Who Am I After All?

laitman_610_2Question: If the Creator awakens desires, and thoughts grow from them, it turns out that desires and thoughts are not mine. Then who am I?

Answer: Nobody. You are the one who realizes that thoughts and desires, mind and heart flow through you. Nothing more.

How can a person have something of his own? The organism is born, it grows and develops. How can anything of his own emerge in a person? From what? From the influence of the outside world? He is an element of the outside world, and what he feels, what flows through him, depends on how the world affects him. Does it really belong to him? No, this is what passes through him.

This is our beastly life.

In fact, every human is really great, but he remains in a dormant, inactive state until he is awakened and opens his eyes. Until then, we live our lives; we come back again and again until our conscious participation is required.

All our listeners have a point in the heart, which at some moment appeared in them. They are no longer enacted just like robots. They were brought to hear, to begin to understand, to see the method, to become aware of the great system of the universe in which they exist, and how they can start to consciously and efficiently work in it by themselves.

From my perspective, these people are completely different from all the others; because in those that simply exist around us, the point in the heart is still asleep. In The Book of Zohar they are called “sleeping.” Their eyes are turned inward because they value only their egoism and nothing else. They cannot yet look outside to see everything through the quality of bestowal and love.

How Can We Receive Spiritual Information

laitman_276_02Question: I am the kind of person who needs examples, not explanations, for concepts that I don’t understand. If the wisdom of Kabbalah is a science, is it possible to give examples of the phenomena about which you speak?

Answer: How can I give you an example if you don’t see and don’t understand spiritual phenomena yet? You need new extra senses so that you will see what I see, then you will understand what I am talking about. This means that you need to expand your senses, and this is what the wisdom of Kabbalah engages in.

Only a person who becomes a Kabbalist, which means who receives spiritual information, can see this information though his insight and not with his eyes.

The Perception Of Reality: A Springboard To The Upper World

laitman_423_02Question: How is a person’s perception of reality built and organized?

Answer: A person’s perception of reality in our world is determined by our five corporeal senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. They correspond to the five spiritual senses: Keter, Hochma, Bina, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut that we feel when we begin to attain the upper world. Therefore, we need to develop these senses inside us in order to attain the upper world. This is fulfilled only if we ascend above our desire to receive.

In this desire, we seemingly feel the world that surrounds us, but since it is perceived inside us, we cannot say that we feel anything that surrounds us. It is simply reflected and appears this way in our current senses.

If I look at a table that is in front of me, for example, I perceive the way I see it. But if I had different senses, I would see it differently. This means that we actually don’t see what is external to us and there are only forces that are external to us and nothing else.

Just as a computer depicts a picture with vectors and electrons that we see on the screen and perceive as a certain reality, so is the world around us nothing more than different vectors that are connected in certain ways and thus depict certain pictures of reality inside us.

The problem with the corporeal perception of reality is that our senses don’t show us the full picture of the world. How can we begin to perceive the true reality that is external to us and is a physical field that is made of many different forces?

This is done by ascending above our egoistic desires. But what is actually wrong with them? Through them we perceive only what is perceived by them and nothing more than that. We do not exit the limits of our essence. Whatever is perceived by our corporeal senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch is what we feel.

We perceive more than 90% through our vision, 8% by our hearing, and very little through our touch, taste, and smell. Taste we feel only when eating. A person’s sense of smell is very limited although the cells that are responsible for that occupy a large space in the brain. And through touch sensations, we feel ourselves in space.

In any case, these five senses attain only what can go through them, be processed, and put together into a general picture of reality that is depicted to us. There are actually no people, no animals, no plants, and no inanimate nature external to us such as galaxies, stars, and planets. There are, however, many forces that impact our senses and depict this picture inside us.

Yet, if we ascend above our senses by using the method of the wisdom of Kabbalah, we will begin to perceive these forces that are external to us objectively and undisturbed by us. Moreover, it will be in a relatively objective manner since we will perceive them to the degree that we resemble the Creator, that is, not yet fully.

The full degree is called the Light of Infinity, when the forces are not disturbed by anything in any way and are not restricted. We cannot feel that at the moment because we feel the Light only to the degree of our partial resemblance to the upper field.

How can we resemble it in order to perceive it correctly? This is our problem. If we exit the level we are on, it will be clear to us where we truly are.

The wisdom of Kabbalah actually prepares a person to perceive the upper field. In order to feel it, you have to perform certain changes in yourself, to make efforts and ascend above the ego that locks you inside it, like a dwarf star that swallows itself to a degree that it doesn’t even let out any Light.

