We Do Not Have To—We Can

962.2Question: Every morning we get up and say: “We have to get up early for work. We have to make another business call. We have to exercise. We have to write an article. We have to go to our son’s game.” And by replacing only two words in these sentences, we can change the general approach to life. You do not “have to”—”you can.”

You can get up early for work. You can make another call. You can prepare dinner for the whole family. And the perception of life, the perception of everything that happens in it, changes.

What is the advantage and what is the distinction between the two attitudes: “has to” or “can”?

Answer: It depends on one’s perception of the world. I either want absolute peace and agree, like Oblomov, to lie in bed all the time, I have everything, I do not want anything, I will wait for the day I die. So what?

Or I feel that this life is worthy of being able to fix something in it, achieve something else, become different. And then I rejoice at the opportunity before me. It depends on what kind of attitude you have to life: creative or consumeristic.

Question: Does the consumer attitude lead a person to the point of “I have to” or “I can”?

Answer: I want and that is it. I want to use everyone and everything—this is the consumer attitude to life. And the opposite is to use this life to rise to its next level.

Question: Life means that there is always an opportunity to use every state?

Answer: There is always an opportunity in life. Always look for an opportunity and seize it.

Question: Then I have a few questions and please comment on them.

The biggest obstacle is fear. Is it true?

Answer: Uncertainty and fear immobilize a person, closes and “cans” him, that is, deprive him of the opportunity to act.

Comment: The biggest mistake is to lose heart.

My Response: This is also true. “The biggest,” I don’t know. But it is a big mistake. The biggest one is to disconnect from the Creator.

Question: So you still need to be connected to Him?

Answer: And without connection to the Creator where will the forces come from? Where will the direction come from? Where will the appeal to the one who corrects and does everything come from? I am not doing all this. I simply must turn right to Him for Him to do everything.

Comment: The most dangerous person is a liar.

My Response: Yes. But I do not listen to them so I do not think they are dangerous people. If only someone really asks for help, spiritual help—to find a goal in life, strength to realize this goal—then I hear, but otherwise, no. Therefore, no one can seduce me.

Question: Who, then, is the most dangerous person?

Answer: For man, the most dangerous person is himself. Who can harm him except himself? No one.

Question: And how can he harm?

Answer: By the fact that he listens to himself, to his egoism. Trusting his beloved self.

Question: Who needs to be trusted?

Answer: The teacher or the Creator. This is, in principle, the same thing.

Comment: The most insidious feeling is envy.

My Response: This is the most wonderful feeling if a person can correctly implement it. There is nothing better than envy! There is nothing more, generally, there is nothing better than envy to move forward.

Question: Can you give an exercise on how to use envy correctly?

Answer: You must first find a goal, and then envy everything that leads to this goal.

Comment: The most beautiful act is to forgive.

My Response: The most beautiful act—it is not to forgive. The most beautiful act is to direct a person to the truth.

You do not have to forgive anything. The Creator forgives nothing! There is judgment, continuous judgment. And thanks to the fact that nothing is forgiven, we understand where we are wrong, and we can correct ourselves.

Question: And in relations between people, should a person judge himself or others?

Answer: Why should I judge someone, or myself, or others? I judge the Creator, I always go to Him, and so I check everything with Him. This is called “I judge Him.” Then there is no offense, no reason for forgiveness. Everything is checked only in relation to the goal.

Comment: The best protection is a smile.

My Response: I do not think so. It seems to me that a smile, to the contrary, can be perceived as mockery, disdain, and condescension.

It is best to show a person that you do not consider him at all, that you are directed only at your goal, and he has nothing to do with it. And therefore, you don’t treat him well or badly, but you relate to him to the extent that you can show him what is worth paying attention to in life.

Comment: The most powerful force is faith.

My Response: By faith I understand something completely different from what ordinary people understand, and therefore I believe that there is no greater error in life than faith. There is nothing more harmful in life than a person who believes.

Faith in Kabbalah is the ability to be above your egoistic principles and just give everything. The power of bestowal is the power of faith in a person. That is, it is an active force that helps a person to rise above his egoistic nature: the property of Bina over the property of Malchut. Only in this way.

Otherwise, faith is I closed my eyes and left.

Comment: The best support is hope.

