Why Does The Torah Start From Adam?

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why doesn’t the Torah start from Abraham or from the gathering at Mount Sinai, but rather begins with Adam, with creation?

Answer: In order to help us understand that the main thing is the shattering of the soul into many pieces, and then the Torah is given only in order to gather and put these parts together again, to glue them together, and thus to discover the Creator in the glued vessel. But if it didn’t start that way and there were no shattering, then all the other actions would certainly be meaningless.

Therefore, the Torah starts from Adam and not from Abraham since Abraham is already the outcome of the shattering and is already the beginning of the correction. It doesn’t start from the giving of the Torah either since this is already the receiving of the tool and the plan of correction. The Torah ends with the complete revelation of the Creator that is in the completely corrected and repeatedly strengthened soul of Adam.

People That Turned Their Back On Their Intended Purpose

Laitman_167Question: The current weekly portion “Toldot” (Generations) talks about the sale of the birthright. Drawing parallels with the present day [in Israel], can we say that some are choosing Milky pudding?

Answer: Nothing like that. After all, Esau is a first-born egoism, a huge void that needs to fill itself. There is no escape from it. If the egoism hadn’t been born, then universe wouldn’t have been in existence. That is why the birth starts from egoism.

After egoism was born and manifested, a methodology or a program for fulfillment of egoism became necessary. In other words, some sort of a symbol is required, an intention with which it is possible to use, a formula by which this Esau can be properly managed and filled. Otherwise it’s impossible to fulfill and satisfy.

Jacob is such a formula. He is a utility function, a support mechanisms that fulfills the egoism. Generally speaking, Esau is the whole basis of nature.

Question: What is the birthright of Esau for our age and for the modern Israel?

Answer: First of all, “Esau” and “Jacob,” “Israel,” and “people of the world” are completely different systems.

Esau is Esau, he can’t do anything by himself. The only thing he can do is to chase Jacob in order to elicit and force him to perform self-fulfillment. Therefore, Esau initially says, “I will sell my birthright to you. Why do I need it? I can’t gather anything from it.”

Why did Jacob purchase the birthright? In order to implement it.

Today we are heirs, the descendants of Jacob, and his sons that don’t do his work. Instead, we prefer Esau’s soup, as if we are at his level wishing to become like him. As if we want to be like the nations of the world among which we live.

What amazes me is when I see what has been happening to the Jewish people, what has become of them. It would seem that it were impossible—how much they have turned their back and removed themselves from their intended purpose.

Question: What are the consequences of this flight?

Answer: Only one, Esau would require problem solving, in other words, his fulfillment. This means, the plan of the creation will be implemented through Esau.

When Esau forces us and requires us to perform, it’s called “the path of suffering” or in Hebrew “Beito,” in its own time. Constantly, every moment, the program of creation will be executed, but all the time through the driving force.

On the other hand, it is desirable, and ultimately necessary to achieve the program of creation through the work of Jacob, knowingly and voluntarily, of their own freewill.

This means that in the end, the people of Israel, or those that are called as such today, should stand, should realize their mission, their goal, that is necessary to be achieved by all, by Esau, by humanity; and they should carry out their task. They are obliged. There is nowhere to run from it.

It turns out that the current week’s Torah portion describes such a fate, a destiny from which we can’t escape.

What kind of infamy, weakness, and insignificance are we demonstrating by wanting to abandon and push away the role of Jacob from ourselves and disguise ourselves in the hide of Esau’s hunt. This is kind of despicable, pitiful state we’ve come to.

Question: Does it mean that today we’ve confused the roles?

Answer: Yes. This is why all Esau’s attempts aren’t strange, i.e., the entire international community, to bring us back to the correct state towards our work, towards what we have to do for him, for his sake. In general, for the sake of the Creator.

In other words, we must take the birthright and implement it. Although according to the words of the Torah, it may seem that we bought it dishonestly; however everything actually happened this way. It’s not that Jacob “bypassed,” and “lied” to Esau; this is how these two programs of creation “intertwined” with each other and continued forward together. They resemble a twisted double DNA helix, which is the basis of our lives.

This is why, of course, we need to wake up and start implementing our intended purpose.

Question: Did the lentil soup Jacob offered to him for his birthright fulfill Esau? Or did he regret the fact that he “bought into” it?

Answer: This soup partially fulfilled Esau. Otherwise, the world in general wouldn’t have existed. However, in reality it’s just a soup.

