Humanity On The Threshold Of Divorce

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe entire method about which the Torah speaks, from the first Adam (man) until entering the land of Israel, is the process within a group of Kabbalists who discover the evil within the group while working on the spiritual connection between them. From then on, only good is discovered.

The discovery of evil is all the hatred that separates people and is discovered to the degree that they want to connect. However, now instead of quarreling over various insipid matters, if humanity would want to connect, it would not need to discover the evil. All of their evil is found within the people of Israel. Therefore, the nations of the world cannot correct this evil alone. They do this with the help of the people of Israel and reach correction all at once.

After all, if the true evil of the ego were revealed in them at the moment that they begin to connect, the world would be drowning in evil. They really would be devouring each other down to the bone. So, the work of connection was given only to the people of Israel who are called the “stiff-necked people.”

The people of Israel do the work of connection and transform themselves into a “glue” that can connect all of humanity. They work together with the nations of the world, but their evil inclination is not revealed in this work.

This is an interesting concept. After all, the evil inclination is specifically revealed at the time of connection between people, and we need to work with that. The Torah tells us about this in all the stages of the wilderness. In other words, they are the stages of revealing the ego that is gradually discovered and corrected. It seems as if the children of Israel were wrong, transgressed, and violated the commands of the Creator. However, it is precisely in this way that they corrected themselves and prepared themselves for entry into the land of Israel.

After their entry into the land of Israel, they still needed to conquer it, but this was already a different war, which was the conquest of the nations in the land of Israel: This was the use of the ego through the power of bestowal that they previously acquired. However, in our day, in order to correct the entire human ego, it is necessary to conquer the entire world by means of the power of bestowal. The nations of the world are not obligated to fight with their evil inclination.

The whole Torah talks about the discovery of evil that is revealed through the inclination to connect. This is similar to what a young couple does when they go through all kinds of conflicts when they try to get along in their shared life. They communicate more and more through a shared kitchen, bedroom, living room, house chores, work, a joint bank account, and spare time.

Before then, they would meet somewhere from time to time, and this didn’t obligate them to do anything. Suddenly, they have lots of reasons to connect, and so the evil inclination is revealed in them.

The entire world now feels like a pair of newlyweds. So, it requires a method, the wisdom of connection, which is the wisdom of Kabbalah. This is required everywhere; in our time there is no possibility of connecting in any other way.

Why are people not ready to connect today? Why do so many couples divorce? It is because not only is the ego revealed but also the true evil inclination. This is because humanity must now be connected all over the globe and on all levels. So, everyone will be required to know the wisdom of Kabbalah that teaches how to overcome the evil inclination.

When you want to connect with your child, you must know how to do this, specifically with the help of the wisdom of Kabbalah. You need to learn to attract the Light that Reforms otherwise you won’t have a connection with your children. Today, parents lose connection with their children who reach adolescence around the age of 13, and, in another decade, this connection will already be weakened by the age of seven or eight, and even earlier.

Today, at the age of three or four, children begin to feel completely independent. For them, a parent is simply a tool for attaining a goal, which is the fulfillment of their desires and no more. Problems of this type will appear everywhere. It is impossible to attain connection without the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Everywhere that people try to connect, in the workplace or at home, they will discover their evil inclination. They will want to connect more and will not be ready for it. So, they will divorce. Even the terrorists are divided and are not ready to connect into one gang. There are so many groups and so many factions among them! The separation will keep on growing everywhere. Soon, everyone will sit in his house with a rifle, and that’s it.

The friends in a group of Kabbalists consciously work on the connection between them. Therefore, all of these phenomena become expressed among them in a very clear and obvious form. However, Kabbalists have the tools for working against their ego, against separation, and against hatred. The friends perform the role of the people of Israel, regarding all of the children of Israel, just as all the people of Israel do with respect to all of humanity. So, all of the people of Israel must work like a group of Kabbalists with respect to the whole world.

Two Goats In The Spiritual Work

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Levitcus, 16:7-10: And he shall take the two goats, and set them before the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting. And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel. And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer him for a sin-offering. But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before the LORD, to make atonement over him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness.

Question: What is the meaning of the two goats, “and Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats?”

Answer: It is a person’s internal work to reveal the different attributes in him, analyzing and clarifying what can be corrected and what cannot, for what he has enough power and for what he does not. On the whole, however, he has no power at all but only the option to ask the Creator for help.

If a person simply thinks, “Okay, I’ll ask,” it doesn’t work. Can he really ask to get rid of his attributes? In order to do that, he must process everything inside him in a deep, serious, conscious manner and experience it as something personal.

