The Decline Of Babylon, Part 4

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: After the ego ignited, it forced the Babylonians to scatter over the face of the Earth. Did humanity develop only under the influence of this negative force?

Answer: It is not that a positive force doesn’t exist in a person. It exists in every human, but it is not clearly revealed nor does it direct and propel them forward.

The disciples of Abraham differed from the disciples of Nimrod in that they discovered within them the two forces: the explicit ego and the implicit yearning something, bestowal and love. But they didn’t yet feel this, at first they simply searched for the meaning of life. The second force was discovered within the meaning of life, which is beyond the physical earth, above egoism.

In this plane, the ego shows us what is possible to obtain here and how it is possible to satisfy and fulfill yourself. The second force goes above this plane because it is built on connection, on unity. This is the next level.

Yes, this force exists in everyone, but, in the disciples of Nimrod, it was not clearly revealed at that time. As a result, they did what was possible to do in their present stage. They dispersed or created new connections, they mixed or fought, they made alliances, marriages, or the opposite. However, all of this was on a physical level.

And it is only now that the call for the meaning of life has begun to be awakened in them. However, since they don’t see Abraham among them, they sink into drugs, into all possible kinds of excesses, into wars, etc. Anything just to fill and to shut off their emptiness.

Humanity On The Threshold Of Divorce

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe entire method about which the Torah speaks, from the first Adam (man) until entering the land of Israel, is the process within a group of Kabbalists who discover the evil within the group while working on the spiritual connection between them. From then on, only good is discovered.

The discovery of evil is all the hatred that separates people and is discovered to the degree that they want to connect. However, now instead of quarreling over various insipid matters, if humanity would want to connect, it would not need to discover the evil. All of their evil is found within the people of Israel. Therefore, the nations of the world cannot correct this evil alone. They do this with the help of the people of Israel and reach correction all at once.

After all, if the true evil of the ego were revealed in them at the moment that they begin to connect, the world would be drowning in evil. They really would be devouring each other down to the bone. So, the work of connection was given only to the people of Israel who are called the “stiff-necked people.”

The people of Israel do the work of connection and transform themselves into a “glue” that can connect all of humanity. They work together with the nations of the world, but their evil inclination is not revealed in this work.

This is an interesting concept. After all, the evil inclination is specifically revealed at the time of connection between people, and we need to work with that. The Torah tells us about this in all the stages of the wilderness. In other words, they are the stages of revealing the ego that is gradually discovered and corrected. It seems as if the children of Israel were wrong, transgressed, and violated the commands of the Creator. However, it is precisely in this way that they corrected themselves and prepared themselves for entry into the land of Israel.

After their entry into the land of Israel, they still needed to conquer it, but this was already a different war, which was the conquest of the nations in the land of Israel: This was the use of the ego through the power of bestowal that they previously acquired. However, in our day, in order to correct the entire human ego, it is necessary to conquer the entire world by means of the power of bestowal. The nations of the world are not obligated to fight with their evil inclination.

The whole Torah talks about the discovery of evil that is revealed through the inclination to connect. This is similar to what a young couple does when they go through all kinds of conflicts when they try to get along in their shared life. They communicate more and more through a shared kitchen, bedroom, living room, house chores, work, a joint bank account, and spare time.

Before then, they would meet somewhere from time to time, and this didn’t obligate them to do anything. Suddenly, they have lots of reasons to connect, and so the evil inclination is revealed in them.

The entire world now feels like a pair of newlyweds. So, it requires a method, the wisdom of connection, which is the wisdom of Kabbalah. This is required everywhere; in our time there is no possibility of connecting in any other way.

Why are people not ready to connect today? Why do so many couples divorce? It is because not only is the ego revealed but also the true evil inclination. This is because humanity must now be connected all over the globe and on all levels. So, everyone will be required to know the wisdom of Kabbalah that teaches how to overcome the evil inclination.

When you want to connect with your child, you must know how to do this, specifically with the help of the wisdom of Kabbalah. You need to learn to attract the Light that Reforms otherwise you won’t have a connection with your children. Today, parents lose connection with their children who reach adolescence around the age of 13, and, in another decade, this connection will already be weakened by the age of seven or eight, and even earlier.