My Response: No. We cannot hope. There should be hope only to the extent that I grant myself correct advancement.

In Kabbalah, the surrounding light is called hope. It has not yet entered you, but it already shines on you because you are correctly directed toward the goal. That is, hope is a very serious advancement. Measured! Everything is deterministic

Comment: The best gift is love

My Response: The best gift is love. Yes! But by love we mean absolute merging with other desires in the general fulfillment by the Creator.

Comment: A person strives all his life for love, for hope, for support.

My Response: This is from weakness, from ignorance, inability, and the fact that he is just a lazy person. The whole culture of being positive refers to weakness, laziness, and slovenliness.

Comment: Therefore, some researchers advise against the urge to strive to be happy.

My Response: No, you really need to be happy. You just need to find out what kind of state it is to be happy. What is absolute happiness? Merging with the higher force because it is absolute.

Question: And then what does the person receive?

Answer: He receives the same state the higher force is in. His benefit is that he becomes equal to the Creator. There is no state more perfect.

Question: How does this distinguish him from an ordinary person?

Answer: An ordinary person is a small egoistic animal looking all the time for a warm corner. And a person who achieves merging with the Creator does not need to look for this warm corner, he is already in it, truly in the most comfortable state.

Question: And at the same time, people are striving for the positive, striving for absolute happiness that they cannot grasp. When faced with troubles, with strong grief, illness, or tragic situations, they keep silent about them. Is this a correct attitude?

Answer: No, by no means. A person must react very vividly to any manifestations in his life of bad and good traits, qualities, forces, and phenomena in order to format himself according to the highest state. Otherwise, he will miss his whole life.

Question: And if something tragic happens in a person’s life, how can he use this state?

Answer: Measure this tragic component in his life with respect to the absolute: is it de facto tragic, or maybe they want to bring him closer to the truth with a very strong influence.

Question: And what does a person need to do?

Answer: He goes to clearly find out the purpose, the truth, the central state of the world.

Question: Accepting the negative in order to direct everything toward the goal, is this a skill that can be learned?

Answer: To do this, you need to be in school, in the study of Kabbalah. To do this, you need to be in a certain state, in a certain atmosphere, encircled, and then it will work out.

Comment: Researchers say older people learn to accept negative things more easily to push them toward goals than younger people.

My Response: Naturally, this comes from life experience. But, in principle, this has nothing to do with Kabbalah.

“Why Do We Exist?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: Why do we exist?

Many people ask about why we exist, and it leads us to change our lives in one way or another.

I have personally delved very deep into this question. At university, I studied bio-cybernetics, the human body’s systems, thinking that I could discover why we exist by doing so, but I found no answers in that field.

Only several years later did I find the answer in the wisdom of Kabbalah. I was always troubled by the question about why we exist, because without knowing its answer, I could not see why life was worth living. In our present times, I see the younger generation especially troubled by this question, even if they are not verbalizing it with those exact words. When we find no answers to why we exist, then we feel our existence here as purposeless, and as a result, we suffer in a variety of ways and intensities.

To discover why we exist, we need to discover the origin of existence, from which it all started and developed.

The origin of existence is the upper force.

The upper force—or “the Creator,” the “upper light,” “nature” and several other names for it—is essentially where we all come from, and our existential questions emerge from this force. We exist ultimately in order to discover why we exist. However, how we achieve a clear perception and sensation as to why we exist is another question.

How can we attain the origin of our existence?

“Why do we exist?” is a question that we humans specifically ask, and not other lifeforms. Moreover, not all people ask this question, and those who do, ask it in different intensities.

From one generation to the next, we feel an increasing need to answer the question as to why we exist. Especially in our generation, this question is expressed by more and more people suffering, whether in the forms of depression, stress, loneliness, anxiety, drug abuse, increasing mental illnesses, suicides, extremism, as well as several other problems.

The wisdom of Kabbalah has seen a widespread emergence in our times so that anyone who feels this question can find its answer. Kabbalah is a method that lets us undergo self and social transformation in order to feel a new sense of reality, one that is complete, interconnected and full of goodness and happiness.

We achieve why we exist when we achieve a clear perception and sensation of the force that created and develops us. Such a new perception provides us with a clear understanding of why we are here. By achieve the origin of our existence, we achieve no less than eternity and perfection while living in this world.