He cannot say, “I want to correct this and that,” but he only can ask for it to be corrected. At the same time, he can ask for these attributes to be corrected, attributes that are very dear to him and from which he doesn’t want to detach in any way, like a mother from her baby, for example. Can you imagine such a state?

When a person understands that he cannot get rid of that by himself, he asks the Creator for help. Moreover, it isn’t for his own sake but in order to dedicate himself totally to others. He sacrifices his attributes as his small child. This is a real sacrifice on his part. At the same time, he ascends to a very high level when he asks the Creator to do that since he cannot do it by himself.

These things are revealed to us over a long period of time. A person goes through very serious internal states by weighing different options. He ask if he is doing the right thing, how can he give up one thing or another, and so on. We speak about these things as if they are understood, but, in fact, it isn’t just difficult, but very difficult.

Eventually, a division of the egoistic attribute takes place in a person. Part of it he can give the Creator, but the other part he cannot. This is the two goats, one of which he sacrifices and the other one he seemingly sets free.

It is very hard to explain the meaning of “and the other lot for Azazel” for the forces of impurity, and so on. This is the limit that is set on every level. It is necessary in order to advance as we are repulsed by the impure goat and sacrifice the pure goat.

Our movement is always based on the two elements of something that I am repulsed by and something that I am attracted to. It is much more difficult to be repulsed by the impure desires, to refuse to accept them, not to work with them, not to enjoy them, and not to fulfill them, rather than to sacrifice the other half.

First, I must determine which desires help me advance and which I must detach from, to “send them away for Azazel into the wilderness.”

These desires are so great that I as yet cannot work with them correctly in order to bestow and sacrifice them for the sake of the Creator. Therefore, I must send them into the wilderness, which means to detach from them.

I must clarify which of my desires are pure and correct them to the attribute of love and bestowal, which means to sacrifice them. This is a very difficult action, but this is the meaning of the continuous revelation of moving forward that is revealed in me as a result of the serious and difficult clarification.

A person doesn’t go through such states in our world. He is pushed into a corner and doesn’t know what to do. It is only in such cases of being under pressure that he can reach the revelation of his attributes, his desires, and a serious clarification and the division of the desires.

When they are totally separated, it will be possible to determine which of them is the goat for sacrifice and which is the goat for Azazel to be sent into the wilderness, no longer to be used.

A New Abraham

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 18:1-5: And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: “Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: I am the LORD your God. After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes. Mine ordinances shall ye do, and My statutes shall ye keep, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. Ye shall therefore keep My statutes, and Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.”

Under no circumstances should we use the egoistic desires that we took out of Babylon, Egypt, or from the land of Canaan, to which we soon must return. If we use all our desires properly by gradually correcting them and ascending to the previous level of Canaan, we will begin to turn this land into the land of Israel, which means focusing all our desires on the Creator, on bestowal.

Question: The modern corporeal world lives mainly by the laws of Egypt, Babylon, and Canaan but not according to the spiritual laws of Israel. Why is the spiritual revelation in Israel intended only for individuals and not for all of humanity?

Answer: No! Humanity does reveal the egoistic abyss we are all in as well as the inability of returning to the good times we had in the past. But the condition for this good life was that the ego was smaller. Therefore we say “the good old times” when we think nostalgically about the past.

Indeed, if we go fifty years back, we will see that people were less egoistic then. They were satisfied with much less and lived much more happily. They communicated with each other more and didn’t sit behind their computer screens or have the problems or the poisonous vapor of rot that are typical of our times. Everything was much simpler.

But there is no going back to those times and there is no need to do so! We have to advance. The main thing is to learn to attain the reason for the problems that we feel and to understand that they stem from a person’s ego and not from any other source. Therefore, we have to recognize that the ego is evil.

Comment: But the world has turned around when it came out of Babylon and Egypt and went back there, as today we are living by the same laws.

Answer: The world didn’t go anywhere. Humanity dispersed from Babylon all over the world and created the same Babylon everywhere. Today we are back to the small Babylon but on a global scale. Once again we are facing the huge egoistic Tower of Babel that pressures, kills, and destroys us, and we don’t know what to do.

It is now that a new Abraham should appear and call everyone to him: “Everyone who doesn’t agree with the new state, come to me! Let’s leave this state. We are not going anywhere, but we are going to ascend morally and spiritually above this terrible hateful state and start building a totally new land with a new heaven above.”

