The Diagnostic And Curative Power Of The Torah

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why does the holiday of Simchat Torah (rejoicing with the Torah) immediately follow Sukkot?

Answer: During the seven days of Sukkot, when I am in the Sukkah, which means surrounded by the surrounding Light, I being am corrected. This Light reaches me through Scach (branches that cover the Sukkah), which itself, is a whole spiritual mechanism.

I have guests every evening, such as  Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David, each of whom symbolizes a special attribute in a person. In other words, it is about forces that correct my attributes by turning them from evil into goodness.

I perform internal work on the entire path to perfection and use the Torah as the force of correction, and thanks to that, I am able to identify the evil within me and identify it to such an extent that eventually there is none left.

After this diagnosis, the Torah turns the evil in me into goodness and then I resemble the Creator, the absolute goodness. I am filled with love and bestowal towards others and through them to Him, since it is actually the same thing. Thus I discover what is called “the whole world is filled with His honor.” He is in everything that seems to me as being external.

Question: The holiday of Simchat Torah symbolizes joy. What is a person actually joyful about in this holiday?

Answer: It is that he has used the Torah correctly and has corrected himself in equivalence to the Creator.

Question: Why is it so delightful to resemble the Creator?

Answer: Since we reach adhesion and equivalence of form with Him, now we can bestow unto Him just as He bestows unto me. This is how we are made and there isn’t a more sublime state for us.

Question: But still, what is concealed behind that?

Answer: I was created as a desire to receive pleasure, so in a state of complete equivalence of form to the Creator, I receive pleasure from Him. By turning all the evil into goodness, into similarity to the Creator, I begin to receive all the goodness and infinite abundance from Him. It is because I also want to bestow infinite abundance.

Thus the festive symbolism of the month of Tishre describes the path to the end of correction, which results in the eighth day, Shmini Atzeret, after which there is nothing else to correct. The word “Atzeret” stems from the Hebrew word “to stop – Atsar,” which symbolizes the end of correction.

We compare this perfect state to a pomegranate. All my 613 desires are the seeds of the pomegranate that have finally changed from evil to goodness.

The Torah As An Engine For Change

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah is a force, a means that corrects and transforms my evil inclination into a good inclination. Through its realization, if I attain a good result, then I reach Simchat Torah. Then I am happy that I had the Torah by which I corrected myself, achieved success and attained something good.

Question: if the Torah is a means for correcting evil, then the person must first identify the evil within him. And until then he doesn’t require this means. But if I have already begun searching inside, what evil will I discover?

Answer: The basic answer is that the evil is examined in relation to the Creator. Everything that is against the Creator is called evil. Whereas, the Creator is called “good and the does good” according to His actions.

My evil differentiates me from the Creator because I feel everything according to equivalence of form, and vice versa. I cannot perceive something with which I have nothing in common.

But the evil inclination is very important because the Creator is the one who created it. He created it in opposition to Himself, named it appropriately, and gave me some kind of mechanism, a key, through which I can discover this evil within me and transform it into good. And then I become good, precisely in the same form and at the same level as the Creator.

When I understand and perceive this, then the Torah acquires very great meaning in my eyes. This is because with its help I can transform from being a small bug into something very great and good, like the Creator, acquiring the same power, the same ability to bestow and love, the same knowledge, the same attainment, and the ability to become eternal and complete.

Torah for me is no longer just a Torah scroll in a chest. It is not just a book, but the power of correction, the power of inner changes.

This is a system that works and has an influence on me. It knows which desires to awaken in me, and I am changed.

This is a spice in the cauldron of the evil inclination and it could also be something outside of it. It cooks it, orders, arranges, plans, and transforms it into an opposite state. It is indeed an enormous means.

And now the whole question is, how should I use it? As far as it seems, here I will need to play some kind of role, do something myself.

And so my evil is precisely similar to the intensity of the Creator, but opposite and against Him. It is such a gigantic monster inside that it is even frightening to describe it. Therefore, the Torah must possess an even greater intensity to transform it from the evil inclination into the good inclination according to the degree of my participation.

During this process. I become good like the Creator in the same measure, in feeling and intellect, in intensity, and in all of my facets and details. By transforming my evil inclination into good, I reach compatibility with Him. Not too bad, is it?

And if this is the case, then a person who has learned to use the Torah has every reason to be happy on the Simchat Torah holiday. This is because he understands what is happening. Throughout the entire year he goes through everything by shaping and attracting the Light that Reforms to himself. This Light influences him, acts on him and corrects him time after time, flash of Light after flash of Light. And ultimately he reaches Simchat Torah, when he is entirely good and corrected.