“What Is The Meaning Of Life And Why Are We Here?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: What is the meaning of life and why are we here?

The meaning of life is to change our nature from receiving to giving, from hatred to love, from rejecting others to drawing closer to them.

When we undergo this transformation, we will feel a completely different existence, a reverse world. We will find fulfillment in fulfilling others, and by doing so, we will feel a complete and eternal state of perfection.

What You Need To Learn From The Example Of The Japanese

733Question: In Japan, the number of suicides has turned out to be greater than the victims of the coronavirus for the whole of 2020. The reason for this is clear: economic difficulties, layoffs from work. The Japanese are very responsible, they have a painful state of responsibility.

Please tell me, what is it? We always talk about the “crown,” [coronavirus] and here there are more suicides in a month than in the entire period of corona.

Answer: The fact is that this is the character of a people who must be tied to some common cultural, historical, national values, and cannot feel free.

There is no freedom for them. They live on a small island to this day. To this day they are cut off from the world at heart.

They can travel, take photos of everything everywhere. But they have not left the mental and psychological development of being isolated on their small islands, in the small archipelago of Japan, plus the defeat in the Second World War with the atomic bomb and so on.

That is, they have a very huge pressure. Working for them is like forgetting. In this they simply find themselves. And now, when no one needs this work, everyone is being fired there.

And they cannot live without it because it is like an umbilical cord to the mother; they are so attached to their work. After all, they have everything at work, and therefore for them if there is no work, then there is nothing to exist for.

Work. When you have to get up, you have to go to work, you come after it, and you have a drink, maybe some glass of your own sake and go to bed. In general, this is your life. There is still a family, but all this is still within the same framework.

I cannot imagine Japan existing in a different rhythm. I cannot imagine why the government doesn’t organize fake jobs for both men and women in order to organize them in this way. After all, a free Japanese is nonsense! That is impossible! You see how they walk, how they drive.

They can’t do it any other way! For them, all these clear lines of conduct are necessary.

Question: This is what we are talking about, the Japanese. But there are a million suicides every year in the world. People commit suicide. Do you think this phenomenon will continue to grow?

Answer: This exists even among animals. Therefore, I believe that when egoism loses the meaning of existence, at any level-animal or higher, it makes a calculation: Is it worth living or not?

Question: But in principle is this a loss of the meaning of life by and large? Is that the whole point?

Answer: Of course, life does not pay for itself.

Question: So in order for a person not to commit suicide, he must have such a meaning of life that is eternal?

Answer: No, not eternal. But at least the pleasure, the fulfillment, I get eventually exceeds the costs. That is, I am left with some kind of positive balance. Otherwise, what is the point of living? Just because I’m afraid of dying? So I’m not afraid.

Question: How do you feel about the fact that there is a suicide gene? They say that American scientists have found 22 suicide genes. If we remember Hemingway, then his father, sister, brother and granddaughter all committed suicide; there were five deaths for three generations.

Does this suicide gene exist?

Answer: Gene I do not know; I am not strong in this matter, but there is a predisposition to this, of course. And the Japanese have it, and there are such peoples, such tribes, such times, and so on.

Question: And how to get out, how to defeat, either this predisposition or the gene?

Answer: Meaning.

Question: Only the search for meaning?

Answer: Only. And how else? Because the meaning of life and its correct implementation are already leading you to a new life. You don’t have to die or imagine anything. You will now see your future world in this life. Please, everything is in front of you. It only depends on the correct implementation.

Question: What is the meaning of life?

Answer: The meaning of life is to change your nature from receiving to giving, from hatred to love, from rejection to drawing closer to others.

And then you will feel a completely different existence in these properties. And it will be the reverse world. You will find fulfillment in filling others. And there will be no disappointment in this. We will come to this.

Kabbalah And Philosophy: The Question Of The Meaning Of Life

219.01Question: Did philosophers of the past ask themselves the question about the meaning of life?

Answer: Yes, but they treated this issue in the same way as many people today, purely speculatively.

They did not understand that one must enter the upper world, feel it, open it up, and exist simultaneously in two worlds, through our world to see the next one, the spiritual one. They did not understand that it is the same as attaining our world, and therefore, they worked purely with reason.

