Know What Is In Your Heart

laitman_622_02Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:2: And you shall remember the entire way on which the Lord, your God, led you these forty years in the desert, in order to afflict you to test you, to know what is in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

The most important thing is that a person would know and go through this. Naturally, the Creator knows in advance what will happen to a person, even if he will or won’t be wrong. In other words, freewill exists for us when we think, “Should I act this way or that way?” However, for the Creator, this isn’t a question.

Even more, it is absolutely clear that a person will stumble. As it is said, “There is not a single righteous man who hasn’t sinned while doing good.” However to stumble, to realize it, correct it, and do the right thing is an accumulation of deep sensations, awareness, and a tool with which you reveal the Creator in all of his greatness from the beginning of the thought of creation to its implementation.

Question: What is meant by “…to afflict you to test you…?”

Answer: To afflict my “I” means to rise above egoism. To test is a state called faith above reason.

Question: Is it when you are given tidbits, and you can be seduced by them?

Answer: It is not only that. A person is given a state in which he doesn’t know which way to go, and here he can choose faith above reason.

If it is clear that it is against egoism, then there is no problem. You know that you either have or don’t have the strength for this. You must hate it or love it; the circumstances are absolutely clear.

When they are not clear, this is to test you. Here, a person is in limbo, and this is the hardest. You don’t understand which way to go. It is not like you have or don’t have the strength, or you really want to get away from what you are given. No, your state is so vague that it is as if you are between heaven and earth.

Such states are the worst because they extend time and kill the life of a person. It is called, “Fear an indifferent person.”

For or against are good states. Make mistakes or don’t, just keep going. But when a person is neither here nor there, and he is in a neutral state, it takes his entire life.

Question: How do we lead him out of these states?

Answer: It is only with the help of the environment. A person by himself will never be able to exit them. Only the environment gives him a correct direction, shows the way he must act, and he begins to suffer, to be jealous and envious. This is what leads him away from the state of passivity.

Question: So, it is not necessary to pull him out physically?

Answer: No, pulling him out physically is the simplest thing to do. The masterstroke is when, through a small hint from somewhere far away he feels that something great is happening there.

Question: It is written, “And thou shalt remember all the way… to know what was in thy heart, whether thou would keep His commandments, or no.” What does it mean to know what was in thy heart?

Answer: A person should scan himself at each segment of the path, all ten internal Sefirot in all desires. All of them are measured with respect to Malchut, the egoistic desire, and with respect to Keter, the altruistic intention. In this way, he should check himself at any given moment.

This is what is meant by to know what was in thy heart. Does it fully agree with the Creator on the level where it is revealed to you, where you yourself know who you are, and you constantly move between Malchut and Keter like a toy yo-yo?

The Road To The Garden Of Eden

laitman_747_01Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:7 – 8:8, 8:10: For the Lord your God is bringing you to a good and, a land with brooks of water, fountains and depths, that emerge in valleys and mountains, a land of wheat and barley, vines and figs and pomegranates, a land of oil producing olives and honey.

And you will eat and be sated, and you shall bless the Lord, your God, for the good land He has given you.

Question: The Torah gives us a goal and says you won’t regret if you reach it.

Answer: It all depends on whether you will get there. But if you make it, you enter such corrected desires that really are filled with the Upper Light, and each of them gives you wine, olives, sun, and honey. In short, this is paradise.

After all, everything already has been corrected by you in the previous actions. Egypt turns into a desert because now you reject those Egyptian egoistic desires in which you had everything. You don’t want to receive anything for yourself in them. You agree to the desert, the manna that you eat just in order to support yourself a little, and the water that you drink.

Then, you prepare yourself to enter a new degree, the quality of bestowal and love outside of yourself.

It means that the same huge desires that were revealed in your spiritual internal state called Egypt gradually move to the state of the desert, and you rise above them since this is the way that they should be. Then, you build from these desires the quality of bestowal and love. There, when you rise above yourself in bestowal to others, you enjoy the fact that you fill everyone with this goodness.