Different Levels, One Essence

Dr. Michael LaitmanTorah, Leviticus (Ki Tazria) 13:18-20: And when the flesh hath in the skin thereof a boil, and it is healed, in the place of the boil there is a white rising, or a bright spot, reddish-white, then it shall be shown to the priest. And the priest shall look; and, behold, if the appearance thereof be lower than the skin, and the hair thereof be turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy, it hath broken out in the boil.

White is the Light of Hassadim (Mercy), and red is the Light of Hochma (Wisdom), in other words, the right and the left lines that are essential for the revelation of the essence of this desire.

Torah, Leviticus (Ki Tazria) 13:21: But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hairs therein, and it be not lower than the skin, but be dim, then the priest shall shut him up seven days.

Comment: On the whole, this is a repetition of what we already have said.

Answer: There are many repetitions in the Torah in general, since all the levels that make up ten Sefirot are similar to each other, but different chapters refer to different levels, and so the language constantly changes. However, the essence of the one problem, the ego, remains the same and so the solution to the problem is also just one: to determine exactly what is corrupted, and to ask and receive from above, the power of correction that matches it.

Question: Does the intention refer to holding on constantly in my thoughts to this picture, which, in a movie, is called the main act?

Answer: It isn’t the main scene, but an ordinary scene and there is nothing other than that.

It changes, however, since in the transition from one desire to another, you fall into egoistic use and then begin to realize and wish to correct things. You are looking for a way to do that as if there were never anything. Once again, you find a group, and once again, you begin to correct yourself according to the right environment.

In fact, the same thing repeats itself, but on a new level each time, and so it seems totally different. For example, I studied geography every year in school, and everyone thought that it was seemingly the same material over and over again. But, I saw how the study became increasingly deeper. First, we studied the ordinary division of states and continents, and then about physical geography, nature, and the demography and industry in different countries. This means that each year the acquisition of knowledge becomes deeper, although the material may seem the same on the whole. It is the same thing here because we study the same thing.

Exile: On The Verge Of The Light And Darkness, Part 4

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion:  A significant portion of the original sources emerged during the “vague” period of the destruction of the Temple. So, the books that appeared at that time had to be very elevated because they were written between the fall and the upcoming ascent. Is that right?

Answer: Of course! It was the time when the great Talmud was written and also a tremendous number of other books were created on this edge, including The Book of Zohar.

Those who wrote these books knew that people would fall into absolute darkness and rise again after many generations. They knew that in a number of centuries these books would surface again in order to let people implement the knowledge at the next higher level, together with all of humanity, all of Babylon.

Before, it was prohibited to put this knowledge in writing. Everything had to live in a person, and people worked internally. Why would anybody document anything if this wisdom was already written in the annals of their souls? Absolutely every bit of knowledge was inscribed in the memory of the “spiritual computer.” However, when people started losing connection with this computer, they obtained permission to write down the knowledge on paper. They began writing books, which is why we have the Babylonian Talmud, Mishnah, Gemarah, and The Book of Zohar.

Even today, after hundreds and thousands of years, there are dozens of volumes left, even though many parts of The Book of Zohar did not survive! Can you imagine how much they wrote?

That’s why the “Talmud” became a household word denoting something huge and comprehensive. We are talking about an incredible number of canonical texts that nobody is ever allowed to correct. Even if some lines seem wrong to us, they should still be left intact. It’s quite possible that later we’ll figure out that these lines are correct. We should know what is written there.

That’s why the Old Testament, i.e., the Torah, has remained intact since then. All further editions are identical to the archeological findings, no matter how old they are.

Question: So, the original texts carry some core rod?

Answer: Yes, they do. Even now, we continue studying the laws that explain how we should relate to these texts. We cannot change a thing in them! No matter what we think about the texts, we are strictly prohibited from changing them.

However, it is acceptable to make adaptations with references to the original text. At this time, we have processed The Book of Zohar slightly and made it more accessible to the general public. Otherwise, it is extremely hard and practically impossible to understand what’s written in these books, since they were meant for a different type of intellect or perception.

Question:  If so, the texts are written on the verge of the light and darkness, on the edge of the light and the exile. Do they carry the fetus of our further ascent?

Answer: The Mishnah, Talmud, Schulchan Aruch and many others were written and studied during the various phases of the exile. Starting with the fifteenth century, from the time of the Ari, the major book that acquired the biggest popularity among scholars is undoubtedly The Book of Zohar.

The two tribes from Abraham’s group carried the books with them through the entire exile and continued observing the principle of “loving their neighbor as themselves.”

