A System Of Prohibitions

laitman_554The Torah, “Leviticus” (Acharei Mot), 18:14: “Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt.”

Switching between the blocks of “father” and “mother” in the spiritual system leads to the fact that part of father is transmitted through the mother and part of the “mother” is transmitted through the father and instead of two blocks there are four.

Then the mutual combination between them takes place on the outside and not inside them. On the outside refers to the next double connection, which results in sixteen blocks. Here a system of prohibitions appears since it is forbidden to switch the Light of Hochma and the Light of Hassadim inside you in order to receive them.

In other words, we speak about combinations in which you cannot correct your soul since there is no Light of Hassadim in them that can receive the Light of life, which means that the Light of Hochma doesn’t dress in the Light of Hassadim.

You should know that it is forbidden to enter such combinations, and this is your correction. You may be given a great desire in them and great problems, but you still have no right and are forbidden to use them since if you do, you will be using them in order to receive and not in order to bestow. Thus, their correction is in the fact that you didn’t touch them.

The Nakedness Of Thy Father

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Acharei Mot), 18:7: The nakedness of thy father, and the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

“The nakedness of thy father and the nakedness of thy mother shalt thou not uncover,” refers to the prohibition of receiving the direct Light from the spiritual system of AVI (Aba ve Ima – Father and Mother). The Light that constantly descends from above is only in clothing that matches it.

In our world, for example, I can transmit a certain frequency over a great distance, but in empty space, my transmission only can spread out a distance of a kilometer or so.

If I wish to transmit sound to a distance of five hundred kilometers, or in space, I must increase the ordinary frequency by dressing it in a higher frequency. When one frequency rides on another, I perform modulation, and then the signal is transmitted smoothly.

In other words, the frequency of sound rides on the greater frequency of my generator. Thus, I thus transmit the sound. At the same time, the form of my sound is on a high frequency, and the transmitter that transmits it through a filter removes it, thus leaving only the voice frequency that enters the loudspeaker, through which the sound is heard.

Thus, the sound from the transmitter to the receiver is on high frequency and undergoes modulation and filtering. This is fulfilled according to the model of the passage of the Upper Light. The physical laws in our world are a result of the attributes of the Upper Light. If we wish to transmit something a great distance, we always transmit it through some environment or by riding a higher frequency.

It is the same in the spiritual world. If there is a signal from below, it must be dressed in some other Light, another frequency. The clothing is the Light of Hassadim, the Light of Hesed, the Light of bestowal that must come from the source to the receiver. The receiver must have the opposite attribute in order to receive this attribute and to separate the inner attribute of bestowal from the actual receiving.

The bestowal that descends from the system of Father and from the system of Mother (the Light of Hochma and the Light of Hassadim) is always dressed in such clothing. When they descend, we can connect them only in blocks that are similar to one another. Therefore, there is the restriction of “the nakedness of thy father…shalt thou not uncover,” which means that it is forbidden to uncover the Light of Hochma that is not dressed in the Light of Hassadim.

Short Stories: From Adam To Noah

Dr. Michael LaitmanAdam was the first to attain the system of creation and he discovered that the ultimate goal of human evolution is the attainment of the upper state, the ascent to the level of the Creator, which all the future generations should reach.

Thus, he immediately began to disseminate the wisdom of Kabbalah by establishing three groups of students called his sons.

They were not corporeal sons, but spiritual ones who were on a lower level than their teacher and who learned from him how to ascend to the next level. Therefore, the terms, “father” and “son,” in the Torah refer to two levels. There are no blood relations between them, but only a spiritual continuation.

After Adam, there were three lines that stemmed from his students: Shem, Ham and Japheth. The line that stemmed from Shem developed, and the two other lines turned out to be dead ends. But they too were necessary in order to express, highlight, and stabilize the middle line.

Thus, a glorious chain of Kabbalists and their schools developed for many years from Adam until the time of ancient Babylon: ten generations of Kabbalists until Noah and ten generations following him.

Every generation symbolizes its certain phase in the revelation of an increasingly stronger connection with the Creator and the recognition of the network of forces that manage our world.

In Noah’s times, the clarification and the purification of the system of knowing the Creator and getting closer to Him continued, and it is described in the story of Noah’s Ark.

After all of Noah’s students ascended to the level of unity in the attribute of bestowal and equivalence to the Creator by managing to connect the parts of the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking nature inside them in one capsule (the ark), they managed to overcome the level called the “flood.” Instead of drowning, they absorbed all the attributes of the water, the attributes of life, the attribute of bestowal.

