From my column in Ynet: “Is There a Future for Capitalism?” 

In Europe and in the United States, extreme right-wing movements are becoming stronger, in Asia fundamentalist Islam is growing, Nazism is permeating Russia. Besides that, millions of people are out of work, this trend continues to become stronger, and the world is heading toward war. How far will the world deteriorate? Rav Laitman answers in the spirit of the wisdom of Kabbalah

As a last convulsion before the death of the capitalism of today, it is flourishing and prospering, but underneath the surface, it is dying. The writing is already on the wall: purchasing power and sales capacity are fading, social mobility is frozen, technology is led by robotics, nanotechnology, and three-dimensional printers take over the job market, and the most distinct sign of all is rising unemployment. The UN’s International Labour Organization estimates that world unemployment will grow to at least another 11 million people in the next three years—and this is without considering the data on hidden unemployment and the unemployment of youth throughout the world, which is breaking new records and distort the measurement method.

It is clear that a lack of jobs accompanied by low wages will increase inequality, which is liable to force many of the young to postpone establishing a family unit, buying a home, and raising children and will encourage migration to developed nations. The economic downturn will necessarily cause the spread of the epidemic of depression and an increase in drug use and could lead to hundreds of thousands going out to the streets demanding social justice—a global trend that is growing before us.

In a world that is continuing to change and is in economic uncertainty, the question can be asked: Is it possible to prevent mass exodus to huge violent protests? Who will provide work for the millions of unemployed? And where is the world economy deteriorating to?

Capitalism’s Swan Song

The fundamental assumption of economics is that people aspire to maximal benefit with minimal investment (the assumption of rational expectations) with egoistic motives. Yet people who make a living off each other cannot exist separately from the other individuals in society. Throughout history, human development reflects the development of connections and interdependence between people. Which is to say, economics is just a copy of the system of connections and relationships between us.

According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, these relationships between people are a deeper expression of the egoistic nature of humanity—the desire to receive maximal pleasure and enjoyment even if they are at the expense of others. The egoistic nature began to grow even in the days of the ancient kingdom of Babylon around 3,500 years ago. So the foundations for the methods of trade and the use of money and taxation were laid down for the first time, modern agriculture began to take shape, and alongside them the methods for governance and control and classical processes of order and management were founded for the first time. Civilization, which had been conducted as a single family, was overthrown in an instant. The ego, which drove the Babylonians to develop, transformed them into being more self-centered and separated them. Social changes gave birth to class disparity among the populace and the phenomenon of exploitation of others began.

That created periods of slavery and feudalism one after the other, based on farming, and it split society into two classes in the Middle Ages, the prominent nobles and the serfs. The egoistic nature intensified the search for twisted ways of profiting more, and people began to develop new measures that brought far-reaching changes, known as the Industrial Revolution.

On the eve of the revolution, at the end of the 18^th century in England, the steam engine was invented. For industry, this was a springboard into the modern world. Mechanization and industrialization continued to develop at a dizzying rate and caused the masses to leave their pastoral villages and move to the big cities in England, France, and later, the United States—cities that developed around modern industry.

Marx’s Mistake

The Industrial Revolution gradually changed the nature of society. It led to the development of two new urban classes: The bourgeoisie—the financiers, who were leaders of enterprises, banks, and commerce, and the working class (the proletariat)—simple peasants who came to the city without any education, worked hard for the wealthy and suffered alienating and exploitative employment conditions.

Karl Marx, the father of the doctrine of Socialism, who was exposed to this phenomenon firsthand, described it this way: “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.

“Freeman and slave, patrician and plebeian, lord and serf, guild-master and journeyman, in a word, oppressor and oppressed, stood in constant opposition to one another, carried on an uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight, a fight that each time ended, either in a revolutionary reconstitution of society at large, or in the common ruin of the contending classes” (The Communist Manifesto).