The rest of the tribes vanished. They didn’t take the books with them because they were descendants of the First Temple, during which writing was completely prohibited.

Question: Does it mean that during the exile people were united around these writings? Were they written to attain unity?

Answer: Yes. Their task was to store the wisdom throughout history. At the end of the descent, The Book of Zohar had to be revealed. It was meant to help people leave the exile.

To Taste A Drop Of Light And Die

Dr. Michael Laitman

Midrash Sefer, “After the Death of,” “The Holy Work on Yom Kippur”: At the time of the Second Temple most of the great priests would die within a year after Yom Kippur.

In order to be worthy of entering the Holy of Holies, the great priest had to purify himself first by detaching himself from all the corporeal desires.

Most of the great priests who served at the Temple bought their position by bribery. They could never attain the spiritual level that was required in order to enter the Holy of Holies and so the encounter with the Godly revelation that took place there was deadly for them.

The descent that took place during the time of the Second Temple is what we call the shattering of the vessels.

The presence of the Upper Light, of the attribute of love and bestowal, came in contact with the attribute of receiving for one’s egoistic self (although there cannot be any contact) and then the destruction occurred. The Light disappeared and the desire that wanted the Light, wanted it egoistically (even subconsciously), couldn’t face it and the great priest would die. They used to pull him out of the Holy of Holies with a rope that was tied to his foot since others were forbidden to enter the Holy of Holies.

But he didn’t care, as long as he could taste that sweetness for a moment. A person cannot resist the pleasure of the Light because without it his life is worthless! He opens his mouth and receives the drop of poison, which is in fact, a drop of Light. But for him, for the egoist, it is a drop of poison and he dies.

This also happens to us in our world when a person sacrifices his life for a drop of pleasure. Even if he dies, he just wants to feel the pleasure. This is how we are made, with a heart and a brain, pleasure and a mind. If the pleasure is greater than the mind, the mind doesn’t work and a person simply loses his sanity.

Therefore, the great priest couldn’t restrain himself from attaining the pleasure and so he died. If he had bought his position for money and did not attain through his own exertion, it means that he lacked a Masach (screen), the instrument for receiving the Light in order to bestow. If he had exerted himself instead of paying for his position, he would have performed his spiritual work and would have ascended to that level and connected to the Upper Light.

Now, after the destruction of the Second Temple, when we had fallen all the way down to our world, there can only be one way upward. If you are not worthy of ascending to the next level, you will not attain it.

However, during the time of the First and Second Temples, it was possible for a person to touch the Light since the descent occurred from the top down. In our case, on the other hand, during the ascent from the bottom up, it is forbidden to ascend to the upper level unless we are ready for it.

Therefore today the wisdom of Kabbalah can be revealed to anyone. In any case, people will not know anything until they reach spiritual attainment.

Yom Kippur: Sorrow Or Joy?
The Way To A State Of Yom Kippur
Complex Work

I Am My Own Computer

Laitman_043The Midrash, “Acharei Mot “After the Death Of”: On the night before Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), If the High Priest was a sage, he would expound, and if not, the disciples of the sages would expound before him. If he was familiar with the reading of the Holy Writ, he would read; if not they would read before him. They would read before him from the Books of Job and Ezra, and Chronicles. Zechariah ben Kebutal said: Many times I read before him out of the Book of Daniel. When the High Priest seemed to be about to fall asleep, the young priests would snap their middle fingers before him and say to him: “My lord High Priest, stand up and drive sleep away by walking on the pavement.” They would divert him until the time came for the slaughtering of the daily morning offering. [Mishna Yoma I.1-7]

It is about a person’s personal desires that constantly must be awake since their common attribute, the state of the High Priest (Great Cohen), depends on the right connection between them into one system.

When they attain that, their collective attribute called the High Priest is ready for new action, and a spiritual state called morning appears. We already have spoken about the fact that there is a person’s external state and his internal state (the Holy of Holies), which he builds out of his desires.

This means that all these volumes that are seemingly a person’s inner parts—the person himself, his external attires, his environment—are all of our desires that come together in a certain manner and make up the picture that is described in Midrash Raba: the Temple, the priests (Cohanim) that help the High Priest, the Holy of Holies, the forks and spoons, his clothes, the entrance of the High Priest (Great Cohen) into the Holy of Holies, his work in the Temple and all the rest.

All of this is the collection of a person’s attributes in such a picture.

However, we are not talking about the picture that Kabbalists depict for us but about what we must do internally so that this picture will be created in us. It is like a computer and its screen, for example, on which I see the external picture.

