts.” They arise due to the fact that egoism seems to give me some kind of fulfillment. Although every time I feel that I am not filled, I do not achieve a certain state of balance, comfort, or something good in my life, the ego pulls me, attracts me, with certain light.

This property is transmitted to us through the two forces called Aza and Azael. They were once good properties. Before they sinned, they were in bestowal, love for their neighbor, in connection with people.

As it was said, before sinning, all people were like one single nation and they felt themselves as one common whole, as the organs of one body feel complete interconnection with each other and understand that they cannot live without each other. And this existence was natural for them. As a mother loves a child, so people used to love each other. These are just amazing, seemingly completely unnatural forms of life.

But they originally existed on the spiritual level. And then when this level fell into the abyss of egoism, the forces that supported us in spirituality turned into impure egoistic angels Aza and Azael.

Comment: Very often I take a Kabbalistic book, open it at random, and read the page that I opened.

My Response: This is very good because it does not matter what you read. All Kabbalistic books carry light that changes you. Therefore, it does not matter what you read. The main thing is the intention: you want to change, you want to rise, you want to induce the influence of the upper light, which exists everywhere, on yourself.

The fact that you, as it were, accidentally open the book, you thus give the choice to the Creator. The lot will be cast by Him, not by you. This is how Rabash taught me. I want to read something, see something, get some answer to my state so I open the book at random.

This is not fortune-telling. It is just a feeling that I am walking with the Creator and not with some dark forces or launching terrible, unknown mechanisms. No. I call upon myself the upper light in union with the Creator and give Him the opportunity to guide my actions.

Question: If we originally existed on the spiritual level, why were we lowered into the abyss of egoism?

Answer: In order for us to have freewill.

Question: Did we not have freewill, even when we used to love each other?

But this mechanism is necessary in order to give you the quality of bestowal, the quality of love for your neighbor so that it comes from you, and you understand what is in creation. To do this, you need to be placed between two opposing forces, and with their help you begin somehow to choose what is better, what is worse, why, what for.

You would have the knowledge, analysis, and synthesis of all kinds of phenomena. Then you will know yourself and from yourself, the Creator.

Question: Did we not feel the Creator before?

Answer: No. You felt only yourself, as if you were inside Him like a fetus in the womb of a mother that carries out absolutely all her commands, is completely under her control, but at the same time, he is nobody and nothing.

You annul yourself so much that these few kilograms of someone else’s body, which are inside the mother’s body, are not felt by her as an undesirable element. Although we always have a reaction of rejection of a foreign body, this body does not feel alien, but on the contrary, is loved and desired. Imagine how much this is created by nature inversely to what exists in our world!

The material state of intrauterine development is similar to the spiritual state. If we could now, at the level we are at, consciously annul ourselves in relation to spirituality and give ourselves to it completely, we would begin to feel it, but in a minimal volume, as minimal intrauterine spiritual life.

Question: Do we influence the rest of the people by the fact that a large enough number of people are studying Kabbalah?

Answer: Of course! We are in one single system, as if in one spiritual body, we are mutually connected, and therefore, directly influence each other.

Question: Why did the authors of The Book of Zohar first have a desire to kill each other?

Answer: Because in the course of their work they revealed their true essence: how torn apart and disconnected they were and how they hated each other.

We do not yet represent the egoism that exists in each of us. It is a terrible egoism when there is no mother, no father, no wife, no children, no one, and nothing for me. For the sake of my most scanty pleasure, I am ready to destroy everyone, without regrets, without any calculations, just like that.

That is, I do not have any relationship with the others, I cannot see others, except for the sake of my own petty pleasure. This is my nature, as well as everyone else’s. Anyone who denies this simply does not yet understand how he was created.

Therefore, first of all, we need to achieve this negative state. As it is said: “I created egoism and created the Torah to correct it.”

Question: It seems strange. After all, if I move toward the Creator, shouldn’t  I feel more and more love and certainly not hatred for my friends?

Answer: You begin to reveal more and more egoism in yourself, and thanks to this you rise above it. On one hand, you need great egoism, on the other hand, a greater influence of the light, with the help of which you constantly rise above it.

The ego grows, and you rise above it. Thus, starting at the foot of the broken “statue” that you are rebuilding, you go up to its head. The material is added, egoism is added, and you glue it more and more.

You find yourself in this statue, connected with the rest of the souls into one single whole, into one single organism, where everything is mixed, and everything is common. The identification remains but such that you feel connected with everyone. Here is a paradox.

On the one hand, you feel your individuality, which consists in the fact that you are completely dissolved with everyone in one whole. In addition, the Creator binds you together. He fills you and is constantly with you.

As a result, a single whole is formed that includes you, all other souls along with you, and together with all of you—the Creator. All this is brought together so that on one hand, you can discern: this is me, this is the soul, this is the Creator, and on the other hand, everything is absolutely connected. Then you begin to feel equal to the Creator. So is each one of us.

That is, individuality does not disappear, but, on the contrary, multiplies. This is a very specific understanding. We will gradually reach it.

Question: Does the hatred between friends and the desire to kill each other that is written about in The Book of Zohar always remain?

Answer: But of course! This separation remains, and a union is created over it, and, moreover, the greatest, most absolute love. But it must exist above hatred, otherwise it does not exist.

There is not one quality. Only the Creator represents one quality—the quality of bestowal and love. And creation must exist separately from the Creator, otherwise it will be lost. If we completely dissolve in Him, then we no longer exist.

How can we make sure that we exist and are equal to the Creator, similar in everything? For this there are two qualities in us: the original, absolute egoism, and the clothing on it, absolute bestowal and love, absolute altruism. One overlaps the other. But one cannot exist without the other.

That is, we are created from two opposite qualities, giving and receiving, and these two qualities complement each other.

Therefore, inside there is absolute hatred and egoism, which is converted in its external outpouring into love and giving to others.

And then a person remains a person, a creature, but completely equal to the Creator. This is not perceived by us. We don’t understand that. Egoism is called “help against you,” as if it exists opposite to you.

He is not standing in front of me, but inside me. It seems to me to be my opponent, but in fact, when you start to correct it, you see that you have something to correct, something to rise above, thanks to which you can learn, attain, and build yourself.

Therefore, it is the material from which you restore the broken statue. Without these egoistic pieces, you would have nothing to collect. You don’t really work with egoism itself. You work on gluing the pieces of souls together, you work on the connection between the corrupted souls.

Question: Why was The Book of Zohar, which was intended for our generation, written so long ago in the second century of our era?

Answer: Because it was written by sages who were in the attainment of the spiritual world at the greatest level, the level of complete correction of the soul,2,000  years ago.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and nine of his disciples, each of whom represented a special spiritual category, joined together, and in this connection formed the image of Adam, complete similarity to the Creator. This happens as follows: there are people who want to gather the pieces of their souls together, and with this aspiration they also call on the Creator, the upper force, the power of light, to create a glue between them. And so they gradually glue themselves together.

The correct interaction between the pieces of souls and the Creator at each stage of the reconstruction of the image of a human is the impact of The Book of Zohar—how we can unite with each other, gradually, step by step, evoke the influence of the upper light, the upper force that connects us, and we reconstruct ourselves and bring us to a complete, absolute, perfect state.
