Lateral Movement

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can we determine that we can move on to the next spiritual level?

Answer: When you feel that you have no more powers to develop and have exhausted them on the current level, but have not yet reached the goal, it is a sign that you lack the next level.

In other words, we reach a certain state in our spiritual development in which we run out of powers to attain an inner level or to just remain on the same level today that we were on yesterday and to remain tomorrow on the level we are today. We run out of fuel! Then we begin to advance laterally. This is called self-movement, using your freewill.

The purpose of lateral movement is to connect all the people in the world into one whole, one desire, and one network that will be based totally on the good, mutual connection between people. Then the Creator, the attribute of love and bestowal, will be revealed in this network.

By this network we will transcend to a new level of existence and change our feeling of the world and our perspective.

A Test On The Attribute Of Holiness

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Book of Zohar, “VaYikra,” Kedoshim, item 16: The chapter Kedoshim is the whole of the Torah and it is the seal ring of truth. In this chapter the upper secrets of the Torah are renewed in the Ten Commandments and in decrees and punishments and the upper commandments. And when the friends reached this chapter they rejoiced.

Holy refers to holiness, the attribute of Bina (complete bestowal).

And when the friends reached this chapter they rejoiced, since they reached a level on which all the attributes concealed in them are fully corrected in order to bestow and now they are facing a state of to receive in order to bestow. This isn’t some unstable state that is above the clouds but direct entrance and working within the land of Israel.

The chapter of Kedoshim is the whole of the Torah and it is the seal ring of truth, which means that the whole Torah is meant only to attain the attribute of bestowal. If you hold on to it, you can use it as a seal on different desires and use them correctly. Now you can be sure that you will not go wrong since you are led by bestowal.

Question: So why don’t we stop here?

Answer: No! You haven’t corrected yourself as yet, but have only reached a level on which you are ready to work with the desires that were shattered on purpose so you will be able to correct them in order to bestow.

Let’s suppose that the Creator created a car and shattered it to pieces and you can do whatever you want with those pieces now. There is a manual attached and the first part is theoretical, as usual, and only describes how a person should prepare himself for the work. In this part, you can find mathematics, physics, mechanics, electronics, in short everything you need to know in order to assemble a car.

Having learned that, you test yourself and ascend to the level of Kadosh. Now you can begin to put the car together properly. There will be problems along the way, of course, and you will make mistakes in one part or another, but on the whole you are ready to work.

Therefore, Rabbi Simon’s students, the authors of The Book of Zohar were so glad when they attained that level, since at that level, a person’s real work begins.

Until then, you are like a student who has graduated his studies but hasn’t yet  proven himself in any way. However, you already have a spiritual base with which to work.

Blessed Are You Who Created The Worlds….

Under The Domination Of The Upper Force

Laitman_712_03The Zohar, “Leviticus” (VaYikra) “Kedoshim” (Holy), Item 108: When the Creator created the world, He established every single thing, each in its side, either on the right or on the left, and appointed high forces on them. Hence, you have not even a tiny blade of grass on earth that does not have a superior force over it in the upper worlds. And all that they do with each one, and all that each and everyone does is all by intensification of the upper force appointed over it from above.

The rigid governing of the word by the Creator leaves a person freewill with regard to one thing only: to carry out and fulfill the instructions of the upper force; it is concealed from in order for us to do them. A person is limited in every respect, except for performing the right actions, and he is constantly pushed to perform them, but not openly.

Thus, freewill is not in order to perform an action correctly (since you will perform it anyway), but to choose an environment that will help you advance seemingly independently with the help of an external system that dominates your work.

This isn’t actually an independent advance since an upper force descends upon you through the environment, by which you grow wiser, grow up, become more mature, and thus perform the actions correctly.

It turns out that you advance when you seem to independently to create an environment that is the right next phase in the correction of humanity. You are building an integral humanity by wanting to collect, correct, and unite it in order to work in order to bestow unto it.

If you don’t do it on your own, circumstances will force you to do so, but it will take much longer and does so along the path of suffering. We see what is happening to humanity now: terrible wars, personal and global problems, and natural disasters.

This sooner or later will bring us to the recognition and realization that connection and unity is the only correct action. Then, we will reach the simple solution that “bread and water” are enough, meaning that we only need the basic necessities of life, and everything else is in order to bestow.

Question: Does that mean that we will feel the complete recognition of the fact that there isn’t a tiny leaf of grass on earth that doesn’t have an upper force above in the upper worlds?

