Everything Depends On A Person’s Internal Development

laitman_562_01Torah, Deuteronomy 9:4 – 9:5: Do not say to yourself, when the Lord, your God, has repelled them from before you, saying, “Because of my righteousness, the Lord has brought me to possess this land,” and [that] because of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord drives them out from before you. Not because of your righteousness or because of the honesty of your heart, do you come to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and in order to establish the matter that the Lord swore to your forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Question: “Not because of my righteousness” does the Creator bring me to this land, “but because of the wickedness of these nations, …” He “drives them out.” Does it mean this isn’t my achievement?

Answer: Of course. A person has no strength to act directly against himself, against his egoism. He can only try, and to the extent that he tries and suffers, he appeals to the Creator, and the Creator frees him from egoistic desires. Therefore it happens in such a roundabout alternative route.

Comment: And then again and again “Not because of your righteousness’ is repeated…

Answer: No, it just seems to us that the same thing is repeated. We are talking about new levels! Every time we advance, all these steps and all these circumstances seem completely different to us.

For example, I can look at some picture, and when I am in one state it causes me to feel one way, in another state I feel differently. In a year or two I have changed, so it causes me to feel a third way and so on. Therefore, although allegedly the same circumstance is described here, the fact is that I constantly change. Everything depends on a person’s internal development.

Purification By Fire

laitman_527_07Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 9:3: You shall know this day, that it is the Lord your God Who passes over before you as a consuming fire He will destroy them, and He will subdue them before you; and you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord spoke to you.

The upper force can be perceived either as a very soft love in accordance with the qualities of bestowal and love that a person obtained, or to the contrary, as a very hard, all-burning fire if there isn’t love and bestowal to others within a person.

“…and you shall drive them out and destroy them…”

“Them” refers to my personal qualities. I must eradicate them within myself and feel how I correct them every time, to burn them out of myself! Let them burn. Let them be destroyed so that I will be left only with the pure qualities that the fire burns and illuminates.

“Who Can Stand Against The Children Of ‘Anak?”

laitman_293Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 9:1 – 9:2: Hear, O Israel: Today, you are crossing the Jordan to come in to possess nations greater and stronger than you, great cities, fortified up to the heavens. A great and tall people, the children of the ‘Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard said, “Who can stand against the children of ‘Anak?!”

When a person advances in his Kabbalah studies and tries to get closer to his friends on the spiritual path in order to reach unity where the Creator will be revealed, he sees huge external and internal obstacles in front of him.

Internal obstacles appear between the participants who try to get closer to each other because such an egoism erupts between them that, as The Book of Zohar tells us, they literally want to kill and burn each other.

On the other hand, they are subjected to adverse external influences because everyone who doesn’t participate in the movement to establish a common heart are their adversaries.

These are the nations of the world, people of Israel that aren’t connected to their movement yet, and the so-called mixed multitude (Erev Rav – workers of Pharaoh). It means all of the adversaries of Kabbalah, all adversaries of the method of connecting people into one whole, are currently enemies of the spiritual path.

We see this for ourselves and cannot do anything. This is a natural product of our advancement. After all, it is written, “Who can stand against the children of ‘Anak?”

Our adversaries seem to us very strong, wise, sure of themselves, and logical. They understand what they are living for and are convincing because there is an egoistic world in front of them where they exist and navigate perfectly.

From their point of view, you are an unreal person full of unrealistic fantasies and just lead people away from a normal life. It is exactly like Pharaoh who said to Moses, “Why do you and Aaron distract people from my work? Let them work for me, I will pay them, and everything will be fine.”

Pharaoh commanded his servants, “Give them more work so that they won’t listen to these two. What is it that they suddenly decided to deal with some kind of love?!”

Today, the same thing happens. The ideological Kabbalah haters, the mixed multitude (Erev Rav), are trying to succeed especially in this. In all times, there is a war waged with them.

Question: But the people of Israel are entering the land of Israel and beginning to develop it.

Answer: The people of Israel gradually are joining the handful of Kabbalists under the leadership of Moses and Aaron, which includes their disciples and the ancestors of the tribes. In this way, they gradually lead people to a state of connection between them that is called the land of Israel.

Question: Then, do the children of ‘Anak cease to be giants?

Answer: Actually, there are no more giants in the land of Israel. They appear there only when another shattering happens.

For example, before the destruction of the First and the Second Temples egoistic societies appeared that stated that they knew how to serve the Creator, destroying through this the level of bestowal and love that was achieved between people. It was they who brought the Romans and Greeks to Israel that banished its people from it. Since then, we have existed in this state for 2,000 years.

Even now, they don’t let us to assemble together to reach integrity, bestowal, love, and unity between us. They feel that it undermines the foundation of their power over the people, and therefore, they are strongly against the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Question: How do we not see giants in them, that is, knowledgeable and logical people?

