A Female Ally

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Should women inspire the men?

Answer: Women can inspire men better than anyone else. Imagine that your wife is impressed by you and keeps saying: “You are so clever, so handsome, so special! I look at other men and see that you are much stronger and better than them!” If a woman felt that way about you, you would immediately run home and sit by her like a little boy listening to everything that she says. This is what men are like.

Women can manipulate men anyway they like. If a woman is clever, if she aims at the goal and understands what she does it for, I will only be grateful to her just for starting to work on my nature. I will not brag and be proud of being a “macho.” On the contrary, I will be totally honest with her: “The ego is my nature, it is a contemptible zero! Help me exit it! Let’s resist it and change it together. Then we will do the same with you.”

This is where we should annul ourselves. Let’s be our own psychologists a little and look at ourselves from the side. This is the only way we can exit this state. We also try to do the same thing in the group, by putting ourselves above it and then below it so that it will impress us.

We have to do the same thing in the family, by constantly ascending and descending one with regards to the other, but what for? In order to attain the upper goal! So I don’t care about the relations with the family as long as they are aimed correctly and are set on the goal. A woman is your major assistant, she knows you better than anyone else, so her right attitude towards you can help you exit your nature quickly.

We should have special courses for teaching married couples about the right mutual relations and how to change people’s egoistic nature. You will see how you will be able to positively influence your kids afterwards. They will be good, kind, disciplined, and wise. We should take advantage of such opportunities. The main thing is to be more mature. The importance of the goal justifies everything.

We know that in the past Kabbalists were actually happy when they had bitter, angry wives. But our wives are not angry or bitter. They are following the spiritual path with us, helping us, and advising us as to how we should work with our ego and use it for the right cause.

We need to understand that we are connected only for this common goal which determines our relationships, and that we do everything to attain it. This means that I don’t want to play with your ego in any way; I don’t want to use it in order to stab you, no! We should behave wisely, gently, and tactfully with regards to one another to the extent that we can use ourselves and our partner correctly.

This is what we should learn. You cannot imagine what a great tool this is for our correction. We can change our planet with it! To be honest, you don’t need anyone but a female ally. You need the group only in order to connect the two of you correctly.

In any case, during the transition period there are quite a few families in which the partners are moving in different directions. In that case a person needs a group. By the way, a group of women is very serious support with regards to the men’s group. Take this seriously. Progressing through the right methods of interaction, you will see how much it helps you.

The Force Of Envy Is Not Limited By Time And Space

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam “Introduction to the Book, Panim Meirot uMasbirot”

The inclination for envy elicits the sages from among them, as our sages said, “Author’s envy increases wisdom.” The strong-willed, with the inclination for envy, excel in acquiring wisdom and knowledge. It is like the speaking degree in the whole of reality, in which the operating force is not limited by time and place, but is collective and encompasses every item in the world, throughout all times.

Also, it is the nature of the fire of envy to be general, encompassing all times and the whole reality. This is because it is the conduct of envy: if one had not seen the object in one’s friend’s possession, the desire for it would not have awakened in one at all.

The force of envy is the most powerful force, particularly in the workers of the Creator and a little less in ordinary people. If it is possible to say that ordinary people have envy in the same way we mean.

It is said that, “Author’s envy increases wisdom”; that is, this is the only force that acts, pushes, and pulls a person forward. It is a very useful force. That is why, we need to show each other how much we invest in the group, try to love friends, to exaggerate good examples, and not be afraid that you may appear immodest and not righteous.

You should not present yourself as a hidden righteous. On the contrary, your demonstrative example of showing your devotion, enthusiasm greatly benefits your friends. Understanding this, the group already shows the principle of “love they neighbor as yourself.” Indeed, I am interested in seeing that others are better than me!

Usually, our egoism wants to belittle everyone; even if I am absolutely nothing, at least others are even less than me. Here, on the contrary, I want to see others higher than me. Although this is against my egoism and is unpleasant, I begin to criticize myself—but it is for the good of my advancement.

Thus we show examples to young children, “Look at this boy, what he can do! Try to do the same”! It is natural for a child to learn from others’ examples. It is the same in spiritual development: We need to show each other a good example and deliberately stir up envy.

In the outside world, people love that others envy them and suffer, seeing them so successful, rich, and powerful. But here, it is opposite, by allowing others to see me as strong and goal-oriented, I help them because I want them to be better than me. Thus, I raise the group according to the principle, “The one who chooses a better environment is rewarded with success and advancement.”

We need to use this means, the lever, the fire of envy that burns us, with the utmost cunning, trying to awaken good envy in the friends. We need not only play in relation with each other, but also to talk about this, to learn from all the forms, which others show, and become like them and even better. Then the group will become stronger, grow, and move forward.