620 Desires

laitman_549_02Question: Can I get a list of all the 620 desires?

Answer: I do not know how to list them because a person who has not attained spirituality will not understand anything.

For example I can say, “Netzah which is in Hod or in Tifferet, and from it the third part from Bina,” etc. What will you be able to understand from this? How do these desires form a certain pleasure within you?

We cannot define this with our material terms. For example, there are about 800 kinds of fear and depression in Psychology. They are not given names, but only have notations of the homeopathic remedies that can neutralize them.

The same happens here. A person who is able to sense spiritual desires can express them only through the language of Sefirot. At the same time only those who already exist within Sefirot are able to perceive them.

Unity, The Way To A Good FutureQuestion: It is said that “The Lord, your God, brings you to the land… to give you great and good cities that you did not build, and houses full of all good things that you did not fill…” and so on. Why is it emphasized here that you didn’t do it?

Answer: We do nothing by ourselves, but to make sure we don’t have any abilities for this, we must ask the Creator. He will give us strength that will help us enter the complete perfect altruistic system.

Therefore it is said, “Beware, lest you forget the Lord, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt…” The Creator leads us forward to the land of Israel, to the reclamation of egoism. And egoism suddenly shows us that it is not egoism at all, it just appeared so relative to our corrupted qualities. And now we see that this is the most perfect system, the world of eternity, and we are in it.

In other words, we correct our own qualities just in order to see the perfection that has always existed. Even now we all together are in the world of infinity, heaven, perfection, and eternity! But all sorts of our ugly qualities allow us to see just a small fragment of the universe that is full of terrible suffering and death. And in fact we all are in the Absolute!

There Is Nothing Better Than What Is Destined For Us

Laitman_715Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:5 – 8:8, 8:10: You shall know in your heart, that just as a man chastises his son, so does the Lord, your God, chastise you. And you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to go in His ways, and to fear Him. For the Lord your God is bringing you to a good land, a land with brooks of water, fountains and depths, that emerge in valleys and mountains, a land of wheat and barley, vines and figs and pomegranates, a land of oil producing olives and honey, …

And you will eat and be sated, and you shall bless the Lord, your God, for the good land He has given you.

This is definitely a stunning picture. I would have thought that this is a description of the Mediterranean coast of France or the Greek Islands. However, it is very hard to say this about the land of Israel. Of course, here, we have in mind something completely different. It is impossible to find the words to describe the spiritual, not the geographical, land of Israel because these are the qualities of a person who is in his highest fulfillment.

It isn’t just a beautiful literary description of some picture, but an absolutely clear, rhymed, hard scientific and technical description of the qualities of a person who functions, or I would say gushes, this way.

Here all ten Sefirot of the person’s soul are described that are directed constantly toward bestowal and love of others, and, at the same time, are filled with the state of eternity because everything is directed not toward the person, but from him outward.

Question: Is this the feeling of a particular person?

Answer: Whatever happens in the desire is a feeling, and there is nothing else apart from desire.

Question: Will we come to this feeling in any case?

Answer: It is commanded to the entire world, written down, prescribed, and is waiting. We must try to achieve it through our efforts and as soon as possible. There is nothing worse than this state we are in now, and there is nothing better than what is destined for us.

Question: However, now, the Creator seemingly is helping us. He is showing us what this world is like, and it wasn’t like that before.

Answer: It wasn’t like that before because we hadn’t developed to this yet, not because He wasn’t showing this. We develop in a consistent evolutionary way to the point where we see what is happening with our egoism. We feel the crisis and develop further.

Of course, there are still many problems ahead. If we understand what is destined for us and try to apply our efforts, intentions, and aspirations to it, and help each other, then we will be able to pass the last part of the way that actually is the hardest because there is freewill here.

