The “Mixed Multitude” And Manna From Heaven

Laitman_632_4The Torah, “Numbers” 11:1 – 11:6: The people were looking to complain, and it was evil in the ears of the Lord. The Lord heard and His anger flared, and a fire from the Lord burned among them, consuming the extremes of the camp. The people cried out to Moses; Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire died down He named that place Tab’erah, for the fire of the Lord had burned among them there.

But the multitude among them began to have strong cravings. Then even the children of Israel once again began to cry, and they said, “Who will feed us meat? We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt free of charge, the cucumbers, the watermelons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now, our bodies are dried out, for there is nothing at all; we have nothing but manna to look at.”

For what reason did the people begin to complain? After all, they had no presumptions prior to this.

It was because there was a “mixed multitude” among them. It means that all of the desires of the people still had not been purified of egosim since there were desires like these among them that are called the mixed multitude. They were afraid of the Creator, but worked for themselves, for their Pharaoh.

Imagine a person who has fear of the Creator and carries out everything that is said in the holy books, in the prayer books, and the Shulchan Aruch. What for? “I am carrying out everything that you told me to do, so you should be carrying out what you promised me!” This is called the mixed multitude.

The person apparently is living near to the Creator, and supposedly is providing himself with a future paradise. He could even die, knowing that nirvana (complete rest) is waiting for him. There are known cases when they stopped terrorists at the last minute, and they shouted that they wanted to die. This is because they already were ready to enter paradise in the next minute.

The mixed multitude tempts the people—meaning, desires that exist in every person—and they begin to complain. It didn’t get what it needs. The entire movement in the wilderness is a movement within nothing. The person doesn’t get anything, he must move forward, and that is all. They only give him a small sign, a small imaginary cloud that he is going toward something.

When will he be able to feel the presence of the Creator more clearly? It is when he violates something and gets it in his head, “Oh! I now am convinced that this is forbidden.” So, it follows that it is necessary to do something. These egoistic desires say, “We don’t want to be satisfied with a request to the Creator.”

For what was the intention of the MAN in the wilderness? It is specifically thanks to my being in the wilderness and having nothing. From a state of complete hopelessness, I can find the one and only way, the way to the Creator. I have no one else to whom to turn, and when I turn to Him, this is called MAN.

This means that MAN is the raising of my prayer, my request specifically to the Creator and only in the wilderness! Only when I am completely empty and I have nothing—not for the sake of the body, not for the sake of what is coming, and not even for the sake of the world to come—then I can turn to Him and I am filled with this. This turning to the Creator fills me.

In fact, I don’t get anything other than a unilateral connection with the Creator. If I act like this, then manna comes to me from Heaven. I am nourished by this, and I begin to fill my soul.

However, it is filled only through my turning to the Creator! So, this is not talking about MAD, about fulfillment from above (the answer of the Creator), but specifically about the imaginary, unilateral turning, without an answer that is not based on anything for the Creator, from a state of hopelessness.

If I don’t want any favors and pleasures from the world, if I don’t want anything other than a wilderness that makes it possible for me to turn to Him unilaterally (when, in general, I don’t know if I am turning or not), this is enough for me. This fills my soul. If I can move forward in this manner, then I enter the wilderness and pass through it.

It is said that there were all kinds of tastes in the manna. So, everything that I feel in the manna depends on how much I can join my egoistic desires to my relationship with the Creator. Then, according to this, I will feel that I am filled with all kinds of things.

“Is The Lord’s Hand Short?”

Laitman_049_01The Torah, “Numbers” 11:21 – 11:23: Moses said, “Six hundred thousand people on foot are the people in whose midst I am, and You say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat it for a full month’?

If sheep and cattle were slaughtered for them, would it suffice for them? If all the fish of the sea were gathered for them, would it suffice for them?”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Is My power limited? Now you will see if My word comes true for you or not!”

Moses is doubtful whether the meat will suffice for all the people because he isn’t the attribute of receiving but the attribute of bestowal.

The Sefira of Bina cannot assess the Light of Hochma that goes through it because the Light is felt only below in Malchut.

