The Punishment For Laziness

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” 26:34: Then, the land will be appeased regarding its sabbaticals. During all the days that it remains desolate while you are in the land of your enemies, the Land will rest and thus appease its sabbaticals.

Eretz (land) is Ratzon (desire). If we are not engaged with the correction of our desires, certainly there must be some kind of punishment for the opportunities and the conditions that we missed, which are those needed for making a connection between us, for love, to gather together and to make it possible for the Creator to be revealed between us.

According to our unity and the pressure we create, He can be revealed between us with greater energy and in an abundance of revelation. If we don’t do this, then all kinds of negative situations that were used incorrectly accumulate, and then we pay our debt for this.

It is written, “Then, the land will be appeased regarding its sabbaticals. During all the days that it remains desolate…” This means that we didn’t work with our desires and now it is necessary to balance everything all at once and with one blow. This is received in the form of suffering.

Question: What is “the land will be appeased regarding its sabbaticals?”

Answer: The Sabbath is a seven day preparation for connection on a particular level. But if we neglect this, then as much as we didn’t carry out the connections, they remain negative and uncorrected (this could be the seventh year, the year of the Jubilee, and so forth), and become a very great debt.

How Can We Prevent Another Holocaust?

Dr. Michael LaitmanI am a son of Holocaust survivors who were among the few of the Laitman family who survived the Holocaust. Two thirds of my relatives were slaughtered in the death camps. I was born in 1946 and was raised under the dark shadow that the war left on my family and on the Jewish population in all of Eastern Europe.

For me the Holocaust isn’t some distant memory, but a painful reminder of what might happen to us. It is this thought that brings up the constant troubling question in me: How can we prevent another Holocaust?

I feel an ocean of hatred closing in on us. The external signs have never been clearer and international reports indicate an upsurge in anti-Semitism. On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a question was brought up on the BBC as to whether the time has come to cease talking about the Holocaust, and about a month ago, there was supposed to be a scientific convention in England about the legitimacy of the State of Israel. If this is not enough, an agreement regarding the use of nuclear weapon has recently been signed with Iran, which is more evidence as to why we must not rely on our allies.

It is hard to ignore the clear warning signals as to what is expected. So how can we prevent another Holocaust? In addition to lamenting about the past, we must make room for close scrutiny, examination, and the correction of our current state. We live in a closed system of forces that operate according to the law of connection. When we are compatible with that law, we feel good, and when we are divided and separated, this system, like any other system in nature, forces us to balance ourselves. Sometimes correcting this direction can involve great suffering.

I am aware of how difficult it may be for Holocaust survivors and their families to read what I say, but still the truth must be said. The Holocaust took place because the Israeli nation didn’t keep the law of connection. Why us? Because we have a special responsibility to keep this law. We have a role that was given to us back in the days of Abraham. When egoism tore the people of ancient Babylon apart, our forefather discovered the law that governs our reality, which is the law of connection. The few that learned the method of connection from him became the nation of Israel.

Keeping the law of connection is our life’s goal, and passing on the method of connection and unity is the only justification for our existence as a nation. At the beginning of the 20th century we received an opportunity to return to the land of Israel, not in order to build a home for the Jewish people, but in order to connect within it. The Jews didn’t take this opportunity and preferred to isolate themselves in their communities in Europe or to integrate within general society. The reaction of the upper system to these actions was the Holocaust. A moment before the world drowned in blood, Kabbalists still cried out that we had to return to our land and unite, but the Jews didn’t listen. Instead of willingly moving closer, the terrible afflictions of the Holocaust brought us closer to one another, and it was as a result of the Holocaust that we received a country.

With all due respect to the United Nations, the real mandate for the existence of this country is our role. The county we received, as Kabbalists say, is only an opportunity to keep the law of connection, which is exactly what the world demands of us. Subconsciously, the world wants us to unite and to also pass Abraham’s method on to them. But we refuse to connect, and this is the source of the hatred they feel towards us.

Holocaust Remembrance Day and Independence Day have to become days in which we all engage in our role as a nation, and they must also be days of reexamining the essence of our existence. During these days, we have to gather in tens of thousands of roundtables throughout the country and talk about the only way of being truly independent—independent of our ego and connected to one another through love of others. This is the only way we can secure our future and our children’s future.

