From my column in Ynet: “Is There a Future for Capitalism?” 

In Europe and in the United States, extreme right-wing movements are becoming stronger, in Asia fundamentalist Islam is growing, Nazism is permeating Russia. Besides that, millions of people are out of work, this trend continues to become stronger, and the world is heading toward war. How far will the world deteriorate? Rav Laitman answers in the spirit of the wisdom of Kabbalah

As a last convulsion before the death of the capitalism of today, it is flourishing and prospering, but underneath the surface, it is dying. The writing is already on the wall: purchasing power and sales capacity are fading, social mobility is frozen, technology is led by robotics, nanotechnology, and three-dimensional printers take over the job market, and the most distinct sign of all is rising unemployment. The UN’s International Labour Organization estimates that world unemployment will grow to at least another 11 million people in the next three years—and this is without considering the data on hidden unemployment and the unemployment of youth throughout the world, which is breaking new records and distort the measurement method.

It is clear that a lack of jobs accompanied by low wages will increase inequality, which is liable to force many of the young to postpone establishing a family unit, buying a home, and raising children and will encourage migration to developed nations. The economic downturn will necessarily cause the spread of the epidemic of depression and an increase in drug use and could lead to hundreds of thousands going out to the streets demanding social justice—a global trend that is growing before us.

In a world that is continuing to change and is in economic uncertainty, the question can be asked: Is it possible to prevent mass exodus to huge violent protests? Who will provide work for the millions of unemployed? And where is the world economy deteriorating to?

Capitalism’s Swan Song

The fundamental assumption of economics is that people aspire to maximal benefit with minimal investment (the assumption of rational expectations) with egoistic motives. Yet people who make a living off each other cannot exist separately from the other individuals in society. Throughout history, human development reflects the development of connections and interdependence between people. Which is to say, economics is just a copy of the system of connections and relationships between us.

According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, these relationships between people are a deeper expression of the egoistic nature of humanity—the desire to receive maximal pleasure and enjoyment even if they are at the expense of others. The egoistic nature began to grow even in the days of the ancient kingdom of Babylon around 3,500 years ago. So the foundations for the methods of trade and the use of money and taxation were laid down for the first time, modern agriculture began to take shape, and alongside them the methods for governance and control and classical processes of order and management were founded for the first time. Civilization, which had been conducted as a single family, was overthrown in an instant. The ego, which drove the Babylonians to develop, transformed them into being more self-centered and separated them. Social changes gave birth to class disparity among the populace and the phenomenon of exploitation of others began.

That created periods of slavery and feudalism one after the other, based on farming, and it split society into two classes in the Middle Ages, the prominent nobles and the serfs. The egoistic nature intensified the search for twisted ways of profiting more, and people began to develop new measures that brought far-reaching changes, known as the Industrial Revolution.

On the eve of the revolution, at the end of the 18^th century in England, the steam engine was invented. For industry, this was a springboard into the modern world. Mechanization and industrialization continued to develop at a dizzying rate and caused the masses to leave their pastoral villages and move to the big cities in England, France, and later, the United States—cities that developed around modern industry.

Marx’s Mistake

The Industrial Revolution gradually changed the nature of society. It led to the development of two new urban classes: The bourgeoisie—the financiers, who were leaders of enterprises, banks, and commerce, and the working class (the proletariat)—simple peasants who came to the city without any education, worked hard for the wealthy and suffered alienating and exploitative employment conditions.

Karl Marx, the father of the doctrine of Socialism, who was exposed to this phenomenon firsthand, described it this way: “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.

“Freeman and slave, patrician and plebeian, lord and serf, guild-master and journeyman, in a word, oppressor and oppressed, stood in constant opposition to one another, carried on an uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight, a fight that each time ended, either in a revolutionary reconstitution of society at large, or in the common ruin of the contending classes” (The Communist Manifesto).