The process of the development of egoism did not stop, and in the middle of the 19^th century it reached the peak of its prosperity and was wearing a new socioeconomic name of capitalism. The Capitalists demanded their own private property and free-market trade. They placed the individual at the center and formed a liberal position to justify their higher status. Their claim that when their income increased and their taxes were lowered, wealth would trickle down and provide benefit for the less established strata, has become a fiction. Marx believed that when the generation of working masses would understand that their situation was very bad, they would join together, make a violent revolution against the bourgeois regime, and bring a new egalitarian society. But he was mistaken about this turning point….

A hundred years ago, Baal HaSulam wrote that, “However, in this last point, where he promises us that after the ruin of the current bourgeois government, a proletariat government will immediately be instated, here is the flaw in his method: The new reality before us denies it. He thought that the proletariat governance would be the subsequent step to the bourgeois governance, and hence determined that by negating the bourgeois government, a proletariat one would be established instantly. Yet, reality proves that the step following the ruin of the present government is that of Nazis or Fascists. Evidently, we are still in the middle stages of human development. Humanity has not yet reached the highest level of the ladder of evolution. Who can assume how many rivers of blood are yet to be shed before humankind reaches the desired level?” (Baal HaSulam, the newspaper, The Nation).

The negative force of the egoistic nature is operating as usual, and if we don’t rein it in, it will lead us into uniting in Neo-Nazi and Fascist movements, a trend that is taking place these days in Europe and the United States. While the economy helps us live, it is not life itself. We must see how we build a new society according to the process of development through which humanity is moving, and as society changes—the economy changes.

While economists and policymakers think about how to reverse the cycle and return capitalism to its golden age, we learn from the wisdom of Kabbalah that this is something that is impossible. Capitalism made its own laws, and the laws of nature are advancing us toward a new socioeconomic model, and it is good that this is so.

A New Human Industry

There is increasing interest in the model of universal income, through which a country pays every citizen a basic subsistence allowance without any connection to his employment status; the detachment of payment from labor, is not accidental. It reflects stuttering attempts to prepare for an era in which there will be no work, but provision will be in abundance thanks to advanced robotics. But the failure of a national referendum to assure an income in Switzerland in the beginning of the year and the opposition to the new model throughout the world reflects a lack of maturity or even a denial of the fact that the entire labor market is standing before dramatic changes that are liable to undercut the entire social-political-economic order, and it is incumbent upon us to prepare in advance to avoid shocks and much human suffering.

How do we do this? Just as today, we are all the product of a formal and informal educational system, that through lectures and the memorization of principles prepare us for life in a capitalistic system, so much so that it seems natural to us. So we just have to adjust the relationships between us, which are the basis for every economic system, to the new reality and the challenges of the 21^st century. Such adjustment can be carried out only by means of mass education. The public-school system was established with the rise of the Industrial Revolution in the 19^th century in order to train workers to work in factory assembly lines. So it is precisely up to us to generate an unprecedented educational revolution in the 21^st century, toward the formation of the new society.

Imagine that every morning we will go out to the workplace where we worked in the past or to a community center close to our homes, and throughout the entire day we sit around a roundtable learning about the global world and human nature and discuss how to strengthen positive relationships between us. The positive power of connection that is created and stabilized between us will balance the negative force of egoism and will provide every person with a life, emotionally and psychologically, in the form of happiness, joy, serenity, and peace. “social unity…can be the source of every joy and success” is what Baal HaSulam wrote in the article, “The Freedom.”

With the help of promoting an ideology calling for unity, we put an end to the problem of increasing unemployment: many workplaces will be created, as I have specified here at length, whose entire purpose will be to generate the power of positive connection. The citizens will not be concerned at all about food, clothing, health, education, housing, cars, entertainment, or any additional social services. The nation will become a big family community; the problems of nationalism and privacy will gradually be solved, and the power of connection will heal the dying human society to its complete recovery. The new social economy will finally release us from the constant concern about making a living, engaging in excessive materialism, and will free our time for personal, social, and spiritual development.

Question: Twenty years ago the UN declared a World Television Day on which it was suggested to change the ordinary programs to programs dedicated to international issues like world peace, security, economic and social development, the expansion of intercultural ventures, etc., what is the TV Day for you?