I hope that such person will appear. We have to prepare the ground for him as much as we can. We are in a very interesting historical point in which it is as if we are tangled and trapped. In this state, we have to fertilize the soil for the next generation. I see this as my mission and without that, there is no point in living.

Question: Indeed, in every egoistic leap in history there was always a leader who emerged and led the nations. Does he also have to appear now?

Answer: I think so. I hope that my students will be able to reveal themselves together as one leader. I don’t think that it will be one person. It may be in some way, but on the whole, it has to be something bigger and collective. I see the new leader as a group of people, and I think it will be the group of my students.

The situation is changing and the world is changing, including its attitude towards itself and to how to live. We see to what extent everything today is the result of advertising. Everyone understands that this world is based on a lie and that it is impossible to find the truth in it. No one is right and no one is to blame, since our nature simply manipulates us in such a way that we drown in this “vanity fair.”

When we finally acknowledge that under the pressure of external circumstances, which we actually summon, the Upper Light will reveal in us real internal, egoistic problems from which we will see that there is no way out. Then we will start to run around and will not be able to find ourselves in any way, as it says: “in the evening you will wait for the morning to come and in the morning you will wait for the evening to come.” But this will probably come after us, and now we have to work on it.

The Secret Of The Ten Tribes, Part 4

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Abraham’s group, with their law of love for the other as for oneself, “went” through all the generations in Egypt. They experienced it, got out, stood around Mount Sinai, and became a nation. At the time, where was the group of Nimrod, meaning the rest of humanity, Babylon?

Answer: In the meantime, people gradually dispersed and settled. Kabbalah and the Torah do not study this because they are engaged in the spiritual elevation of man, and this is happening on the same earthly level. All this is described well in Flavius Josephus’ The Antiquities of the Jews.

Question: Let’s go back to the people of Israel, which came into its own “land,” in the egoistic layers of its own desire. How did they begin to process this egoism?

Answer: It was not easy. Firstly, they did not know how to alter it or how to begin to work on it.

They did not have Moses with them. There were no Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. And here  began a different control of the people.

Basically, it was a kingdom. All kinds of frictions arose between them that were not described in the Torah, but in the Prophets and then in the Scriptures. They chose where to build the Temple, meaning where there was a suitable place for the sum of their spiritual desires. But we are not talking about geography, simply this process described in geographical terms.

The twelve tribes began to divide the land among them. There was a condition under which the two tribes should live beyond the Jordan where today’s Jordan is located because it was supposed to be according to the plan of the common soul on earth.

In general, there is a human nature (the soul), as well as animate, vegetative, and still. All these levels are projected on top of each other, and all are built on the same parallel principle. When the human nature begins to be manifested in us, meaning similarity to the Creator, according to this spiritual move, we also change the place of residence. In general, everything changes in us, and we do not even notice how much we change. This happens instinctively, as if by itself. Thus, we begin to explore and discover how we now need to exist.

Question: Do they continue living by the principle of love for the other as for oneself?

Answer: Of course! They continue, deepening it further. This means populating and developing of the land of Israel because the land means desire. Thus, they move forward.

But the matter is not that they divide the land between themselves. In the sources it is described how every tribe settles on its land, where it should be. The borders and clear distribution between them are described. The tribes cannot be mixed with each other because the common desire, the common soul is divided into four levels according to three lines. Hence, (4 x 3) twelve parts, the twelve tribes appeared, which must fully match their purposes, from the spiritual to the earthly level, so that they are exactly and identically added to each other according to these levels and even follow each other in a parallel manner.

Question: So, the correction of the world begins here with this small area, on which the twelve tribes are “laid?”

Answer: Yes. What is interesting is that it is said that later, at the end of the days, all of humanity becomes attached to these twelve tribes (ten of which were lost but will return). Then everything becomes clear because the modern Babylon turns into one whole, and the twelve tribes appear again in order to spread throughout the earth. That is, the “land of Israel,” like La Peau de Chagrin “stretches” throughout the entire globe, not physically of course, but internally.

Thus, this is the process of the correction of the huge layers of still, vegetative, and animate and, in general, human egoism, which is already covered, fused in one whole, and spread over the entire earth in a form that is presented to us today. As a result, from a small point, a new world is formed, with a new intention, and an aspiration “straight to the Creator,” Yashar-El, Israel.

Corrected Vision

Dr. Michael LaitmanUnless we attain the end of correction, our world will continue to exist in the way we feel it now; it’s not going anywhere.

We have to live in a state that is detached from spirituality so that we can constantly enter it and exit it, bringing particles of the corrected desires into the spiritual states. This will continue until the perfectly corrected soul is created.