Answer: It is said very simply, “Turn your gaze to them, and they will turn into a mountain of bones.” We need to unite between us, attract the force of the Creator to us, and direct our energy to the connection of the people.

By this, we will destroy the giants because they exist only in order to shatter people to pieces, small currents, to not let them assemble and make them work only in egoism.

Therefore, even though they sometimes talk about the principle of “Love your neighbor as yourself,” they haven’t realized it themselves.

Do Not Follow Other Gods

Laitman_514_04Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:17, 8:19: and you will say to yourself, “My strength and the might of my hand that has accumulated this wealth for me.” …

And it will be, if you forget the Lord your God and follow other gods, and worship them, and prostrate yourself before them, I bear witness against you this day, that you will surely perish.

“…you will say to yourself, ‘My strength and the might of my hand’” means that you already are going to other gods.

“…you will surely perish” means that you will start again from scratch. That’s what a death is. There will be a destruction, and although not completely wasted, all of your previous efforts will not be able to be used in your movement forward.

The Creator And The Creation: A Hand And A Glove

Laitman_025_02Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:17 – 8:18: And you will say to yourself, “My strength and the might of my hand that has accumulated this wealth for me.” But you must remember the Lord your God, for it is He that gives you strength to make wealth, in order to establish His covenant which He swore to your forefathers, as it is this day.

There is nothing in our world that is done by a person!

Everything is performed by the force of the Upper Light, the upper energy, and we are just little egoists. What the Creator does within us, so it happens. The difference is only whether a person wants to identify with the actions of the Creator so that the Creator would perform them over him and would carry corrections in the world through him, or he doesn’t want this and distracts himself with various unrelated affairs. That is the problem.

Allegorically, it can be compared to a hand and a glove. The glove is us, and the hand is the Creator. However, the glove should come into full contact with the hand. A desire that is opposite to the hand is burning in this glove, but we must transform it into the same desire that is in the hand, and it must be done for each revelation of egoistic desire in the glove.

Question: It is said here, “And you will say to yourself.” However, what can I say to myself other than this is me and this is mine? After all, my heart is my egoistic desires. I am an egoist.

Answer: Yes, but it is necessary to correct these desires. We must become like the Creator. It is incorporated in the initial decision of the Creator to create the creation and to bring it to equivalence with Him. We can’t get away from that. We must become like Him

Either we move to this consciously through our actions and efforts, or the moment that we abandon our actions and efforts, the same force is turned on, but with the opposite effect, and we are getting compressed and pushed toward the need to return back to correct action.

So our life consists of prodding or encouragements from above, but so far, unfortunately, it is mostly prodding. All of our history, or at least the period of the last 2,000 years of exile, is just a succession of prodding, blows, and serious problems.

“Your Heart Grows Haughty And You Forget The Lord, Your God”

laitman_571_02Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:12 – 8:14: Lest you eat and be sated, and build good houses and dwell therein, and your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold increase, and all that you have increases, and your heart grows haughty, and you forget the Lord, your God, Who has brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage…

Constant revelation of new egoistic depths in human nature and their correction to altruistic qualities happens on the path when egoism is transformed to the quality of bestowal and love for all, from a complete minus to a complete plus. “Your heart grows haughty” means that very serious egoistic desires will arise in you. They are called seven nations that live in the land of Israel. It is necessary to conquer them and expel them from there.

In other words, I must correct all my egoistic desires that are still left in me, kill them, and expel them from myself. Then my desires will become clean and correct and I, with their help, will be able to connect with others, with my people. This is when in our joint sense of mutuality, love, and connection that the upper force, called the Creator, is revealed.

But a person’s desire constantly grows, descending lower and lower, and although I seemingly have everything, there suddenly appears an additional desire that says, “Could I enjoy this for myself?”

And instead, all my perception should be directed only to the fact that I please the Creator. Therefore it is written, “and you forget the Lord, your God,” meaning that you will cease to please Him.

One Nation In The Land Of Israel

Laitman_931-01The Torah tells us how people who keep spiritual laws rise to the level of connection between them that is called the “land of Israel” (Eretz Israel). “Eretz” is from the word “Ratzon” (desire), “Israel”—“Yashar Kel” (straight to the Creator, to the upper force, love, and bestowal). They enter this state and live in it. However, they won’t be able to enter the land of Israel if they don’t keep the spiritual laws.

Therefore they send spies forward who check what these laws are, what this land is. and what fruits it has. This means they clarify what conditions we need to accept upon ourselves and what kind of special fruits the Creator promises us if these conditions are met, and what will happen to us if we don’t enter this land.

A person must reveal all this before he rises to the spiritual degree. He has to understand that by doing so he acquires freedom from his egoism, but he has to pay for it with his huge efforts to unite the so-called troops—the nation of Israel.

However, in the desert it isn’t a nation yet, but just a tribe that must gather and become one united nation in order to enter the land of Israel, which is the state of full equivalence with the Creator,09 in mutual bestowal and love between all members of society.