Answer: I would say that it is a missed opportunity for educating humanity and bringing it to a better and safer place. The opportunity was given, but humanity has not used it because of the great harmful egoism that we all have.

We have turned television into a means of making profit, a hotbed of all kinds of violence, indifference, and cruelty. This is the reason that such days are a reminder of the milestones we have stepped on and ruined.

Question: Did they have good intentions?

Answer: From the start television was merely a means of conveying misinformation and deceiving the public.

Who is at the head of the TV channels? Which group of people? Moguls. There is nothing public about it. Television has not become a source of information, culture, science, or art. The content it presents is only meant to fill the public’s base needs or the lowest common denominator and that’s all.

Question: Do you believe that there can be a different kind of television, an ideal type?

Answer: No, perhaps programs about the animal world and sports channels to some degree. Sports today is a big mess, an empire that celebrates egoism and where everything can be bought and sold. In the past there was a good program about travelling around the world, but today these kind of programs only show where there are restaurants and what type of food people eat in different places, where you can find better food or a better massage, and that’s all.

Question: What would you like a good TV channel to be like?

Answer: The best TV channel should make the next day better than the one that preceded it: safer, more pleasant, brighter, and warmer.

We should constantly make sure that people are friendlier, more united, that they understand the world they are living in, and that they relate to each other properly in order to ensure the future for their children and their grandchildren.

Television doesn’t engage in that, but in principle, it should engage in it 100% of the time.

Question: Are you speaking about education?

Answer: Only! But it should be presented in different forms, even like Hollywood or Russian films, it makes no difference, they can be the same kinds of programs but with a totally different emphasis.

In the News (World Economic Forum): “We are seeing an era of unprecedented change in the way we work. Rapid advancements in the fields of technology, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, and in how we create things, such as robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and biotechnology, will dramatically change the characteristics of the global workforce. …

“According to the Forum’s Future of Jobs report, some jobs will be wiped out, others will be in high demand, but all in all, around 5 million jobs will be lost.

“Already jobs exist now that had never been heard of five years ago: the role of data scientist, which is in huge demand, is one example.

My Comment: The statistics are softening the situation too much. In fact, there will be no need for a workforce at all; at the present time, robotics are being artificially reined in. For example, it would be possible to replace taxis with automatic automobiles. It is absolutely possible to do this.

A robot could replace every person and engage in everything except spiritual work because a robot has no freedom of choice.

Freedom of choice is the possibility of connecting to the next level of consciousness. Only a human can have freedom of choice, only in a particular environment in which a person is educated and prepared for passage to a new level called Adam (Man).

Everything else is on the animate level. So it can be programmed and make life easy mechanically. It is all mechanical.

Question: Will robots push us to the next level?

Answer: Certainly, but in the meantime we don’t want this so we don’t use them.

There are areas in our lives where we would benefit if a person were replaced by a robot, but there is always a negative effect to this as well. For example, if we replace taxi drivers with robots, what will happen to the millions of people who are engaged in this profession?

We need to find out: what should a person do?

We can make our physical lives easier by inventing mechanical “toys,” but at the same time, our lives will become emptier because there would be no intellectual output.

In Disney World in Orlando there is a huge sphere attraction. You sit in a car and ride through the sphere and view their presentation of the future of humanity: everyone flying in helicopters, racing somewhere, at home, everything operates mechanically with the push of a button. And what is it for? After all, a person somehow remains the same.

So we would have completed our existence if it were not for the program of human development activated from above.

Therefore, we have to reach a state that will be very bad for us, and we must understand that the meaning of our development is to unite and to rise to the next level of existence through unity.

The next level is spirituality, outside of the body, outside of all limitations in our world. Let’s hope people will understand this.

“This isn’t Niel’s first try at building a coding school. 42 has been doing well in France. … there are already 2,500 students learning to code right now in Paris. But what makes 42 different?

“42 is nothing like your average university. There’s no teacher and no classroom. Students are expected to learn a set of skills in 3 to 5 years. The school relies on peer reviews, coding projects, internships and gamification. If you stay motivated for 3 to 5 years, you’ll become a good software engineer.”

