To Not Live Forever

592.04The Book of Zohar, Genesis, 3:22: Now the Lord God said, “Behold man has become like one of us, having the ability of knowing good and evil, and now, lest he stretch forth his hand and take also from the Tree of Life and eat and live forever.”

Question: Is it necessary to live forever? It depends on what kind of life.

Answer: Indeed. There are many people who would gladly part with life painlessly because it is a chain of suffering.

And yet, we have a kind of an inner stopper that does not allow us to part with life and makes us suffer. If it were not for it, then I am sure that a huge number of people would calmly do it. Like this: you take a pill and fall asleep because, in principle, there are no prospects.

Therefore, it is said that now that a person has fallen into a terrible state, into egoism, it is necessary to arrange it so that he cannot kill himself, so that there would be forces in him and in the surrounding nature that would force him to develop although this development is very difficult.

Question: But why is it said “so that he would not live forever”?

Answer: This means that he would not remain forever in the egoistic state.

For this, on one hand, it is necessary that certain forces restrain a person all the time from ending his earthly existence within the framework of the animal body, and on the other hand, give him the opportunity to develop without feeling himself eternal, perfect and constantly feeling a state of thirst, lack, aspirations toward something. Thus, he will gradually return to the previous state from which he fell.

From The Top Of Snir And Hermon

740.03Zohar for All, Shemot [Exodus], Item 16: “From the top of Snir and Hermon” is Mount Sinai, to which they drew near and gathered at its foot, as it is written, “And they stood at the foot of the mountain.”

“And they stood at the foot of the mountain,” means that all human desires within us are standing at the foot of the mountain, hate each other, hate the entire world, and are ready to use everything and everyone just for their own sake.

“From the top of Mount Sinai” means that we ascend to the level of Bina (the quality of complete bestowal). In truth, only our point in the heart, our yearning for the Creator called Moses, rises and reveals the Creator there.

If Mount Sinai is the mountain of Bina (the quality of mercy, bestowal, and love), then Hermon is the mountain of Hochma (the quality of wisdom).

Therefore, Mount Hermon is white, covered with snow, that is, the quality of wisdom. All the light descends from this mountain just as all the streams and rivers descend from it and flow through the land of Israel.

In the end, both mountains merge together: the light of Hochma dresses in the light of Bina.

A Word — An Imprint Of The Upper Force

151Question: There are no words in the spiritual world. And yet, Kabbalah uses them to pull us into the spiritual world. What is a word? How should we use it?

Answer: A word is a set of forces that combine with each other in certain ways, passing from letter to letter and word to word, forming a specific order of forces that, by changing and mixing with each other, create words out of letters and sentences out of words.

In general, these are the forces of the universe, which includes still, vegetative, and animate natures, and us—all of it together. That is, words tell us about what is happening in this world and in all of the worlds.

Words are a record of vectors, a record of upper forces. Thus, when we read the Torah correctly, as it is explained by The Book of Zohar, we are talking about the entire program from the beginning of creation to the end, with all of its sequence, how it passes through all the matter of the universe, dividing and creating it.

It is as if it sculpts the universe and kneads it, as dough is kneaded, from the inanimate, vegetative, animate, and human parts. In this case, all the parts are connected to each other, and each of them develops. This is what the Torah talks about from the beginning to the end.

A Rope To Grab Onto

236.02Question: All the four exiles of Israel are felt to be rather severe states. How can one understand anything and advance in such terrible descents? What should one do?

Answer: Be above all problems and understand that they all are created so that you can feel them and be able to rise above them. Nothing else. After all, it is possible to pull us out of our egoistic matter only when we feel how much we suffer in it. Otherwise, you will not be able to rise above it.

Question: Where is that rope that one can grab in order to rise above this?

Answer: This rope appears when a person is in complete despairs of his abilities. It is not so easy to achieve this state. But The Book of Zohar accelerates this process.

Baal HaSulam writes that the happiest moment in a person’s life is when he begins to feel to what extent he is unable to understand and realize anything. He is completely lost, like a small child who is trembling, and crying having lost his way in a deep forest.

