The Head Is Responsible For Everything

Laitman_177_06Torah, Deuteronomy 21:05 – 21:06: And the kohanim, the sons of Levi, shall approach, for the Lord, your God, has chosen them to serve Him and to bless in the Name of the Lord, and by their mouth shall every controversy and every lesion be [judged]. And all the elders of that city, who are the nearest to the corpse, shall wash their hands over the calf that was decapitated in the valley…

Cohens (kohanim – priests) is an intermediate stage between the Creator and all the other desires of a person. Our highest sensations, attainments, and desires are called “Cohen.”

To wash the hands means to elevate them to the property of love and bestowal, because water symbolizes the Light of Hassadim. Hands represent what a person receives, his desire to draw in the entire world.

It is written: “And all the elders of that city, who are the nearest to the corpse, shall wash their hands over the calf.” It is precisely the elders, the greatest forces of a person, that are responsible for what happened. Meaning, a person omitted something within himself. Therefore, he must engage his greatest properties in this work.

It is the same in the corporeal world. If something happens to the people, you can’t blame them; the higher authorities are guilty. The head is responsible for everything.

Drama On The Spiritual Path

Laitman_182_02Torah, Deuteronomy 21:01 – 21:04: If a slain person be found in the land which the Lord, your God is giving you to possess, lying in the field, [and] it is not known who slew him, then your elders and judges shall go forth, and they shall measure to the cities around the corpse.

And it will be, [that from] the city closer to the corpse, the elders of that city shall take a calf with which work has never been done, [and] that has never drawn a yoke, and the elders of that city shall bring the calf down to a rugged valley, which was neither tilled nor sown, and there in the valley, they shall decapitate the calf.

Since the Torah speaks only about our internal actions, here it talks about finding in yourself the person killed by you. By working on yourself, you gradually grow from the animal state. Therefore, you take from your quality an animal state that is the closest to a “slain person,” a calf, and decapitate it with a stone.

A calf is identified with the quality of Bina, with milk, and with the quality of bestowal. A stone is Lev haEven (stony heart), the heaviest egoism that is impossible to correct. In other words, you must perform an action when your indomitable egoism in its lowest form decapitates the calf that gives life, meaning milk, what is called the Light of Hassadim.

By this you perform a spiritual action in our world, and by doing so, you atone the killing of a person in you. The recognition of evil that you performed, by killing a germ of the future person in you, serves you as a starting point for the further rise.

I stopped here only on a few reference points. In fact, everything is not simple at all. It is described in the form of an instruction in the Torah and it is unclear how it can be deciphered. It requires the entire wisdom of Kabbalah.

It turns out that you kill a quality of bestowal in yourself, perform the sententious action, as if you are told, “You can’t imagine whom you killed in yourself! And now do it consciously. At the level of human, you didn’t see and couldn’t understand that you were killing a person in you, but on the animate level, you can determine this. So, kill.”

This is a very deep internal action when you force your egoism to kill the animal life familiar to you. You kill the root, from which the human killed by you was supposed to grow and now you can start acting.

This is a great internal drama and an act of inner self-observation.

Work In The Land Of Israel

laitman_933The task of entering the Land of Israel is to work with one’s egoistic desires. It is called Eretz – land, earth, from the word “Ratzon” – “Desire.”

But to become the desires of “Israel” – Yasher Kel, directed straight to the Creator, that is, to bestowal, love, and connection between all—these desires still have to be defeated.

Therefore, we must first create all these systems in ourselves in order to undertake the correction of egoistic desires.

While we were in the desert, these desires were hidden and did not work, and we were engaged only in the accumulation of the Light of Hassadim , which is acquiring the property of bestowal and rising above egoism.

After forty years of full ascension from Malchut to Bina, we descend back to Malchut. Here we begin practical work, but this time we work with our egoism. Previously we just rose above it, but now we are turning every egoistic action into an altruistic one. This is a completely different kind of work.

Question: Once you gave an example of a balloon. If you fill it with a gas lighter than air, it flies to the ceiling, and if you fill it with a heavier gas, it drops to the ground. Does this mean that the entrance to the Land of Israel is a heavier fulfillment and it pulls you down?

