A Night’s Sleep Is The Continuation Of The Day’s Activities

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How does nature develop us with the help of dreams?

Answer: A vigorous, energetic state is called a day. When we are asleep, we exit from our prior state and connect with the next, active one. A dream is a small state (VaK – Vav Ktzavot), through which our prior, awakened state connects with the next active state.

It is similar to the neutral gear of a car transmission that is used in between the gears when we switch from first gear to second and then third gear. They are separated by a neutral gear, this is the dream at night.

If not for the neutral gear, we would not be able to switch from the first, to the second, and then to the third state. We cannot ascend to other states without sleep.

This explains why sleep is so important and why it takes so much time: 8 hours! When we are still in our egoistic nature, i.e., if our natural intentions are oriented towards our own sake, we just have to follow the demands of our physical needs. RAMBAM writes that a regular person must have enough sleep.

While we live in this material world, we must behave normally, and a night’s rest is a simple, physiological process that helps make this possible. If a person has already attained a spiritual level and acts for the sake of bestowal, then why does he need a night’s rest?  What does it mean to us?

Dreams may be consequences of the events that we experience during the day. Our aspiration to attain higher spiritual states during the day allows us to make a spiritual ascent while we sleep, or to at least make relevant clarifications.

The wisdom of Kabbalah refers to the night’s sleep as a continuation of the day, a continued vigorous state. Sleep is physiologically essential, both for those who live only within the boundaries of this world and those who dwell in the upper world, at a spiritual level.

Birth Into A New World

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Midrash Mispar, Parashat HaShavua, “Beshalach”: The Creator said, “I know that the dispute between Judah and Benjamin was for the sake of My honor, therefore I will bless both of them.”

Benjamin received his blessing in that the Beit HaMikdash (Temple) was built in his inheritance, and Judah began to possess the honor of the kingship.

Judah and Benjamin are two characteristics, two opposing forces, who shared in the birth of the people.

The layout, or general outline, of Egypt is reminiscent of the form of the uterus with a birth canal and the straits where the Israelis crossed the Red Sea. The forces that were sent after them by Pharaoh and which drove them forward symbolize the contractions in the uterus that push the fetus out.

The Torah Brings Life To Man

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus”, 11:13 to 11:21: And among birds, you shall hold these in abomination; they shall not be eaten; they are an abomination: The eagle [or the griffin vulture], the kite, the osprey, the kestrel, and the vulture after its species,  and the raven after its species, the ostrich, the jay, and the sparrow hawk, and the goshawk after its species; The owl, the gull, the little owl; The bat, the starling, the magpie; the stork, the heron after its species; the hoopoe and the atalef;  Any flying insect that walks on four, is an abomination for you. However, among all the flying insects that walk on four [legs], you may eat [from] those that have jointed [leg like] extensions above its [regular] legs, with which they hop on the ground.

We see all the levels of a person’s desires here. Inside myself, I gradually begin to discover my inner essence to the extent that I advance and I begin to see these names above me. They are like captions. I begin to understand that this is the Gematria of the given desire, its name, its attribute. Suddenly I begin to feel that I understand the biology, zoology, and the botany described in the Torah. It is inside me.

The Torah, “Leviticus”, 11:25: And anyone who carries their carcass shall immerse his garments, and he shall be unclean until evening…

Clothing is an external Masach (screen). If I touch an uncorrected desire, I fall and lose the Masach. Therefore, I have to correct this desire, wash it in water, in the Light of Hassadim (mercy).

But if I cannot correct it, since it suddenly grows weak, and I cannot work with it in order to bestow; I need to draw away from the source of temptation, meaning to remove myself from the source of temptation.

When I begin to attain that, all the texts in the Torah arise in me and become clear, since, after all, how did the author of the Torah write it? He wrote it by what he discovered inside himself.

He wasn’t a biologist or a zoologist and he didn’t stroll in the forests and the fields. Did he see these attributes, especially the ostrich and other animals that didn’t even live in these areas? It is all revealed within a person.