Now It’s Your Turn To Be King And To Rule

Dr. Michael LaitmanAll changes occur in the desire to receive while the Upper Light is in a state of absolute rest. At the same time, we know that everything comes from Above and that there is none else besides Him, the Creator, and that He alone decides and acts. So how can it be that one time we say that everything is determined by the Light and another time that everything depends on the vessel, on our efforts, on the desire, on our exertion, and our work?

We can see it in two ways: from the perspective of the Light or from the perspective of the desire. But it’s clear that all the attributes and the software that are part of the Light operate in a concealed manner on the desire and activate it. This is called the “force of the operator on the operated.”

We can assess the Light that operates the desire according to its actions in the desire. This means that all our revelations start from the vessel, from the desire. I don’t reveal the Creator who operates on me, but rather, within my vessels, I discover the phenomena by which I guess that He operates inside me.

The Light is always there and I only discover its influence. Then it seems that my desires are full and that they begin to illuminate like sparkling Lights, but they only reveal the Light that is already in them. So it’s better to look at the vessels from the side, since it helps us focus on the work correctly and not wait for something to come from Above from the Light.

The Upper Light doesn’t stop its illumination on the lower even for a moment. This means that its influence doesn’t change because it’s good and benevolent for all. The force doesn’t change, but only the vessels do under the influence of this force. I must say so since it obliges me to take care of my vessels, to think about the connection with the friends, and to absorb additional spiritual deficiencies from them.

Thanks to the additional deficiency that I receive from the connection, by the greater importance of the goal, I demand the Light! I don’t ask it to illuminate on me more, but rather to open up my desire, and then the Light can influence me more.

My desire opens up and the Light remains the same. This is a significant difference in approach. Do we just pray and ask for mercy or do we know that everything depends on our work? Our desire is a result of our work and of the connection between us. This is how we seem to operate the Light, but, in fact, we only open the channels in our desire to receive in which the Light can be revealed.

If I speak from the perspective of the vessels, I oblige myself to constantly worry about them. I don’t wait for the Light to change, and I don’t shed a tear when it doesn’t operate on me and doesn’t fill me, and I don’t blame it for what it did to me and to the whole world in the past. This means that I don’t see the Light as responsible for everything as people commonly do when they make a mistake. After all, nothing depends on the Light because “He has given a law that cannot be broken.” He has given a person everything, like a scepter, so that he will be king and rule. So everything depends only on me and there is no one else I can count on.

Therefore, we must go out to disseminate and support the group and not be materialists and mystics who count on some hidden upper force. This is the great difference between the different religions and Kabbalah, that is, between beliefs and science. In Kabbalah all the tools are in our hands since we know that our desire determines everything and that the Creator doesn’t decide anything; He actually gives us full control.

So why do Kabbalists say that everything depends on the Creator? If we discover that everything is up to us, we will discover that everything is indeed up to Him, according to the work that we do. Therefore, it says, “I have exerted and I have found, believe!” But this is actually something the world isn’t ready to accept. Only by our efforts can we reach anything, and otherwise we can keep on praying forever. At the same time we say, “if only one could pray all day.” This means that we should reach a deficiency in our prayer that will be constantly renewed thanks to our work on the connection between us. So the prayer is the work of the heart, above our desire. This is a critical point and it is the foundation of all the spiritual work. This is the bone of contention that distinguishes the wisdom of Kabbalah from all the other beliefs.

A Magnifying Glass For The Upper Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What does it mean to try to connect while reading The Book of Zohar?

Answer: Reading The Zohar is the time when you shouldn’t use your mind but your soul. Now you have to think about how we should connect in order to be like a magnifying glass by which we draw the sun rays in order to light something that is under the glass.

How can we concentrate and focus on this point? If we do, we will feel the Light that influences us going through us, illuminating our desire to receive and changing it. Then the desire will restrict itself, acquire a Masach (screen) and will begin to work.

Our whole work is done by this magnifying glass that is becoming more powerful. Our work is in the growing concentration of the group in quantity and quality so that a stronger Light will come and bring us to a more substantial and more qualitative connection. Then we will discover the spiritual state in the connection between us. What we discover is called the spiritual world.

Question: Do I build this magnifying glass by my efforts or is it created by everyone’s efforts?

Answer: By all our efforts. The magnifying glass itself isn’t important. What’s important is the central point in the magnifying glass, in which all the rays of Light connect and descend through it.

Question: How do we know that all our efforts are successful?