This is the reason that it isn’t important for Moses, but he simply cannot imagine how such an infinite abyss of egoism that is hungry for meat can be filled. The Creator, on the other hand, reassures him: “Is the Lord’s hand short?” After all, He is the Light of Hochma.

Clearing The Way To Unity

Laitman_931-01The Torah, “Numbers” 11:18 – 11:20: And to the people, you shall say, ‘Prepare yourselves for tomorrow and you shall eat meat, because you have cried in the ears of the Lord saying, “Who will feed us meat, for we had it better in Egypt.” [Therefore,] the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat.

You shall eat it not one day, not two days, not five days, not ten days, and not twenty days.

But even for a full month until it comes out your nose and nauseates you. Because you have despised the Lord Who is among you, and you cried before Him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”‘”

The Creator promises to feed the children of Israel with their ego saying: “first it will seem good to you, but when you reach a state that you cannot overcome the ego, it will begin to overflow on all sides, and you will look for a way to restrain it and will not find an answer, and the ego will begin to manage and control you. Thus, reluctantly you will advance towards death, suffering,, and illness and will see how your children hurt themselves and die before your very eyes. You will not be able to escape anywhere! Everything that is dear to you: your parents, your children, and your grandchildren will suffer terribly for a very long time. They will wish to die but will not be able to. This is what your ego will do to you.”

The Prophets said that righteous women will cook their children and eat them. A person’s internal egoism will force him to behave this way. This is where we are headed and everything may happen like the Prophets said if we don’t turn to the right line in time, in the direction of connection and unity so that the MAN will begin to descend upon us.

Ascending above the ego isn’t death at all. Death is the freedom from a meaningless existence. Today many of us would gladly give up this life: it is better not to be born at all than to live this way. But a person cannot die. A person spins around in a whirlpool of great problems; he will crawl and hold on with his fingernails and scratch himself until he bleeds, but he will not be able to do anything with himself. He will dream of dying but to no avail.

When he finds himself on the verge of death, under such mental afflictions, he will gradually begin to understand his egoistic nature, until he is determined to get rid of it, but it isn’t immediate and just like that. He will have to go through this road to the end because he follows it according to the method of punishments and sufferings. On the other hand, everything happens in a totally different manner along the path of the Light: the Light shines and you see that on the one side there is a black abyss that swallows everything, and on the other side there is the Light. Along the path of suffering, on the other hand, there is no Light, you don’t see anything but great emptiness full of sufferings and you want to die every minute because wholeness seems like a great gift to you.

Therefore, the Creator’s answer to the request to feed the people meat is very hard: you will continuously eat meat until you are sick of it and then you will come to your senses. This means that you will follow the path of suffering until you understand that your egoistic life is death itself, and the Creator that you abhor is the attribute of love and bestowal. Try to change and choose one of the two: either the path of the ego or the path of love.

For the first time in history we are at this crossroad. We see how the world’s natural, bonded, internal, anti-Semitism is revealed. The nations of the world will all begin to hate us instinctively without exception. They will oppose us, thus baring their teeth like wolves. It isn’t their will but the doing of the upper Providence that operates through them. It isn’t aimed at anything but only at our ego. If we change it to the attribute of love and bestowal we will see only good loving people before us.

We can do it!

Seventy Sages: A System Of Mutual Connection

laitman_933The Torah, “Numbers” 11:16 – 11:17: And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Gather unto Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with thee.

And I will come down and speak with thee there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.’

The Creator reassures Moses that the rage will not be poured unto him alone and that he will not carry the burden of the people by himself but that it will be shared by all the elders who will come in direct contact with the people, while Moses will teach the seventy elders and govern all the tribes by them.

The point is that when egoism begins grow inside us there is a need for a whole structure of connection with the Creator and all our modification and our improvement comes down to establishing it. In a family, for example, everything is managed by the head of the family; in an apartment building everything is managed by the condominium association; in a village there is a small managing board; in the city there is the municipality, and in a state thousands of people are involved in it, which means that the bigger our egoism grows the greater the need for the mutual connection between all the people and the upper force, the Creator.

If very large egoism is revealed among the people, the people begin to complain by turning to Moses: “We don’t want to advance; we would rather go back to the animal level. Take us back to Pharaoh and take the Creator.” It is one of the two: either Bina or Malchut, either money or the Upper Light.