The shattering that occurred in them was the beginning of a new world. Noah symbolizes this turning point when people who study Kabbalah acquire the attribute of bestowal, which is metaphorically presented by the water. Having experienced an internal revolution, they begin to use this point correctly and continue its development.

A War Over The Taste Of Life

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Millions of people read and study the Torah, but what are they looking for if the Creator can only be found in the connection between people?

Answer: Their study is not in vain. Any study of the Torah helps a person advance and enables him to clarify things. Millions of people both religious and nonreligious have studied the Torah in many ways: the Bible, the New Testament, Islam and Christianity. Any form of studying that is somehow connected to the Torah, whether directly or indirectly, helps people advance and prepares humanity for the right connection, for correction, for the revelation of the Creator to all the created beings.

Everything that happens leads to certain outcomes. All the religious struggles and wars in the past and those that are going on today were meant to clarify the right spiritual vessel. It isn’t clear why our desire to receive has to suffer, but it is a fact that the afflictions a person undergoes develop him.

How many people die each day and what terrible diseases are revealed! New viruses will appear in the world to which modern medicine will have no answers and it is all in order to clarify the right desire.

After all, it is impossible to advance towards revealing the right desire unless you are totally disappointed of the previous desires. You are disappointed not because you cannot fulfill these desires but because you want something more meaningful.

If I suffer now, the pain doesn’t enable me to sin because I have no desire, no power, no time left, or the opportunity to do so. The afflictions force me to feel disappointed of the state I am in and to start clarifying the taste of life and of my existence.

I cannot reach the question of “what is the point of my life?” without sufferings. All the extremist streams that existed in Christianity in the past and which are rising in Islam now are meant only for this purpose: to clarify the taste of life. By demanding that the whole world accept their religion and putting their flag in every continent they are fighting for the purpose of human existence.

It is all the subconscious clarification of the thought of creation. At the moment they are clarifying it this way, but we who study Kabbalah must allow them to advance by the Light that Reforms.

This Light is revealed in our desires. If we draw the Light and begin to reveal it sufficiently, it will begin to flow from us to the rest of humanity since all the souls are connected, like connected vessels. Then they will begin to clarify these questions on a totally different level.

Then the extremist Muslims will not have to fight the corporeal bodies and will try to understand more deeply the meaning of life. In the meantime they are looking for the answer to this question by killing one another, but we can raise them to another level of clarification, to the next level.

Then they will understand that the issue isn’t bodies but desires. This clarification will be by the connection to the source of life, to a state that the Light comes from, that we all have to attain. We have to illuminate this way for them and show them that it exists, that it is open for everyone, and that the clarification is actually by the connection between different people, actually between those who are most distant and different.

Thanks to their connection above all the differences and covering all the sins by love, they will discover the upper force, which means that they will attain a deeper meaning of life.

It all depends on us. We only have to teach humanity how to connect in order to discover the Creator in the connection among us. This is the goal we are fulfilling when we organize conversation circles for the public all over the country. Thus we will be able to express the power of unity rather easily since the Israeli nation has been in this state in the past. Later this force will spread from us to the other nations.

Then we will suddenly discover that the moment we manage to connect the nation to the wisdom of truth, which means to connect thanks to the Light that Reforms, the world will suddenly calm down: the wars in Iraq, the Ukraine, and in other places will stop and so will phenomena like the Ebola virus, etc.

Our whole life will work out since we will bring people to a state in which the Upper Light will begin to clarify their desires and they will not need to clarify them by killing each other. Those who can draw the Light are only those who study the wisdom of Kabbalah.

The Prohibition Of Incest

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Acharei Mot), 18:6: None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness. I am the LORD.

There is a clear separation into the male and female parts in the spiritual system that descends from Above: the Light of Hassadim (mother) and the Light of Hochma (father).

The Light of Hochma descends through the father and the Light of Hassadim descends through the mother. They can intersect in the form of children but only in a certain combination and not randomly.

The combination can be when a certain amount of the Light of Hochma enters the Light of Hassadim, which it can contain. This means that the attribute of bestowal has to be in the amount that it can contain the Light of Hochma: pleasure in order to bestow, a filling for the sake of dissemination.

It is because every action has to be for love, for bestowal, and for the correction of others according to the rule of “love thy neighbor as thyself.” Everything is directed towards bestowal since a person’s soul is external to him.