Science Is Becoming Convinced Of The Existence Of God

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Eric Metaxas, American author, speaker, TV host): “In 1966 Time magazine ran a cover story asking: Is God Dead? Many have accepted the cultural narrative that he’s obsolete—that as science progresses, there is less need for a “God” to explain the universe. Yet it turns out that the rumors of God’s death were premature. More amazing is that the relatively recent case for his existence comes from a surprising place—science itself.

“…Astrophysicists now know that the values of the four fundamental forces—gravity, the electromagnetic force, and the “strong” and “weak” nuclear forces—were determined less than one millionth of a second after the big bang. Alter any one value and the universe could not exist.

“The greatest miracle of all time, without any close seconds, is the universe. It is the miracle of all miracles, one that ineluctably points with the combined brightness of every star to something—or Someone—beyond itself.”

My Comment: There are many articles written on this subject. We have come to the logical conclusion of the need to justify the existence of the mind (design) outside of nature. But here science stops and comes to an invisible wall because it is impossible to penetrate beyond it with our data. But we can change our nature.

The wisdom of Kabbalah explains how it is possible to do this and how to obtain the properties of the other world, and thanks to these acquired properties, to enter that world.

A World Of Two Forces

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How is the spiritual world connected with our lives? Is it relevant to us?

Answer: The spiritual world is connected with us because it manages us. It is found on a higher level, which Einstein and other physicists wanted to penetrate but couldn’t because this is impossible. Only Kabbalists can attain it.

From this higher, spiritual world, a force that manages us acts and influences us and we obey its management. In the spiritual world there are only two forces, the force of reception and the force of bestowal, which connect in various ways. The force of reception is the desire to attract everything to itself and swallow it. The force of bestowal is the desire to give outwardly.

In our world these two forces produce all phenomena on all the various levels because they are at work within matter and the desire to receive, which is the desire to receive pleasure.

By acting within matter, within the desire to receive, these two forces create all kinds of new characteristics and feelings within matter. It follows that this matter, under the influence of these two forces, receives a new form and begins either to be similar to them or opposed to them. All kinds of changes happen with this matter.

The Force Of Good And The Force Of Evil, Part 4

Dr. Michael LaitmanThere Is No Evil in the World

Question: Can a person protect himself from all evil?

Answer: A person can be shielded from evil if he learns from past mistakes or if his parents, teachers, and society teach him from the start.

We pass this education from generation to generation: how to live so that a person will not make a mistake. He must know that there are no good and evil forces, rather there are two opposing forces: reception and bestowal. He must know how to balance them.

There is no evil in the world; rather, there are always possibilities for doing good and maintaining balance. We would not see any evil if we were sources of balance throughout the world and perceived it as one whole system. Only because of our view, our incorrect approach, do we see the world damaged and evil.

However, we have damaged it ourselves by not creating balance anywhere, especially not in human society! And so it seems to us that this world is cruel and that everything in it is evil. It seems to us as if we were given this tiny planet as a toy so that we could break it and throw it away. People behaves on this earth as foolish children.

But the time has come to begin to behave logically and understand the right approach to nature, that there is no evil or good in it, but two opposing force: plus and minus, electron and proton. Between them, we must organize our lives. So let’s organize! Life could be wonderful if it were to flow harmoniously between these two forces!

Good is not found on any single side; rather, it is in the middle, in a balanced state. And the two opposing forces simply operate from the sides. The positive force is called this, not because it is good, but simply because it emits, gives, bestows, and moves outward. The second force is called negative because it receives, and attracts to itself.

These simply are two opposing forces, and if we balance them correctly, we can create a connection between them that is called life.

Avoid Improper Contacts

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:17: And a man who takes his sister, whether his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, and he sees her nakedness, and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgraceful act, and they shall be cut off before the eyes of the members of their people; he uncovered his sister’s nakedness; he shall bear his sin.

Question: What does it mean to see the nakedness of one’s mother and sister?