Answer: Of course. Egoistic properties always pull you down. Our task is to soar up with all our heavy egoism. But it’s not that scary since everything is done with the help of the Upper Light, the upper force. Our job is just to master this technique.

Where Did The Torah Come From?

Laitman_137Question: How and from where did the Torah appear?

Answer: Thousands of years ago, a human being began to contemplate the purpose of his existence for the first time, not just his perishable body and how to feed it and organize the world around him.

A desire was awakened in humans to reach their roots and discover what shapes, sculpts, creates, and organizes them biologically.

The understanding of the biological nature of humans is not the problem. The problem is to understand according to what laws and with what intention the forces that created them operate.

People have still been asking these questions from generation to generation. From the basic question about the meaning of life, they have penetrated more and more deeply into nature, and nature helped them to do this.

Their intention was simple; they wanted to reach the origin of life. They sought to understand why we exist in this world and in what manner it is possible to observe our future state. Are we moving toward it in a desirable way or is there another direction? Could it be that everything that we do is automatic?

Doubts appeared in people regarding different ways of life, whether it is preferable to advance within the framework of a personal, limited life or to advance together with all of humanity. It isn’t important that this progress consisted of the invention of clubs, clay pots, or huts. The most important thing is where we are moving internally. How can we create our future destiny and do we have freedom of choice?

These questions led humanity to begin to discover the forces of evolution which they called the “hidden power” or “the angel Raziel.”

Humans began to gradually investigate why abilities and knowledge appeared in them, why today is different compared to yesterday, and what is happening in nature that compels them to change.

The evolutionary process is indeed also typical of apes, but people contemplate this and apes don’t. Apes don’t change themselves and the world around them, but people have a need to do this. In other words, from the start there is knowledge that is inherent in humans that leads them forward.

Questions are stimulated by this, like: “If there is an upper force that always awakens new thoughts and actions in me, can I decide where to direct my thoughts and determine my actions this way?

Can I achieve a final result that was not completely expected by the force that manages me? If that result is unexpected, does that mean that on the basis of my personal conclusions I myself am the manager?” People must know whether they are moving forward and that they are doing so correctly.

The question of freedom of choice appears in people from an understanding that people are completely locked within a deterministic nature that manages their thoughts and emotions.

People have nothing of their own, rather everything that exists in the intellect and emotions comes to them from an unclear source, and they cannot do anything about it. People are part of a “device,” which sends signals to them, and they put them into action. This is even though a person doesn’t sense this device and doesn’t think that he is a part of it.

If we accept the assumption that everything works like this, everything becomes simpler. Act according to your instincts and desires, create industrial, economic, and political systems; do anything that comes to mind.

Don’t consider the question of where your thoughts and desires come from and for what purpose they were given, because you are the mechanism of their implementation. We don’t feel that we are implementing an “alien” program because we feel that it is ours, it lives within us, and that is how humanity exists.

Although there is no freedom of choice, the meta-programming gives people the illusion of freedom of choice. Nonetheless, some people began to wonder, “From where am I receiving these signals? Do they appear in me spontaneously or do they come from a program of a higher power?”

The religious view states that if people were created by the program of nature, they can rely upon the program operating for their benefit. Since the higher nature is one step above humans, it is good, reasonable, and compassionate, meaning that everything is derived from divine grace and what will be, will be.

There exists a further point of view that says that if we are managed by nature, we have the possibility of investigating this system of our management, connecting with it, and understanding to what extent and how we can cooperate with it reciprocally since nature has created within us the prerequisites for us to understand it.

This is the point of view that was formulated in the Torah that Moses wrote, but even before its creation, there were identical writings by other Kabbalists. From Adam”on, all of those who attained the spiritual world described the higher power of management, the mechanism that activates all of creation.

Moses wrote the most comprehensive book, from A to Z, from “Bereshit” (“in the beginning,” the first word of the Torah) to “Israel” (the last word in the Torah). Everything that happens in the creature from its first foundations until it is materialized in our world, as well as its ultimate future state is expressed in the Torah.

The Torah is considered to be fundamental. Although it is written in a unique language, there is nothing in it that is of literary significance. The Torah doesn’t talk about people working in the world, but only about the forces that manage creation, the forces that manage the enormous system that is beyond our attainment and in which we, and even our world, are included as a small part of.