Answer: According to the result: You you will receive the desired change, as it says: “I labored and I found.” The exertion is in the connection between us, in one heart and in mutual guarantee, and the finding is when we discover between us the first attribute of bestowal called the first spiritual level.

Question: What will change in me after this change?

Answer: You will not only want to bestow but will also be able to bestow.

It Is Time To Build An Incubator

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What should I do if I am not built for this work? I have engaged in this work for so long and I have the desire to escape from it all the time.

Answer: You’re still not doing anything. You think that you engage in internal work and that you are advancing, but the advancement is assessed in regard to one’s connection to the group. Now let’s see if you are under the influence of this environment, that you have determined this, and they don’t just impress you automatically.

When you come to the group, it naturally influences you whether you want it or not. You are like a small child who hasn’t learned anything yet. You were just born, and you are taken care of like a baby: diapers, milk, etc. You grow and advance completely unaware that you are totally in the arms of the upper.

But later you are required to participate and connect to your environment: at least to smile at your mother, to reach out to her, to learn something. This means that you must interact with the environment. Do you participate with the environment in anyway, at least like a baby? Do you smile at it? Do you wave your arms and legs with joy like to your mother, when the group approaches?

Our society has to be like a caring mother, or like an incubator in which a person can mature very quickly on the path of “I shall hasten it” and reach the end of correction. There is no other way.

Question: But what can keep me in the group? What if they throw me out?

Answer: We don’t throw anyone out of the group. Even if your egg has not cracked but just lays in the corner of the incubator its whole life. Only if it stinks and begins to spoil and poison our society will we have to throw you out. But as long as you are passive, it isn’t that bad. Even if you are considered a burden on society, we are ready to carry you on our back. Only a person who intends harm has no place among us; everyone else does.

People leave because they don’t listen to what they are told: that spiritual fulfillment is possible only though connection. This connection has to be in the form of an incubator that warms us. Rather than the Creator, the group has to be the good and benevolent for a person. A person cannot advance without an environment, without a group. There is no other way, you either do so or you don’t.

Also there is a good chance for success as there are new opportunities now that no other generation before us had, not since the beginning of humanity in this world. Today we can begin with massive, open dissemination, unlike Baal HaSulam who started to bring people closer very carefully, one by one, mainly from the Orthodox environment, although there were several secular people among his students.

Today we can open the wisdom for all. This means that it is time to build an incubator for the small circle, for the wider circle, and for the whole world. It is our duty to build it. We are the ones who have received the awakening for the Creator, and so we have to build the incubator for all of humanity. This means that we should be the transition, a kingdom of priests.

A Science Of Humble Hearts

Dr. Michael LaitmanThroughout generations, those who were engaged in the internal part of the Torah were going through self-transformation; they worked for the sake of the Creator and attained spirituality. It’s impossible to attain Him alone except for special cases that occur to those who are granted revelation from Above for a special purpose. That’s why Kabbalists had to always stay connected with their friends, as one man with one heart, in mutual guarantee.

It was always done “in humility.” Even though each worked in unity for the sake of their friends, they never demonstrated this outwardly. Most of the time, it was the other way around; they ostentatiously displayed disregard for each other and towards their internal work as it was among the Kabbalists of Kotzk. They acted this way to conceal the true aspiration of their hearts, and thus enable them to apply efforts and advance.

There were other groups who studied, prayed, and discussed things together, for example, Ramchal’s students. But still, they were careful in disclosing their hearts to each other to prevent others, even their friends, from seizing their internal desires of the heart. After all, they were burning with such powerful intention to the goal that nobody had the strength to express it outwardly in words and everybody was entirely focused on their internal sensations.

Only after many years, closer to our time, precisely since the Ari and then Baal Shem Tov and the Magid from Mezeritch, when the movement for the use of Kabbalah in large groups (Hasidism) emerged, they started to gradually speak more about the internal work.

So we came to our time when we can talk about it more openly, not only among us, but even explaining the principles of spiritual work to the general public to wake up the hearts of many for spiritual work.

At the same time, we have to protect ourselves. Protection is made through intentions: The more our hearts are tuned to the internal wave, the more we become immersed in it and won’t seek to vent our hearts’ hidden aspirations.

What Are We Afraid Of?

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Disclosing a Portion, Covering Two”: The secrets of the Torah are revealed only to those who fear His Name, who keep His Glory with their hearts and souls…

Question: Is there a connection between our fears and the trepidation in front of the Creator?

Answer: Our personal fears and the trepidation in front of the Creator are connected through the chain of cause and effect.

