“What Are the Benefits of Existential Questions?” (Times of Israel)

Michael Laitman on the Times of Israel: “What Are the Benefits of Existential Questions?

A group of disciples once asked their sage: “What happens after death?” The sage responded with silence. The disciples persisted, “Is there life after death or not?” The sage finally replied, “Is there life before death? That is the question.”

This is a usual response that urges us to contemplate our current existence—whether it is truly life or a form of living death.

From a corporeal standpoint, life is defined by the existence of protein matter. Whether it is the pain of being pinched or the pleasure of savoring delicious food, such experiences are part and parcel of life as protein matter.

There is, however, a higher plane of existence beyond the corporeal, where our non-corporeal matter exists. Attaining such a level requires rising above our self-serving nature and embracing the opposite altruistic non-corporeal state. If we reach such a state, then we feel true life.

We attain that non-corporeal, spiritual state when we transition from being receivers, which is our protein existence, to becoming givers at the level of our intentions. That transformation aligns with life’s true definition—one centered on giving to everyone and everything, and ultimately, to the source force of our lives: the quality of love and bestowal that we call “the Creator.”

When this existential inquiry about what happens beyond our lives awakens, we should avoid escaping from it in the myriad transient pleasures on offer in our corporeal world. Instead, we should view it as a wondrous opportunity that we can seize and develop into a whole new perception and sensation of reality. It might hurt at first, but if it gets to us, then it is a sign that we can also get to its core—and there, we can discover a whole new spiritual world of eternity and perfection.

The Shortest Path to the Correction of the Soul

209We should read the articles of Rabash slowly and thoughtfully because they contain all the actions that we need to perform in our inner work, all the sensations that we need to experience, and all the aspirations that need to be directed toward our connection.

I remember how Rabash read those articles to me when we traveled together to Tiberius. He ran his finger along the lines reading word by word. Even though our thoughts tend to run ahead and resist such a slow pace, we must train ourselves to concentrate on each word and try to absorb it.

Rabash attached great importance to every word written in these articles. If I missed a word in the text, he immediately noticed it. After the text was written, it became sacred to him and no changes were allowed in it.

When we now read the articles of Rabash together, one by one, they must enter into all our sensations, into every soul, into every person, and create such an internal order in them that during this life and many reincarnations they would not want to rebuild it in a new way.

Gradually, these articles will begin to materialize in us more and more, and we will understand them better and perceive them more and more sensually. They are the ones that will lead us to correction.

Rabash wrote these articles from his inner feeling and wanted them to awaken our souls exactly in accordance with his stencil. Of course, there are many paths leading to the Creator. But if a person tries to enter spirituality without this internal reformatting with the help of the articles of Rabash, then it will be a much more difficult and long path.

The path that Rabash paved for us is the shortest way that leads a person to the demand to correct his soul.

Rethink the Path

921Question: What kind of help does a person get if he starts his day over?

Answer: He gets what he needs for further advancement. It does not matter if he starts the day over or took a break during the day.

Question: What does it mean to start all over again? What am I leaving behind, or what do I begin the day with?

Answer: You think you have done something entirely wrong and start to rethink your path.

Get Out of a Dead State

938.03Question: How do you get out of this dead state when you seem to have been thrown out of the general desire?

Answer: Pray, ask, and cling to the group, to the friends, with all parts of the body.

Question: So you can cling not only to the ten, but also to a wider environment?

Answer: It is possible to cling to a wider environment, but in the ten it is mandatory.

Question: But the wider, the easier it is?

Answer: I think you will get lost there. It is best to start in the ten.

The Main Thing Is the Work in Thoughts

198Question: How can one remain a part of society, work, serve in the army, have a family, and on the other hand, be in a group of people developing altruistic values?

How can you be connected with everyone but isolated in your thoughts? Is there any methodology or advice?

Answer: Perhaps nothing special is needed here. You have to study, work, have a family, try to provide for yourself and your children like everyone else in this world. Kabbalists also work and do the same things as others: they serve in the army, take care of their family, and so on.

But at the same time, they are engaged in Kabbalah and begin to understand why everything is arranged around us in this way, what the forces of nature want from us, where we are headed, and what we are developing toward. The science of Kabbalah is given so one can understand our world better.

Therefore, the main job of a person studying Kabbalah is work in thoughts. After all, how long can he be in a group of like-minded people? An hour or two a day. At best, attend the lesson. The rest of the time he is alone with himself.

Above All the Desires of the World

528.02Question: It is said that one must have desires elevated above all the desires of the world. And at the same time, we are taught to put aside our desires and follow the aspirations of our friends. What should I do? Should I pay more attention to my desire or my friend’s?

Answer: First of all, you need to pay attention to your desires, check how different they are from the desires of the ten in order to get closer to them. And if your desires coincide with the desires of the ten, you raise them together to the Creator. And then you check how much they coincide with the desires of the Creator.

Question: How do I check if they coincide?

Answer: You will feel it inside you.

Accept Support from Faith

546.02And there should be fear with this Torah, meaning he should see that he does not receive any support or assistance from the Torah, but from faith (Baal HaSulam, Shamati 215 “Concerning Faith”).

The point is that it is necessary to receive support from faith and not reason. Reason is Daat, and faith is Emuna. Therefore, we must go in such a way as to be above reason all the time.

To receive support from faith means to rely on the fact that with my reason I will not be able to get above what I get in faith.

Question: Why should one accept good as a warning and fear receiving help from the Torah?

Answer: Move away from egoistic desire and strive only for the similarity of form with the Creator.

Replenishment with the Light

276.02Question: We tune into the light all the time. How can we feel the Creator and His attitude toward us through it?

Answer: Penetrate this light, try to absorb it into all of you together, and thus you will find a connection with the Creator.

Cling to what the Creator reveals, absorb it into yourself, and advance further.

There’s No Need to Calculate Anything

556Every time he feels that distance to a greater extent than he thought, it causes him no contention (Baal HaSulam, Shamati 172 “The Matter of Preventions and Delays“).

Question: Should we calculate the distance from the Creator in our work?

Answer: There is no need to calculate anything. In any state you should always work toward coming closer to the Creator.

If you all work together and support each other, you will always have the right aspiration to the Creator.