This is the reason that there is suddenly the need for coordination because there has to be a conductor that connects Moses and the people. In this case the seventy sages, which is a whole system of mutual cooperation, are between them.

And I will come down and speak with thee there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee and will put it upon them… this means that the elders will ascend spiritually and thus will be able to be totally connected to each other.

They are able to take the upper Light and divide it to seventy parts (which means seven Sefirot: Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, Malchut; in each if which there are ten Sefirot, which is a total of seventy), and to lead them to the people and show the people that they should unite and connect.

Seventy sages actually set the example for connection and unity: they are all different and opposite from one another as seventy spiritual roots. Eventually, like roots in the ground, they absorb all the people that stem from them in a chain reaction downwards. This is the reason that the seventy sages/seventy spiritual roots can set an example and strengthen the unity of the nation.

In the past, the Sanhedrin composed of seventy sages governed the state and thanks to the unity between them they could reach a consensus.

Everything that exists in the spiritual roots is reflected in the corporeal world. Therefore, there is this connection both in our souls and in our spiritual covenant.

There is the concept of a nation in each of us: first there is all of humanity, then the nation of Israel, and then its division to the Levites, the priests, the seventy sages, and Moses.  We all have to be equal in this schema and to put it together between us in the corporeal world so that we will understand that it exists inside us.

An Unchangeable Law Of Nature

Laitman_707The Creator is the higher general law of nature. It is described in the Torah how Moses would shout when he turned to the Creator, but there was nobody to whom to turn. As it is written, “A voice calls … in the wilderness” (Isaiah 40:3).

In general, we convey our images, impressions, and our mutual relationship with the Creator exactly the way we would convey our anger to a malfunctioning computer.

However, in fact, the higher power is an unchangeable law of nature, and so it is written, “He issued a decree, which will not change” (Psalms 148:6). So, there is no one to whom to turn except yourself!

There exists an immutable program within which we are found, and we must work within it. Otherwise, we strive and take pains until we reach an awareness of how to continue to go on.

Nothing will change for the better if we don’t work on ourselves to reach a good connection with others and, moreover, with everyone! Neither good relationships in the family nor even with all people will help us. Egoistic alliances will not help here; everything must be absolutely altruistic.

We need to work beyond of ourselves, outside of all egoistic calculations. That is how we hold onto everyone, only with altruistic connections.

One Step On The Way To Wholeness

laitman_749_03The Torah, “Numbers” 11:15: [Moses said to the Lord,] If this is the way You treat me, please kill me if I have found favor in Your eyes, so that I not see my misfortune.

Moses is a characteristic that pulls us forward toward the goal of creation. Either it is killed, or the people follow it, meaning the ego kills one of the two.

Question: Why does Moses get so much pain from the people?

Answer: It is because he sees that greatness, wholeness, and eternity are waiting for them, whereas the people cannot understand what is prepared for them and take at least one step toward this! In addition, if everyone had taken this step together, he would not have had so much pain. The pain would have disappeared immediately.

The beginning of connection and union is just a psychological problem. We immediately feel what this gives, but our first breakthrough forward must happen through an inner split with the ego. However, a person is not ready to be detached from it, so he suffers.

Question: Did detachment from the ego begin with the plagues in Egypt?

Answer: No, the plagues in Egypt were necessary for splitting the Red Sea, meaning the partial departure from the ego and the beginning of working with it, and after that begins the movement through the wilderness when every step takes us further and further from the ego, approaching others more and more! We work in a constant internal tension: thinking about others, feeling them instead of myself, working for their sake.

This is a wilderness for the ego because there is no nourishment here from receiving for my own sake. Rather, everything is directed toward bestowal only.

Abundance Coming Down From Heaven

laitman_933The Torah, “Numbers” 11:9 – 11:10: When the dew descended on the camp at night, the manna would descend upon it.

Moses heard the people weeping with their families, each one at the entrance to his tent. The Lord became very angry, and Moses considered it evil.

The numerical value of the word “dew” in Hebrew is 39, which means that it includes 39 Lights that descend in the form of dew. Such a perfect appearance of the Light can actually correct all the poisons, wounds, and our egoistic flaws.