When one reaches such a state of absolute despair from his inability to change something in himself or in the world around him, he feels hopelessness, insignificance, meaninglessness, and then the light of redemption comes to him, which gives him a feeling of eternity, perfection, and the necessity to integrate himself into the creation.

Only in a state of extreme exhaustion of his own strength, when he sees that he cannot help himself with anything, does he begin to need the upper force that will manifest in him and lead him upward.

We believe that by our own strengths, properties, and mind we are capable of everything: “How can we sacrifice our own I”? But in fact, when a person gives up all this, he suddenly feels totally free. Therefore, our most important task is to break away from our egoism.

Why Do We Not Feel Spiritual Processes In Ourselves?

525Question: Why does a person not understand that while reading The Book of Zohar, he is engaging with the greatest thing that exists in reality?

Answer: If a person was shown what was happening to him, he would not be able to relate to it correctly.

For example, if a child could understand why he is developing like this: running from corner to corner, touching, trying, breaking, crying, he would already be above the level he is on.

The fact is that spiritual development does not happen in the same way as in our world where we go to university and fill our voids with knowledge while studying. Here is the development of feelings and desires that we do not possess.

Under the influence of light, we develop completely new properties in ourselves, which we initially do not have. When we reach their definite development, these properties are born in us, and we begin to feel the upper world in them.

But until they have developed, we cannot see them, feel them, or understand them because there must be some threshold to which we must grow and acquire a minimum level of sensitivity.

Outside Matter

707The Torah is called a means for gaining freedom—freedom from the angel of death. During this life, we must go through four stages of the right correction and use of our egoism. It helps us from the other side, by harming us, it helps us rise above it.

By using the ego correctly, a person attains eternity. He begins to feel himself on a level above egoistic level. If only we could imagine what it means to reach this level! We enter a state that exists without consuming, not absorbing into ourselves, but only bestowing, as if you are outside of matter, outside of absorption. Such a state is determined in us and is felt by us as eternal.

This, in principle, is what Kabbalah gives us. It does not speak about this world at all, its nations, and lands, about how you settle down here with your problems: bank, work, health, and family.

Kabbalah only talks about how to bring a man to a higher level where you no longer exist in matter, and therefore, are eternal.

The Perspective Of The Development Of The Soul

944Baal HaSulam, “The Prophecy“: I raised my eyes, and behold, the Lord stood over me and said to me: “I am the Lord, God of your fathers. Raise your eyes from the place on which you stand before Me and see the whole of reality that I have created existence from absence, upper and lower together, from their very creation in the unfolding of reality through their continuous evolution to their completion, as befits the work of My hands by which to be glorified.

The Creator shows Baal HaSulam the perspective of the development of all souls during the period when they begin to correct themselves starting from our generation onward until all of humanity gathers together in one single group in love, in mutual guarantee, mutual connection with each other.

Humanity will represent one single soul in which the Creator is revealed. This state is called the world of infinity, a complete correction that we must achieve in the near future.

For this, we are given The Book of Zohar with the Sulam Commentary.

In The Circle Of Mutual Pleasure

239Comment: In our world, it is generally believed that love is when you give all of yourself to the person you love. While in the example of guest and host, some kind of rational relationship is proposed, very similar to Western families that condone independence: “This is yours and that is mine.”

My Response: No, this isn’t so. The fact is that there is absolute love on the part of the Creator. He created us with all our desires and He wants to fulfill them without any condition. And it’s the same on our side. I want to use all my desires to fill Him. I want to give myself completely to bring Him contentment. Isn’t it love? This is complete bestowal.

Even though there is tremendous egoism in me, huge inner desires, terrible qualities, I actualize them precisely by using them to bestow, I rise above them in their realization in bestowal.

And it turns out that I rise above all these desires in complete love and surrender rather than calculating Western love, because the calculation is made only with my ego: What is the most it can be used for in order to bestow to the host? While the host uses my egoism to “feed” me as much as possible.

Question: But this ability must be acquired because it is not given so easily from birth. How do I achieve the ability to discern where to use this power or not, and how to use it?

Answer: The light that reforms, which comes from the Creator, reveals our inner selves to us in such a way that I begin to feel all my traits, qualities, strengths, thoughts, and desires. I begin to combine all the traits within myself so that each time Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, and Malchut would rise to Keter, Hochma, and Bina.