We ourselves must pass it through our free choice, and if we don’t do that, we will stand still like a donkey and get hit until we get smarter and understand that we need to go by our freewill. Let’s hope that we will wake up and move forward.

Freedom Of Choice On The Way To Spiritual Ascent

laitman_750_03The chapter “Eikev” (Following) tells how to enter the land of Israel and what will happen if the laws of the Torah that were given to the people by the Creator are observed.

After all, the system is uniform: One, you obey its laws and therefore receive through it upper correcting Light, abundance, fulfillment, and revelation, or if you incorrectly awaken it on yourself, it generates in you darkness, all sorts of negative feelings that nevertheless lead you to the same place through an alternative way of development. But in this case you make a circle, and this circle is very unpleasant.

Question: Is this a long time of preparation?

Answer: Yes. But in every point of the spiritual path from egoism, called “Egypt” to the complete system of bestowal and love, called “the land of Israel,” there is an opportunity to move straight or to make a circle and return to the starting point basically just in order to realize that you were going incorrectly, that you were driven by egoism and not a desire for the spiritual ascent, and eventually to make this ascent.

Comment: Anyway, “there is no one else besides Him.” On the one hand, you do this circle; on the other hand, you are not the one who decides this…

Answer: No, freewill is given to us from above. The entire creation would be lost otherwise. Without freewill we would have become little insects that are fully controlled from above and there would be no purpose and no meaning in the creation, in the creatures, in man, and in the Creator Himself, because the Creator is revealed only in relation to the creatures.

The entire path we go through is designed to assemble our efforts of freewill into one single unit, and when we approach the final result, each one with his own effort, with the fact that we analyze, choose, sort, and test, we create from ourselves a system called “man.”

Otherwise, if absolutely everything is fixated on the Creator and there is no freewill whatsoever, there is no point in the creation.

The fact that we will come to the final state doesn’t deny our constant freedom of choice.

“And Come And Possess The Land…”

laitman_749_02Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:01: Every commandment that I command you this day you shall keep to do, that you may live and multiply, and come and possess the land that the Lord swore to your forefathers.

“That you may live” means the correct development of the land of Israel and the continued existence in it. Land – Eretz is from the word “Ratzon,” which means desire.

That is, to the extent you use your desires correctly, you have an opportunity to exist in them, and through this you obtain a volume that gradually becomes your spiritual world.

After all, apart from the point in the heart you have nothing. The more you can extend it by correcting your desires to bestowal, the more of it you build to a sphere. It is called your soul and you exist in it.

In principle, the spiritual world doesn’t exist. You create it from those desires and intentions that you have now, and from our world, you build the spiritual one.

What is the difference between the two worlds? It is the presence of the upper force that is the quality of bestowal and love.

Question: After all, the intention is also given from above. What efforts should a person make in order to have a correct intention?

Answer:  Just to ask. Usually a person begins to ask when he is under pressure. And we talk about how we can get closer to the request, the so-called prayer, when it has not yet been formed in us, and how to accelerate our ripening so that we would really start asking. This is a problem.

To do this we need to come together, try to perceive all sorts of thoughts and desires of the friends, and influence each other with the combined efforts, which is to accelerate our approach to the new desire. And once it is formed in us, it will receive an answer from above.

From above means from the next degree that already exists, but precisely by forming correct intentions, correct actions, and correct desires we connect to it and reveal the higher states to the highest one. This means “to possess the land,” meaning to climb the steps of the spiritual ladder.

Gradual Correction

laitman_549_01Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 7:22: And the Lord, your God, will drive out those nations from before you, little by little. You will not be able to destroy them quickly, lest the beasts of the field outnumber you.

If you decide to correct those desires that you can’t control, you won’t be able to persuade them to turn from egoistic desires into altruistic ones. You won’t have the inner pressure to correct them. The pleasure that you have to give up is too great; it lurks behind them.