Actions that are directed towards my own benefit and which exceed the measure necessary for my existence are invalid, not kosher, and immediately destroy the souls. Thus a person has to advance within certain limits, understanding that he can only reach a certain limit and no more. How can he be shown this in advance? There is a spiritual system that descends from Above in order to enable him to properly focus only on bestowal and to advance properly as he understands the limits of the options that he has, and to determine them independently and use them freely.

It has to teach us and show us the options we have. When we teach a child, we show him what is allowed and what is forbidden, what is good and what is bad. First we show a child something and then we want him not only to perform what we show him, but to also make a half-step forward. Similarly, the spiritual system should teach a person skills by which he can advance independently. Thus the system of Adam (human being) has to develop independently.

In our world we develop only by blows and punishments. We see that humanity is constantly mistaken and that we cannot act properly because we grow in our ego. Such mistakes are impossible in the spiritual world.

In order to protect a person in his spiritual growth, a system of self-learning has to be created in him, not the type that we generally create from the top down, but rather from the bottom up when a person still doesn’t know what to do. This is only possible in the spiritual world, thanks to its attributes.

The word forbidden in the Torah means impossible. The prohibition of incest among relatives means that it is impossible to create part of the soul in this combination, since every action that we make is a consistent correction of another part of the soul.

It is impossible to correct a certain part by this action because a vessel that is not fit for correction is formed in that way. The Light descends from above in two lines. One is a piece called father and the other is a piece called mother and they can be combined only on certain levels.

The combination should be between signals that are absolutely disconnected that descend from a single part of the system. In other words, the attribute of bestowal and the attribute of receiving have to renew constantly in the totally new parts of the soul. Getting closer identically, which stems from one upper source, is impossible.

Question: Is there an example for that in our world?

Answer: Of course. Anything that exists in the spiritual world, in the form of roots, is revealed in our world in the form of their derivatives. Thus, there is the prohibition of incest between a father and a daughter, a mother and a son, etc.

These derivatives exist in our world and they lead to negative outcomes. The psychological and mental problems caused by the marriage of relatives of European monarchs and their offspring are well known.

Incest is only possible on the animal level, but the offspring of animals are totally detached from their mother and the biological, genetic connection with the parents disappears. Several years later they can easily come in contact with one another, not realizing that they are relatives.

This is impossible in a human being since he is connected to the Upper Light, while animals are on a lower level.

The Most Elusive Commandment

The Most Stubborn And Most Purposeful

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Book of Zohar, “Tzav” (Command), item 16: “Command Aaron” comes to crown that spirit of holiness up above, separate the spirit of impurity and lower it down from Israel by desire and prayer, and from the priests in the act of sacrificing the sacrifice, each by what is appropriate for him.

A priest is the heaviest and most egoistic part in a person (the fifth level), who by correcting himself, reaches the most sublime heights.

The popular belief is that the priests have the worst character, as they are rude, rigid, and have no feelings. This is because when the lowest ego is corrected it reaches the greatest heights in its opposite form.

The ego of the priest is reversed and ascends from the lowest level to the highest level, and thus the priest can be the leader of the nation, the spiritual guide. Being on a higher level than everyone else according to his ego, he now becomes higher than everyone else according to his altruism.

On the whole, all Kabbalists are very stubborn, coarse people who work on themselves only to change internally and resemble the Creator. This is not seen on the onside, and in everyday life, they are ordinary people. All their spiritual work is concealed from the eyes of strangers, and therefore it is called the concealed wisdom.

The more a person develops spiritually, the tougher, more stubborn and obstinate he becomes. The Upper Light sustains him in this state and in all his actions. A person is in a state of clarification at every moment in his life as to what happens to him and how he can direct himself to the right path.

He first clarifies this and then sorts it out, burns, cuts, and kills his egoistic intentions by four kinds of deaths and leaves only the pure desires. Only then does he begin to correct them by attaching them to his altruistic intentions. Instead of thinking about himself, he begins to think about others; instead of worrying about himself, he worries about others; instead of loving himself, he begins to love others. Thus in every situation in life he puts his intentions through others to the Creator.

Therefore, for the priests it is the most sublime, greatest, most serious, and most spiritual law and decision.

On the outside it seems that the priest’s decisions constantly change, but on the inside he focuses on one point. But, because the ego is constantly swinging in different directions, it turns out that a person seems to be going round and round in the Sinai Desert until he cleans it completely.