The Creator sends corporeal afflictions to us in this material life; all of them are in essence fears. We are afraid of not having something, of not being able to provide for our existence; we worry about our children’s future, etc. Later, due to our studies and under the influence of the Light that Reforms, we gradually rise above our earthly fears and approach a transitional step where we replace the fears of this world with spiritual fear.

We advance due to our material fears; it happens when the time comes. It is a result of our development. This is how all of humanity progresses. However, we tend to advance with the help of the second type of fear. How can we obtain it? How can we start fearing that we won’t be able to please the Creator?

Those whose souls are able to achieve the second kind of fear come to the group and begin advancing. They need to change their individual fears and start worrying whether they are able to help the group, their friends, and through them, the Creator. “I don’t know Him now, but if I get along with my friends, I will definitely get along with Him too.” If people are ready, they are concerned about their group, the general public, and dissemination. They are afraid of whether they are able to aspire to go outside of their borders, beyond their personal interests. If we implement the possibility that is given to us in this world, if we manage to form the format that will eventually let us enter the spiritual realm, it means that we are advancing

Concealed Because It Is Not Needed

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Disclosing a Portion, Covering Two”: “There are three parts to the secrets of the Torah. Each part has its own reason for being concealed.

Unnecessary: This means that no benefit will stem from its disclosing. Of course, this is not such a great loss because there is only the issue of the cleanness of the mind here, to warn of those actions defined as “so what,” meaning so what if I did this, there is no harm in it.

But you should know that, in the eyes of the sages, the “so what” is considered the worst corruptor. This is because all the destructors in the world, those that have been and those that will be, are the “so what” kind of people. This means that they occupy themselves and others in needless things.

This prohibition applies not to the wisdom of Kabbalah per se, but rather to those people who take advantage of this wisdom with bad intentions, thus confusing others instead of leading them to the goal.

Our goal is the revelation of the Creator in this world by correcting desires and bringing them to the equivalence of properties. However, some people try using Kabbalah incorrectly: they reduce it to dry scholasticism, “peddling” amulets and other “miraculous remedies” for sale, etc.

Therefore it is necessary to protect the wisdom of Kabbalah and safeguard people from confusion by either keeping this wisdom a secret for a certain period of time or by revealing its authentic essence when the time comes without deviating and inch from the goal.

This is why there is a method that is defined as an “absence of need.” After all, in order to maintain maximum purity, people have to know only a part of the wisdom that is really essential for their self-correction and for their further advancement towards the Goal of the creation. One should not know more than this.

Therefore, people should receive precise guidance and the exact amount of knowledge that has to be given to them in a correct form, the right system and adequate presentation so that they know and follow only this direction without deviating even an inch from the goal.

The unnecessary part is not only about what’s written in the sources; nobody understands what’s written there anyway. The emphasis here should be given to the method of studies, to the teacher and students, to the character and organization of the learning process, to each of its facets. There is a huge complex of conditions that form a spiritual man. For that, as in an incubator, there have to be ideal conditions maintained including numerous essential factors; if people do not violate the rules and stay under their impact, they will correctly advance.

Otherwise people just follow their nature and spin in different directions instead of going straight forward…

By Filling Circles, We Fill the Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanDesires that were created by the Light are equivalent to the Light, but they are of the opposite nature as reverse imprints. But their shape is identical to the shape of the Light, and therefore they are called “round.” By no means is it about a physical shape; rather, it is about their properties.

The same way the Light that constantly bestows without limits in all directions and brings good to everybody without exception—to the sinners and the righteous, to all desires in equal shares—the desires represent smooth circles made by the Light.

The circles differ from each other: a small desire or a big one, a good or a bad. But the difference between them is examined only by a “line,” direct desires that appear after the first restriction (Tzimzum Aleph) and have screens.

“A line” is a creation. “Round vessels” do not yet feel as a creation and are completely under the power of the Light. A line is a reaction of the creation, its work, its attitude to “round desires”, i.e., to what was made by the Creator.

The Creator made the world in the shape of circles, because His attitude to the world is “round,” absolutely equal. The creation’s attitude, that is, the attitude of the desire that has a screen and the reflected Light and aspires to become similar to the Creator, is a line within which the creation judges and evaluates “round” desires. The creation is not willing to remain in the state created by the Creator, in the round desire to be pleased. It wants to determine its attitude to the Creator itself, that is, to determine the desire on its own and then through it aspire to the Creator.

The creation wants to relate to the Creator through a line, but its goal is to make the line similar to a circle, so that the love and bestowal of the creation is infinite and as powerful as the Creator’s love to the creation, and even bigger! It means that the creation works with its desires only under the protection of the intention that determines to what extent the desire can be used.