Answer: When we ascend the levels of the spiritual worlds, on every level we will get to know better not only the leaves of grass or atoms, but also different micro-forces that descend, which, by the way, are the strongest and the most influential. It is because the whole coarse mechanism of our world, which we feel until we find their origin, is made of them.

Question: It turns out that what is invisible is the strongest.

Answer: Yes, and this is what different discoveries and innovations prove. If you showed a primitive person a computer, for example, the first thing he would do is taste it. He wouldn’t understand what it is for. For him, doing something is hunting animals and finding food in order to survive.

What was acceptable even a hundred years ago is no longer relevant. We have invented and developed engines, mechanisms, and machines by which we can travel, but today we don’t need to go anywhere because we can see everything on the Internet. A person still finds it interesting to go out and see things, but this gradually is disappearing. Human existence is transforming into the level of thought.

Levels Of Perceiving The Torah

Laitman_137The Torah is a spiritual instruction, through following it a person gradually attains the end of the correction of the soul. At first glance many parts of the Torah seem to be repetitive, but these repetitions are on the next, higher level.

When I went to school, for example, I understood the laws of physics without a problem and they seemed quite simple. I wondered how deeper and more complex they were when I studied them at university, since they seemed the same but it was on a totally different level of study.

Therefore, it is impossible to fulfill the laws of the Torah if you are not on the matching spiritual level. It is impossible to attain the next level if you haven’t prepared your five senses for it.

It is like teaching a dog morality. Of course, he can perceive your mood instinctively, but he will never perceive the moral message. If you want him to behave properly you have to descend to his level and make it understood through reward and punishment what is allowed and what is not. He will perfectly understand that he shouldn’t take food from the table because he will receive a blow, not because you are expecting guests and the table is set for them.

Explaining the systems of prohibitions to a human being can take on totally different forms of morality, which means that everyone understands according to his level.

Therefore, although the stories in the Torah are conveyed in the same words, their levels are very different, just like the difference between the perception of a man and a dog.

Question: What does the processing of the spiritual level mean?

Answer: It means that you have properly combined and connected all the desires that can be used on a certain level, made them into a general desire (a general vessel) and have received in it the measure of Light in order to bestow that you should receive on that level.

When you work in order to bestow, you create for others the attribute of love and mercy. This is the work on the given spiritual level. The same thing repeats on the next level but with totally different conditions.

The Subtleties Of Spiritual Ascent

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” Acharei Mot, 18:20: And unto the wife of thy neighbor thou dost not give thy seed of copulation, to defile thyself with her.

“The wife of thy neighbor” is a Kli (vessel), the desire with which I am not able to perform an action of bestowal. This is beyond my ability.

There are situations when a person is unable to think about the correct intention. Say, I am dying of hunger when a tasty dish has been placed in front of me. At this time am I really able to think about the fact that I am fortifying myself in order to bestow all my strength for the benefit of my neighbor?

In the corporeal world of course, I can pretend that I am supposedly busy thinking about bestowal. But in the spiritual world, “supposedly” does not exist. Everything is distinct: There is a degree to which one can control oneself, and a degree below which it is impossible to hold back. And so it is in everything.

This applies to all pleasures: food, sex, family, money, power, honor, knowledge. A person always has a certain threshold under which he can restrain himself. If you put $100 in front of me and I know that my entire life depends on it, I will not be able to help myself, I will take it. That is our nature, which puts us at the mercy of some circumstances.

And I need to know my nature, because in the system of ascending from below upwards, I study myself, raising my moral level not through the brainwashing accepted in our world or through pumping myself with all kinds of ideas, but through the help of connection to the upper system.

If I rise to the first degree, then no matter who I am, I will not be able to carry out here that which I will be capable of in the second degree. Everything happens so precisely that each degree can be numbered in accordance with what can be done on it and what can not.

So it is written here about the conditions in which I have to work if I reach the level described in this specific chapter of the Torah. Previous chapters do not yet mention it, and the following ones will not discuss it further. So at this given level, I need to correct such inner properties in myself that will allow me to secure myself against mistakes on this degree.

Question: What does it mean “And unto the wife of thy neighbor thou dost not give thy seed of copulation?”

Answer: This means that at a lower degree if I came across such property as “the wife of my neighbor,” I would have surely used it.