Unity Is A Wonder Drug For Anti-Semitism
How Could Such A Thing Have Happened

Together We Amplify The Voltage Of Bestowal

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Does it turn out that nothing exists other than spiritual reality?

Answer: Certainly. This is the same reality in which we are now found, and we begin to see how the higher power works within it. There are only two forces: the force of desire and the higher force that clothes it.

These forces are beginning to be more and more noticeable as we see that they are the only forces working within reality, that they have no substance, it is also energy. The physicists claim that the world is a field of forces and matter doesn’t exist.

Studies show that there is energy and power within matter. So matter has no significance, and yet it exists. Only after all the inhabitants of this world are connected to the network and reveal that they are acting in a field of reception and the force of bestowal, will all matter completely fade and disappear from this world, which is called “imaginary.” However, this will only happen in the future, with the general completion of correction.

Question: From where does a person get the power to connect everything together and see the true reality?

You cannot do anything alone. You cannot change your perception, get used to the right picture nor study it. This is possible only if you are found in the appropriate environment that is working towards this, and in which each individual, along with everyone else, together understand that they must build the appropriate network of connection for discovering the upper Light.

We must at all times, work among us to transform into a single Kli, into a single system and constantly develop it, adding to it through more and more interactions. The Light will accordingly be revealed within the Kli  through ascents and descents, which will also become increasingly synchronized together. We begin to feel interconnected and have more influence on each other.

Each one will see how much his character, his soul, his inner potential, becomes accommodated to everyone else, while some of them rise and some of them descend. Even though all of us advance together and go through ascents and descents, each one acts according to his character, like various components acting within a single electrical system. One is a resistor, another is a capacitor, and the third is a coil.

Each one goes through an ascent, but the ascent in a capacitor and a coil are completely different, for in a capacitor this is expressed in changes in potential and in a coil this is expressed in an electrical field. The ascent is expressed in a different form according to the root of the soul, and in principle, all are passing through the same situation.

And since there are so many differences between us, it could be that there is an incessant ascent without descents. For each may be in an ascent or descent in regard to everyone else, but it is considered to be an ascent in regard to himself. An electrical charge constantly moves from place to place, but every change is for the improvement of the ascent, constantly raising the voltage within the system and raising it gradually.

At the moment, there is no connection between us, and because of this lack of connection, each one of us ascends and descends. But if we connect, then we no longer have such descents.  As it is written, …and the children of Israel sighed from the labor, …. (Exodus 2:23). This wasn’t darkness due to a lack of connection, but due to a lack of bestowal. But this was actually an ascent, for by each one connecting with the others, each one took the others’ work upon himself. A minus in one place is compensated by a plus in another place, and vice versa. So everyone is ascending. Therefore, if we are connected, there are no more descents, only ascents!

Since you are connected with the other components within a system, it is as if you are transforming alternating current into direct current. The only thing we lack is connection. We aren’t working on this enough.

Perceiving The Future Together

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Do animals feel nature as one system in which everything is connected?

Answer: Yes, they feel it at their level.

Question: And can they feel the future, for exactly that reason?

Answer: Animals can only feel some kind of threat to their life, but they are not able rise above the worry of their regular, beastly existence. This is called instinct.

Animals feel the connection to the general system, but for them it provides only the information at the level of animate. Animals know what will happen, thus they are more careful than men and their behavior is more logical.

Animals don’t make mistakes! They have all the required information in order to exist, which is called natural instinct. Man is lacking this.

Question: If I had such instinct, would it be possible that my life would be better? Maybe I wouldn’t be overdrawn at the bank, wouldn’t have an ulcer, and wouldn’t be living in constant tension.

Answer: That’s a good question. What is preferable? Since if you had such instinct, then you would be an animal and not a man. Animals have all the information for a good life, i.e., the feeling of connection with the goal of creation. And man doesn’t have this at all. Why? Because at the speaking level one doesn’t automatically receive connection to the goal of creation, but must acquire it through self development.

Every person has this potential, but one needs to advance gradually. You cannot catch the occasional passerby and begin to convince him that he needs to do this. A person needs to be ready for this. If he feels that he must know the future, then I am able to teach him how to do this.