Answer: It means that no Light of Hassadim is without clothing, and it cannot in any way communicate with her. In spiritual world communications, i.e., contacts between all the desires and intentions, must pass through the Light of Hassadim through the property of bestowal.

If he takes these garments off, this is the action of reception. Nudity is allowed only between a husband and a wife because they are one body and one desire. Even between them there are limitations.

There are many conditions that limit the use of a desire because you cannot come into contact with the upper Light with all of the desire until complete correction.

The Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:18: And a man who lies with a woman who has a flow, and he uncovers her nakedness he has bared her fountain, and she has uncovered the fountain of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from the midst of their people.

Comment: We are talking about a ban upon a contact that may not result in the birth of a new degree.

You cannot enter into an intimate relationship with a woman during her monthly bleeding. In our world menstruation prevents full intercourse leading to pregnancy. Since in this case the birth of a new degree is eliminated, it is forbidden to make the contact with a woman.

The Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:19: And you shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister or your father’s sister, for he would be baring his close relative; they shall bear their sin.

Comment: There can be no next of kin of the father and mother while being in contact with the highest degree. You are shorted only for your father and your mother, or for others, starting with the second line of kinship. And as far as the cousins are considered to be your consanguineous bond, neither can you enter into a contact with them.

A Butterfly On Mt. Sinai

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: The disintegration of society that we are now witnessing in Israel and all over the world reminds us of the birth of a butterfly. First there is the caterpillar, which lives for a while, eats plants, and is happy.

But at a certain point the caterpillar reaches the end and cannot fill itself anymore. Then it turns into a chrysalis and enters a state of darkness closing itself inside a cocoon where its body begins to disintegrate.

The caterpillar ceases to be what it was before. Scientists have discovered that the genes that will later turn it into a totally different creature are already in the caterpillar. After a period of chaos and disintegration, a beautiful butterfly suddenly emerges from the cocoon; a winged creature that is much more developed.

Could it be that we are in the period of the cocoon now and therefore see how everything around us is out of balance and falling apart?

Answer: It is indeed so, but in order to become a beautiful butterfly, we have to change. We can reach these changes either in a pleasant, easy, and short way by the connection between us, or by war and terrible problems that will force us to unite. This means that we can go through this process passively or actively.

Comment: So in the end we will connect with or without war.

Answer: Yes, but there is a huge difference. After all, it will not be just another war, but a nuclear war.

Question: And if we don’t connect?

Answer: It cannot be. It is already in our genes, just like the caterpillar is supposed to become a beautiful butterfly in the end. We also have the genes according to which we have to bring the whole world to correction and are already imprinted in the genes of human society, in our internal program. We only have to carry it out.

We have two options, which are good or bad. The bad option is through wars and sufferings and the good option is by reaching the fulfillment of the wisdom of Kabbalah by ourselves, attaining the force of connection by it to draw the force, the Light that Reforms unto ourselves. It says: “I have created the evil inclination, I have created the Torah as a spice, since the Light in it reforms.”

Question: You speak about the Torah, so is it about religion?

Answer: No. The Torah is light, the force we discover inside the circle, which welds us together. The force that reforms is called the Torah. It is not a religious concept at all. It isn’t a book or a parchment that has words written on it, but an inner force.

The egoistic inclination doesn’t let us connect, while the Torah is the Upper Light, the means to correct the evil inclination, which is felt only by those who sense that they have to connect with others and cannot do so. It is as if our whole nation sat in one big circle of eight million people and everyone thought only about the fact that they cannot unite. It is a fact that if there is no external pressure, the society remains separated and detached.

Our mission is to move from state one to state two. State one is our current state of insecurity and of no future as a result of the lack of connections between us because of our egoistic nature.

There are two ways of achieving state two. The right way is the way that Kabbalists tell us about. They say that if we want to advance, we have to connect. If we sit in circles and begin to discuss the issue of how to be “as one man in one heart,” we will discover how much we are against this idea. This resistance we feel towards connection is called the evil inclination.