He doesn’t change his initial decision, but only more finely tunes it, like a missile that constantly corrects itself according to the system that observes its flight, each time changing the angle of its flight and getting back on its initial track. A person also thinks that there are constant changes inside him while the goal and the direction remain the same. This is his future adhesion to the Creator, with the attribute of absolute love and bestowal, in the complete unity of all the shattered souls,

If a person constantly aims at this, he follows the optimal path.

Guardians Of The Spiritual System

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah tells us how man gradually organizes the spiritual system in which the Light and the desire, that were created by the Creator, merge in the connection between them as Bina enters Malchut, Malchut enters Bina, and a mutual system is formed.

When Malchut enters Bina, which means when the desire enters the Light, it gradually weakens the Light, which results in the appearance of its different levels. When Malchut receives the Light, it simultaneously builds all the systems that will help it reach the level of the Light in the future.

The Torah describes the frameworks in which the Light can spread through the desire and the desire can resemble the Light.

For example, what do the deaths of Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aaron, symbolize?

Aaron is the great priest and he symbolizes one of the guards of the system of Providence, GAR of Bina, which is not allowed to convey the Light of Hochma through it.

Aaron’s sons, Nadav and Avihu, who symbolize the attributes of that system, wanted to add the Light of Hochma into it, but they couldn’t bear it and were torn by the Light. At the same time, it is not the death of the system but the creation of a guardian, in which only the force of the Light that Aaron can convey will go through.

This is called the death of the sons of Aaron, which means not receiving in this desire, bypassing this guardian of the Light of Hochma, since a Light greater than the Light on the level of Aaron cannot pass below that.

It turns out that Aaron is a filter that shuts the entrance of the Light downwards, since the lower cannot accept it and perceive it. If someone wants to ascend to the level of the Light of Hochma, he needs to ascend to the level of Aaron.

Question: Does this mean that there cannot be another shattering?

Answer: This isn’t a shattering but an adaptation of the connection between the Light and desire. These two forces of creation must establish a symbiosis of mutual actions between them so they will correctly filter the Light and desire from Above and below in order to enable the souls to ascend properly from the bottom up, to expand, develop, and thus be filled with the Light.

Thus, Nadav and Avihu are systems that are created specifically in order to organize the frameworks in which the Light can spread inside the desire and by which the desire can resemble the Light.

Medicine From An Upper Level

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Billions of people have been studying the Torah in different ways (in Judaism, Christianity and Islam) for ages and have not managed to find the way.

Answer: We as yet don’t understand the uniqueness of the spiritual vessels. If they don’t exist in a person, he cannot picture, understand or feel them in any way. No one can jump above his level.

We can try to explain and teach this to a person for 10 or 20 years, but he will be able to open his ears and heart to hear what the Torah says, only after a Light from above, a spirit from above, is revealed to him. But unless the upper Light and spirit from above are revealed to him, he is unable to hear anything.

The difference between an animal and a human being is actually in whether his heart opens up to what the Torah says or not. This is possible only by the action of the Light.

Therefore you can look at billions of researchers and billions of sufferers and see that they cannot attain anything. It is as if you have a million sick cows. Will their suffering help them be cured of their disease? They will not be able to overcome or get rid of it by themselves. Only a human being can save them and cure them, an expert who knows and who brings them the right medicine, which means he who draws the Light.

Only from an upper level is it possible to correct a state we see in our life and in this world. Unless the Light appears and influences us, it is impossible to do anything. All we can do is treat people patiently in order to gradually prepare them to receive the Light on their level.

The Light appears and operates as the Surrounding Light, from a distance, as a general illumination, and a person gradually acquires a mind and feelings. The ego, the evil inclination, grows inside him, which means attributes that are opposite to the Light, in order to highlight this even more.

Thus, we shouldn’t be impressed by the fact that our world is full of clever people and at the same time is in crisis. The correction comes only by the upper force and we cannot do this by ourselves. The preparation for it is our only responsibility.

The Secret Of The Ten Tribes, Part 6

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If people have attained the level of the Temple, how can the memory of such a high connection suddenly disappear?

Answer: Love passes and hate comes along. The force of the Light that sustains this altruistic state, this connection, disappears.

It was attained by the help of the Light and the moment it ceases to illuminate, the descent and fall are immediate and we don’t remember anything at all, as if it never existed.

This is the descent and fall after the destruction of the First Temple. First begins the Babylonian exile and Nebuchadnezzar comes and takes the ten tribes so only two tribes are left.

Question: Why does he take them? Why do these ten tribes disappear?