The Torah is the general management system of creation that includes within it the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking levels of nature beginning from its spiritual creation through its materialistic formation to the successful conclusion of its future development called the completion of correction.

Do Not Sell A Captive For Money

laitman_545Torah, Deuteronomy 21:14: And it will be, if you do not desire her, then you shall send her away wherever she wishes, but you shall not sell her for money. You shall not keep her as a servant, because you have afflicted her.

The captive is a desire a person exempted from the previous egoistic intention, but is not able to make a correct altruistic intention on. Then he just sends it, so to speak, to deep waters, and it is “drifting” somewhere.

“You shall not keep her as a servant, because you have afflicted her” means that you rescued her from egoistic intention—you captured it and now you have to fully correct it, that is, to provide this desire with a correct altruistic direction toward the Creator.

If you can’t make it, leave your desire alone and consider it hovering somewhere. In a certain amount of time it will show up again, and then you will deal with it.

Question: What does it mean “you shall not sell her for money”?

Answer: The thing is that you have no right to change one desire to another and thus gain a screen for it. Money in Hebrew is “Kesef,” “Kisuf” – screen, covering. You can’t reach any gain from the fact that you didn’t finish your correction. But then it comes. Such fluctuations of desire constantly arise in a person.

You were confident that with the help of this desire you would now reach the next spiritual level, nearer to the Creator. But it proved to be above your capacities, and you can do nothing about it.

The fact is that this is not the woman who is sitting in your tent mourning her parents. This is you yourself connecting with this desire and cutting your hair. This is how a new desire is absorbed within a person, when he is willing to merge with the Creator with its help, but realizes that he’s unable to do it.

In principle, the Torah is talking about the work with the same desire, which manifests itself gradually, step by step, layer by layer. And at each level, we face problems because we have to realize these desires, see how connected with them we are how we cannot simply correct them, but need to ask the Creator for help. This is tremendous work. Everybody has to do what he is assigned to according to the root of his soul.

The Blessings Of Moses

laitman_740_02Question: What is the spiritual meaning of the blessings that Moses gave before his death?

Answer: The Torah tells us allegorically that when Moses sent the people to the Land of Israel, he climbed Mount Nebo, saw the land from there, and blessed it.

From the point of view of Bina, which Moses symbolizes, he connected with Malchut (the people of Israel) and transmitted all of his power to it so that the people could begin to rise from a state of Malchut in the Land of Israel (which had already been a different power of Malchut) to Bina.

This was the blessing through which he transferred power to the land and to the people, and the people had to implement them. The implementation includes clarification of the nature and the sequence of the corrective actions, as well as preparation of the people for movement and advancement in different forces (tribes), to individual people, tens, hundreds, and so forth.

This made it clear how they could continue to gather into greater unity in their constantly growing egoism and desire called the “Land of Israel” that was revealed by them and aim straight toward the Creator.

They began to fight in order to direct their desires toward bestowal and love, above the egoism that was depicted by the seven peoples, which were manifested in the seven structures: Hesed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, and Malchut.

This was serious work, but Moses no longer had any connection with it because he was only the characteristic of Bina, and he only transmitted love and bestowal to the people of Israel. Working between the characteristic of bestowal and the zealous, powerful egoistic desire the “Land of Israel” will be the next level, Joshua ben Nun. This force would lead the people forward toward the Land of Israel.

The Code Of The Torah

Laitman_137Question: If the code of the Torah is similar to a computer code, shouldn’t there be some device where it could be compiled and run? How do we activate this code?

Answer: We don’t activate it. This code is already operating. It has its own internal mechanism, the Light, that drives it. The question is how can we adapt to this action so that it will manage us. To do this, we must become Kabbalists.

The wisdom of Kabbalah explains that there is a code before us, a flowing river of information. If a person wants to enter it and swim along with it, he must prepare himself, enter it carefully, and then gradually swim to the center of the river and find himself within the eternal flow.

The Mixing Of The Nations

laitman_747_01A person is created as an absolute egoist and his task is to acquire a quality of bestowal and love that is opposite to egoism. This is what the Torah is for, as it is written, “I created egoism and gave the Torah for its correction.”