My Comment: This is a very good method because it reconstructs the human level in a person and makes him self-reliant, responsible, and ready to communicate. The shared assignments build the mutual connection between the students. The students do the assignments together; they do the homework together and are in a mutual connection, which is wonderful.

We are reaching the point where the computer will be the doorway to a world through which a person will be able to attain everything so the old form of education will gradually disappear.

Question: What about the lecturers, the doctors, and the professors?

Answer: Their role will come down to writing books, programs, assignments, exams, workshops, etc. There is no need for lectures as the academic institutions will switch to self-learning methods.

Question: What I find most striking in this process is that the students check each other’s assignments. What impact will this have?

Answer: Certainly this will oblige them to be integrated, it will tighten the connections between them and will bring them together—not detaching and disconnecting them as working on a computer usually is.

Eventually we have to discover the need for contact and a tight connection with each other. Later, we will discover that every essential area in life, in society, in the economy, in commerce, etc.—everything relies only on the right mutual connection between people.

The right connection, just like in technology, is based on the fact that plus and minus connect through a resistor between them, where positive energy is released. I am sure that eventually everyone will discover this. Our role as Kabbalists is to explain that this is the correct law of connection of all the positive and negative attributes people have, of all the views and inclinations in society, and that it is all necessary to create the right connection between us. This is the only way humanity will safely ascend to the next level of its evolution, to spirituality.

“This in turn will accelerate the already widening economic inequality around the world. The internet and the platforms that it makes possible allow very small groups of individuals to make enormous profits while employing very few people. This is inevitable, it is progress, but it is also socially destructive.

“We need to put this alongside the financial crash, which brought home to people that a very few individuals working in the financial sector can accrue huge rewards and that the rest of us underwrite that success and pick up the bill when their greed leads us astray. So taken together we are living in a world of widening, not diminishing, financial inequality, in which many people can see not just their standard of living, but their ability to earn a living at all, disappearing. It is no wonder then that they are searching for a new deal, which Trump and Brexit might have appeared to represent. …

“For me, the really concerning aspect of this is that now, more than at any time in our history, our species needs to work together. We face awesome environmental challenges: climate change, food production, overpopulation, the decimation of other species, epidemic disease, acidification of the oceans.

“Together, they are a reminder that we are at the most dangerous moment in the development of humanity. We now have the technology to destroy the planet on which we live, but have not yet developed the ability to escape it. …

“To do that, we need to break down, not build up, barriers within and between nations. If we are to stand a chance of doing that, the world’s leaders need to acknowledge that they have failed and are failing the many. With resources increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, we are going to have to learn to share far more than at present.”

My Comment: Many already see the obvious truth that all the predictions of Marx are actually being realized in our time. Nobody sees the solution to the problem because the solution is found outside of our nature: recognition and control over egoism, not within it, but above it, by transcending it. This is a logical continuation of our development, but we don’t see it because we only understand and think about everything within egoism.

Question: In recent years a lot has been said and written about the new generation born from 1996-2000 called “Generation Z.”

This is the first generation that was born in the Internet era. They don’t divide the world into the digital and the real, their life flows smoothly to the screen and back. They have developed immunity to advertising, they just don’t notice it.

They learned “arm in arm” with technologies used to crisscross the study of subjects; they are used to thinking globally because they instantly receive information from all around the world. They value security because they grew up in the era of terrorist attacks and wars. They are going to work a lot and earn a lot. They don’t want to destroy the system but slowly and surely are going to make the world better.

What do you think about this generation that was born in the Internet era?

Answer: Our world is only filling the digital field for them. Whatever fits the smartphone screen exists for them and everything else doesn’t. Their way of thinking and their attitude toward life changes accordingly. The most important thing for them is what is displayed on the small screen.

Question: But this phenomenon hasn’t just appeared, there must be some kind of plan?

Answer: The plan is very simple: to give people the possibility of unlimited global communication as much as possible, without division into languages, continents, and countries. They are using this and living within it.