But on this degree, whenever I encounter it, I must make a correction so I will not get into contacts that would lead me in a completely different direction, because then I wouldn’t be able to ascend.

And so it is on every degree! This is the work of the whole system. By correcting himself internally, a person ascends higher and higher each time. In our world there are no analogues to such corrections. These are neither moral, nor ethical, nor aesthetic forms. It becomes our inner nature.

Rising to the next degree means drawing the Upper Light to myself, which will correct me to such an extent that I will be able to rise to the level of the next degree. Then I will absolutely be able to use the previous degree correctly.

At the level of the material world around us, however, there is no manifestation that I might not disturb; I cannot do anything correctly. In other words, only the ascent to the next degree gives me the assurance that from this point on, the previous degree is absolutely right for me and that I will act correctly.

I use the lower degree in order to rise to the upper one, and it becomes my place of work. I evoke the Upper Light on myself, which gradually influences me, leading me through various chaotic states, their analyses and syntheses, until finally it accumulates to such a quantity and quality that it lifts me to the next level.

Through this, I fully establish the previous degree as corrected and I can be confident that I will never fall into it. Therefore, every part of the Torah refers to some specific degrees, moreover, with the same words as in several previous chapters. Yet, while they may be similar, there are no repetitions, because each time it is written about the next degree.

This is why we need to know which chapter of the Torah this excerpt comes from, from which section, or, in other words, on which degree it is taking place. The Torah includes the complete sequence of our ascent to the full correction of the soul.

The Mutation And Correction Of Mutual Human Relations

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Leviticus, 18:23: And thou shalt not lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith; neither shall any woman stand before a beast, to lie down thereto; it is perversion.

A connection with a beast means the connection with the animal parts in me. But, in combination with spiritual desires, there can’t be a balance between the animal parts and the part of man who is be able to allow work for the sake of bestowal.

Animal parts should be used only in the form of food or clothing that is prepared from fur, leather or the like.

In spirituality these things are not specifically interpreted since everything is understood in the attributes of the Light of bestowal, Hassidim (Mercy) and Light of reception, Hochma (Wisdom). Thus we constantly need to remember that the desire to receive changes and transforms itself into the desire to bestow since besides that there is nothing else.

The Torah, Leviticus 18:24: Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things; for in all these the nations are defiled, which I cast out from before you.

The origin of incorrect relationships between men began in Egypt. They were very popular in Greece and Ancient Rome and became an actual cult.

From a spiritual viewpoint, this is the result of the shattering of the spiritual object “Adam” and the continuing, mutual penetration of all its parts into one another, when the attributes of unity enter the attributes that oppose them completely and create all kinds of possible mutations.

It turns out that attributes that are completely unsuitable for each other are together. This phenomena also exist on the inanimate, vegetative, and animate levels, but is most pronounced on the level of man and that is where it specifically is corrected.

All of the prohibitions on such a union are specified only in the Torah and apply only to those that correct the attribute of the human in oneself, the attribute of the soul. In all the other beliefs, these prohibitions do not exist, and on the contrary, they raised this combination and union, and changed it into cults, black magic, sadomasochism, etc.

What causes this so-called self-destruction, when a person sees himself as nothing or imagines himself an animal? This is the result of the influence of Light on the broken parts and the corrected parts of the soul. Thus it seems that in these operations, which are called spiritual acts, there is something sublime and uplifting.

In other words, prior to that, the nations in us were similar to the Egyptian people, and we must not conform to that. But it pertains only to those who advance in the study of Torah.

Question: So why does everyone read the Torah?

Answer: The Torah was given in order to prepare all the nations for the future general correction.

For You Were Strangers…

laitman_747_01The Torah, “Leviticus” (Acharei Mot) 18:25-18:27: And the land became defiled, and I visited its sin upon it, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. But as for you, you shall observe My statutes and My ordinances, and you shall not do like any of these abominations neither the native, nor the stranger who sojourns among you. For the people of the land who preceded you, did all these abominations, and the land became defiled.

The Hebrew word “Eretz” (land) stems from the word “Ratzon” (desire). Those who obtain a desire that helps them focus them on the revelation of the Creator need to correct the laws that were broken.

A stranger is a person who acquires and adapts himself to a new level. He is still in his old desires, which are not on the new level yet, but he already enters the new level. Those who yearn for the Creator can be called strangers, which means that they only enter this level or that they already acquire that level called Israel, Yashar-El (straight to the Creator). Among them there are common folks, Levites and priests (Cohenim).