Comment: I am ready for learning! I really must know the future because that will solve all the problems for me, and explain to me how to behave towards my children and my wife and what profession to choose.

Answer: You will know everything! If you have such a burning question that brings you to despair and demands a reply, then this is a sign that you can do this.

At the end of the course for integral education (the wisdom of connection), you will come to the sensation that all people are inseparable parts of the same system, without any difference between them, including yourself. And in the beginning, it is enough to reach this feeling towards a stranger, not towards a family member.

Question: Meaning, if I feel towards a stranger as I do myself, then based on that I will create within me the ability to see the future?

Answer: Yes. You will feel the integral sensation, exit from within your ego, and sense me, for example. You must feel me as you do yourself. If you are able to feel something outside yourself as yourself, then the whole of reality opens up before you. You open your senses and you can see all your surroundings in a real way.

Question: Why can’t I learn integral thought by myself with the help of my intellect, without needing someone else?

Answer: For whom do you exit yourself if not for someone else? This is not abstract philosophy, but it requires a lot of practice and many actions with whose help we examine all the “pros “ and “cons.” It isn’t simple. After all we need to exist beyond the feeling of our “I.” That is the first condition of integral thought.

When I exit my “I,” I begin to feel who is outside of me, and to the same extent, I feel everything else. I open the extent of my feelings, from the level of my five senses to a complete reality.

Global Revolution
Four Levels Of Freedom And Servitude
Grow To Be Human

Servants Of Their Own Freewill

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” 25:39 – 25:41: And if your brother becomes destitute with you, and is sold to you, do not work him with slave labor. As an employee or a [hired] resident, he shall be with you; until the Jubilee year he shall work with you. Then, he shall leave you he, and his children with him, and he shall return to his family and resume the status of his fathers.

If I have desires that are not ready to exist separately, I must keep them with me and with all seriousness, “stand them on their feet.” After finishing all the work on the entire cluster of desires, they detach and move away from me independently and continue their independent existence.

We are always talking about desires and not about bodies. This speaks about a schema in which an immense desire exploded into 600,000 parts that must be reconnected with each other to transform again into one general whole, even though egosim and mutual rejection is burning within them. All of this remains, but it is covered and neutralized through love.

It follows that this tremendous ego and tremendous love, which is created between them thanks to the ego, remain and gather intensity, inner attainment, and inner unity with the Creator. Therefore, all the problems are only needed to reveal more obviously the state of our unification with the Creator. Everything revolves around this; there isn’t anything else.

Servants are those desires that cannot be independent, so they seem to have been sold into slavery. That is, I agree that that it is necessary for me, like a small child,  to be ruled by someone great, because there is evil in me and I want someone more mature than me to manage me, otherwise I will go on in a bad way. So, I agree with this voluntarily.

A person who cannot serve and take care of his ego by himself is subordinate to another person (a greater ego) and if adhered to him, is ready to work with him for his ego, because in this case, the one who is greater will protect him and take care of him. This is like a child who compensates his parents by giving them pleasure. That is how nature created us. I give my parents pleasure and in exchange they take care of me. And if nature hadn’t created me such that merely through my existence I gave pleasure to my parents, they would not be concerned about taking care of me. So the servant gives pleasure to his master and is ready to work for his sake. And the master takes responsibility for him, for his life and the satisfaction of his needs.

In our world, we incorrectly understand slavery. Slavery is a state that one enters with his own free will. As long as I want to be a servant, I remain a servant. And if I prove that I want to be freed from the shackles of servitude, this will happen immediately. We see this in the example of the Exodus from Egypt, which represents egoistic servitude. If you want to abandon the ego, then please, all that remains is to show your desires: what you are ready for.

Am I ready to live independently, without the ego, and get fulfillment and food for myself, to work on the development of this process? Do I understand that this is not for the sake of the ego, but for the sake of the Creator? How must this be realized? If I show proof of all of this, then the way is open.

Question: But from a spiritual point of view, a servant wants to have a master, for this is sweet for him, this is a good situation. Why should he leave it?

