How Can You Correctly Understand the “Introduction of the Book of Zohar”?

137The letter Shin entered before Him. She said to Him, “O Lord of the world, it is good for You to create the world with me, for in me is Your name, Shadai, called, and it is becoming to create the world with a holy name.” He said to her, “You are comely, you are good, and you are true. But because the letters SheKeR [Shin-Kof-Reish, meaning “lie” or “falsehood”] took you to be with them, I do not wish to create the world with you, for there will not be falsehood unless the letters Kof and Reish take you (Zohar for All, “Introduction of the Book of Zohar,”“The Letters of Rav Hamnuna Saba,” Item 24).

Question: The article “The Letters of Rav Hamnuna Saba” describes how each letter entered before the Creator and spoke about its virtues, and He replied that there were negative forces in it, and therefore He would not create the world with it.

How can we understand this text correctly? I want to connect it with me. Where is it in me? What will it give me if I read it now?

Answer: I do not think it is going to give you anything special. But you will begin to feel that something in you is beginning to move, to act inside of you.

Even if you do not understand anything, nonetheless, putting your efforts into reading and trying to understand, absorb, swallow, and somehow digest this text (although you will not be able to do this of course), will help you reach some new state. After all, the reading itself, the letters themselves, and their appearance will affect you.

Question: Even if I read just out of curiosity because I am interested in the style of writing, since they wrote it 2,000 years ago and everything is presented in an entertaining dramatic form, will it affect me?

Answer: It will still affect you. I advise anyone who can to read it, in any language. Everyone will be able to feel for themselves how it affects them. Calmly, slowly, just read from the beginning to the end the “Introduction of The Book of Zohar.

Unity that We Attain Through the Letter “Aleph”

629.3The Creator told her, “Although the world was created with the letter Bet, you will be the head of all the letters, for there is no unification in Me, except in you. In you will all calculations begin, all the works of the people of the world, and the whole unification is only in the letter Aleph” (Zohar for All, Introduction of the Book of Zohar,” “The Letters of Rav Hamnuna Saba,” Item 38)

Question: Can you explain what unity we are talking about?

Answer: The letter “Aleph – א” opens a series of signs with which the Creator depicts the universe, the forces acting in it, and the connection between them from beginning to end.

Therefore, the letter “Aleph” has a very complex structure in its image: the upper world and the lower world, separated by a border called Parsa.

Only in this case is it possible to imagine a system that really consists of two worlds, is controlled from above by a single force, and brings the entire system and all worlds to a single form.

Letters—Carriers of Spiritual Forces

193Question: In principle, does each Hebrew letter have its own specific form that depicts the manifestation of upper forces in matter?

Answer: Yes, there are only a few forces, qualities, that form letters in a certain combination with each other and these combinations, as if stamp their altruistic qualities on the substrate of our world, on the egoistic desire.

Question: How can this affect a person? For example, if I look at the outlines of letters depicting some spiritual forces, and I do not understand what this is about, do they nevertheless somehow affect me?

Answer: Yes. Absolutely. Let’s say a person is like some small animal. But if he works with these letters, if he tries to find something in them, to depict, to understand, and to read, then with their help he gradually approaches the great knowledge of nature.

By his desire to understand what this is about, he, as if, summons all these forces upon himself, and they begin to change him from within, to give him some kind of awareness.

The Role of the Creator

610.2Question: Everything in the universe has a certain role. What is the role of the force called the Creator?

Answer: The role of the Creator is unequivocal; it is to constantly educate the creation created by Him so that it comes to perfection.

The upper force is everything. It includes the force of desire, will, knowledge, and decision. Everything that exists in nature at all is just the single upper force.

The desire to enjoy is created within it. This single, great force of the field works on the point of the desire that develops under its influence and becomes equal to the force of the field. The desire as if swells to the size of the field, then bursts, collapses into many parts, and then begins to work on itself in order to gather together.

Gradually, it gathers into that single new whole that fits into the same field. The Creator and the creation like two flatbreads stick together and penetrate each other by diffusion.

Although they are different in their original nature, they have come to a state where they are absolutely similar to each other in the quality that now comes from them—the quality of bestowal and love. For the Creator it is primary, for the creation it is secondary, acquired.

“God Has Made Them One Opposite the Other”

243.07It is known that God has made them one opposite the other. Opposite each force in Kedusha [holiness], the Creator made an equal force in the Sitra Achra, opposite from the Kedusha (Zohar for All, Introduction of The Book of Zohar, The Letters of Rav Hamnuna Saba, Item 23).

Question: What is the purpose of creating the world? Why do we need two opposing forces?

Answer: Two opposite forces are necessary to create something. Nothing can be created with the help of one force. This is natural. We see it also in our world.

The point is that when the Creator wished to create a world, that is, to create a place where His creatures can reside, He had to accordingly transfer to this world the qualities in which these creatures can exist, multiply, develop, and reach a certain upper state.

Frozen Language

137Every letter in Hebrew is a symbol of some state that always includes the property of bestowal, the property of receiving, and their combination.