I begin to work inside myself, with my inner tools, and thus develop my soul. These are the parts of my soul. I work with them, literally, like with tweezers, use a little more of this, less of that, and figure out how I can apply myself in a different way to maximize bestowing to the Creator at each moment.

And gradually I get into a state where I fixate myself on Him. He becomes like my partner, He sets Himself up toward me, as I set myself toward Him.

I start strategizing how to achieve the maximum mutual realization in this circle of interactions, when He fully manifests Himself as a source of pleasure and I fully manifest myself as a source of receiving this pleasure in order to please Him by enjoying it.

That is, I practically convey to Him only my thought: the reason why I enjoy it. Physically, I receive all the fulfillment within myself.

What Is Behind The Images Of Our World?

231.02Zohar for All, Shemot, Item 81: It is written: “He took those arrows and lowered them to his nostrils. Blood came out of his nostrils, implying Dinim in red color.”

Question: How should we understand those phrases: “arrows,” “blood came out of his nostrils”?

Answer: Many of the terms in The Book of Zohar sound strange to us because behind all the images of the corporeal world stand upper forces, and we name them by names of our world.

Kabbalists took the earthy language to talk about the upper forces, their states, relationships, and combinations. They have no other way to describe the upper world because there are no words there. But forces descend from there to our world and we can take names from our world to describe the forces and properties of the spiritual world.

Therefore it is allegorically said “three arrows,” “nostrils,” and so on. And immediately there is a transition to another purely Kabbalistic language: HGT de Zeir Anpin. Thus, The Book of Zohar tells us about everything in a mixture because it wants to take you out of this world so that you enter the next depiction, the spiritual world.

It is as if it places before you two screens. You automatically look at the picture that depicts some images from our world. Yet in fact, you should try through them to penetrate inside and see the combination of two forces, the bestowing one (Israel) and the receiving one (Rome), and in what position they are with each other.

When a person recognizes them correctly, he becomes the third force between them.

“Israel” And “Rome”—Two Forces That Govern The World

937The Book of Zohar: He said, “There must be three rulers of peoples who are standing in the city of Rome in the land, since they extend from HGT de ZA, and they are destined to declare bad decrees over Israel by the Romans. In other words, the flaw that Israel blemished in HGT gave the Romans strength to destroy the Temple and declare bad decrees.“

The Zohar speaks allegorically of the two forces that govern the world. The power of bestowal is called “Israel” (Yisrael, Yashar-El)—straight to the Creator. These are the people, the forces directed to the Creator, and it does not matter who they are by nationality because all this comes from Ancient Babylon and applies absolutely to all of humanity.

And the forces that strive to fill their own egoism are called “Rome.” In principle, the entire current European and, in general, world civilization comes from Rome.

Throughout history, these two completely opposite forces were in a certain contact with each other, more or less in balance, completing each other. The stronger the force of attraction to the Creator, the weaker Rome, the egoistic force of the world, is. Not just our world and not just Western civilization but its egoistic component. The smaller this egoistic component is, the lower Rome falls, the higher Israel rises, in allegorical terms.

We are talking only about the inner state of man and in no way about our world. Nothing will change in our world because we are already in a state of final correction, which everyone must achieve.

It should be emphasized that Israel is not what we today mean by a certain nation of the world with its destiny, culture, and everything that is in it, which everyone knows about like about no other small nation.

The fact is that this nation is special. It was separated from all mankind in Ancient Babylon by its spiritual quality when Abraham started to recruit a Kabbalistic group from the ancient Babylonians and unite into one whole those people who felt the desire to reach the Creator. Therefore, he called this group Israel (Yashar-El), straight to the Creator. It has existed ever since.

For fifteen hundred years, before the destruction of the Second Temple, it existed on the spiritual level as it was created by Abraham. And now, for the last two millennia, it has been disconnected from everything spiritual and there is absolutely no understanding in it why it is called so because it does not feel and does not know its purpose.

Today, if we talk to the Jews, the descendants of the ancient Kabbalists from the group of Abraham, we will find that they do not understand their mission at all and do not know it. They just live, that is all.