The evil inclination is not revealed to a person in his ordinary life, when he disrespects everyone, but only when he wishes to connect to others. Only then does he see that he doesn’t want this connection and is repelled by it, although he understands that he must reach unity despite his natural repulsion.

We felt it during the last military operation “Enduring Rock,” since we could unite only under external pressure. The moment the pressure was gone, we immediately returned to our initial state and began to quarrel and fight. So what can we do? After all we need to connect!

What is actually lacking at the moment is the recognition that we need connection. We need to widely publicize and explain that our good future depends on the unity of the nation and that otherwise we are facing disaster.

If we discover that we cannot unite, although we want to, we need the Torah as a means for attaining unity. This means that we are at the foot of Mt. Sinai which is a mountain of hatred. We want to reach unity, but we cannot do so since a high mountain of mutual hatred separates us.

Then we are worthy of the receiving of the Torah, which is the revelation of the force of connection that should come and connect us. This means that the light of the Torah reforms. It is a force of unity, a force of light and love. When it is revealed, we suddenly begin to feel closeness, dependence, and a mutual connection between us.

Question: Where can we find this force?

Answer: This force is hidden in nature. Now too, it is among us, but we discover it only to the extent that we yearn to connect. This is what the whole Torah is about. Thus every time Kabbalists connect into a group, they discovered the Creator, the upper force of connection.

Question: Is this circle also suitable for people who are not religious?

Answer: The circle is suitable for everyone, not only people who are not religious, but also for women and people from every nation. After all, the Israeli nation has to be a light unto the nations, teach everyone the wisdom of connection, and reveal to everyone that the Creator is the upper nature. During the last war, it was actually the women and the mothers who voiced the call for unity of the nation.

Returning To The Origin

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Book of Zohar, Devarim (Deuteronomy), 32: The sons of Ishmael will possess the Holy Land, where she will be empty for many years. They will obstruct the children of Israel, returning to their land.

Question: The first sign of the Messiah’s arrival is the return of the Jews’ to their country. Does it happen at this time?

Answer: I think that currently we are experiencing a reverse process. The process of segregation of the people of Israel from the land of Israel is ongoing. The number of people leaving this land is greater than those who return. Moreover, the people who come to this country do so involuntarily, whereas those who leave, do so out of their freewill. I look at this process very soberly.

Babylonian Talmud: Tractate Sanhedrin, Folio 98-a: R. Abba also said: There can be no more manifest (sign of) redemption than the one written in the Prophet Yehezkel’s (Ezekiel) Book (36:8): O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel, for they are at hand to come.

This excerpt is about the fact that people are being attracted by the notion of Eretz Israel (the Land of Israel). “Eretz” is derived from the word “Ratzon” (desire); “Israel” stems from “Yashar-Kel” (directly to the Creator).

It means that the aspiration to the Creator, the force that defines each moment of our life and constantly animates and directs us, prevails in all of our desires. Thus, it becomes very clear that the Creator is the general and governing force of nature. In every moment of our life, it shapes us, our surroundings, and the world in which we live.

This force establishes relationships that help us understand our purpose: Where do we come from, what is the essence of our existence, and for what reason are we here? We start realizing that the chain of circumstances, conditions, timing, and everything that ever happens to us and/or that takes place in the world we live in has the upper thought behind it.

This is what is meant by the return to Eretz Israel (the Land of Israel), meaning to the desire that is oriented towards the Creator, to the revelation of the upper force. In this case, the governing force shows up in us as the Messiah (Mashiach) from the word “Moshech” (pulling out). This is the power that pulls us from the inanimate, vegetative, and animate levels to a state called Man (Adam), the sensation of the Messiah.

Question: What does it mean “and yield your fruit to my people of Israel”?

Answer: Under the fruit means the desire (Ratzon) that rise from the Land (Eretz). These desires lead the nation to authentic, eternal, perfect fruit, meaning attaining the Creator.