Answer: Incidentally, that is how it was. Slavery was not submission and subjugation! But I have to show that I have matured, that I want to and can take care of myself and my family. I no longer have a need for a master who manages me; I am ready to manage myself. And the ego that controls me, whispers to me: “What do you want this for, why? Live in comfort!”

We see that seven billion people want to be slaves. There is no one who wants to become independent in place of the Creator, meaning to care about everyone. Nobody wants this! Everyone wants the conventional material prosperity, swirling among them, helping each other within their little closed circle. This is their small world, and what is outside of it doesn’t interest them. After all, in a small circle, I feel everyone else like myself. Whereas in a large circle, I need to go outside of the boundaries of my self. It follows that society has not yet developed sufficiently.

I feel partnership only with someone who is equal to me and I am not ashamed of that. The main thing is that I will be like him and he will be like me. We aspire to it and pay careful attention to this. The entire goal of our existence is to feed our beast (the physical body), and bring a person to a state of absolute equality with everyone. This creates a very interesting situation, a natural communism, where people exist according to the laws of nature, satisfied with only the minimum necessities of existence.

Suppose that I raised carrots, cabbage, and potatoes in my garden. For the winter I have five sacks of potatoes, two sacks of cabbage and I don’t need anything more. Why should I work anymore and toil for someone else? Would it be for how the neighbors will look at this?! Why should I suddenly tear down the borders of my circle? That is how we live.

Comment: It is amazing, but 70% – 80% of people really don’t even want to expand their plot of land, because what they have is sufficient for them.

Answer: And this is a natural communism that is revealed on the animal level. After all, animals in the forest search for their food for for that day, and the next day they search for something else. Whereas among people, this is revealed a bit differently. They know in advance what they minimally need to live.

Is it possible to rise above this state? It must try to do so with the help of the wisdom of Kabbalah, that begins developing desires not in a negative direction, in the direction of the ego, but in a positive direction, towards altruism. Equally altruistic and egoistic components will grow in people. That is how they gradually grow.

Comment: It is interesting that sociologists have tried to awaken people, calling upon them to develop a business and realizing that they cannot motivate them to do this.

Answer: Business for people like these symbolizes going out of their normal balance. They feel that they are in the right situation that is good for them; they don’t need anything more. They have something to wear, something to eat, and this is enough. And if something is broken somewhere, they will do a little fixing, put in some kind of board and that is how they will continue to live. As said in a Russian proverb: “A peasant will not cross himself before it begins to thunder.” Only an urgent need will force him to do something.

The wisdom of Kabbalah speaks precisely about this level, but not in such an anarchistic form when a persons completely irrelevant. It explains that the correct next state of humanity is concern for oneself and others. But this is only on a level of existence necessary for living; everything else is directed towards spiritual development.

So, if Kabbalists come to these people and will work on their inner development, without taking them out of the same good situation they are in, then the soul will begin to be developed in them. If a person works for himself, believing that he have nothing more, he will continue to work for himself, and the Kabbalists will develop a his soul, adding spiritual egoism, not physical.

Question: Is it possible to call the present existence of these people slavery?

Answer: No, for these people have a feeling of freedom. I take care of myself, I help my neighbor because he will help me in turn. We depend upon each other. We are like one family. I don’t think about more than this. So I am free!

Question: And if we add a spiritual component to this, is it possible to expand the circle gradually?

Answer: No. It is not necessary to expand the circle, but only to increase the connection between people. After all, people live to feel goodness in themselves and enjoy each other. But in fact, it is specifically the Kabbalists who make this component of pleasure among them.

At The Foot Of The Mountain

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe weekly section of the Torah BaHar (On the Mount) tells us about the laws that the Creator gave the nation through Moses. These are laws that a person has to fulfill inside him. There is a mountain of egoism in each of us, which is the same Tower of Babel but is now depicted to us as Mount Sinai (Sina – hatred).

The upper force is above its summit and it helps us fulfill the ego and turn it into a holy mountain, into the Temple Mount. Then we build the Temple upon it, the Creator is revealed in the vessel above our ego.

If we stand at the foot of the mountain and are ready to love one another, to be mutually responsible for one another, and to be as one man in one heart, we receive the Light of correction called the Torah, and then we can transform the whole mountain of hatred into a mountain of love. It is only on top of it that we can build the house of the Lord.