They think that through this technology, which is inextricably linked with their body, they will be able to fill themselves. Yet all this means nothing. They will still find that their hands remain empty and all that they truly need is human contact, human connection.

Question: Will it be easier for them to achieve the feeling that they are inside the system?

Answer: Yes, but they need to discover that this system is filled with absolute emptiness. If the previous generations had some ideals to achieve special knowledge, goals, realizations, and discoveries, for them it’s business in the form of computerized “toys.” I think that by 2025 Generation Z will end.

The next generation, with the help of these gadgets, will be in contact with each other in order to be interconnected, because through this they will be able to reach union with nature and reveal it.

Today smartphones in the hands of youth are a goal for them and for the next generation they will become the means for connection, not between mobile devices, but specifically between people who will discover a new level of existence. This generation will be beyond the boundaries of the alphabet; after all, “Z” is the last letter in it. Baal HaSulam wrote about this and he called them the “Last Generation.”

Question: How will the wisdom of Kabbalah be revealed to them?

Answer: The wisdom of Kabbalah will be revealed to them as the emptiness in the world they are living in and as an opportunity for the true fulfillment. But this will be only when the technology in their hands will be used not as a goal but as means for attaining connection and fulfillment between people.

Question: But the degrees are reduced all the time, the life of the generations becomes shorter and shorter. How do you determine the life of the last generation?

Answer: The last generation, focused only on the union between people and revelation in their unity, the next level of existence, the next world, will exit the boundaries of time.

They will feel themselves outside of time, space, and limitations. Gradually, the levels of the inanimate, animate, and vegetative nature will come out of us, evaporate, and we will stay only within our sensations.

“That’s according to Oxfam, whose new report, A Europe for the Few, Not the Many, warns that the excessive influence of wealthy individuals, corporations, and interest groups on policy-making is exacerbating poverty and inequality across the continent. …

“Meanwhile, between 2009 and 2013, the number of Europeans living without enough money to heat their homes or cope with unforeseen expenses, a state known as ‘severe material deprivation,’ rose by 7.5 million to 50 million people. These are among the 123 million people—almost a quarter of the European Union’s population—at risk of living in poverty. …

“Poverty in the EU is not an issue of scarcity during the crisis, but a problem of how wealth is distributed,” said Isabel Ortiz, director of social protection at the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO), in her introduction to the Oxfam report.”

(VestiFinance): “Faced with growing inequalities and unemployment above 10%, Europe plans to introduce a single base income, which guarantees to all people, regardless of work, the ability to meet basic needs, says Christopher Dembik. …

“In 2016, France will also address the issue of providing basic income throughout the population and limiting the maximum wage to cope with inequality and to achieve more balanced growth.

“In a more egalitarian society with other values, the demand for luxury goods fell sharply. Consumers now choose mass produced products and high technology. The fall in demand in Europe and the economic slowdown in developing countries, particularly in China, led to a collapse in the luxury segment.”

My Comment: Gradually, the uniform provision of the basic necessities to the entire population is emerging, as Baal HaSulam wrote about in the beginning of the last century.

He was criticized for saying this and accused of being a communist. But today, all of Europe is beginning to introduce a system of providing the population with necessities. It could be that even without a great war, but through a continuation of the crisis, people will become wiser and life will force us to redesign society and ourselves.

Question: What exactly is the work to produce a man of the future?

Answer: Creating a man of the future is a real art, a generator of the upper force. There are power plants that produce electricity, and this will be a plant that produces the power of connection.

And it not only supplies energy to us, but also organizes our mind and the relationships between us. This is a plant for receiving a universal force. The force of connection is the only thing we require in our time.

Through our unity we awaken the positive force that connects us and corrects our relationships in the family, society, and between countries. This is absolutely necessary for us. Do you know how much we spend on defense?

Of course, if we stop producing weapons, then 99% of the population will be unemployed. But at the same time, society will have full abundance, peace, and joy. Let’s do a simple thing: make people happy by finding the positive force inside our unity!