Comment: You have repeatedly said that all spiritual methods and religions originated from Kabbalah, from Abraham.

My Response: Yes, they are even called Abrahamic.

Question: In that generation souls very close to nature prevailed, and it was enough for a person to ask the question: What is the meaning of my life? Why did so many become philosophers then?

Answer: It does not matter whether a person asked this question or not. All the same, one should have had a point in the heart, should nonetheless have felt that he was attracted by the revelation of the upper world, that he had to feel it, learn from his own experience and not think that he is already in the higher realm based on some mental or physical exercises.

Do Not Pull Out The Weeds

629.4Question: There was a man who took great pride in his beautiful lawn. One day, he saw dandelions growing in the grass. No matter how hard he tried to fight it, to his dismay the dandelions continued their rapid growth. He turned to a sage and asked: “How can you help me clear the field of dandelions?” “You need to start loving them,” said the sage.

We want to see a certain kind of field, a certain kind of life, but life is full of dandelions. We keep fighting them, but the struggle never leads to anything. Do we have to love them in order for them to disappear?

Answer: Of course not.

Question: What will happen?

Answer: There will be not only dandelions, but all sorts of weeds and thorns. And you will realize that this is what should exist in this field. But you will find yourself in the correct interaction with them. You will see a new life, a new world, in their manifestations toward you.

Question: So my task is not to clear the field of weeds?

Answer: Not to do anything. What appears before us should be appearing exactly as it is. We only take out of it what we need for our existence and leave everything else as is. It will change depending on our inner changes.

Question: So I never destroy anything?

Answer: You should never destroy anything!

Question: What if I encounter evil, all sorts of troubles, haters?

Answer: Do nothing! You cannot destroy anything. You cannot do anything about either good or evil. You cannot even understand what is evil and what is good. This is possible only when we behave correctly, and then through our internal balance between all our bad and good qualities, each within himself and between us, we cause changes in the surrounding nature: animate, vegetative, and inanimate, as well as changes in their balance.

Question: How do I act correctly regarding what I see?

Answer: I must work at the level of “love your neighbor as yourself” and perceive everything around me as a manifestation of the Creator. I should excel at loving all of nature without trying to see something good or bad in it, which I see through my egoism when something seems good or bad to me based on some criteria of taste, or smell, or its usefulness, while something else does not.

I must accept everything as the upper force and try to shape myself as the correct component of this force, to be in harmony with it, and then everything will fall in its place. My views will change: whatever has to leave will leave, and what needs to stay will remain. If necessary, dinosaurs will reappear, but they will be friendly.

Question: So, I am always trying to break this connection with nature. Is this my main issue?

Answer: Not break it, I am trying to cripple it.

Question: And it responds with weeds, each time bigger and bigger?

Answer: Yes.

Question: And if I try to find a connection with it, to resonate with it, then I will practically not notice the weeds?

Answer: I will simply not criticize it. If I need something, I will take very carefully from it, but never harm it.

It all depends on the attitude. Attitude is not a physical action. It happens afterward. It is the feeling of love for everything around me because it comes from the Creator.

I look at everything as nasty, dirty, as cruelty among animals and so on, and I see that it is all nature, coming from the Creator.

And the reason for it being this way is also explained to me in the Torah. If man were kind, then all other parts of nature under him would also be kind to each other. And naturally, the lion would lie down with the lamb, and the little child would play with them, and everything would be fine. It depends only on the attitude of people toward nature. I think we will see this. It is pretty close.

Question: By nature you mean virtually the whole universe?

Answer: The entire universe including our world and all interactions in it. Up to the point that we can change our relationship to nature in such a way that with our good attitude, we will never get a negative reaction from it. On the contrary, if you need to take something from nature—like water or bread—you are welcome to. Everything will grow and bloom beautifully and there will be enough for everyone! All we need to do is to correct our relations.

This is not a fairy tale. I think people will start to understand this. And then they will curtail all their grand plans like flying to Mars or others. They will not need any of it.

The most important thing is to make our life on Earth self-sufficient, beautiful, and to engage in inner contemplation. Not through physical external expansion. We will achieve nothing by it. We will only burn ourselves and exhaust all our resources. But on the contrary: by inner deep scrutiny into nature, we will begin to attain its eternity, infinity, and its altogether different structure. This is where everything is.