During the giving of the Torah, only Moses can ascend Mount Sinai. Then it completely loses its holiness completely, as Mount Sinai is holy only when a person receives the Torah. Otherwise it is just a pile of egosm. This is why the Torah tells us allegorically how to turn the mountain of hatred into a holy mountain on which we build the Temple.

The Situation In Europe Is Reminiscent Of The Days Of Hitler

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (riafan.ru):The Ombudsman for Human Rights in the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the tolerance shown by the West regarding the appearance of anti-Semitism, Nazism and xenophobia has become the reason for the renewed departure of the Jews from the European nations today.

“The situation is developing on a large scale and is already close to a critical situation. Human rights activists warn specifically that anti-Semitism has become the reason for the flight of the Jews from the nations of the European Union to Israel. The West, together with neo-Nazism, is reminiscent of the 1930s in Germany during the last century.

“During the time of Hitler and the Nazi regime, the Jews had nowhere to flee, while the tolerance to the appearance of xenophobia and Nazism of the governments and many Western powers led to the deaths of millions of people. The politicians of the European Union and the United States must remember the lessons of history and not help in falsifying history for lying scientists and the rest of the extremists.”

My Comment: I think that everything is happening according to the plan of the general egoistic development of humanity, which must bring a wave of anti-Semitism and general mutual hatred. The people of Israel will be the focus of this universal hatred. This appearance of egoism as total evil is necessary for activating pressure on the Jews, forcing them to implement the method of uniting humanity and in this unity, the discovery of the Creator.

Pesach Is A Special Holiday

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can we acquire the force called Moses? After all, you say that it doesn’t exist in nature.

Answer: Moses (from the Hebrew word “Moshech” –  to pull) is the attribute that awakens in us and raises us from the bottom of Mt. Sinai to its summit, to the peak of the general hatred. When a person climbs above it, he attains the Creator who is at the peak.

It is impossible to bypass this mountain; we must climb it. This is the way for the entire world. Today, all of humanity is at the foot of Mt. Sinai, surrounded by the enormous hate that separates us. But at the same time, the method called the Torah is revealed. The Torah is the Light that Reforms at the summit of the mountain.

We don’t have to make any special efforts, and there is nothing to fear. When we acquire the enormous hatred, we are at the bottom of the mountain where we receive the method by which we gradually can ascend by mutually complementing and helping one another.

Then, Mt Sinai becomes the temple mount, at the top of which there is the temple, the place where the Creator is revealed.

This is basically the essence of Pesach (Passover). This is the reason that the calendar of the nation, of the new humanity, begins on this holiday.

Before the receiving of the Torah, mankind developed like animals, but from that moment onward, there was a connection with the Creator, with the force that can raise us continuously above the ego and help us climb the mountain of hatred by getting closer to one another.

At the same time, we attain the Creator to a greater degree, because two forces already appear in us, the egoistic force and the altruistic force. When we build ourselves from these two forces a state called the attainment of the Creator or the soul appears between them.

The two forces descend from above, and we make efforts not to mutually annul them but to connect them by placing our resistance between them, trying to recreate the harmony between them by connecting and adding all the disconnected parts. Then this harmony creates our soul, our upper existence.

This is the reason that we consider Pesach to be the major and most important holiday, because symbolizes the beginning of the creation of man, Adam, (from the Hebrew “Domeh” – to resemble the Creator).

There are, of course, many subtleties, laws, and different nuances that only speak of how to properly cover the ego with the attribute of love, and that’s all. Everything comes down only to this!

We can study this holiday down to the smallest detail, about why eating certain things is allowed and why eating other things is forbidden, about why Pesach is seven days, why we drink four glasses of wine, and why there are other customs that are described in the Haggadah.

However, these are merely actions that we must perform on every level to create the right connection between plus and minus, which are the attributes of receiving and bestowal, hate and love. We cover the hate with love, and together they will give us the sense of attainment, adhesion to the Creator.

Thus, we don’t simply come out of a small ego to love, but from our world to a perfect eternal world. This is the reason that Pesach is indeed a special holiday.