By the way, dew is a wonderful remedy in our world, but we just don’t know how to use it, whereas animals, birds, and insects collect the dew and drink it. If we followed the behavior of animals and developed our medicines on the basis of their behavior we would be healthy, but instead we fill ourselves with manmade medicines.

The Torah, “Numbers,” 11: 11-15: Moses said to the Lord, “Why have You treated Your servant so badly? Why have I not found favor in Your eyes that You place the burden of this entire people upon me?

Did I conceive this entire people? Did I give birth to them, that You say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom as the nurse carries the suckling,’ to the Land You promised their forefathers?

Where can I get meat to give all these people? For they are crying on me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat.’

Alone I cannot carry this entire people for it is too hard for me.

If this is the way You treat me, please kill me if I have found favor in Your eyes, so that I not see my misfortune.”

It isn’t easy to follow the spiritual path because we have to discover all the problems and ask for their correction. Yet no one wants to do that and this is the reason the people complain, crying and asking, “Give us meat.”

If you want meat, please take it! After all, the manna can have different tastes. What difference does it make? The type of food makes no difference. Even today we eat one thing but feel the food as something else.

Very soon we will print everything one can think of by a three-dimensional printer and we will only have to push a button and receive anything that we want.

Isn’t that manna? It is actually the same thing. The only difference is that all this will be harmful for us because there is simple sawdust soaked in different flavors and additives in the cartridges of these printers.

And Moses said that this is the wrong way. We have to choose the natural way and not ask for ordinary meat but draw the Upper Light that actually contains everything in it. But the people refuse to do so and don’t want it.

Question: Does this mean that the people have nostalgic memories about the life in Egypt?

Answer: It isn’t nostalgia but a desire to go back to working in their egoism: “We don’t want to follow the path of connection and unity. It is a desert for us: it is tasteless, difficult, and burdensome. Give us meat, which is what the ego depicts, we want to live on that level; no one needs the 39 Lights, it is too much for us.”

Comment: The people’s complaints trouble Moses who cries out to the Creator: “Why have You treated Your servant so badly? Why have I not found favor in Your eyes that You place the burden of this entire people upon me?”

Answer: It isn’t about an old leader who is about 80 already and who has lived his last 40 years in the desert leading the people.

Moses is our most ancient attribute that leads us through the egoistic desert to the land of Israel, which means to unity. There is nothing else we can do here. In fact there is no other way out. We either advance towards annihilation and a massacre, or according to the laws of nature ascend to the next level.

We think that we choose our own future, but it isn’t so. No one knows what the future brings, so how can one choose? It is a kids’ game.

In fact everything is predetermined and the goal is already known, we only have to decide how to reach it: either in the best and shortest way or by objecting and stubbornly refusing like a donkey, and then you will be beaten until you grow wiser.

The word “donkey” in Hebrew “Hamor” stems from the word “Homer” – “matter. ” The matter of our world is egoism and it is according to this matter that we advance at the moment.

We are ready for any kind of work except for summoning the Upper Light because it only comes according to the level of our unity. When we get closer to one another it is revealed and the more we draw apart from one another and separate from one another because of our ego, it disappears.

In our state we only need to begin to connect and then the Upper Light will immediately descend unto us from Above. We will immediately begin to feel where life is revealed, what it means, where we are headed and what the future of all mankind will be, but we need to connect and unite in order to do so.

“Wisdom Among The Gentiles, Believe It”

Laitman_167Moses’s arguments persuaded Jethro to leave his children in the camp of the Jews. The grandchildren of Jethro entered the land of Israel, and as Moses promised, they received the fertile lands of Jericho and its surroundings.

Ultimately, they became prominent masters of knowledge in Torah. The descendants of Jethro became famous as the leaders of the Sanhedrin, teaching Torah to the entire community of Israel (Midrash Mesaper, Parshat Beha’alotcha).

Those among the nations of the world who had the greatest egoistic desires and succeeded in correcting them became the greatest of the generation. They became higher and greater than the leaders of the tribes, as in the example of Rabbi Akiva.