Today, at the age of three or four, children begin to feel completely independent. For them, a parent is simply a tool for attaining a goal, which is the fulfillment of their desires and no more. Problems of this type will appear everywhere. It is impossible to attain connection without the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Everywhere that people try to connect, in the workplace or at home, they will discover their evil inclination. They will want to connect more and will not be ready for it. So, they will divorce. Even the terrorists are divided and are not ready to connect into one gang. There are so many groups and so many factions among them! The separation will keep on growing everywhere. Soon, everyone will sit in his house with a rifle, and that’s it.

The friends in a group of Kabbalists consciously work on the connection between them. Therefore, all of these phenomena become expressed among them in a very clear and obvious form. However, Kabbalists have the tools for working against their ego, against separation, and against hatred. The friends perform the role of the people of Israel, regarding all of the children of Israel, just as all the people of Israel do with respect to all of humanity. So, all of the people of Israel must work like a group of Kabbalists with respect to the whole world.

A World Without Suffering

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can we pass through those situations that are expected for the world in the near future without suffering?

Answer: The only method is through attracting the Upper Light. You cannot do anything else. So we are going on the way of “I will hasten it,” meaning in the way of the Light. Otherwise there will be continuous suffering or an imbalance in a ratio of 90% suffering and 10% Light.

Look at what is happening with us in Israel, which is a case in point of too little Light and much suffering. Everyone endures suffering, both Israelis and Arabs. In such a manner, we are bringing the nation into a state that is not good.

Question: The most important part of correction is the people of Israel living in the territory of this nation. All of Bnei Baruch is working for the sake of its unity. And what is our role? What must we be involved with here if the correction begins from there? What should our efforts be?

Answer: All of the groups in the world, including the groups in Israel, are connected into one system. The attraction of the Light into our world depends on our common efforts. First of all, the Light works through us downward, and after that, through the people of Israel. The whole problem is that we must consolidate it, but this is a very complicated task. After that, through the people of Israel, the Light will pass to the rest of the world.

We must try to work with these three levels, connecting together as much as possible. There are many resources here that have not been utilized, and if we realize them correctly, there won’t be suffering in the world.

The Unity Of The Nation And The Wisdom Of Kabbalah

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the connection between the unity of the Israeli nation and the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: The wisdom of Kabbalah is the same science that allows us to fulfill the unity and the connection between us. In this unity, we begin to feel the forces that operate in creation, in nature, and in reality. We are brought to the revelation of the one force called the Creator, which means “come and see” (Bo-Re), and the revelation of Kabbalah, which includes everything in creation. It explains how we exist and what process we go through in order to go through the beginning of creation to its end in the best and shortest way. Kabbalah tells us about the goal of our life and how to reach the one force, and it gives us the means to fulfill this goal.

The main thing is to acquire knowledge. If we already know how to advance toward the goal and how to use the forces of nature, our success is guaranteed because we are in nature, which is the equivalent to the upper force, the Creator, and we learn how to use this force.

The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches us how to avoid the blows and get closer to goodness, how to perform all our duties in creation and how to attain the goal in the best and quickest way. After all, if it explains to us the whole system of creation and the forces that operate within it, there is nothing else we need.

Question: So, why, according to the system of creation, does it turn out that the whole world should unite against Israel now?

Answer: If the Israeli nation doesn’t fulfill its mission, then the entire world will undoubtedly take the side of our enemies. We see that all the world news channels show the Israeli-Arab conflict only from the perspective of the population in Gaza and never from the Israeli perspective.

They don’t even mention the fact that Israel is under missile attacks and that people are killed. This doesn’t concern them at all. They don’t hide these facts on purpose, but simply don’t feel them and don’t take them into account. They see that, at the same time, 1,500 people were killed in Gaza while, on the Israeli side, only about a hundred, and so they take the Palestinian side.

Question: You say that this is a war between good and evil and not between Israel and Hamas?

Answer: Of course! After all, it is written, “The hearts of ministers and kings are in the hands of God.” Hamas is merely a weapon in the hands of the upper force. The real war, which the prophets call Armageddon, is between good and evil. This war already is taking place in its fullest between the corporeal Israel and the spiritual Israel.

It is our internal war against our ego in which we will clarify whether we really want to ascend above it and control it, or if it will dominate us. It is a war between the forces of good and evil.