The ultimate  goal is to achieve such a huge intention that it will allow the creation to bestow endlessly, to the complete wholeness of the desire. Then, the Creator and the creation, as the host and the guest, will reach complete equivalence that is called adhesion.

Round vessels (igulim) do not touch each other but connect only through direct vessels (yosher), through a line (kav),  a thin tube. The thin tube shares with the spheres and fulfills them; this is its role. The spheres express the Creator’s attitude to the creation as that of a host to a guest. A line is the creation’s “attitude.”

A line penetrates the spheres and goes through them. A sphere is unlimited desires that belong to the integrated system. That’s why they are so important for us today in this contemporary world.  Now, we begin sensing the pressure of the round vessels (igulim.) This is a problem because we want everything to be in accordance with our “straight” (yosher) benefit: I give you, and you give me; everything is egoistically straightforward in the form of “buying and selling.”

A circle means that you are open to all. The circles start approaching us; it means that the Creator is getting ready to reveal Himself in this world. We feel bad; we are going through a crisis because we have not achieved sufficient connection between the circles. We have to turn into a straight channel that will connect all spheres. Otherwise, the system around us will start to die; we, like cancer, kill it. It happens because we don’t make the “pipes,” the direct arteries between the spheres.

This is a very practical, thing. Each one of us has to become a “master installer.” Besides having the usual water pipes around, there is artform called “installation.”

Eventually, pipes have to grow so big, wide, and numerous that they will connect even the smallest spheres, and will eventually replace them. Instead of circles, there will be lines. The circles were made by the Creator as a manifestation of His attitude to us.  On our part, we have to bestow to Him through a line. Therefore, the lines have to replace circles and fill them. By filling circles, we fill the Creator!

Changing Your Place Brings About A Change Of Luck

Dr. Michael LaitmanRabash, letter 78: Until now we haven’t engaged in constructing buildings and in things that are related to publicity. This isn’t our way, and our only goal is to disseminate the wisdom of the fear of Heaven and God’s work among people who support us and especially the wisdom of Kabbalah and the concealed wisdom for the humble who deserve it.

Yet in this generation, when the wisdom is poor and despised and every city is solidly built, but God’s city is humiliated to the lowest possible place, it is the time of the coming of the Messiah as the gracious know.

Therefore, I have accepted the request of our supporters who wish to expand our residence and to build a small temple for the wisdom and the prayer in the name of my father and teacher, a place where its springs will stem from and will spread outwards, and the wisdom will sing in public, and whoever wishes to know the Creator and obtain the necessary correction and training will come.

I appeal to all our brothers, the children of Israel, in whom the spirit of the Creator lives and who regret the exile of Divinity, to help us in this building and great work. And because of this we will all be rewarded with complete redemption, as it says in The Zohar, “And so the children of Israel will come out of exile.”

I hope for redemption of the total glorification of the Torah.

Your friend in heart and soul.

Today we start the regular broadcasting of the lessons from our new home, hoping that studying in this new place will enable us to disseminate the sources of Kabbalah widely to the public. This, of course, has nothing to do with the corporeal building, but with the efforts that we have made in building this place. Our great efforts operate the strength of our desire through which new people will be drawn here. We will also be able to go out to the public more powerfully, with greater understanding of the wisdom of Kabbalah, and will thus be able to draw people to the correction of the world.

When I first came to Rabash, the new building that was being constructed on Hazon Ish Street in Bnei Brak was almost ready. There was still work to be done inside in arranging the interior. They also tried to build it together with hardly any help from the outside. This is how Kabbalists have always expressed their desire to do things: We built a big Sukkah at Sukkot, and special ovens for Pesach, a gallery, and a women’s section and other additions. We always tried to build everything by ourselves.

I am very glad that during the construction of this building and everything that is in it, everyone did his best and made great efforts. The individual investment of the friends is eternal, both in corporeality and in spirituality. It all rises upwards together with a person’s intentions, subconsciously or consciously, according to his abilities, and it works.

I truly hope that as a result of our efforts and of the efforts that are still to be made in arranging the new building, we will be awarded with greater and wider dissemination both in Israel and all over the world. We are glad that immediately after we begin to study in the new building, there will be the great international convention next month. It actually begins now since we start the preparations for the convention, for the new form, for the new level!

Indeed “changing your place brings about a change of luck.” A place means a new level a person ascends to, a new desire. If we rise to a new level each time, then our luck certainly changes. Luck or destiny refers to the Lights that drip on the souls from Dikna of Arich Anpin, from the upper part of the head of Atzilut. So these Lights are certainly new for us. I do hope that now everything that we expect to see in this life will soon be fulfilled: the revelation of the Creator in the connection between us!