For nearly 6,000 years from the appearance  of Hebrew, there have been no changes in it. The writing and grammar have remained absolutely the same. They do not change because the spiritual world from which everything comes does not change.

This is a frozen language because its origin does not lie in our world. Our world is constantly changing, but the spiritual world is not.

However, during the many years since the appearance of Hebrew, people have changed significantly. Had we met a person from the far past, say Moses or Abraham, and they started talking with us, we would have a hard time understanding their oral speech. However, we can easily read written texts.

They are written in the same way as modern ones, with even more precision, since for the last hundred years of its usage on a daily basis spoken Hebrew has been terribly distorted. However, this does not change anything in the Kabbalistic sources.

Written Hebrew – Expression of Feelings

151Question: To what level can a written Kabbalistic text be attributed?

Answer: There are four types of expression of feelings in a Hebrew text: letters, signs above and below letters, inside letters, and musical signs.

There is no understanding of the text in and of itself in Hebrew. At the bottom of the words there must be vowel signs (Nekudot), meaning the light that comes from the letters. There must necessarily be Taamim, the light that enters the letter. And there must be musical signs, known as Tagin, which are crowns and all kinds of melodious sounds.

You cannot read a word just like that, because it is 100% regulated in its connection in the sentence.

Therefore in Hebrew neither periods nor commas are needed. There is none of this. But with the help of the correct intonation, everything that is needed is conveyed.

That is, there is a whole swarm of signs around the letter. In this way, from letter to letter, by transfusion of information, the feeling of the upper world is transmitted from person to person. This is why the text is so multi-layered.

Each word, symbol, and letter is very capacious. You read the text and feel what part of the letter is combined with another letter, with a third one, through a letter, and all sorts of permutations and combinatorics.

Moreover this is not just a word consisting of individual letters or an arbitrary grammar. If there are any letters here, then they must necessarily be repeated through some place, in some sequence, because the lights exit and enter these symbols. After all, every word means some kind of spiritual state.

Kabbalah Is the Natural State of Man

962.2Comment: There is a certain contradiction in the explanation of Kabbalah and in its implementation. Let us say that when there is an explanation of Kabbalah, everything seems to sound fine. And when it comes to some processes, I have seen people react and say: “We respect Michael Laitman a lot, but we cannot see what’s happening on the screen.” It’s like people go into a trance.

My Response: What can you do? If you look at Hasidism, at Christianity, at Islam, or any other customs and techniques of meditation, you can see the same thing. A person falls into a trance, enters some kind of sensory state and stays in it.

But there is very little of this in Kabbalah. In Kabbalah, all this is clearly controlled. Each step-by-step state is described discretely, with informational data, the so-called Reshimot, with the transformation of analog sensations into digital ones, in the form of a clear determination of the weighting of states such as Partzufim, that is, steps. Kabbalah describes feelings in physical terms, because they cannot be described by anything else.

For a person who does not yet understand us, it is not clear what Kabbalah deals with: feelings or science? And Kabbalah is the science of feelings.

Kabbalah is the natural state of a person when he enters into an ever greater sense of his nature and the nature of the surrounding society, and discovers between himself and society some kind of force that changes him all the time.

Why Has the Pronunciation of Hebrew Changed?

962.1Over the years since the appearance of the Hebrew language, its writing and grammar have remained unchanged. But the sounds have undergone various changes, as has its pronunciation since it depends on the person in our world.

The real pronunciation, which consists of guttural, whistling, and hissing sounds, has been lost by us. Today we practically do not produce, express, and understand the five types of sounds: palatal, dental, throat, labial, and cheek.

And they are very important. The same sound uttered by teeth, lips, cheeks, palate, or throat has a completely different meaning depending on which of the five parts of the soul it belongs to: Keter, Hochma, Bina, Zair Anpin, Malchut.

It all depends on how we exhale air, how we pump it through the throat. After all, the throat is a combination of Malchut and Bina.

When Bina descends from the head (Rosh) into the body (Guf), a throat is formed at the intersection of the human and animal levels, and huge changes occur there, which are the combinations of the qualities of Malchut and Bina. That’s why we don’t use any of it all.

I Am the Soul!

226The wisdom of Kabbalah explains those spheres in which we are not yet in our sensations. It tells us in advance what we should come to. The greater the force of bestowal and love for the other you acquire, the higher is the sphere to which you will rise, and you will feel more and more comfortable, eternal, infinite, and perfect.

Kabbalah explains how the system of the universe is arranged. In principle, it is arranged very simply, on the combination of only two forces—reception and bestowal. But since this system is not revealed to each one individually and I do not feel that I have some kind of force of bestowal or reception, I do not contact them and do not operate with them, so it is difficult for me.

For the individual this is purely speculative. But if you take psychology, it will also begin to explain such things to you. In principle it explains to you about you, but you do not discover it in yourself, and therefore everything seems very complicated to you.

Kabbalah is the closest science to us. It speaks about our soul. What could be closer? The human body is a temporary piece of flesh. You can transplant organs from one person to another and do whatever you want with it.

The soul, however, is mine constantly, forever. I identify with it. I am the soul and not the body. Everything in the body can be changed; everything can be replaced except the soul.