There is only one force that operates in the whole world, in all of nature, called the desire to receive. However, there is another desire among the Israeli nation other than this desire to receive, which is the desire to bestow. This makes Israel different from all the other nations due to the force of bestowal that is concealed within it.

Everything depends on whether Israel uses this force of bestowal or not. If it uses the force of receiving and the force of bestowal in a balanced matter, it attains wholeness and peace. However, if the force of receiving is greater than the force of bestowal, Israel feels this corruption according to their level.

The world aspires for a state of balance, and it is Israel’s duty to bring the positive force of bestowal to the whole world, which means to become Light unto the nations, to teach everyone the meaning of love and bestowal upon others. I hope that we finally will begin to engage in this work and understand what our mission is, and that all the disasters are sent to us only in order to bring us to unity and to set an example of unity for the whole world.

This is what the world expects of Israel. The moment the Israeli nation declares that it is starting to fulfill this mission and really wants to fulfill it, the nations of the world will immediately understand it. They suddenly will see that this is exactly what they want of us, which is an example of how to build a corrected world that is properly connected by the love of friends so that all of humanity becomes one whole.

The People Based On Ideology

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: At present, anti-Semitism is on the rise in the US. In institutions of higher learning, there were campaigns to evict Jewish students from hostels. What kind of future can we expect in the US with respect to this issue that, unfortunately, we must raise?

Answer: We only can say that, as our world becomes increasingly global and interconnected, the attitude toward Jews will deteriorate.

The fact is that the Jewish people appeared on Earth because a small group from Babylon that experienced a similar crisis 3,800 years ago decided to unite and reach a state of mutual responsibility, mutual connection, as it is written, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Abraham, a priest of ancient Babylon, united a group of people on this basis, and from this the people of Israel originated. In other words, according to our biological data, we are not a people like other nations. We are a people based on an idea because the principle of “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the foundation of our formation.

We existed in this state from the time of the exit from Babylon to the destruction of the Second Temple, which occurred 2,000 years ago. During this time, we always were trying to be a single entity, as one man with one heart.

All the beautiful statements of “Love thy neighbor as thyself,” “That which you hate, do not do to your friend,” “All of Israel are brothers,” etc. speak about the essence of our community, which is called the “people.” However, basically, we are a people based on ideology and not because we were born in one tribe that gradually grew like the rest of the nations.

Therefore, our existence can be justified only if we are interconnected. However, the problem is that when we fell 2,000 years ago from the level of “Love thy neighbor as thyself” to unfounded hatred—which is, in principle, the “destruction of the Temple,” the Temple in the heart, the Temple in us—we went “into exile” from this state. In other words, we became as egoistic as all the other nations. Therefore, since then we have lived in such a pitiful state, in exile.

The first time, anti-Semitism appeared in ancient Rome, and then in Greece, because we had ceased to be as one whole.

The Secret Of The Ten Tribes, Part 5

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What was happening in the days of the Temples? Why did they have to be destroyed?

Answer: First of all, why do the Jews unite? Through their correction, they establish relationships among themselves which will allow them to fulfill the condition of “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

To achieve the state in which the Creator will be fully revealed, they must create a single soul and a single desire.

Through  their internal unity, they built the first Temple within themselves. However, this state exists only for a moment and then immediately begins to break down, step by step.

The process is that at first, there is a slow ascent to the “bar” of the desired state, and once it has been reached and becomes manifested, the descent begins immediately.

Question: So, the method of Abraham has achieved its own result and raised people to the desired height?

Answer: Yes. There was contact between the entire nation and the Creator, based on mutual love, during which the nation reached the state of complete individual correction. This is the building of the first Temple.

When a state is realized, the people have nothing to do and no reason to exist at this level, since it exists for only a moment. The Light comes, fills the vessel, and that is all.

Then this state must disappear. Indeed, the process goes on until this handful of people, that has become the nation of Israel, corrects the whole of humanity. Therefore, an entirely new perspective is revealed before them.

The ultimate goal is not the construction of the First Temple, but in the complete correction of all of humanity. This is what Abraham said in Babylon even when he was the only one who knew about this.

But today the Jews say: “Please, leave us alone! What chosen people!? We want to be like everyone else!”

However, they will be compelled. We see that they will be forced,  just as they were then.

A New Abraham

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 18:1-5: And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: “Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: I am the LORD your God. After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes. Mine ordinances shall ye do, and My statutes shall ye keep, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. Ye shall therefore keep My statutes, and Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.”