The process of the development of egoism did not stop, and in the middle of the 19^th century it reached the peak of its prosperity and was wearing a new socioeconomic name of capitalism. The Capitalists demanded their own private property and free-market trade. They placed the individual at the center and formed a liberal position to justify their higher status. Their claim that when their income increased and their taxes were lowered, wealth would trickle down and provide benefit for the less established strata, has become a fiction. Marx believed that when the generation of working masses would understand that their situation was very bad, they would join together, make a violent revolution against the bourgeois regime, and bring a new egalitarian society. But he was mistaken about this turning point….

A hundred years ago, Baal HaSulam wrote that, “However, in this last point, where he promises us that after the ruin of the current bourgeois government, a proletariat government will immediately be instated, here is the flaw in his method: The new reality before us denies it. He thought that the proletariat governance would be the subsequent step to the bourgeois governance, and hence determined that by negating the bourgeois government, a proletariat one would be established instantly. Yet, reality proves that the step following the ruin of the present government is that of Nazis or Fascists. Evidently, we are still in the middle stages of human development. Humanity has not yet reached the highest level of the ladder of evolution. Who can assume how many rivers of blood are yet to be shed before humankind reaches the desired level?” (Baal HaSulam, the newspaper, The Nation).

The negative force of the egoistic nature is operating as usual, and if we don’t rein it in, it will lead us into uniting in Neo-Nazi and Fascist movements, a trend that is taking place these days in Europe and the United States. While the economy helps us live, it is not life itself. We must see how we build a new society according to the process of development through which humanity is moving, and as society changes—the economy changes.

While economists and policymakers think about how to reverse the cycle and return capitalism to its golden age, we learn from the wisdom of Kabbalah that this is something that is impossible. Capitalism made its own laws, and the laws of nature are advancing us toward a new socioeconomic model, and it is good that this is so.

A New Human Industry

There is increasing interest in the model of universal income, through which a country pays every citizen a basic subsistence allowance without any connection to his employment status; the detachment of payment from labor, is not accidental. It reflects stuttering attempts to prepare for an era in which there will be no work, but provision will be in abundance thanks to advanced robotics. But the failure of a national referendum to assure an income in Switzerland in the beginning of the year and the opposition to the new model throughout the world reflects a lack of maturity or even a denial of the fact that the entire labor market is standing before dramatic changes that are liable to undercut the entire social-political-economic order, and it is incumbent upon us to prepare in advance to avoid shocks and much human suffering.

How do we do this? Just as today, we are all the product of a formal and informal educational system, that through lectures and the memorization of principles prepare us for life in a capitalistic system, so much so that it seems natural to us. So we just have to adjust the relationships between us, which are the basis for every economic system, to the new reality and the challenges of the 21^st century. Such adjustment can be carried out only by means of mass education. The public-school system was established with the rise of the Industrial Revolution in the 19^th century in order to train workers to work in factory assembly lines. So it is precisely up to us to generate an unprecedented educational revolution in the 21^st century, toward the formation of the new society.

Imagine that every morning we will go out to the workplace where we worked in the past or to a community center close to our homes, and throughout the entire day we sit around a roundtable learning about the global world and human nature and discuss how to strengthen positive relationships between us. The positive power of connection that is created and stabilized between us will balance the negative force of egoism and will provide every person with a life, emotionally and psychologically, in the form of happiness, joy, serenity, and peace. “social unity…can be the source of every joy and success” is what Baal HaSulam wrote in the article, “The Freedom.”

With the help of promoting an ideology calling for unity, we put an end to the problem of increasing unemployment: many workplaces will be created, as I have specified here at length, whose entire purpose will be to generate the power of positive connection. The citizens will not be concerned at all about food, clothing, health, education, housing, cars, entertainment, or any additional social services. The nation will become a big family community; the problems of nationalism and privacy will gradually be solved, and the power of connection will heal the dying human society to its complete recovery. The new social economy will finally release us from the constant concern about making a living, engaging in excessive materialism, and will free our time for personal, social, and spiritual development.