Passover Shows Us There Is No Room For Separation

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe beginning of this post can be found in: Passover Is A Reminder Of The Future

Abraham’s group moved to Canaan. The ego then grew from one generation to the next, but the main thing was to keep the general connection, the spiritual brotherhood.

Later, the disputes and conflicts grew to such an extent that even Jacob’s sons, the brothers, couldn’t overcome them. This process is described in the Torah as the beginning of the famine. The brothers sell Joseph into slavery in Egypt, (Mitzrayim), which symbolizes one’s evil nature (Yetzer-Ra). When they fell from the level of brotherly love, they found themselves under the domination of the ego, Pharaoh.

At first this domination was good: Pharaoh raised Joseph and life was full of different pleasures, but then things changed and people began to feel that corporeal benefits and pleasures were not everything in life.

They felt a deficiency for a spiritual connection, which Pharaoh, of course, objected to and resisted. Now all the ego’s efforts were not to allow them to maintain even one bit of inner unity.

It seemed as if there was no way out, but it is actually the despair that generated the force that pulled them to unity—Moses. He was brought up in Pharaoh’s home, the ego, and was therefore ready to confront the king of Egypt. This spark that kept the essence of the Jewish soul lives in each of us. It is the general, inclusive perspective of a united world in which there is no room for separation.

Modern Babylon

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: The Jewish nation has gone through a special transformation, the transition from slavery to freedom, to which the feast of Pesach (Passover) is dedicated. What is the meaning of this transformation?

Answer: The meaning of liberation from slavery is acquiring the power of love due to exiting from one’s egoism. We are under the control of the system that advances us, especially given under the power of our egoism, which is called Pharaoh.

First, we feel good in this bondage, but then realize that we are in exile and are slaves to the egoism that rules over us absolutely. We do not agree with this authority and wish to escape from it, from the bad attitudes towards each other, because we see that in this form, it is impossible to move on and exist.

After many failed attempts, we become convinced that nothing can be done and only a miracle can save us. Indeed, egoism is killing us to the extent that we do not see success in anything in our lives in any way. In this way, Pharaoh’s rule between us is manifested.

That is the situation we see today in Israel. There are 23 political parties in a little country, huge gaps between different layers of the population, crisis in the education system, an increasing divorce rate, and growing use of drugs. Half of the citizens would be willing to move to another country if given the chance.

Our unkind attitude to each other can be seen from the behavior on the roads and elsewhere. We are divided by indifference to others and pride. Egoism reigns within us and makes us act in this way. It is not our fault, but it is our nature that plays with us.

One must realize that our nature is the evil inclination, which enslaves us. If we do not get out of it, then our lives will be over and we will not leave behind anything good for our children. Life will become worse and they will not have even those crumbs of happiness that we once had.

This is slavery, and the Passover Haggadah tells us how to escape it to reach freedom. But above all, we need to understand that we are in slavery. After all, while you see yourself in the darkness of egoism that separates us through mutual hatred, it is impossible to understand the reality of freedom from this angel of death.

We have to desire to become a free people in our own country, independent of our desire. We need to wish to achieve love, connection, mutual guarantee, and unity between everyone above our egoistic nature.

The people of Israel once escaped its egoism and rose to a height of unity and love, which is called the building of the Temple. But then we were not able to remain at that height and fell from it.

Rabbi Akiva taught that you cannot leave the principle of love for others as oneself; otherwise, we will again fall back to unfounded hatred. Egypt is the state of causeless hatred between us. After the destruction of the Second Temple 2,000 year ago, we returned to this state of hatred, which is called Egypt.

After thousands of years of living in unity and connection, the Jewish people again went to Egypt, to unfounded hatred. But today the whole world must realize that we are in Egypt.

Once, a small group led by Abraham left Babylon and became united into the people of Israel. But then it went back to Babylon and mingled with all the Babylonians. Today, we again find ourselves facing the same Tower of Babel and are confronted with hatred towards each other and the unwillingness to know and understand others. This is called a confusion of the tongues.

Once again, we have to make the same action as was once performed in ancient Babylon. It is said that acts of the fathers are an example for their sons. Today, we once more need to exit from Egypt, but this will be the last exile before the final liberation.