Thus, it says in the Torah: “For you were strangers…” but we were strangers in the land of Egypt since we had to go through it and to take the immense desires of Pharaoh from it. Only then was it possible to ascend to the levels of the spiritual worlds.

Without the descent to Egypt we wouldn’t have been able to acquire egoistic desires. All this work that is later described takes place after the exodus from Egypt, when a person absorbs all these desires and can already correct them.

It is because all the desires of incest and impurity that were taken from Egypt are corrected on the way to the ascent to a level called Eretz Israel (the land of Israel). This means that the corrected Egypt is called the land of Israel.

Short Stories: Did The Deluge Really Happen?

Dr. Michael LaitmanEverything that the Torah writes about happens on a spiritual level, but its characters were Kabbalists and  really existed. The Torah speaks only about a person’s entry into the spiritual world. It  does not describe phenomena and events in physical life, rather only a person’s internal path towards attaining the Creator.

In this sense, Adam and Noah were real people who once lived on earth, taught people in their Kabbalistic schools, and called them their children or descendants.

Since the events described in the Torah happened on a spiritual level, it is impossible to say that they all happened in physical life.

For example, was there really a deluge? For thousands of years of human development there were certainly all kinds of natural disasters. But the story of the flood speaks about two characteristics of the mighty power of water, about a good characteristic of bestowal that the water symbolizes (the right side) and about a bad power of water that drowns, destroys, causes tsunamis and the like (the left side).

The story about Noah is specifically about this and not about some global natural disaster in our world.

The Torah speaks about how the person understands in what manner he must rise above the characteristic of judgment, the power that exists in water, and through some kind of relationship with this power, he can realize himself within it correctly He must build an ark, the right closed environment in which the characteristics of water will be good for him, and not ruthless or lethal.

On his contemporary level of knowledge about the system of management, Noah made a tremendous discovery for future generations of Kabbalists that made it clear how it is possible to pass through the crude, powerful, and most threatening natural forces to good and useful ones.

This is because before Noah, people were powerless when confronting nature, like little children. And his method made it possible to tame the threatening power of nature. So the level of Noah was necessary on the way of humanity towards attainment and control of the entire system of management.

Creating The General Vessel With Proper Connections

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus”, 18; 22: Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination.

Such relations in our world are the expression of homosexuality. In the spiritual world it is the inability of the male and the female parts of the general vessel to properly connect.

The male part is the one who bestows and the female part is the one who receives. They have to connect according to certain laws. Certain actions have to be performed in their connection such as purification, exposure, etc. Only then can a general vessel can be created in the right combination between the attributes of receiving and of bestowal. What is more, this all takes place within a person.

A new level cannot be born out of two male parts since the Light of Hasadim, the Light of bestowal, is lacking in this combination,. The Torah, however, speaks only about actions that can be used in order to bestow outside oneself, since by that you correct your soul.

Subtleties Of The Mutual Cooperation Between The Parts Of The Common Soul

laitman_423_01Torah, “Leviticus” (Acharei Mot), 18:9: The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or the daughter of thy mother, whether born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover.

This is about a system of mutual cooperation between the male and the female parts of the general vessel (Kli).

Every part of the vessel of receiving is of a female attribute. The male attribute is the attribute of bestowal that cannot connect with the female attribute (the desire to receive) if they both stem from incorrect connections between them.

Thus, the prohibition of “The nakedness of thy sister… thou shalt not uncover” refers to the fact that it is impossible for these two parts to connect when there is no Light of Hassadim in it. That is the clothing, the dressing on the Light of Hochma.

At least twenty attributes of each Light and their names are clarified in Talmud Eser Sefirot (The Study of the Ten Sefirot) since it is very difficult to explain. However, we must understand that we are in this world only in order to work on the correction of the soul.

Now, on the current level of our evolution, we have entered the system called this world, and we must exist in it for a while and perform certain actions, and then move on.

The Torah speaks only about the corrections that we must perform while being on the level of this world when we feel ourselves inside a body, by corporeal means. The Torah doesn’t speak about the rest of the huge round we must undergo and about the other parts of our path.

When we speak about this world or about our world, we refer to our current state, and to what we think and feel now. It is because our world is a certain condition. We are placed in a certain block that was shattered into time, place, motion, and so forth, and we must perform certain actions on ourselves while living in it.