In the News (World Economic Forum): “We are seeing an era of unprecedented change in the way we work. Rapid advancements in the fields of technology, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, and in how we create things, such as robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and biotechnology, will dramatically change the characteristics of the global workforce. …

“According to the Forum’s Future of Jobs report, some jobs will be wiped out, others will be in high demand, but all in all, around 5 million jobs will be lost.

“Already jobs exist now that had never been heard of five years ago: the role of data scientist, which is in huge demand, is one example.

My Comment: The statistics are softening the situation too much. In fact, there will be no need for a workforce at all; at the present time, robotics are being artificially reined in. For example, it would be possible to replace taxis with automatic automobiles. It is absolutely possible to do this.

A robot could replace every person and engage in everything except spiritual work because a robot has no freedom of choice.

Freedom of choice is the possibility of connecting to the next level of consciousness. Only a human can have freedom of choice, only in a particular environment in which a person is educated and prepared for passage to a new level called Adam (Man).

Everything else is on the animate level. So it can be programmed and make life easy mechanically. It is all mechanical.

Question: Will robots push us to the next level?

Answer: Certainly, but in the meantime we don’t want this so we don’t use them.

There are areas in our lives where we would benefit if a person were replaced by a robot, but there is always a negative effect to this as well. For example, if we replace taxi drivers with robots, what will happen to the millions of people who are engaged in this profession?

We need to find out: what should a person do?

We can make our physical lives easier by inventing mechanical “toys,” but at the same time, our lives will become emptier because there would be no intellectual output.

In Disney World in Orlando there is a huge sphere attraction. You sit in a car and ride through the sphere and view their presentation of the future of humanity: everyone flying in helicopters, racing somewhere, at home, everything operates mechanically with the push of a button. And what is it for? After all, a person somehow remains the same.

So we would have completed our existence if it were not for the program of human development activated from above.

Therefore, we have to reach a state that will be very bad for us, and we must understand that the meaning of our development is to unite and to rise to the next level of existence through unity.

The next level is spirituality, outside of the body, outside of all limitations in our world. Let’s hope people will understand this.

“Meanwhile, between 2009 and 2013, the number of Europeans living without enough money to heat their homes or cope with unforeseen expenses, a state known as ‘severe material deprivation,’ rose by 7.5 million to 50 million people. These are among the 123 million people—almost a quarter of the European Union’s population—at risk of living in poverty. …

“Poverty in the EU is not an issue of scarcity during the crisis, but a problem of how wealth is distributed,” said Isabel Ortiz, director of social protection at the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO), in her introduction to the Oxfam report.”

(VestiFinance): “Faced with growing inequalities and unemployment above 10%, Europe plans to introduce a single base income, which guarantees to all people, regardless of work, the ability to meet basic needs, says Christopher Dembik. …

“In 2016, France will also address the issue of providing basic income throughout the population and limiting the maximum wage to cope with inequality and to achieve more balanced growth.

“In a more egalitarian society with other values, the demand for luxury goods fell sharply. Consumers now choose mass produced products and high technology. The fall in demand in Europe and the economic slowdown in developing countries, particularly in China, led to a collapse in the luxury segment.”

My Comment: Gradually, the uniform provision of the basic necessities to the entire population is emerging, as Baal HaSulam wrote about in the beginning of the last century.

He was criticized for saying this and accused of being a communist. But today, all of Europe is beginning to introduce a system of providing the population with necessities. It could be that even without a great war, but through a continuation of the crisis, people will become wiser and life will force us to redesign society and ourselves.

My Comment: This situation is leading us to the need to connect and integrate in the new system, meaning to become like it: united. Nature is teaching us that human society must integrate with nature to become one single system.

There is no point wasting energy trying to fix the US economy because it is impossible to bring back factories that were moved to China thirty years ago. There is no need for them for America or for the world. At present, China already has moved those factories to India.

