The Power of Childish Thinking 

One of the most tenacious myths about how Einstein discovered is that he relied on adopting a naive, simple mode of thinking. This mode authorized Einstein to discount and ignore all the difficult technicalities of the existing literature, whose distracting complexities, we are to suppose, block progress. The way ahead is to adopt the mode of a precocious child asking childish questions. Einstein himself seems to have advanced this myth in part through self-deprecating remarks. Here is how one such remark is related, third-hand, by one of Einstein’s biographers: One of Einstein’s typical remarks was reported to me from Falmouth, Massachusetts by James Franck … 

‘‘When I asked myself,’’ Einstein said to Franck, ‘‘how it happened that I in particular discovered the relativity theory, it seemed to lie in the following circumstance. The normal adult never bothers his head about space-time problems. Everything there is to be thought about it, in his opinion, has already been done in early childhood. I, on the contrary, developed so slowly that I only began to wonder about space and time when I was already grown up. In consequence I probed deeper into the problem than an ordinary child would have done (John D. Norton, How Einstein Did Not Discover).

This is correct. You don’t have to make yourself ignorant, you have to be naive.

Question: How do you erase knowledge that already exists in you? The knowledge exists and somehow I have to take it and remove it in this moment, as if I don’t know?

Answer: I don’t know anything. Actually! I say this absolutely frankly. I feel empty anew every minute.

Question: Why? You have been studying the science of Kabbalah for 40 years.

Answer: This is such a science that it denies itself. It crosses out everything you knew before so that you can take the next step. But the next step is not after the previous one, but instead of the previous one. They don’t add up together. In the spiritual, everything is built on denial.

Question: So I go and go, I am at some stage, and suddenly it completely disappears?

Question: The 9^th of Av is considered a national day of mourning for the Jewish people. On the 9^th of Av, the First and Second Temples were destroyed, the Inquisition began, and they were expelled from Spain, which the Jews considered their home. On the 9^th of Av, the slaughter of Jews by Bohdan Khmelnytsky began. On this day in 1914, the First World War began, and with this it touched the whole world.

Today how relevant is this date the 9^th of Av?

Answer: This date is like a root. The spiritual root of the manifestation of evil in the world, but primarily in relation to the Jewish people.

Answer: Of course, there should be! Yes, indeed! After all, our problem is that we generally deny any obligation on the Jews in this world. This is a problem! This problem has been going on since the exodus from Egypt and receiving the Torah.

It is necessary to fulfill it! To fulfill it so that the rest of the nations of the world will come to its fulfillment too.

And the fulfillment does not consist in performing some mechanical movements, but in loving your neighbor as yourself. That’s what’s missing.

Everyone once heard that “love your neighbor as yourself” is the main testament of the Torah, but no one thinks that it is mandatory for everyone in the whole world to fulfill it. For whom is it an obligation?

For the whole world, this is a kind of voluntary, non-coercive offer. And for the Jewish people, this is compulsory. We have pledged ourselves, we received a property, a connection with the upper force that will correct us for this in accordance with our wishes, our requests. And we don’t demand it. That’s it; it all went astray from there.

Question: Please tell me. After the First and Second Temples were built we were moving toward love for our neighbor. Why was it necessary for the 9th of Av to appear and for these Temples to be destroyed?

Answer: In order for us to start correcting them. Because the construction was going on from above. We were given a power that somehow united us.

Question: So two Temples were built from above?

Answer: Of course. The force comes from above, not from us, from ourselves.

And the Third Temple, we must still realize how necessary it is and demand it ourselves from below.

Question: Will the Third Temple be built by the whole world?

Answer: It will be built in the hearts of those who strive for the Creator. They are called the people of Israel. And then it will be taken up by the whole world.

Question: And how can we guide a person to empathize with the global situation, the world?

Answer: We do not have this feeling at all! Let’s say, animals die: there is flooding and forests burning, they run away across the river and drown. We look at it as a catastrophe, that is, purely through reason, philosophically, but we cannot empathize.

In the News (New York Post): “A 16-year-old girl killed herself after sharing an Instagram poll asking followers whether she should die — and 69 percent of them said she should, reports said.”

My Response: Many people would kill themselves if they could do so easily by taking a pill, falling asleep, and that’s it. Why suffer? This life is miserable if one doesn’t find a filling in it, elation, the attainment of a certain dream, and we all die someday anyway.

But society does the right thing by not letting this inclination grow. We need to “choose life” as it says in the Torah, but this must be chosen.  And in order to do so, we need to try, strive, and seek.

The wisdom of Kabbalah offers us a way to do so, but a person needs to reach it and to find perfect eternal life in it.

Question: What is the goal of the upper management in bringing a person to such a point?