Under no circumstances should we use the egoistic desires that we took out of Babylon, Egypt, or from the land of Canaan, to which we soon must return. If we use all our desires properly by gradually correcting them and ascending to the previous level of Canaan, we will begin to turn this land into the land of Israel, which means focusing all our desires on the Creator, on bestowal.

Question: The modern corporeal world lives mainly by the laws of Egypt, Babylon, and Canaan but not according to the spiritual laws of Israel. Why is the spiritual revelation in Israel intended only for individuals and not for all of humanity?

Answer: No! Humanity does reveal the egoistic abyss we are all in as well as the inability of returning to the good times we had in the past. But the condition for this good life was that the ego was smaller. Therefore we say “the good old times” when we think nostalgically about the past.

Indeed, if we go fifty years back, we will see that people were less egoistic then. They were satisfied with much less and lived much more happily. They communicated with each other more and didn’t sit behind their computer screens or have the problems or the poisonous vapor of rot that are typical of our times. Everything was much simpler.

But there is no going back to those times and there is no need to do so! We have to advance. The main thing is to learn to attain the reason for the problems that we feel and to understand that they stem from a person’s ego and not from any other source. Therefore, we have to recognize that the ego is evil.

Comment: But the world has turned around when it came out of Babylon and Egypt and went back there, as today we are living by the same laws.

Answer: The world didn’t go anywhere. Humanity dispersed from Babylon all over the world and created the same Babylon everywhere. Today we are back to the small Babylon but on a global scale. Once again we are facing the huge egoistic Tower of Babel that pressures, kills, and destroys us, and we don’t know what to do.

It is now that a new Abraham should appear and call everyone to him: “Everyone who doesn’t agree with the new state, come to me! Let’s leave this state. We are not going anywhere, but we are going to ascend morally and spiritually above this terrible hateful state and start building a totally new land with a new heaven above.”

I hope that such person will appear. We have to prepare the ground for him as much as we can. We are in a very interesting historical point in which it is as if we are tangled and trapped. In this state, we have to fertilize the soil for the next generation. I see this as my mission and without that, there is no point in living.

Question: Indeed, in every egoistic leap in history there was always a leader who emerged and led the nations. Does he also have to appear now?

Answer: I think so. I hope that my students will be able to reveal themselves together as one leader. I don’t think that it will be one person. It may be in some way, but on the whole, it has to be something bigger and collective. I see the new leader as a group of people, and I think it will be the group of my students.

The situation is changing and the world is changing, including its attitude towards itself and to how to live. We see to what extent everything today is the result of advertising. Everyone understands that this world is based on a lie and that it is impossible to find the truth in it. No one is right and no one is to blame, since our nature simply manipulates us in such a way that we drown in this “vanity fair.”

When we finally acknowledge that under the pressure of external circumstances, which we actually summon, the Upper Light will reveal in us real internal, egoistic problems from which we will see that there is no way out. Then we will start to run around and will not be able to find ourselves in any way, as it says: “in the evening you will wait for the morning to come and in the morning you will wait for the evening to come.” But this will probably come after us, and now we have to work on it.

Abraham’s Method—The Wisdom Of Kabbalah

From “Who Are You, People of Israel”:

The wisdom of Kabbalah explains how to unearth nature’s positive force and balance our egos.  It argues that it is predefined in nature’s plan that in the end, all parts of nature, including human society, will achieve unity.

Israel Means Straight to the Creator

Abraham’s disciples called themselves Yisrael (Israel) after their desire to go Yashar El (straight to God, the Creator). That is, they wished to discover nature’s force of unity so as to balance the ego that stood between them. Through their unity, they found themselves immersed in the force of unity, the upper force.

Israel called the state of connection to nature’s upper force that they had discovered “the upper world.” They also learned that in the process of human development, the rest of the Babylonians—who followed Nimrod’s advice, dispersed throughout the world, and have become today’s humanity—would also have to achieve unity. That contradiction between the people of Israel, which formed through unity, and the rest of humanity, which formed as a result of separation, is felt even today.

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Abraham’s group, with their law of love for the other as for oneself, “went” through all the generations in Egypt. They experienced it, got out, stood around Mount Sinai, and became a nation. At the time, where was the group of Nimrod, meaning the rest of humanity, Babylon?