We have to exit this state to ascend above ourselves and begin to feel what is outside our ego. This means that I have to restrict it to stop perceiving everything only for my own sake and to try to perceive things for the sake of others.

At this point, I already begin to understand that I was intentionally created as an egoist in order to ascend above my nature. I live in a world that is made of myself and of many other people so that they will help me exit myself and perform certain work by caring for them more than for myself.

In this case, to the extent that I can ascend above myself, I perceive the space that surrounds me objectively: its intensity, size, and volume.

In order to enable me to encompass this space till the level of infinity, the ego keeps developing inside me. The moment I begin to exit myself, the ego begins to grow even more inside me so that I will ascend even higher above myself and thus get to know the upper field that surrounds me and everything it reveals to me.

What do these revelations mean? When I exit myself, I interact with the upper field and begin to actually realize its thought, its actions on me, and I try to resemble it, and thus I contact it. In practice this is called the unification of man with the Creator because the upper field is my Creator and not only mine but everyone else’s. In fact, I do not know who everyone else is. I begin to perceive them as my parts and to see my future development in an increasingly greater connection and unity with them.

At the same time the ego keeps growing and keeps trying to separate us, but the more we try to connect them, the more we attain the upper field. Inside it there are all the thoughts of the creation, everything that we need in order to enter the new dimension of the world, to ascend above all the limitations to the upper dimension, to a totally limitless space that is not disturbed by anything.

We need and can do this now! We have to attain the upper world while living in this world and to move on to it smoothly so that our world will totally cease to worry us. We will only feel it as a small springboard by which we jump and leap to the next dimension of our existence.

Thoughts And Mind

laitman_610_3Question: What are thoughts and mind?

Answer: Thoughts don’t exist by themselves. Thoughts are what happens in the mind. The mind is a derivative of desires. Our desires are a derivative of the desire of the Creator. The desire of the Creator is a derivative of His intention.

This precise chain is manifested in us in order to create desires. In this case, desires reveal thoughts, and thoughts weave the mind. Once a certain network of thoughts are formed within us and we can own and operate it, then we are able to evaluate our desires, the influences of the Creator, and try to connect our mind with His mind, and our desires with His desires.

Desires are primary, and the mind serves the desires. It turns out that the more desires a person has, the bigger his mind is that serves and satisfies them.

Question: Does it mean that highly egoistic people are smarter?

Answer: Elevated egoism means not large, but a versatile egoism. In this case, the human mind of a person is growing. Yet, if his egoism is large, but one-sided, his mind is very small and narrow.

Let’s say, I want to earn a billion dollars. Such egoism is one-sided. However, if I want to earn money, be a scientist, and know what the universe is, then my mind unfolds on all the desires. Therefore, it must be very versatile in order to be able to serve them.

Love Is The Fulfillment Of The Desires Of The Other

laitman_613Question: Where is the boundary between the spiritual and material worlds? How do we cross it? Does this boundary exist?

Answer: The boundary between the spiritual and material worlds is inside a person. We can consider and measure everything only relative to a person. Therefore, our attitude to the world and to life is very subjective; while I live, the universe shines.

But if I exit my egoism that psychologically is my nature and rise above it, I begin to feel the entire universe in a completely different sense. Because from the inside, I already see everything in the Light of bestowal, love, and altruism. My sensory organs perceive absolutely different characteristics and values, and therefore, the world looks completely different to me.

Question: Why is this called love?

Answer: Because I want to do good to my neighbor. I don’t know what is called love in our world, but in the wisdom of Kabbalah, love refers to such an attitude to the neighbor when you want to fulfill any of his desires. To do what he wants means to love him.

By feeling the neighbor as yourself, you reach your final correction and exit the framework of our world into the framework of the next world, the next degree of attainment and cognition.

Comment: There is an interesting phenomenon in physics that is called synergy, when the system is not equal to the sum of its subsystems. This, to some extent, is reminiscent of what Kabbalah says about the amazing connection, when people, through their unity, begin to feel like one single whole, which no longer divides into separate particles.

My Comment: The collective is much bigger than the sum of its parts.

What Is The Collective Mind?

laitman_281_01Question: What is the collective mind from the point of view of the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: It cannot be that the mind is not collective because we are in a system of mutual connection called “Adam.” This system includes all of our states within it that are called “worlds.”

Therefore, the mind is a sum of wandering signals that fill the system of connection between separate elements, people, or souls.