Esau and Jacob: A Battle for Leadership

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: The Torah says that Jacob followed his mother’s advice and pretended he was his brother Esau. By that, he deceitfully received Isaac’s blessing. What is this story about?

Answer: Isaac represents the left line. Esau and Jacob stand for two lines that derive from him. Neither one of them can exist without the other.

Jacob was the one who was meant to receive the blessing, since he was chosen to define and execute the entire process of correction. He is the one who provided everything to achieve the corrected state at the end of the process.

However, Isaac gave birth to Esau because it is absolutely impossible to advance without his line. In essence, Esau’s line is the line of desire, emptiness, a need and a demand to be fulfilled. In other words, Esau signifies a sensation of emptiness, suffering, and pursuit.

That’s why Esau went to the fields (field of life), which stands for the foundation of human existence in the capacity of a relatively free subject. Without this basis, human life has no meaning whatsoever. Without the quality named Esau, one cannot transition to a state called Adam (Man), and so remains at the animate level. This explains why Esau was Isaac’s firstborn to whom he was supposed to transfer everything he had.

Conversely, for Isaac’s wife Rivkah, it was not so because the program of creation was originally inherent in Jacob, not in Esau. In essence, Jacob is not Isaac’s descendant, rather he is Abraham’s. He is Isaac’s son, but not his firstborn.

This arrangement vividly demonstrates that the program of creation is an auxiliary factor, whereas the matter of creation is the basic thing. The same applies to nature. Even though Israel (“a head for me” – לי ראש) is the head of humanity, still humanity is the basic material of the desire that has to lead to unity, to adhesion with the Creator.

Question: Does it mean that Esau (an empty desire that requires fulfillment) represents the contemporary world?

Answer: The darkest and strongest forces have to be converted into the lighter ones. The Jewish people are obligated to bring the masses to merging with the Creator. The Creator is waiting for Esau, whereas Jacob is assigned to fulfill his role.

It’s a battle for leadership, for which of them is more important. It’s about splitting the functions and identifying what type of connection with the Creator each of them bears. The combat continues until the very last state, at which time the competition between them turns into connecting and replenishing one another. Egoism cannot achieve this result on its own.

In fact, Jacob didn’t really understand why he was involved in this hassle. He was a mama’s boy; he didn’t have immense desires, nor bottomless needs as did Esau. On the other hand, Esau is huge, strong, and mighty, but at the same time he is unhappy and empty. We have to understand his unenviable role. If we look at miserable, unhappy, suffering humanity that earns billions of dollars without any clue of what to do with it, it’s quite hard to envy them. Esau stands for the general masses that have to be brought to order.

Esau demands an answer from Jacob. The foremost anti-Semites, such as Henry Ford, understood this fact and wrote about it. Nevertheless, the Jews still want to escape to America and assimilate there. They do whatever is possible not to be identified as Jews.

Question: Jacob also made slight efforts to resist his mission, but his mother forced him to pursue it. In fact, who is “the mother”? Who pushes the Jewish people to act as Jacob?

Answer: Mother is a property of Bina. It’s a quality of bestowal and love that clearly realizes that otherwise it will never be implemented on the scale of all humanity.

This particular mother has two children, both of whom were born from love called Bina. They are only divided for the purpose of showing humanity the way to unite the properties of Esau and the qualities of Jacob, and demonstrate to humanity how to correctly direct these qualities. The property called Jacob has to cover Esau’s qualities with intention. If it happens, everything will work out well.

In general, neither of the brothers can be blamed for anything. Only by acquiring genuine freedom of will can we implement it into life. I would say that currently we are going through this state. Although it’s not current per se, rather, it started in the Ari’s time, in the 16th century.

Nevertheless, we are quite tardy. Look at what’s going on in the world! We have to fulfill Jacob’s mission as soon as possible. Otherwise, Esau will press on us even stronger. The most essential thing is to realize that it is us who trigger the pressure by doing nothing.