Nevertheless, we constantly “feed” the world with this “soup.” Human development, progress, and the eternal pursuit of illusory pleasure, all these generate the Jewish people. If the Jewish people weren’t in their broken state, there would not be any advancement in this world.

In fact, advances in science and technical innovations aren’t necessary for the world. We provide it to the world so that people have something to do. But in fact, it’s a consequence of failing our plan, our mission.

It comes from the female line, from our common mother.

Question: As it turns out, we do only the first part, “feed the world with a soup,” but don’t fulfill the second one, the key part: we don’t buy the birthright with it?

Answer: Yes. Such is today’s Israel.

Basically each weekly Torah portion, if analyzed, at the end, provides us with a negative response about how we implement our mission. Ultimately, all 52 chapters of the year affect us negatively. After all, we don’t abide by any of them.

Question: How are those chapters implemented?

Answer: The easiest way, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” this is the main law of the Torah. Nothing else is necessary!

Question: Is this the birthright?

Answer: This is the fulfillment, the implementation of the birthright. And Esau requires this! He wants to love, and we deny him this opportunity. We don’t give and don’t create the conditions for this, and therefore, we provoke his hatred towards us.

On the other hand, the happy ending of the story is known in advance. The story is like a movie that you watch at the cinema; everything is there on the film, but you’re still somewhere in the middle worrying for the characters. It is only thanks to a happy ending that we exist, otherwise we already would have been destroyed a long time ago.

Question: Is this because we didn’t fulfill our role?

Answer: Yes. It’s not surprising that, again and again throughout the history of the Jews, stand, allegedly negative forces that put pressure upon us, and partly destroy us. Sadly, this is only a consequence of our failure to complete our program.

How many such cases are there in history?  In Spain, in England, I saw the ancient synagogues where Jews were rounded up and burned. They didn’t know for what reason at all. Indeed, what was really required of them?

Still everyone is to blame because the Jewish people initially were perceived as a single, connected “bond” of mutual responsibility (Arvut), linked within a single system to be as one man with one heart.

In such conditions each person is responsible for everybody. It turns out that there isn’t a bad or a good person; everyone is equally good and bad.

This is why when someone is killed somewhere because he was Jewish, we have no right to shout that he was in no way to blame. He is to blame because the Jewish people as a whole don’t fulfill their function. Every son of this nation is its representative.

Conversely, if people were to perform their function, they wouldn’t be killed. This would never have taken place.

After all, we are in a system that is quite determinant in which there can be no inconsistencies, spontaneity, and accidents. This is not in nature. This is one enormous, continuous, and ideal system.

Question: It turns out that by not fulfilling the principle of love your neighbor as yourself, we look at the world through the eyes of Esau, and not Jacob’s. And the world pressures us just like Esau. Now what?

Answer: It’s necessary to reach the point where everyone in the nation of Israel will feel guilty.

I listen to the news from around the world and I feel guilty for what is happening. As a result of studying Kabbalah, I started to feel ashamed to look at the people of the world.

The same thing goes for the Jewish people because I have to deliver this to them, but still I can’t. I “give birth” to the system of explanation, dissemination, and training in order for others to hear, to understand. I feel guilty towards the rest of the people.

Question: Why?

Answer: Because millions of children in Africa are dying, because people are suffering from something, from heat or cold, from their problems, conflicts, and strife, from some natural phenomena, whether human, inanimate, plant, or animal. Wars, viruses, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, it’s necessary to understand that all of these are because we don’t fulfill our function, our mission.

We must educate our people so they feel guilty. We must bring people to the truth where it won’t strangle them, won’t lock them in, won’t lead to madness, to suicide, but will cheer them up and will give them a push forward so they will see that they must and at the same time is able to make the correction in the world.

Israel In The Eyes Of Jacob

Israel In The Eyes Of Jacob

laitman_740_02The Torah isn’t just a historic document. It describes our life and how we should be part of the plan of nature in order to experience a new weekly chapter (Parashat HaShavua) every week. Otherwise its lack of excitement calls us.

Question: Let’s talk about this week’s chapter called Toldot (the history), which is very important for the Jewish people, for Israel. First, because it tells us about the birth of Jacob and on the whole about what Jacob means to Israel.

Answer: It is the foundation, the middle line, by which we manage the two lateral lines, the right and the left lines, the plus and the minus. We understand that everything is made of two opposite aspects, phenomena, forces, factors, etc. according to the positive and the negative. Otherwise nothing can exist.