Answer: This, in principle, will be discovered in the future, but anyway, it is essential that they totally dissolve within humanity. They carry the principle of “love thy friend as thyself” without knowing it, and they will return. In these sparks were sown the seeds of love that were planted in humanity and will spread all over the earth, as well as in the Babylonians.

Question: So again there is an encounter between Abraham and Nimrod with Babylon.

Answer: Yes, but it isn’t the same Abraham. He has fallen to the level of Babylon and therefore they can connect to him. And therein lies the spiritual potential in him that gradually leads to the development of people and the development of nations on the ordinary corporeal level.

It isn’t only a technical process, but also scientific, artistic, pedagogical, and literary. In short, it affects every process of society. The ten tribes set this process in motion, since after the fall from the spiritual level, they still have the urge for advancing forward and developing. Thus they develop all of humanity.

But they develop it in a very interesting way. We can discover them among the great inquisitors, great religious leaders, and among great scientists who seemingly have no connection at all to Jews. We just need to dig a bit more deeply.

The Babylonians still exist according to the simple principle of let me live peacefully. Let me turn on my TV set in my own apartment and give me something to eat and that’s it, I don’t need anything else.

This is Babylon. However, the invoking stimuli that won’t let a person wallow himself is the result of the ten tribes that spread all over the world.

It cannot be any other way. Where will progress stem from if not from an urge that is aimed upward? The inclination to science, literature, art, and self-expression also stems from the desire to attain the Creator, but through an egoistic desire not focused on love and bestowal beyond the self, but which is expressed by self-love.

After the destruction of the First Temple, the ten tribes began to do their job on the general accepted level and the two tribes that were left, which symbolize the nation of Israel, kept on advancing in their ascent above the ego.

More Shade Than Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: You said that a holiday hut, a Sukkah, symbolizes the soul of a person. How can one understand this?

Answer: A person sitting in a Sukkah symbolizes a desire. The measurements of the Sukkah symbolize the qualities of the human soul, and its roof symbolizes a Masach (screen).

That is, I don’t want to receive Light for my own pleasure, so there must be more shade than light in a Sukkah. This symbolizes my readiness to be satisfied with the minimum necessities, with everything else being for bestowal.

This is like the level of the Tzadik (Righteous), bestowal for the sake of bestowal. First of all, it is necessary to reach this to attain a beginning of resemblance and equivalence to the Creator. There are a few stages of approach to the Creator, and this is the initial stage.

The soul is our desire to receive, to enjoy, that is organized in a form like this by the right environment, the integration of forces, of preparation, as if it were found within a Sukkah. Certainly, this is not talking about a material Sukkah, but about such an integration of my desires within the environment that makes it possible for me to correct them gradually for the good of others.

On every day of the Sukkot holiday, we receive a new Light, with whose help we scrutinize our desires and correct them. The illumination that reaches us is called Ushpizin (guests). We receive honored guests in our Sukkah in this order: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David. They are seven Lights, each of them correcting in us a particular part of the soul: Hesed (the characteristic of Abraham), Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut.

So, during the entire holiday of Sukkot, we correct ourselves by arranging festive meals for the Ushpizin. It is customary to eat and to drink only in a Sukkah because only there is it possible to make a correction.

During Sukkot we make blessings with four symbols: Lulav (palm), Etrog (citron), myrtle, and willow. Their form is similar to the innate characteristics of the four parts of the human soul—Hochma, Bina, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut—that together, comprise a complete HaVaYaH.

So, there is a tradition to choose the Etrog carefully so that there will not be any defects in it, for it symbolizes Malchut, the foundation of creation, the foundation of the soul. All of these symbols must be connected together, and then it is possible to bless, meaning attract the Light.

From the side, this process can seem like some kind of idolatrous ceremony. The person shakes the symbolic branches that are gathered together a few times, moving them in all the directions of the Light: right, left, middle, above, below, forward, and backward. However, if we read the explanation of the Ari in the book, Shaar HaMitzvot, it then will be clear that lofty spiritual activities are concealed behind this.

In fact, a person must carry them out within himself. The external actions are only a tradition, whereas the main thing is that agitation that he performs within his soul, correcting it. The correction of the soul is the purpose of a person’s life.

During each one of the seven days of Sukkot, it is necessary to carry out internal activities like these in a Sukkah that is built inside of us by attracting Ohr Makif there. If we arrange all of the parts of the soul to resemble the four symbols of Sukkot and we know how to bless them in all the directions of our desire—right and left, with bestowal and with reception—then, at the end of the Sukkot holiday, we reach the holiday of Simchat Torah.