Americans must start producing a new type of commodity, the only special products that are required worldwide, namely to produce people. This production is due to the fact that unemployed people will get jobs: they will start learning to unite.

After few months of such studies, each one will receive strong new impressions regarding what a correct “human” and a correct human society are. We need to continue this way. After all, a person has nothing else to do in this life other than generate an upper force, the most powerful force in the world that is capable of performing miracles in all of nature. All of this depends only on the connection between people.

Therefore, we shouldn’t think that this production doesn’t produce goods. We will generate a product and will be able to measure the force produced by us, the power of the connection we received and the success achieved through it that will increase day by day.

We can evaluate them according to the level of the desire, connection, restriction, and Masach (screen). These characteristics are much more accurate than our current economy with its methods of assessing work: efforts invested and results received.

There is no doubt that in this way we will achieve unlimited development. We just need to explain it to people, and, first of all, to leaders such as Trump.

There is no alternative because it is estimated that around seventy to eighty percent of the working population will be out of work in the next few years, no matter how hard we resist the introduction of robotics and automated systems. The concept of a person working to ensure his material existence is already outdated. Marx wrote about it almost two hundred years ago.

Technology has reached a level of development where ten people are able to grow crops for ten million, and others will produce the special force that stabilizes all of society and brings it to an optimal form where the ten people that are capable now of serving ten million will be able to serve ten billion.

We receive a blessing from above for everything that we do. In addition, we are beginning to understand to what extent we need this. We realize that we should confine ourselves to rational consumption in order not to poison the environment. We are learning to unite human society and, by this, to save energy and money and eliminate suffering, wars, and terrorism.

We don’t need to go to the terrorists and conduct lectures for them. Through attracting the common Light, the common force, we calm down all of the disturbances. It is not necessary to deal partiicularly with Pakistan or ISIS. If we take care of the common correction, all of these hot spots will suddenly calm down. Terrorists will suddenly feel that they should treat people with more kindness.

Question: What is the most powerful fulfillment that you can offer to a person instead of spending time shopping?

Answer: First of all it is necessary to understand that the purpose of life is not in filling the wardrobe with dresses and shoes and the house with furniture. It gives us pleasure only because we are accustomed to it.

Today people prefer other types of entertainment: traveling and visiting new places. Tourism today is the most developed industry in the world. People want to understand, feel, and get acquainted with other countries and other people. This already is some kind of advancement and not such a primitive life like running from home to work, from work to the store and back home.

Gradually some distancing from the material world happens. Today, while traveling around the world, people pay less attention to the clothes. Everyone dresses the way it is comfortable and enjoyable for him. Externality fades to the background because we are looking for more internal fulfillment.

We live in the era of mobile phones, computers, various gadgets that create unusual images and sounds for us. However, I think that to the extent that humanity will sink into depression and seek new fillings, comes the next step: the desire not to buy material things, but to acquire the meaning of life. A person will feel that this is the commodity that belongs to eternity and gives eternal fulfillment.

Today we try to rise above the material world with the help of 3-D glasses that take us to a virtual reality. Humanity still materializes spirituality, but in the end, a person will be able to rise above the boundaries of life. Humanity aspires exactly to this, and we are right on the threshold of this ascent.

Question: What does the ascent above the boundaries of life mean?

Answer: It means that I want to receive pleasure from knowing and seeing the fact that I rose above life and death. I don’t want to feel limited.

Question: When people wander through the malls, they feel very lonely. There are crowds around you, but you feel cold and rejected. And how will a person feel in the less material reality?

Answer: There we will be required to get acquainted with each other and to connect. After all, if we want to rise above our life and attain our eternal purpose, then this is only possible through our connection when we rise above egoism and achieve the sense of freedom.

Egoism keeps us in slavery all the time, dictating to us about shopping and everything else and making black not only Black Friday, but also the rest of our lives. Therefore, we will have to rise above it in order to reveal the eternal world before us and to acquire it!

Question: Wouldn’t a person feel himself too small to acquire the upper world?