Answer: In the meantime, people gradually dispersed and settled. Kabbalah and the Torah do not study this because they are engaged in the spiritual elevation of man, and this is happening on the same earthly level. All this is described well in Flavius Josephus’ The Antiquities of the Jews.

Question: Let’s go back to the people of Israel, which came into its own “land,” in the egoistic layers of its own desire. How did they begin to process this egoism?

Answer: It was not easy. Firstly, they did not know how to alter it or how to begin to work on it.

They did not have Moses with them. There were no Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. And here  began a different control of the people.

Basically, it was a kingdom. All kinds of frictions arose between them that were not described in the Torah, but in the Prophets and then in the Scriptures. They chose where to build the Temple, meaning where there was a suitable place for the sum of their spiritual desires. But we are not talking about geography, simply this process described in geographical terms.

The twelve tribes began to divide the land among them. There was a condition under which the two tribes should live beyond the Jordan where today’s Jordan is located because it was supposed to be according to the plan of the common soul on earth.

In general, there is a human nature (the soul), as well as animate, vegetative, and still. All these levels are projected on top of each other, and all are built on the same parallel principle. When the human nature begins to be manifested in us, meaning similarity to the Creator, according to this spiritual move, we also change the place of residence. In general, everything changes in us, and we do not even notice how much we change. This happens instinctively, as if by itself. Thus, we begin to explore and discover how we now need to exist.

Question: Do they continue living by the principle of love for the other as for oneself?

Answer: Of course! They continue, deepening it further. This means populating and developing of the land of Israel because the land means desire. Thus, they move forward.

But the matter is not that they divide the land between themselves. In the sources it is described how every tribe settles on its land, where it should be. The borders and clear distribution between them are described. The tribes cannot be mixed with each other because the common desire, the common soul is divided into four levels according to three lines. Hence, (4 x 3) twelve parts, the twelve tribes appeared, which must fully match their purposes, from the spiritual to the earthly level, so that they are exactly and identically added to each other according to these levels and even follow each other in a parallel manner.

Question: So, the correction of the world begins here with this small area, on which the twelve tribes are “laid?”

Answer: Yes. What is interesting is that it is said that later, at the end of the days, all of humanity becomes attached to these twelve tribes (ten of which were lost but will return). Then everything becomes clear because the modern Babylon turns into one whole, and the twelve tribes appear again in order to spread throughout the earth. That is, the “land of Israel,” like La Peau de Chagrin “stretches” throughout the entire globe, not physically of course, but internally.

Thus, this is the process of the correction of the huge layers of still, vegetative, and animate and, in general, human egoism, which is already covered, fused in one whole, and spread over the entire earth in a form that is presented to us today. As a result, from a small point, a new world is formed, with a new intention, and an aspiration “straight to the Creator,” Yashar-El, Israel.

Two Solutions to the Crisis

From “Who Are You, People of Israel”:

Searching for a solution to their conflict led the people of Babylon to form two conflicting views. The first was the view of Nimrod, king of Babylon, and the second was the view of Abraham, then a renowned Babylonian sage.

David Altshuler, author of Metzudat David (David’s Fortress), writes in his commentary on Chronicles One, “Until the days of Nimrod, all the people were equal, and no one prevailed over another so as to rule one another. But Nimrod began to prevail and rule the land.”

In truth, Nimrod made a perfectly reasonable case concerning the emerging hatred among the Babylonians. He argued that they should move beyond the boundaries of Babylon and disperse.

When they are far from one another, he asserted, they would be able to live in peace. Conversely, Abraham’s argument was that dispersion would solve nothing. He explained that according to nature’s law of evolution, human society is bound to become united. As a result, he strove to unite the Babylonians and to build a perfect society.

Succinctly, Abraham’s method entailed connecting people above their personal egos. When he began to advocate his method among his country folk, “thousands and tens of thousands assembled around him, and … He planted this tenet in their hearts,” writes Maimonides (Mishnah Torah, Part 1). The rest of the people chose Nimrod’s way: dispersion, similar to quarrelsome neighbors trying to stay out of each other’s way. These dispersed people gradually became what we now know as “human society.”

Only today, some 4,000 years down the line, can we begin to realize which of them was right, Abraham or Nimrod.
