Hochma is called “light,” and Hassadim, “water.” Bina is called “upper water,” and Malchut, “lower water” (Baal HaSulam, The Study of the Ten Sefirot, Part 1, “Inner Observation,” Chapter 8, Item 29).

There are two types of light: the light of Hochma and the light of Hassadim. The light of Hochma fills the desires to receive, which have corrected their intention to bestowal. The light of Hassadim fills the desires to bestow, which have also corrected themselves, but not to reception for the sake of bestowal, rather for pure bestowal.

Therefore, the light of Hassadim is much weaker in intensity and strength than the light of Hochma. But, in principle, these two lights fill the entire universe, which is the desire to receive.

Since the correction of the desire to receive into the desire to bestow is the purpose of our work, first we neutralize reception. This is called “Tzimtzum” (Restriction), which means that we do not want to work with the desire to receive, we rise above it.

Then the Ohr Hassadim (the light of Hassadim) spreads in our desire. And then we can even rise to the level where our desires are filled with the light of Hochma.

That is, everything happens in desire, which is the only creation.

Although only phase four was restricted, the light left the first three phases as well (Baal HaSulam, The Study of the Ten Sefirot, Part 1, “Inner Observation,” Chapter 7).

The last, fourth phase is the desire itself, which was reached by the expansion of the first three phases. The desire did not want to be egoistic and differ from the first phase in the opposite direction; therefore, it restricted itself and the light disappeared from it.

Then it took a different development of light as a basis;: it will receive the light but only in order to bring contentment to the Creator. Here it receives oppositeness from the Creator, on one hand, and on the other hand, similarity to Him.

Question: What is this state when the light departs from the Kli? How is this manifested in our world?

Answer: It is not manifested in our world. When the light leaves the Kli, it remains dead. This is similar to how any animate or vegetative body dies. The life-giving power leaves it.

Question: Does the expulsion of light from the Kli occur consciously?

Answer: Yes, the Kli cannot remain in this state, it is ready to sacrifice everything that is in it just not to be the opposite of the Creator.

Question: If all states Malchut must go through are predetermined and we are parts of this Malchut, meaning, this desire, what can we influence? Do we only feel it and that is it?

Answer: No. We are part of Malchut that can change everything. We cannot only change these states but also their purpose. In other words, we are not able to change the laws of creation, but we can change their result.

Question: But if there is something that is planned out up to the end of correction and these states already exist in potential, can I change them? I can only feel them. These states should pass through me and that is it.

Answer: Yes, that is correct. We cannot really change either our path or our goal. They are predetermined. But each moment we can check ourselves whether we are on this path, if we can accelerate it, whether we agree with the path of our development, and so on.

We can change ourselves, our attitude to what is happening, but not what is really happening.

Question: So, if the program has, for example, World War III in it, then it will happen and I can only change my attitude to it?

Answer: No, we can change the course of history itself.

Comment: This is confusing if all states are predetermined.