In this case, I am the computer. I must find out which attributes must be in me, which connections, so that I will create inside me a picture like the one on the computer screen. They will be my attributes and not a display of strange attributes.

A Collection Of Corrected Attributes

Laitman_509“Midrash Sefer,” “Acharei Mot” (After the Death of): “At the time of the Second Temple the same sad sight repeated every year on the eve of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Before they left, the sages called out: “Admirable great priest, we are the messengers of the Supreme Court, and you are our representative and His. We beg you, the one who lives in this house, not to change the order of the procedure that we have taught you in any way!”

A person’s private desires are ready to gather and to present their sum, their collective desire, as a desire for unity with the Creator.

The entrance of the general collective desire to a place called the Holy of Holies in a state called the Great Cohen (Priest) takes place on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement).

When a person includes all three of these states, which correlate with the spiritual concept of a world, a year, and a soul (Olam, Shanah, and Nefesh), the complete gathering of all the corrected desires takes place and contact with the Creator takes place: the revelation of the Creator to a person. This is the state that each of us should attain.

A Blessing Instead Of Judgment

Dr. Michael LaitmanWeisman, “Midrash Sefer,” “After the death of,” “Holy Work on Yom Kippur”: For Yom Kippur you should prepare a person in advance, who should take the goat that is meant for Azazel to the desert, and throw it off a cliff there. The Creator has promised that by this holy work the sins of the whole congregation of Israel would be forgiven.

The one who took the goat to the desert would usually die by the end of the year and so this mission was given to person who was doomed to die that year…

The great priest couldn’t leave the inner yard until then and continue the holy work until the goat was in the desert…

In those days when the Jewish nation was a nation of righteous, they knew about the arrival of the goat to the desert when the red string that was tied to the Holy of Holies turned white.

A person who is a messenger of the whole congregation, which means of all of his desires, discovers inside him such desires that cannot be corrected and kills them.

He throws the goat (his uncorrected desires) from the cliff, according to his feelings, according to his assessments, and according to his scale and dies since he cannot correct them and thus he ascends even higher.

Such attributes called the animal in us are chosen in each of us. The uncorrected person and the uncorrected goat can complement one another. The state of the animal in us is thus corrected when we throw it from the cliff and shatter these desires.

Thanks to this state, the human being in us dies. The uncorrected part in us has to die during that year. Its death is what is good for us, our reward. When the state is called the animal in us dies, we ascend. This is a great joy, a feeling of correction and freedom from such egoistic desires, which we could not get rid of earlier.

It is said that they knew about the arrival of the goat to the desert when the red string tied to the Holy of Holies turned white. This means that now all the attributes of Din (judgment) turn to attributes of Hesed (mercy), which means that the sins of the nation are forgiven and it is freed of the uncorrected desires.

It is because the whole nation sends the goat to the desert and so all their desires on the animal level are thrown and shattered. Thus, instead of the Lord’s judgment, the nation receives the Lord’s blessing.

Fate

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: The word “Pur” (fate) appears in Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and also in Purim, which symbolizes the end of correction. Why does this term appear in both words?

Answer: The word “Pur” refers to a state in which I don’t choose anything. I try, demand and ask that the Creator should choose for me. “Pur” is from the Hebrew word “fate.”

It is a state in which I don’t count on my own strength and advance blindly, relying totally on the next level, on the Light, on the Creator who guides me.

We can only ascend the spiritual levels and reach the state of Kippur, Pur, and Purim if we advance in faith above reason. This is the only way it works.

In His Image And In His Likeness

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the principle according to which the human body was created and especially the human face?

Answer: In the image and in the likeness of a spiritual object. If a person takes the two forces that exist in nature into his, the positive and the negative, the attribute of bestowal and the attribute of receiving, and starts combining them correctly on all the levels of the ego: the root level, level one, two, three, and four, the combination of these attributes will be expressed in an external form such as his body and his face.

The face is the place from where a person radiates the Light of Hochma that descend on His body. The Light descends from the free parts of his face unto the other parts. That’s first.

Second, let’s find out how these elements are formed on a simpler level: There is a sum of certain elementary particles that form much more complex elements and then bodies. Such small organs or bodies like the liver, the kidneys, the lungs, etc. gather into a physical body or certain other objects.

How is a change of growth, a change of nature in its evolution achieved? Only thanks to the mutual cooperation of two forces: bestowal and receiving. But this leads to endless variations and combinations.

Comment: All the openings for receiving information are in the head, and the openings for extracting information are below the navel.

Answer: There are reasons for that. The spiritual object is formed in an identical manner. All our body is actually formed in His image and in His likeness, which means according to the right combination between these two forces.