Answer: On the contrary, a person will match the upper world and fill it. Moreover, he will feel that he reveals the world inside himself, inside the new desire that he developed above his egoism by connecting with others. Within his connection with others, he will reveal the ability to rise above himself and to feel infinite reality. This is the best shopping!

This is the best and eternal acquisition that we can do in our world during this life. I open my shop for all who wish to buy this commodity: eternal life, the sense of infinite and boundless life. As it is written in The Book of Zohar, “Everyone who wants to buy him may come and buy.”

“The fundamental contradiction that lies at the basis of most of today’s problems in the world economy is the contradiction associated with the growth of productivity of labor.

“All the ‘market’ economic schools and theories try to solve this fundamental problem by stimulating consumption through consumer loans… .

“We are in a situation where, and the means of production, and goods and money, which can buy these products, are concentrated in the hands of the ultra-low number of super-rich people. And because they themselves have nothing to sell but their consumption is completely closed…, the driver for the growth in production arise from nowhere, and the global economy stagnates predictably. …

“I’m not inventing anything here, everything is perfectly predicted and described by Comrade Karl Marx in his Capital more than a hundred years ago.”

My Comment: ““The current crisis of the world economic system is not tractable [manageable] within the limits of the existing wealth distribution model …” A more unified system has to emerge. There are two ways to bring about change: through awareness and reform (Achishena – I shall hasten it) or through conflict (Beito – in its time). The changes are inevitable, we can only choose the path, short and easy or long and painful, but not the outcome!

Question: Once people went to a store to buy things they needed. Today, shopping has turned into a form of entertainment. How did this change in approach happen?

Answer: People don’t buy what they need, they buy what advertising encourages them to buy. They go to big shopping centers and receive pleasure from it.

The fact is that our egoism requires fulfillment, and we don’t know how to fill it so that the filling will become perfect, eternal, or at least prolonged. Our lives are directed only to be filled, filled, filled, and to get, get, get.

We live at much a higher frequency than before. In the past, a person knew that he needed a wardrobe and went to a carpenter to order it. There were no shops filled with completed wardrobes. The same is true with respect to clothes. There were no commercially ready-made garments, people had to go to a tailor for them to be sewn.

Nowadays, we come to a shop where we can find clothes of any style, color, and size. It is more convenient, but because the clothes are already there, it entices us to buy them and forces the shopkeeper to try to sell them quickly. Therefore, it has resulted in completely exaggerated consumption and competition.

We go to shops not to buy necessary food, clothes, and shoes, but to have a look at what they have and to buy something we like but don’t need. But this consumerism develops us as humans because we get used to the fact that we are guided in life not by the necessities but simply by whim. It means that we have begun to realize how low-lying our actions are. We don’t feel that we are people who control our desires and have a firm point of view on what we need.

Instead, we give in to the entreaties and advertising, and our “I” disappears. This culture of consumption shapes our new generation, which doesn’t notice deception and trusts advertising. We are completely empty people and buy everything the shops and media sell: opinions, culture, and worldview.

This process switches off our brain because we don’t need to think about anything. The main thing is to have money in our pocket or at least a credit card. Loans and debts are the reality of today’s life.

Question: Consumerism is the new religion of our time. How else, apart from shopping, can a person be filled?

Answer: For this, we need to give a person a special education. The cult of consumption isn’t just purchasing some item or apparel, it also watching a movie and listening to music imposed on us, and reading the news on websites with 90%  of the content clogged with advertising.

The news is also presented to us specifically to confuse us and burden our heads with all kinds of nonsense. Only a special education can save us from this disease of consumerism and give us other, higher requirements for life and fulfillment.

We are not free in anything, even where to go on vacation. Wherever we turn, advertising is everywhere, guiding us in a certain direction. This American culture has spread all over the world.

Question: So, what can replace it and provide the same satisfaction shopping does?