According to its root, Israel is Galgalta ve Eynayim, the easiest and purest desires that cannot absorb the Light of Hochma into them, whereas the nations of the world, when they receive this method from Israel and correct themselves, they discover a very great Light of Hochma. So, it is written, “If someone says that there is wisdom among the gentiles, believe it” (Eicha Rabbah 2:13) because it exists in a stage of correction.

The nations of the world who attain the concept of “Israel” join the people of Israel to become a bridge for their people. Israel itself cannot become such a bridge since to do this it would have to become AHP de Aliyah, which is an ascent from below to above.

So, it is imperative to disseminate the wisdom of Kabbalah to the entire world.

laitman_943The Torah, “Numbers” 11:7 – 11:8: Now the manna was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of bdellium. The people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and seethed it in pots, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was as the taste of a cake baked with oil.

Humans are a part of the animate world. Many scientists affirm and verify this with their research.

Even though human society is distinguished by science, culture, and education, it is impossible to say that this is found above the level of the beast. We live, as it is said, “according to concepts and ideas.” But the concepts we have are basically those of a beast, since we use absolutely the same methods as they in educational social and other aspects.

Comment: But this declaration arouses much opposition among people of faith.

Answer: I understand them, but I don’t think that a nightingale does anything less well than some musician, who may have a completely distorted view of human relations.

Art has no connection to the transcendence of a person! It is simply a gift that is given by nature that a person manifests. It is no more than that.

Together with this he can also invoke murder and fanaticism, expressing his point of view in a beautiful language. For example, the famous composer Wagner was consumed by hatred not only of Jews, but also to all of humanity.

So both physicists and poets, as well as those who work for the sake of war and those who work for the state police, rest assured thinking that they are above the beast.

Whereas a bird performs its natural function and certainly doesn’t harm anyone, just as a lion that preys on other animals doesn’t harm the environment because it functions as an ecological “janitor.”

Nature is a complete system, and it is necessary to approach it as a whole, without exception of the human being and without claiming that his apparently multifaceted activities on Earth go beyond the limits of ordinary nature. The only thing that goes beyond its limits is when he uses his ego to cause harm to himself and others.

So we differ from ancient people only from our greater negative aspect. Today this is already gradually being revealed, and I think that soon people will begin to agree with me. This is even though I still remember those times in Russia when there was a fear of suggesting such a thing, for this was against the concepts of progress and the bright future of the nation.

So it was thought that they were going “ahead of the world” both in the realm of ballet and the building of missiles and in the area of armaments. In general this was considered something of which to be proud.

But the idea is that all of this is attained by our ego and therefore only harms humanity. If we want to do something good, in our inventory there is only one good activity, raising MAN.

Raising MAN is the elevation of desire to bestowal and love, connection and union. And we must act in this direction, for the Upper Light that created us arrives in response to the MAN.

Besides this, it also created the ego in us so that with its help we would again ask for additional Upper Light. And when the Light descends upon us in answer to our desire, then it will begin to transform the ego to mutual benefit.

Then we will feel only pleasure in all the phenomena in life, in all the tastes, in every possible thing. About this it is said that the taste of the manna was “as the taste of a cake baked with oil.”

laitman_562_02Midrash Raba, “Behaalotcha“: Besides it (the MAN) also helped the judges solve complicated legal issues like to whom a slave belongs, for example. The judge would simply look on whose doorstep the slave’s MAN fell the following morning. The owner of the slave would be the person on whose doorstep the MAN fell.

The MAN solves every problem between people. By raising MAN we raise our prayer for the Upper Light to come and fill us and provide us with the understanding, recognition, wisdom, and ability to make the right decisions in the connection between us, health, and security. We ask that it should make us perfect, eternal, etc., which means without any flaws: physical, moral, or any other kind.

The Upper Light called MAD descends upon us in response to the MAN. It is described in the Torah as our movement, since when we move backwards to our initial state the MAD falls upon us as the white Light that corrects everything and brings us to the one whole state. This is the reason that MAN solves any issues and conflicts between people. All the problems disappear, but life doesn’t become tasteless, monotonous, or pointless as a result. On the contrary, we begin to see a great world before us, which we need to explore and in which we have to find flaws all the time and ask to see them as perfect. When we feel that we gradually become perfect we will also see that the world is more perfect.