Since the light of the Torah corrects and returns to the correct state, we should use it as an instrument to achieve equivalence with the Creator.

Here the problem arises: does a person use the Torah for its intended purpose? Unfortunately, we see that its true purpose is absolutely forgotten.

The correct attitude to the Torah didn’t exist for long, only when the people travelled through the desert and performed correction up to the level of mutual bestowal. Then began their correction on the level of mutual reception in order to bestow, which is symbolized by the entrance to the land of Israel.

This is when they built the First Temple—the state of the full mutual completion. The system of integral connection was utilized, which means to be as one man with one heart. In it, they revealed the Creator in all His glory.

However, as soon as they reached the correct highest state between themselves, they immediately began to fall because the next level of egoism rose within them, which no longer depended on them. This egoism was in the nations of the world and outside the circle created between the Jews called the Temple.

They didn’t have the strength to resist, correct, join, and absorb it in the connection between them. After all, it belonged to those nations of the world who didn’t leave Babylon with them, didn’t go through the path of suffering in the Egyptian exile, and didn’t do the correction that people of Israel performed during 40 years of crossing the desert.

The Jews were not ready to pass the method to the nations of the world and absorb their egoism within themselves because there was no interface and no mutual inclusion of the different desires into each other. Thus, the people of Israel began to fall from the high level of mutual love in order to prepare the correction of the nations of the world.

It turns out that this almost completely corrected part of humanity had to be broken, just as the system called “Adam” was broken in its time, to dissolve in the nations of the world.

So the mutual mixing and absorption of different qualities occurred. Part of the qualities (the egoism of the nations of the world) entered the corrected qualities of the people of Israel, and Israel’s qualities of bestowal and love fell into the egoistic qualities of the nations of the world.

Naturally, nothing good came out of it, except of the mutual mixing. Therefore, it is written that the people of Israel left the exile only to attach to themselves the souls of all the rest of the people, all of Babylon who had scattered around the world and covered the surface of Earth.

This became the cause of destruction of the First Temple, which symbolized love. Then the destruction had to continue according to the same system as in the world of Nikkudim, in the system of Adam and in the destruction of the Second Temple.

After the destruction of the First Temple, there was no love left between the people, but the vestiges of the quality of bestowal remained and they were expressed in the mutual agreement and laws of the correct community. However, after destruction of the Second Temple, they also disappeared.

As it is written, “The people of Israel fell from the level of love to the level of unfounded hatred.” At the same time, they became completely identical to the nations of the world and even worse than them because the nations of the world didn’t have the rise and fall, where all the previous rises inversely transform into corresponding falls: the higher the ascent, the lower the fall.

Therefore, after the final collapse of the Second Temple, the people of Israel found themselves in a spiritual state most remote from the Creator. From this state, they must begin the path of elevation.

Thus, the first move was directed to the completion of mutual penetration, the diffusion of the qualities of the nations of the world with the qualities of the people of Israel and vice versa, so that no difference would remain between them.

This condition, on the one hand, was achieved through the creation of religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) with the help of various wars, raids, massacres, and expulsions from country to country, and on the other hand, by creation of science and culture, the discovery of continents, the great assimilation and so on by Jews.

All this was in order for the final dissolution to happen and for the various qualities to enter each other. Moreover, it is not about physical qualities and material contacts between people since the Jews always lived in isolation, but about the internal, spiritual interpenetration of the qualities. Perhaps, it was expressed externally through various physical actions that are completely incompatible with the spiritual ones.

The final diffusion of the qualities of the people of Israel with the nations of the world ended approximately in the 16th century when the great Kabbalist the Ari described the method of correction of the world and the system of the correct condition of the universe. Therefore, he is considered Mashiach (Messiah) Ben-Yosef among the Kabbalists, which is the predecessor of Mashiach Ben-David (Messiah)

And You See A Beautiful Woman

Dr. Michael LaitmanTorah, Deuteronomy, Ki Teitzei, 21:10 – 21:13: If you go out to war against your enemies, and the Lord, your God, will deliver him into your hands, and you take his captives, and you see among the captives a beautiful woman and you desire her, you may take [her] for yourself as a wife. You shall bring her into your home, and she shall shave her head and let her nails grow. And she shall remove the garment of her captivity from upon herself, and stay in your house, and weep for her father and her mother for a full month. After that, you may be intimate with her and possess her, and she will be a wife for you.