Of course, there is something that is revealed to the souls and that which is not yet revealed. Therefore, we can talk about the subconscious since there are four levels of revelation in each one of us and only the last level gives us the full and conscious existence, meaning that all the previous levels are found in the subconscious level.

If they come from us, then we can manage them; if they come from above, then we practically don’t feel them. But there is a possibility to foresee them. This is not fortune telling, but some prescience, some actions that cause the appearance of reason, that give us an idea of the inner mind (subconscious).

Question: In our world, most of a person’s states pass unconsciously. The reality that we perceive consciously constitutes a tiny part, a few percent. How is it in spirituality?

Answer: In the spiritual world, everything happens relative to a person who consciously summons his states: previous ones, those that are happening now, and those that will follow. In each of them is a part of the person himself, meaning a part of the creature and a part of the Creator. He determines our states in cooperation with us. By definition, He could be first, and maybe the second. But if we seriously comprehend all of our states, we will then begin to determine and define the Creator as the root cause.

Perception Of The Kabbalist

laitman_751_2Question: Quantum physicists have established that electrons behave either as waves or as particles. When we observe them, they behave like particles of matter.

Answer: Scientists say that there is no matter as such, but there are only waves that manifest as matter relative to us.

Question: It turns out that if I look at the ten through my egoism, then I see ten bodies. If I look at them through eyes that aren’t influenced by egoism, I would see some kind of energy, some kind of force, instead of the bodies. Is this how the Kabbalist perceives everything?

Answer: The Kabbalist within his egoism sees everything the same way all other people do. But by rising above the ego, he begins to see forces, desires.

How Does The Environment Shape Reality?

laitman_942Question: You say that inclusion into others will change the perception of reality. How will it happen?

Answer: We constantly talk about this in our daily lessons.

In order to sense the upper world we need to build a sensory organ, in other words, a vessel of reception.

We must build this vessel from the egoistic desires of the ten (ten people) so that it becomes a sum of all our good qualities that are directed toward bestowal and love.

To do this, we must rise above ourselves, correctly interacting with each other in order to connect our ten points in the heart.

If we succeed, we will turn into the quality of bestowal and love and will become an instrument for reception.

Then all the Upper Light that is around will fill us. This upper field will be called the Creator.

Therefore, we need to build a vessel of the soul into which the Light of the soul enters.

Consciousness: Beyond Time And Space

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: One of the main laws of nature is the law of conservation of energy. If nothing disappears, then presumably we also do not disappear. What happens to our consciousness when we die?

Answer: In nature, nothing disappears but passes from one state to another. There is no such concept as “disappear.” Therefore, consciousness passes from one form to another, from one carrier to another—if it exists within us at all!

It can be said that consciousness doesn’t exist within a person, that it is around him, or maybe even in a completely different dimension, in another space. Our brain is kind of a modem that picks up the general consciousness to the extent that it needs to realize itself at the moment.

Question: There is a collective consciousness, and there is an individual consciousness of each person, that which I pick up from the collective consciousness. It turns out that individual consciousness continues to live on?

Answer: Yes. Nothing disappears. It only changes its structure, design, just as our body decomposes into basic elements.

Remark: I would really like to remember my own self.

Answer: Your “I” exists in the consciousness, not in the physical body. Consciousness per se is information. Informational connection exists beyond time and field. It permeates the entire universe.

Information does not disappear, it can only change its medium. And we can not say for sure in what form and where it exists. This is the way wisdom of Kabbalah views it.

Remark: I support the idea that consciousness is a global phenomenon. Therefore, the individual consciousness is like a small holographic copy that picks up certain things from the collective consciousness. In this case they are truly connected. However, physics does not yet discuss what happens after death.

Answer: The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches that nothing else exists. Our bodies and the whole corporeal world are only an illusion. This world is called “an illusory world” and is considered nonexistent. Everything else exists in the consciousness.

Harmony Of The Higher Reality

laitman_572_02Question: Can you describe the true reality that I can yearn for, imagine, and understand, unlike the reality in which I am now living?

Answer: When I began the spiritual path, I tried to do this and it seemed to me that I was more successful at it than today.

I cannot describe the higher reality. It is a field of bestowal, love, total integration, and complete adhesion. It is a field in which there is a general intelligence, collective characteristics, and collective activities that complement each other, connecting into a single whole. It is a harmony.

We feel it as a higher pleasure, which is built upon the discovery of opposites and the complete harmony between them.