Or you will have to overcome very great difficulties and pressure in order to correct them to bestowal to others. Or, in seeing what fulfillment you pass to other people, you won’t feel that they are the same as you, even greater than you. A lot of different obstacles appear here, and therefore it is necessary to do everything gradually.

After all, if you won’t be able to correct desires on the human level, then you’ll have problems on the animal level with desires that are called beasts of the field. They will attack you and you won’t be able to deal with them.

Therefore we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. The Torah speaks about gradual correction where a person clearly ascertains in himself all his possibilities and abilities and understands what he does.

How often in life do we undertake some vows, but in a couple of days break them? We understand that we don’t have the strength to keep them.

When you are going to perform some corrections you should understand what you are refusing and how you will feel if others will get everything you refused. It means that this entire beautiful, perfect fulfillment that you were receiving in your egoism and enjoyed, you gave to others and now they enjoy and feel spiritual joy.

It turns out that you go into some kind of seclusion and they enjoy. At the same time they are at the same degree as you are.  Envy, jealousy, etc. may erupt. And all this is in order to finish the current degree of correction.

This actually is the part when envy tears you apart and turns into a new egoistic degree. Exactly here the correction starts. After all, you can return it and receive double the pleasure—what you took from them and from what you are filled with. So the beasts of the field arise in you.

The Hidden Wisdom – The Science Of Intentions

Laitman_083Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 7:26: Nor should you bring an abomination into your house, lest you are to be destroyed like it, but you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is to be destroyed.

“Bring into your house” means to bring it into your desires and into your heart. Beware that your mistakes and impure desires won’t become habitual to you. Try to stay above them and to control yourself all the time.

After all, what is the difference between a pure and impure person? Only the intentions are different. He kills, curses, hangs, destroys, burns, and rapes, he does everything that we can imagine as the most terrible acts, but does so only for the benefit of others.

It is unclear. But here we mean that all this is done inside a person over his desires. Naturally, such a person can’t harm others externally; he can’t kill, rob, or rape them.

However, it needs to be said that there are many actions that don’t harm others but with which we allegedly can’t agree. He performs them the same way from both pure and impure sides, but we can’t figure this out. Therefore, Kabbalah is called a hidden wisdom because it talks about things that are not visible to others, about a person’s intentions.

Comment: Let’s say there is an ordinary looking person in front of us, but inside him are wars, violence, and murders.

Answer: Yes, but not only that. Even outwardly he can be very abrupt. The problem is that his internal actions are hidden from others.

Question: For example, you told us that your teacher Rabash once said to you, “I was everything.” And for people around him he looked like an innocent person. Is this what he had in mind?

Answer: Yes. Kabbalists go through absolutely everything within themselves.

“You Shall Not Covet The Silver Or Gold, Lest You Be Ensnared By It”

laitman_527_01Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 7:25: The graven images of their gods you will burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or gold that is upon them and take it for yourself, lest you be ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord, your God.

Silver represents the quality of bestowal, and gold represents to bestow in order to receive. Like in the pure vessels—that is, the vessels of bestowal—we have a small state, the Light of Hassadim, and a big state, the Light of Hochma, and in the impure desires (Kelim, vessels), there are the same states.

Question: What does it mean to be ensnared by coveting the silver and gold statues of gods?

Answer: As soon as you begin to work with the attributes of bestowal, you can get into states where you are welcomed, rewarded, and praised, and you will sell yourself for it. While feeling yourself allegedly in the quality of bestowal, you, in fact, are ensnared.

This also happens in our world. For example, as soon as a politician achieves some sort of a position, he immediately ceases to think about others and cares only about himself.

Before his appointment, he shouts that he stands for the welfare of women and children, for equality, for special benefits, laws, and so on. Having achieved a seat in parliament, he does the opposite, he votes against the things he fought for. After all, if this is realized, how will he advertise himself in the future? How will he win over his voters?

In other words, in the government, he must work against his promises so that he will have an opportunity to use them in the next election.