We feel that we are actually between these two forces and our job is to make sure that we are constantly balanced on all levels: the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking nature. Thus, we attain the feeling of wholeness.

This basically applies to all the weekly chapters, which once we fulfill them internally, we can feel through their prism that we are in complete adhesion with the Creator, in a state of complete revelation of the Creator, fully understanding the process of creation, the correction, and the attainment of absolute wholeness. We could experience every state as the attainment of partial wholeness, which means as the revelation of a deficiency and its filling, and we could feel that we advance, attain, and reveal the world.

This is how we are made. There is no greater joy for a person than the feeling of being full and attaining the Creator, or in other words, the whole system. It is because the Creator is the whole system that works for us. On the whole, nature only includes the upper nature and not our nature. It isn’t just a clearing in the forest or forests, but what is revealed and fills our emptiness.

This appears in us and we feel that we want it. When great upper emptiness is filled, it is the greatest uppermost level of our development. Then we attain adhesion with the Creator, or in other words, His perfect whole revelation in us.

Every weekly chapter of the Torah is ten separate Sefirot, ten levels that are revealed in their great emptiness and are connected to other weekly chapters. Together they make up a hollow Sefira, but it is revealed in gradual moves, in advancing according to each weekly chapter and thus is filled.

It is revealed week by week in portions of ten Sefirot on higher and higher levels that are more refined and subtle. This attainment is in a geometric series and an increasingly greater feeling of wholeness.

Know The God Of Your Fathers And Serve Him

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” Kedoshim, 19:4: Do not turn to idols and do not make molten gods for yourselves: I am the Lord, your God. An idol is something we obtain a priori,  obtained without any proof and must be taken on faith without trying to comprehend it. This is not done at the level of the human being.

A person must attain the levels of bestowal and mutual love between us, reveal, study, and work with them. He should fully comprehend, understand, and feel the system with one’s heart and mind. Only then can he say that doesn’t worship idols nor accept anything randomly.

Despite the fact that this is a very difficult life, the Creator poses such problems before us so that we reach the level of Adam (human) and don’t remain on the animal level.

So we can’t afford to take anything for granted. The Creator wants us to study Him, “Know the God of your fathers, and serve Him.” That is, the greatest point of our ascent is the perception and the attainment of the Creator.

Comment: Sometimes one wants to disconnect from everything just so one would simply be carried forward.

Answer: This is how our egoism works within us. On one hand, the ego always accompanies us during the correct development. On the other hand, there’s a need for a distinct spiritual attainment, development, and absorption, otherwise one doesn’t quench their thirst or feel oneself.

Bestowal is the source for clean water that quenches the thirst.

Two Properties That Generate Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanEvery man shall fear his mother and his father [Honor thy father and thy mother]… the Torah, “Leviticus,” 19: 3.

In the spiritual correction it is necessary to properly use the properties of a mother and a father, reception and bestowal, which must be balanced with each other. Reception comes from a mother while bestowal comes from a father, and together they work on a person’s soul.

Each of us has to place and combine both properties internally, so then when they are mixed, they work correctly; otherwise, without them we can’t connect to anyone.

Properties of reception and bestowal, i.e., male and female parts, work together as a plug and a socket where one part goes into another and vice versa. According to a simple analogy, light appears only when a plug goes into a socket. That is, we must always work as follows: I have to receive, the other person has to give, and vice versa. This happens to everyone without exception.

Question: Why is it written: “Fear your mother and fear your father?”

Answer: In order to develop a property of reception in order to bestow, one should always feel if you another chance to do it and do you pass it up. This state is called “fear.”

A State Of Rest

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Leviticus 19:1-4: And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them: “Ye shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy. Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. Turn ye not unto the idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.”

There is a plan that operates on the world and drives it towards the goal. The goal of creation is total unity of all of humanity, which becomes one system of locked and balanced forces (desires) that are corrected in love and bestowal. This general force that totally connects everyone and turns us into equal participants in the one system is called the Creator.

Ye shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy means that we must reach an absolute connection between us, one of absolute mutual cooperation and absolute love. The Creator seems to be calling us to keep our holiness, hold on to it and make it our main goal.

The state we must attain is called Sabbath (the end of correction), which means that we must see it as our ultimate goal.

The Sabbath also symbolizes absolute rest when, in fact, there is nothing else to correct because a person has corrected his incorporation in everyone, and everyone has corrected his incorporation in Him to such an extent that he has attained an absolute, integral connection. This is called rest.