Answer: Its goal is that a person will find out that there is a meaning to life. Not the one he lives in. At the moment he lives a beastly life, and he has to ascend to the next level.

Question: Are you in favor of enticing a person by pleasures or pushing him from behind by suffering?

Answer: I am in favor of attracting a person with pleasures.

Question: Does this mean to show him that this world is worth living for?

Answer: The upper world. Of course.

Question: The world above egoism, as you say all the time.

Answer: Yes, indeed. This is exactly what is worth living for. A person will then find himself in constant motion, in self-development. It is a totally different world, a totally different feeling. A person will see how something in him changes from day to day, upward, downward, whichever direction, but he will be in internal motion and in expectation.

He will be in a state of revealing the upper state, which means the perfect eternal world. He exits his beastly body with his emotions, attainments and knowledge, and begins to feel the higher state.

Question: Do I cease to feel sickness, fears, and sufferings of this world with this feeling of harmony and balance with nature? Do I exit all that or not?

Answer: There are illnesses that you cannot stop feeling because they belong to your beastly state. There are sensations that you feel from time to time, but they belong to a psychological state. Yet, you are already guided by a totally different attitude to your existence, to the world.

Question: Is the change of attitude the main thing?

Answer: Of course! This is the most important thing for a person. A person exists in spirit!

Question: The culture of “tang ping,” a passive lifestyle without stress and careerism, is gaining popularity among Chinese youth.
“Tang ping” means “lie down and switch off.” This is a salvation from the pressure of society, which pushes young people to look for work, to work hard and to build a career, as is customary in China.

The term “tan ping” was used by the author of a post who wrote that he has not worked for the last two years and does not see this as a problem. Instead of chasing success, he decided to just “lie down.”

Do you say that this is not always bad?

Answer: This is not bad. It is best to realize—What exactly do you want? For what? Why? And only after that, if it is really worth it for you and the world—so that you do not burn fuel, so that you do not pollute the air—carefully calculate what the meaning is of your work. Do you harm the environment, including still, vegetative, animate, and human nature, society, and so on?

Comment: I recently saw a photograph of a prescription given to an elderly woman by a doctor on the Internet. For the past year, she has maintained a distance of six feet from others, even with family members, as recommended. She got vaccinated and still continued to follow these rules. She did not even come close to her beloved granddaughter who was born sickly, and whom she had cared for. It was very difficult for her, but she was more afraid for her loved ones, not for herself.

My Response: Naturally. That person deprived herself of powerful sensations. It is impossible to live like this. She was already killing herself with this relationship with others.

Answer: This is a great power. If a person is deprived of the feeling of love, even animals—we know this from animals; they perceive it very clearly—it turns their whole life upside down. Nothing can be done, we must love each other.

Comment: In general, this woman could communicate with her granddaughter at a distance, but this was not enough for her. She needed just physical contact—to hug her granddaughter.

My Response: That’s the best. Let the robots run us.

Question: Indeed, the less competent, the more corrupt, the more robots and artificial intelligence they want. Install a chip, replace the oil, add some more, and that’s it. How do you like this idea, seriously?

Answer: I am in favor. Replace the corrupt so-called people’s representatives with a machine: I am for it.

My Response: Imagine a state of clarity and joy. And try to create it. Not based on your past state but just out of the blue.

Question: Just create happiness out of nowhere? Is it possible?

Answer: If it is not possible, then why do we exist? And if it is possible, then only in that way. You cannot create happiness out of misery. Out of misery, you only have to understand that you need to achieve happiness.

Question: So you are saying that only the effort to achieve happiness is required of us? We need to build this happy state and try to achieve it?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Utopians once aspired to this. What is the difference between what you propose and those utopians and The City of the Sun?

Answer: Utopians did not rely on the real nature we are in, on the egoism we exist in. They believed that they can just take it, pick it up, and simply want to do it.

Question: Just take and place a person in The City of the Sun?

Answer: And you must build this city of the Sun yourself! It does not grow out of our fantasies.

Question: When you say that you need to imagine happiness, what stages do you need to go through?

Answer: I mean that we must realize through standing on all the sufferings there are and relying on them, that we can do something opposite to them only if we change our relationship to each other. And so we need to start looking into our upbringing—personal, social, group, family—at all levels.

Question: And this is what you call building a happy society?

Answer: Of course. It depends only on the attitude of people toward each other. Nothing more.

Question: To sum it up: you say that if I am now suffering, in pain, at a dead end, then to get out of it I need to imagine, visualize…?

Answer: The opposite state. The reason for suffering is in my “I,” in the fact that we are opposite to each other, we hate, dislike, repel, and want to profit from each other. If we want happiness, we must free ourselves from self-interest and raise public interest instead.

I must wish happiness for everyone and then I will also exist in all this happiness.