When all the desires are corrected, we will not have the means to feel the matter called our world. It will simply disappear because we will have no more uncorrected desires.

What is the difference, for example, between who I am now and who I was 60 years ago? I had different desires then and what I felt in them is called a child.

The desires have changed and the child became a man who sees the world and others differently now. This means that a person’s desires gradually go through changes during his or her life , a movement, and the world seems different. It is the same here: The desires move to a different level and we cease to see this world.

The Desire Hunter

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: It is written in the Torah, “In the field you catch an animal or a bird.” What does that mean?

Answer: A field, just like a desert, is a state in which it is impossible to determine where you are, since all your desires are not completely analyzed and have not been clarified in any way.

You don’t know them yet and don’t manage them, but only begin to reveal them operating like a hunter that catches what he can.

There are different types of hunting, but in ancient times people mainly engaged in farming and in raising domesticated animals. They began to tame animals very early and in fact hardly hunted at all.

Everything was very simple. No one hunted roots, wild fruit, or wild animals.

In Babylon, too, there was no hunting. It was a small, civilized society whose people engaged in agriculture and fishing, since there was solid black soil between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and an abundance of water and fish, and this is what they lived on.

Creating A Man Out Of Me

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Acharei), 17:10-17:11: “And any man of the House of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, who eats the blood, and I will cut him off from among his people. For the soul of the flesh is in the blood, and I have therefore given it to [to be placed] upon the altar, to atone for your souls. For it is the blood that atones for the soul.”

On the one hand, blood is the vital force of the body, and on the other hand, it stems from the Hebrew word “Domem” (inanimate), the lowest part of the desire.

The point is that we have to use the attributes that we can raise to bestowal. Since we push ourselves from the lowest part of the desires, which are symbolized by blood, we cannot use them and have to release the blood from the body.

By choosing the different desires that we have, we see that the inanimate and vegetative desires are very weak, meaningless, and rather easy to use in order to bestow. On the level of the animate, they are very heavy; thus we feel that we exist in a corporeal body and see ourselves that way.

We don’t see the inanimate or vegetative states since they are concealed by our corporeal desires, which are more meaningful than the small desires. When we discover the animal states inside us, we encounter a lot of problems because we identify with them and see ourselves as them.

How can I distinguish between them and the human being in me? How can I raise the animal desires to the state of a man? “Kill’ your animal and “use it for food” so that the human level could ascend above the animal level.

What can we do in order to attain this? How can we properly tell the difference between my animal desires? Which ones can be raised to the human level and which cannot? What can I create the image of a man from? After all, he is born from an embryo that is given from above and all the rest of the nourishment comes from below, from the animal desires.

How does a human being differ from an animal in our world? It is that point in the heart, the seed that created the “I,” the self. I resemble the Creator and therefore I am called a man (Adam, stemming from the Hebrew word “Domeh” to resemble [the Creator]), and if not, I am an animal.

So the only problem is in what we call offering a sacrifice because we take the desires of the inanimate, vegetative, and mainly from the animate level, and constantly raise them to the human level. This means that we have to kill them on the animate level and raise them to the next level so that the human being in us will be nourished by these desires, by making them his spiritual work.

The Torah usually says that a person has to raise his desires to this level where there is a place to offer a sacrifice (the word “sacrifice” in Hebrew stems from the word “getting closer” to the Creator), and there it is possible to sprinkle the blood on the altar.

When you kill an animal (the lowest desires), the blood (these desires) has to be completely drained; you sprinkle the four corners (four phases) of the altar with it, which means that you bring your full desire to the Creator, you ascend to Him. Eventually, all the desires have to go through this change and ascend to the level of the great priest since only then is a person considered to be fully corrected.

There are only three levels in nature: inanimate, vegetative, and animate. A human being is what you create of yourself, and it doesn’t exist in nature. If an alien looked at us and at animals from the outside, he would say that people are animals that have been transformed, and nothing more than that. If we measure ourselves in comparison, then we are much worse than animals. Therefore, we have to aspire to make ourselves human beings.

The Sabbath

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why does the issue of the Sabbath come up again in Parashat HaShavua (weekly Torah portion), “After the Death,” after the description of the ram that is sent to the desert and the other ram that is offered as sacrifice? After all, it was already mentioned in the exodus from Egypt.