Judgment And Mercy

laitman_207The Torah, “VaYikra” (Leviticus), Kedoshim (Holy), “Let There Be Light”: The whole world is seen only in one bonding, attached in its entanglement: Midat ha Din (the Quality of Judgment) and Midat ha Rachamim (the Quality of Mercy), Malchut and Bina, attached and entangled in one another. Therefore, when the world was sentenced in the inclusive Din, it was sentenced with Rachamim, with Malchut included in Bina. Were it not so, the world would not have been able to exist for even one moment.

No matter what is going on in this world—wars, cataclysms, natural disasters—everything stems from Mercy. It is hard for us to accept this fact since it is impossible to justify disaster being at the level of this world. In order to correctly understand what is happening around us, we should reach the level at which actions are originated and from which they are performed.

In other words, the Light of Hassadim (Mercy and Love) descends into this world from Above. At a certain level, love dresses into the property of Judgment, in formidable actions. We have to ascend to this level, go through hardships, and attain a degree of Mercy. This process is called the “revelation of the Creator.”

However, our ascent should be internal, moral. In this world, parents often punish their children. When a child reaches a certain age, he understands that they were right. If his parents didn’t act the way they did, they would fail in his upbringing. So, he agrees with their actions, acknowledges his parents’ love, and appreciates their actions.

Question: What if I am a witness to numerous disasters that occur to the entire nation? Do I also have to “grow up” in order to understand why they are happening?

Answer: What is the difference? All of us are small, silly children. We all require a long and thorough upbringing.

You shall be holy (Kedoshim), for I, the Lord, am holy. When the Creator created the world and wished to discover depths out of the concealments, and light out of darkness, at that time they were mingled in one another. For this reason, out of darkness came forth light, and out of concealment came forth the deep. One came out of the other. Out of good came forth bad, and out of Rachamim (Mercy) came forth Din (Judgment). Everything is included in one another, the good inclination and the bad inclination, right and left, Israel and the rest of the nations, white and black. Everything depends on one another.

There is no difference between these things at the level of the upper root from which everything stems out. Pluses and minuses, the good and the bad, are the same. The “difference” between these notions is needed only to teach us, to elevate us from this world to the higher level at which everything will merge into one, unified whole, and become one love.

Question: What does it mean: “One came out of the other”?

Answer: At each level, there is a state “Mercy from Judgment” and “Judgment from Mercy,” they are two blocks, Aba ve Ima (Father and Mother). Interactions between them stimulate our development. That’s why we attain Mercy when we ascend.

Connecting To A Higher Level

laitman_232_04Question: Does a person know when there is a “knock on the door” that it’s the ascent to the next spiritual level?

Answer: No. The point is that when he is on a certain level, he cannot understand the demand of the next level, just as a dog cannot understand his master’s rebuke. We have no control of that at all.

We cannot attain the next level unless we have the senses suitable for it that allow us to understand which permissions, prohibitions, and moral restrictions there can be on that level. Therefore we cannot depict the next level at all since our whole world is basically what is reflected in our desires, in our consciousness. It is formed by our five senses, and our senses and our feelings operate in the desires.

If I use the five levels of my desire (seeing, hearing, taste, smell and feeling) in order to bestow, it means that I have completed my work on the level of our world and there is a switch in me to a new level. I begin to feel an upper part of the creation.

I need to connect to it, to study it, and to format myself so that I will be able to use whatever is revealed to me now in the best possible way using my five new senses. They already carry a new message and new demands by opening and discovering inside of me a new part of creation. At the same time, the demands are only focused on bestowal, on exiting myself. Thus, after the level of our world, I begin to feel the next level, the external upper world, because I have already prepared myself for that in order to bestow.

By correcting the egoistic attributes into attributes of bestowal in the range of frequencies that is revealed to me, I begin to gain control of the new level that is called the land of Israel (a desire to bestow). By controlling it and acquiring it, I attain what enters my five senses, which means that I begin to exist in this land and to feel its attribute.

The interesting fact is that at first I begin to feel the still part in it, and then the vegetative, animate, speaking, and finally the root of everything, the Creator. Then I advance onwards and feel every new level as a new world.

Spiritual And Physical Exile

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom ancient Babylon to the destruction of the Temple, the group of Abraham went through many various states, ascents and descents. It is due to egoism that they were forced to unite with each other to the extent that they revealed the inner anti-egoistic laws of nature that they wrote in the book called the Torah. The Torah is the guide by which we must live today.