Humanity has reached a special stage of its evolution by finishing the material development in this world. We don’t need to worry about it anymore. To the contrary, if we continue to think about it, it will bury us; this is already obvious. It turns out that now we have to think only about the development of a person and nothing else.

There still are neo-liberals, such as Hillary Clinton, who think that it is possible to continue advancing the old way and each one in the elite can earn a few more billion. But it is already clear that this path leads to a dead end.

Question: The elite want to calm people with drugs in order to remain in power. And what do you propose?

Answer: It’s not about putting people to sleep; on the contrary, for the man of the future we don’t need people disconnected from reality, but connected to it as much as possible. People must work on their connections and learn who “A Man” is and how in the connection between people a new positive force that we need so much is revealed.

We cultivate it like a flower that grows out of the ground. This is how we must reveal the positive forces inside our connections that will help human society develop. We don’t need to worry about anything other than our connection. We’ve already tested and tried all other ways. The previous development gives us nothing apart from further enrichment of the elite and the impoverishment of the masses.

In any case, the old world is falling apart in both Europe and America. The previous life won’t come back; we need to look a bit further ahead in the future. If instead of Trump, Hillary Clinton were elected, she would continue to destroy America and the whole world. Obama’s administration was very successful in this in his two terms. And of course, this wouldn’t have ended well in any case.

As a result of the election, the American people are split into two parts; half is suffering and are opposed to the second half. The elite consist of the few rare individuals, the tip of the second half, and the rest are simply confused.

People who understand the current state of the world see that it is in crisis, and neither Hillary nor Obama could resolve it. The direction they selected is absolutely wrong. This left Sanders or Trump. The same is true for Europe and any other place in the world. Sander’s politics is extremely left, while Trump’s is quite to the right.

The new American industry will produce people of the future. There are around a hundred million unemployed in America today so why not start this work with them? It will be a bloodless revolution. If Trump is capable of organizing this work, the country will no longer be split into two camps. Thus, he will attract many allies to his side.

There is no point wasting energy trying to fix the US economy because it is impossible to bring back factories that were moved to China thirty years ago. There is no need for them for America or for the world. At present, China already has moved those factories to India.

Americans must start producing a new type of commodity, the only special products that are required worldwide, namely to produce people. This production is due to the fact that unemployed people will get jobs: they will start learning to unite.

After few months of such studies, each one will receive strong new impressions regarding what a correct “human” and a correct human society are. We need to continue this way. After all, a person has nothing else to do in this life other than generate an upper force, the most powerful force in the world that is capable of performing miracles in all of nature. All of this depends only on the connection between people.

Therefore, we shouldn’t think that this production doesn’t produce goods. We will generate a product and will be able to measure the force produced by us, the power of the connection we received and the success achieved through it that will increase day by day.

We can evaluate them according to the level of the desire, connection, restriction, and Masach (screen). These characteristics are much more accurate than our current economy with its methods of assessing work: efforts invested and results received.

There is no doubt that in this way we will achieve unlimited development. We just need to explain it to people, and, first of all, to leaders such as Trump.

There is no alternative because it is estimated that around seventy to eighty percent of the working population will be out of work in the next few years, no matter how hard we resist the introduction of robotics and automated systems. The concept of a person working to ensure his material existence is already outdated. Marx wrote about it almost two hundred years ago.

Technology has reached a level of development where ten people are able to grow crops for ten million, and others will produce the special force that stabilizes all of society and brings it to an optimal form where the ten people that are capable now of serving ten million will be able to serve ten billion.

We receive a blessing from above for everything that we do. In addition, we are beginning to understand to what extent we need this. We realize that we should confine ourselves to rational consumption in order not to poison the environment. We are learning to unite human society and, by this, to save energy and money and eliminate suffering, wars, and terrorism.

We don’t need to go to the terrorists and conduct lectures for them. Through attracting the common Light, the common force, we calm down all of the disturbances. It is not necessary to deal partiicularly with Pakistan or ISIS. If we take care of the common correction, all of these hot spots will suddenly calm down. Terrorists will suddenly feel that they should treat people with more kindness.