Answer: We need to give a person a different goal in life that is more eternal, perfect, and great. After all, we get tired of the things we bought the day after buying them. So we need to understand that we have the ability to desire and receive much more significant and eternal fulfillment. The feeling of lack and its filling with what we were lacking brings us satisfaction.

In the News (Motherboard): “It’s a common belief that low-wage workers will be hit the hardest by advanced robots in the workplace. When we take a global perspective on this, the people that will be most affected by widespread automation won’t be workers in North America, according to a new United Nations report—it’ll be people in developing countries.

“Automation stands to reduce opportunities for low-wage workers in North America, the report from the UN Conference on Trade and Development states. But the types of jobs most likely to be eliminated entirely are more prevalent in developing nations. That’s because those same jobs, in sectors like farming and manufacturing, have already mostly dried up in wealthier nations as corporations have moved their operations abroad, in search of higher profits through lower wage costs.

“The developing world stands to lose “about two thirds of all jobs,” according to the report. That’s a staggering figure, and well above most credible estimates for job losses due to automation in the West. …

“While the UN report is talking about the effects of robots in the workplace, what’s really at issue is the profit-seeking behaviour of corporations. And in a globalized economy, shifts in labour power aren’t just felt in wealthy nations, but all over the world. In China, for example, factory owners have already used robots and automation as a tool to do away with rabble-rousing workers.

“The countries with the most robots will likely see the greatest gains in productivity, the report notes—China is currently leading the pack in robot acquisition, the UN says—but there is an upside for countries without enough wealth to bring in enough robot workers to stay competitive… sort of. …

“As it is, though, the UN report paints a pretty bleak vision of the future: fewer jobs here, and way fewer jobs over there. But hey, at least some people will be making money.”

My Comment: Progress cannot be stopped because it is not a human whim but an objective, evolutionary, and natural development of society. Resisting this development is done at one’s  “own peril.” We must understand that robots are replacing people; nature is leading us to nothing other than a reorganization and change in the structure of society.

Machines should serve all people, and people must move to another level of activities—building a new society in the image of nature. For the first time in history, humanity is becoming freed from the need to spend its time and life serving its physical body.

This will be left to the robots. We will be involved with ourselves! We are raising ourselves to a meaningful level of connection, existence, and understanding the meaning of life! This must be a priority. We need to make a social revolution, change the attitude of the person toward his life, rebuild the media (a process that is already happening through a transition from the communications media to Internet sources), but the main thing is the re-education of ourselves!

Question: Is the economic status of every person determined from the start? What is this spiritual correction: the test of poverty or wealth?

Answer: It is pre-determined for everyone in accordance with his or her program of life.

There are four types of attitudes toward money that correspond to the four phases of ego development, but in fact, it is up to everyone to make the transformation to altruism and it is not necessary to pay attention to fate since it is possible to change that specifically with the help of an attitude toward wealth. In the wisdom of Kabbalah, wealth is called an extension of the Light of Hochma into the Light of Hassadim within the person.

Comment: We once rode in the car with a billionaire who was the owner of real estate and other property and all the way he was crying and complaining about his life….

My Comment: I have met with billionaires who own airplanes, ships, banks, and companies, yet I cannot say that they are wealthy.

They have no sense of true wealth, and if they do, it becomes completely closed off by the course of their lives in this world. In such a case the wealth “kills” the person because it obligates him to be constantly concerned about his welfare and he limits himself to this.

I had a turning point in life when I decided to give up great wealth and my business. I thank the Creator because it is only through His power that it was possible to do this. I simply closed my business and travelled to my teacher, Rabash, without hesitation.

Before then, I had a sufficiently long search of the spiritual path, but I could not break away from my business. But the moment I found my teacher, no questions remained. I left and that was it.

Many of my students are in intermediary states such that on the one hand, they are concerned about their capital, and on the other hand, they would like to be engaged with the wisdom of Kabbalah, but are unable to do so because of their business involvements. And that is how they are torn between the two worlds.