Through cultivating good relationships with each other, consideration, mutual trust, and support, they revealed a special force of connection within this unity, which is the force of nature. This force holds within itself the entire universe and causes its movement towards harmony.

This was the major discovery of the descendants of the group of Abraham. Having understood the fundamental force of nature that causes the development of humankind, they saw the process by which it develops.

Over time, coming out of slavery in Egypt, they again returned to their country called Israel, the land of those who seek the Creator, where they built a state based on love of others and laws of mutual trust.

These laws were introduced into everyday life through the Sanhedrin, which was a council of sages who had achieved a high level of altruism that clearly told them how to move forward and what to do. Thus, the sages dealt with the people’s problems and led it forward. The people existed in this state before the time called the destruction of the Temple.

For many hundreds of years and with each generation fighting with their ego and rising above it, they came to a state when an unexpected surge of egoism occurred within them and which they could not cover by getting closer to each other. Through this egoism, the society fell apart.

It was then that internecine wars, distrust, and disagreement began, leading to the invasions by the Greeks and then the Romans. Thus the path of the state of Israel ended. The entire group of people went from its spiritual state into exile, from a state of “love thy neighbor as thyself” to a descent to normal, everyday egoism.

In their physical life, the spiritual exile was manifested in the form of physical exile. The Romans who conquered the land of Israel expelled the Jews who were forced to begin their centuries of wandering.

Holding together purely egoistically in order not to perish and to somehow survive, they were compelled to move from country to country where they were given temporary shelter. Thus, the 2,000 years of exile of the Jewish people passed in this way.

The Last Stage Of Corporeal Evolution

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Can we say that our spiritual advancement is parallel to the evolution of the world?

Answer: No. The corporeal world has already evolved to its ultimate phase. We on the other hand, are on the human level and can continue our evolution on a higher spiritual level.

This means that the still, vegetative, animate nature, and man in his animate nature, have exhausted all the options of their evolution. Therefore, the world doesn’t know how to go on. A person doesn’t have the powers or the right attributes to change anything. Civilization has reached a dead end in the course of its evolution and is now confronted with a general crisis in every aspect of life.

No one can see any way of putting an end to the situation we are in. There are, of course, wise guys in society who try to come up with solutions and thus advance, become more prominent, and make a profit from the current situation, but their suggestions very soon prove to be useless and are just like a hiring a “fakir per hour” and nothing more than that.

No matter what philosophers, economists, politicians, or sociologists say, they cannot offer anything constructive and positive. Although they see things correctly, and understand to some extent what is going on in society, their suggestions turn out to be totally absurd once put to a test. It is simply their ego that wants to say that it has some idea or a solution or at least a way to prevent the coming end.

We are in a very unpleasant state. The people have been anesthetized and thus keep on living with their small joys and sorrows, and staggering through their temporary existence as long things don’t get any worse.

For the first time in history, humanity is in a state of total apathy.

We have tried everything: feudalism, capitalism, socialism, and communism and now there is a certain inclination to return to the feudal system and split countries into small parts. It is the same idea as feudalism. Two hundred years ago, Germany was comprised of dozens of small principalities, and is now ready to split up again. Recently, there was a poll in Venice about breaking away from Italy.

They believe that there is something logical about this breakup: “If I detach myself from you and you detach yourself from me, we become independent administrative units and since we will be on our own, it will be easier to manage life within our borders.” The ego doesn’t conquer large areas, so it dominates small republics that have split up.

On the whole, they are very nationalistic and are even ready for sacrifice as long as they can be independent. The Catalonians, for example, cannot stand the Spanish and the Corsicans cannot stand the French and the Scots cannot stand the British.

This is a sign that we are not ready for unity and are trying to avoid it in any possible way, although nature obliges us to unite. If we were ready to unite, according to our parameters, feelings, and desires, there wouldn’t be any problems.

When the Europeans decided to establish the EU, they didn’t understand that they have to annul, not only the borders, but also to the imbalance between the states. They could have done all that, but their egos didn’t allow them to do so. It remained uncorrected and so many nations now want to go back to something more tangible and small and the feeling that “this is mine.”

Every one of the seven billion people on this planet is isolated in his corner. More and more people communicate with each other only through the Internet. Only the method of integral education provides a way out from this dead end.