I think that people will now go through a certain stage of realizing the uselessness of their scientific and technological development and become convinced of its futility.

We see today that all these years of progress have amounted to nothing. It allowed us to grow to eight billion people instead of two billion in the course of 100 years. But what good is it? Who among these people who were born and grew up are happy or satisfied? What good are they doing for themselves or the world? Perhaps it would have been better not to bring them into the world or develop them but let them exist in a different form, not developing, not being born.

Question: Is it possible to exist without being born?

Answer: Of course. What good is there in them coming to this world? It says so in the Torah, the sages sat and discussed: who is happy—one who was born or one who was not born? And they decided, happy, of course, is one who was not born, but if you were born, you must behave correctly.

Question: So you should still choose the goal of life correctly?

Answer: Yes. But the one who was not born is happier. And what does he do then? He has a different life we know nothing of in a non-physical form.

What To Choose: $10 Million Or The Meaning Of Life?

025.01Question: We are living through a difficult time, people have clearly matured, many are reconsidering their lives and thinking about the future. Against this background, sociologists asked a simple question, “What would you prefer: to search for the meaning of life or to win 10 million dollars in the lottery?” 85% chose money.

In the near future, we will open Kabbalah courses. What would you say to people? What will they find in these courses? The meaning of life or the equivalent of money confidence in the present, the future, or something else?

Answer: You understand our world is a small ball and we are flying on it, riding it like Munchausen [in Baron Munchausen’s Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia] on the core through airless space, dark space, dead space, which is absolutely not ready to revive us, support us, feed us or water us.

In this state, we exist only due to the fact that there are special conditions on this small piece of our universe. Moreover, no matter how many such conditions are searched for in the universe, they do not exist!

This blue planet is special. And if we do not take care of it, then we will end our existence there. Therefore, I think the most important thing for us is not money. The most important thing for us is to protect our planet.

But in order to protect it, we need to know the forces that exist that it depends on. And that is why this small living organism called Earth is a living organism! It is thanks to it that we exist; it must exist. Therefore, first of all we should think about it.

When I hear that trillions of dollars are spent on weapons of mass destruction every year in the world, I feel very bad. Because today one strong, modern atomic bomb is enough for this globe to be carried in the wrong direction. Simply the wrong way!

Its orbit shifts a little, something happens, and that’s it! Life changes not because of some small pandemic we are experiencing, but because environmental conditions are changing so much that we suddenly cannot breathe, we cannot exist with such a level of radiation, and so on.

This, I think, is the most important thing. We must, through the necessity of the sustainable development of the Earth and the conditions we exist in, first of all take care of the atmosphere, the environment we live in. Kabbalah speaks precisely about this, how we should properly take care of our future.

Question: And you put this blue ball as the basis for everything?

Answer: Yes. It is blue because it still has a small oxygen pad on it. But there will be no oxygen cushion for it to lie on, then that will be it! It will turn red like Mars, or blue like Venus, or something else. He will turn red, turn blue, and that is it.

Question: So what? Kabbalists are not ecologists, they do not say, “Let’s save the ecology.”

Answer: No. But I am addressing people who just want to continue to exist, to live on this Earth. That is why I say that instead of $10 million, you can do much more for your life, security, and development.

Question: Will they find the meaning of life in this?

Answer: They will not find the meaning of life in anything unless they begin to properly delve into the science of Kabbalah. Then they will find not only the meaning of life, but a connection with the source of life. And through it, they will already find the meaning of everything that exists in general: the universe, the Earth, themselves, everything that happens to them every minute, what has been, and what will be.They will find all this only if they begin to understand the world correctly.

Question: Do you think they will come to this in our Kabbalah courses?

Answer: Yes. They will not get this anywhere else. I think this is already provable and there is no need to try to find anything anywhere else. The science of Kabbalah in comparison with all other sciences, theories, philosophies, and so on puts forward such a practical methodology and invites everyone, regardless of gender or religion, to master it and rise above the question of the meaning of life, that is, to the source of life.

And then absolutely all the questions that arise in a person become clear to him, even before he asks the question.