In the process of spiritual work a person rises to a level called “Eretz Israel” or “the Land of Israel.” “Eretz” is a desire that has to become completely Israel, “Yashar Kel” or “straight to the Creator.”

How will I be able to actualize this desire? Desire is always feminine. Among many of my desires some are already under my control. There are others which I can easily correct with the help of particular mutual efforts with others.

And there are also uncorrected, egoistic desires, which are called “the nations of the world” or “the seven nations” living in the Land of Israel. I can correct these desires only if I “destroy” all men, because men symbolize intention and in the “nations of the world” they are always egoistic. This is why to destroy all egoistic intentions means to “destroy men.”

Having removed the male level of intentions, I move to the female level of desires, and look to see with what am I able to work. Let us say, I meet a woman, that is, I see a very bright, intense, strong desire, but it needs to be corrected. If I do this correctly, creating on top of it a true intention toward the Creator, then as a result, I come closer to a connection with Him.

That is why I yearn for these desires or “desire beautiful women,” it does not matter what we call it. In either case, we should not imagine this as scenes in our material world.

So when I see that I have an opportunity to take a “captive as wife,” that is, to reveal within myself such desire, illuminate, correct, and aim it toward the Creator, I gladly move toward it, even though this will entail very difficult work. Because now I need to rise above this desire, rejecting my previous life.

It’s because on the previous level I was a corrected person. But now I move toward conquering the next level, “the Land of Israel,” which will connect me with the Creator and on which I will attain Him.

But when I begin to reveal within myself this level of egoism, I suddenly see that there I have many selfish intentions (spiritually male entities), and all of them rule over female desires. In light of this, I need to keep  the desires and change the intentions. That is why, as it is said in the Torah, I need to kill all the men and sanctify all the women.

And here there is a list of rules of how it is possible to initially correct these desires, while I am not able to work with them in order to bestow. In other words, desire is a woman whom I have to bring home, sit her down separately, have her shave her head and grow her nails, wash herself, and weep for her parents.

And only after she goes through this entire preparation process and is completely under my control, I can begin to work with this desire in order to bestow. In this way, I conquer the Land of Israel. But without captives, I would not have achieved this because without them, I have no desires.

Rising to the level of wanting to work directly with the Creator, I reveal the desire called “captives,” as if they are not my own; they are alien, egoistic, heavier, more coarse, opposite to the Creator. I must destroy previous egoistic intentions, but in order to work with these desires in an altruistic way, I need to first cleanse them, that is, correct them.

Question: What is meant by “shave the hair” of this desire?

Answer: The word “hair” (“Searot” in Hebrew) comes from the word “Soer,” which means “excitement, agitation.” Within a person appear all kinds of burning desires with which he cannot be connected to the Creator. That is why they need to be “shaved” and cleansed in water, in the Light of Hassadim.

Question: What is meant by “weep for her father and her mother”?

Answer: Tears are the overflow of Light, which the person is not able to receive within their uncorrected desires. That is why she needs to cry them out.

Who Are The Judges?

Dr. Michael LaitmanTorah, Deuteronomy, Devarim, 12:18: You shall appoint judges and officers in all your towns which the Lord your God gives you, according to your tribes; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

Who are the judges? This is the main problem. The judges are those who are above the person; the person appoints them by himself so they can restrict him, show him the way, and lead him further to “all gates” in all his movements, from the external world to the internality of a person, and from the internality of a person to the external world.

In our desires, decisions, actions, and even thoughts we should set up various systems of verification, analysis, and synthesis of what we are about to do; that is, we should create the system of control and analysis within us that would activate the executive system. This means that everything that exists today in the country should be within us.

The gates are the filters through which we act, they allow or prohibit us to establish contact with the outside world and even with ourselves. But with ourselves, this is already a somewhat different system that is arranged differently. That is why the filters, for the most part, are related to the interaction with the external world.

If a person really desires to improve, he can not manage without this.