Answer: At first glance the reference to the Sabbath seems redundant and unnecessary. But the point is that all the actions that we perform are only in order to bring us to the state of the end of correction that is called Sabbath. The Sabbath symbolizes the end of all the work when everything is corrected and there is no need to do anything anymore. Thus, the states that are gradually corrected are added to the previously corrected states and are accumulated in a general account, which is eventually expressed in the state of Sabbath.

But after every action, every level also ends in the same state since if I am given 20 kilos of desires in order to correct them to love and bestowal and I reach the end of correction of this part, I enter a temporary state of Sabbath. When I fully correct my soul I reach the final state of the Great Sabbath.

Science Has Placed Us On The Path Of Suffering

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Introduction to the Study of the Ten Sefirot”, section 41: The Zohar writes about the text “and those that seek Me shall find Me,” and asks, “Where does one find the Creator? They said that the Creator is found only in the Torah.”

We must thoroughly understand their words. It seems that the Creator is hidden only in corporeal things and conducts all the futilities of this world, which are outside the Torah. Thus, how can you say the opposite, that He hides Himself only in the Torah?

This means that we can never discover the right system, the true forces in nature that manage us, the higher management and oversight, nor the higher power that is at work in an action if we are not engaged in the inner Torah, which is the wisdom of Kabbalah, the correct  way. Even the science of the physical world cannot bring us closer to this.

By being involved with scientific development, a person inserts himself into the way of suffering; since he hopes and wants to reach a good life through scientific achievements, the opposite situation is created, and he only harms himself. And this is clear, for in this manner he doesn’t develop his Kelim (vessels) for discovery of the higher power which is good and beneficent.

It follows that science brings us to failure and diverts us from the right way. As much as we value and respect modern science, ultimately it must be understood and acknowledged that it leads us to the way of suffering. Certainly everything was planned from the start, for without discovering the evil it is impossible to reach the good. This is because the human intellect must discover its empty powerlessness.

But if from the days of the first Adam (man), from the first discovery of the wisdom of Kabbalah, humanity had accepted it as the solitary means for discovering the good and beneficent power, then it would have gone by the ideal way directly towards the goal of creation.

Then there would have been no need for scientific progress and the evolution of human society. A person would have been involved in his spiritual development, whereas the compulsory physical work would have been only for meeting the requirements of bestial existence, to feed his “beast.” And all the remaining developments would have been only for the need of developing the Adam within us.

The Long Journey Through The Desert

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus”, 16; 18-19: And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleannesses of the children of Israel.

The work on the level of Aaron (the priest) is sublime and very serious work in revealing all our attributes, desires, impulses, mind, and thoughts, in terms of with what we can work in love and bestowal for others and with what we cannot. What is revealed here by a person as to what is going on isn’t simple at all.

Each of us needs to reach the level of the priest in order to divide these desires. The Torah speaks only about one person, since the whole world is included in one force. Therefore, I have to rate and differentiate what all the parts the Torah tell me and to understand precisely that I must gradually establish all the corrected vessels inside me.

I leave Babylon as a person who wants to attain the meaning of life and go to the land of Canaan as I reveal all my desires, thoughts, and impulses inside me.

Then the state of the land of Canaan begins to bubble in me by drawing me into the egoistic swamp. This means that I have gone down to Egypt, where I try to break out of myself by constantly focusing on love thy neighbor as thyself.

Eventually, when I begin to fight with myself, with my ego (Pharaoh) and my altruism (Moses and Aaron), I go to the desert (an empty place). Here I am told: “Gather all your desires with which you can advance. If you manage to do so, you will be able to receive the Upper Light on them, which will lead you forward and you will be able to move in the desert.” I am already advancing in the desert here.

The main thing is the slight awakening that emerged in me in Babylon, which is gradually covered by a very big ego that is gradually corrected in the desert. Babylon is the beginning, the thought and the goal. The ego that emerged in me is the exile in Egypt. In the desert, however, I work with an enormous, four-phase ego in order to bring it to a neutral state. I don’t want to be in it, I want to be above it.

All this is the revelation of my attitude towards the ego. It is like a huge black ball, and I clarify what I can illuminate in it under the influence of the Light, one piece, another piece, another, and then another. These are the forty years of wandering in the desert.

Each time I discover a variety of things and decide that I can ascend above all these new desires I have discovered in this phase in the desert so that no egoistic fillings will bother me. The Light and greater pleasures are gradually revealed in them, while I am above them, working only in bestowal, outside myself.

There are desires that I know I will not be able to overcome for sure. Then I send them to the desert, which means that I cannot make this desert my home, my shelter as yet, and so part of my ego remains in the desert.