I invite you to take courses. I believe that if a person in our time cannot answer these questions for himself, then he cannot properly equip himself.

Question: What questions?

Answer: The meaning of life. Why is this happening? How can I fix it all? Those are the most fundamental questions of existence.

So we must master this science. It is not difficult. I’m not talking about being in it, starting to work in it, like a scientist in a laboratory, and so on. No.

This is in the form, to the extent that a person can be the creator of his own destiny.

Question: And you can become the creator of your own destiny?

Answer: Of course! Be a creator!

Question: Is it a great thing to become the creator of your own destiny?

Answer: Yes. We must. The Creator did everything, prepared, created, and gave us the opportunity to know, comprehend, change, and correct everything that is needed, and thus live in a world that we can make as comfortable as possible for ourselves.

Open The Upper World

36Question: When you met with different spiritual leaders did you find any point of contact with them?

Answer: No, none, because their teachings are built on the suppression of selfishness.

All methods except for Kabbalah are built on the suppression of egoism—to desire less, think less, eat less, move less, that is, to constantly reduce oneself in one’s earthly manifestations. And Kabbalah says: “Leave all earthly manifestations. You must develop your spiritual part.”

The earthly part is everything in which we exist, i.e., taking care of our body. As long as it lives we think about it, and this is our whole life. Imagine that you have some kind of animal and your whole life is devoted only to caring for it. And it lives from such and such a day to such and such a day, these seventy years, and you live with it. It dies, and you die.

Kabbalah says: “Rise above this animal so that not only it fills your entire existence because besides this there is another life. Look at the world.” And when you start looking at the world not through this animal—you give it what it needs, but look above it—you open the upper world.

Question: But an ordinary person cannot rise above this animal?

Answer: They cannot. They cannot even try to get out of it and do not understand what it means.

It means to acquire another completely different property, bestowal. After all the property with which I am in this animal is the property of receiving, and it just keeps me in itself.

But inside me initially there is a rudiment of my next state, the spiritual state. It pulls me out of this animal, pulls me to find out: “For the sake of what do I exist? Really in the name of this life? Really in the name of these years in which I am in my body and die?” If I have this urgent question that haunts me and I am obliged to answer it, then I am already in a state where I really need Kabbalah.

For the first time such states are revealed only in our generation. And therefore, only now is the science of Kabbalah being revealed to mankind, and very indifferently: whoever wants it, please; whoever doesn’t want it, no need. No one convinces anyone. The entrance is free, the exit is even freer.

Without Postponing For Hundreds Of Years

760.1Question: The writer Ivan Yefremov in his 1963 book Razor’s Edge says: “Man is like the universe, deep, mysterious, boundless. The most important thing is to find in a person everything that he needs right now, without postponing it for hundreds of years into the future and without appealing to upper beings from outer space.”

What do you think about this?

Answer: I think that if a person wants to reveal the essence of one’s existence, what one lives for, then one can do it at any time, in any place. Everything depends only on the person. However, this definitely should not be postponed.

To Know Everything About Yourself

198Question: What does a person have to change to be happy?

Answer: To see the world one is in.

Question: Does one need to change some external conditions for that?

Answer: No, absolutely not! Open a book or connect to our website on the Internet. He will get everything from there.

Comment: But it sounds somewhat unrealistic that my happiness depends on reading a book or listening to some channel.

My Response: This is how Kabbalah works. This is a special science that is revealed in this way.

On the other hand, I would say that there is nothing special here. Isn’t the same thing happening to me when I study other sciences—let’s say psychology?

Comment: But I don’t change. By studying any some science, I just accumulate knowledge.

My Response: It depends on what kind of science. If you study the science about yourself, then you change. I said psychology, not veterinary science or geology.

It is not easy. I am changing because the science is about me and about how I can discover the higher world. It is said that Kabbalah is the science of the revelation of the Creator to a person in this world, in this life. By the Creator, we mean the whole of nature, true, global nature, of which we currently feel only one percent, and therefore we do not know how to behave in this world, and not only in it. What happens to us after we die?

Comment: Nobody knows this.

My Response: So I can find it out. Why should I live in this world without knowing what will happen to me next? Then this life has no meaning either. And thus the whole picture is opened for us and it unfolds in front of us—everything right here where we exist.