“Your Clothing Did Not Wear Out Upon You”

laitman_741_02Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:4: Your clothing did not wear out upon you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.

Of course, here, we don’t mean the physiological health problems of people wandering in the desert. We are talking only about the desires of a person that he corrects on these levels.

Clothing is a screen that only a man can create and use. The lower desires don’t feel shame or need covering. Their coating is limited to fur, and a person must have a special cover that he himself creates.

The normal cover is made from animal skin. The skins are considered clothing, and in addition, tents can be constructed from them, for example, such as Bedouins erect for themselves. It means that this is the natural clothing and the natural home for a person.

There are clothes of a higher rank. It is wool of animal origin. Only this is considered real clothing, unlike all other materials.

Question: What is meant by “your clothing did not wear out upon you?”

Answer: It means that you constantly were adding screens on the desires that appear in you. Clothing is a screen for the body, for the desires.

“Nor did your foot swell” means that you definitely were mastering such desires that worked together with your head.

The foot symbolizes the end of the spiritual Partzuf, NHY (Netzah, Hod, Yesod). It is the biggest problem in the spiritual body because there are the biggest, deepest, lowest, and most material desires in it.

They are fulfilled only after they rise and become included in the body. When a person doesn’t stand but sits with his legs bent under him, then he receives fulfillment, or even when he lies and his head, body, and feet are on the same spiritual level.

In other words, “nor did your foot swell” means that all parts of a person worked in harmony, in unison.

Man Does Not Live By Bread Alone

laitman_276_01Question: What does it mean “manna, which you did not know, nor did your forefathers know”? (Torah, “Deuteronomy”, 8:3)

Answer: The forefathers didn’t have big egoistic desires. They didn’t pass through the state of the desert.
The forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are Keter, Hochma, and Bina. They had small, light desires and therefore they are called the holy fathers, since the quality of Bina (bestowal) was natural for those desires that were revealed at the time.

Therefore, we divide the entire history into fathers and sons. Fathers are HBD (Hochma, Bina, and Daat or Keter, Hochma, and Bina), meaning the head part of the Partzuf (spiritual body). Sons are HGT (Hesed, Gevura, and Tifferet). And the lowest part of the Partzuf, NHY, is us, meaning sons of the sons.

Comment: But the fathers still had pain, after all, Abraham asked, “And how will I conquer this land?”

Answer: Naturally, he was asking in advance because the head part feels and creates a foundation for the entire future correction until the final correction.

Question: How can we explain the phrase, “Man does not live by bread alone, but rather by, whatever comes forth from the mouth of the Lord does man live.”

Answer: There are qualities that are called pure Bina, the light of Hassadim, the light of bestowal, and this is bread. And there are qualities when inside the light of Hassadim that spreads the light of Hochma. And this is called complete bestowal, reception in order to bestow. Thus you use your egoistic Kelim (vessels) also for bestowal.

For this even bigger light is required from above that will illuminate and correct your egoistic desires to altruistic ones, which is above Bina, on the level of Hochma. Then you use that energy, that light, that comes directly from the Creator.

And it is said about this, “by whatever comes forth from the mouth of the Lord does man live.” This is double correction in two stages.

But there are all sorts of variations in the quality of Bina that represents bread.

For example, we don’t eat bread on Passover. Since the regular bread during mixing is in conjunction with water for more than eighteen minutes (meaning nine Sefirot of the direct light and nine Sefirot of the reflected light), it is considered to be in connection with Malchut and therefore we can’t use it because the connection with Malchut won’t allow us to exit Egypt.

Thus, the exodus from Egypt, meaning separation from Malchut, is symbolized by the unleavened bread called Matzah. This is one of the varieties of the quality of bestowal.

And after Passover begins the holiday of receiving the Torah, Shavuot, which is when we eat everything dairy because milk is a quality of bestowal. And it symbolizes the celebration of giving of the Torah.

All these actions are calculated in the head part of the Partzuf or soul. And after that comes the quality of sons, all those qualities that people of Israel passed under the leadership of Moses. We are at the end of development and are considered sons of the sons.

Transition To The Upper World

laitman_569_01Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 8:03: And He afflicted you and let you go hungry, and then fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your forefathers know, so that He would make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but rather by, whatever comes forth from the mouth of the Lord does man live.

All the challenges are intended so that a person will fill his egoistic desires with altruistic intention, the quality of Bina (bestowal) when he doesn’t want anything for himself.

He only wants to fulfill others and that this fulfillment would be equivalent to the pleasure that he received once from his own fulfillment.

Manna is the fulfillment where a person stays empty in his egoistic desires and is fulfilled only in the altruistic intentions. In principle; manna is an illusionary fulfillment.

It’s like a mother who hasn’t had breakfast yet sits and watches as her little child eats, and it fulfills her. She calms down as she watches all her systems being filled with pleasure from the fact that her child eats the porridge she cooked.

Fulfillment takes place not in those desires that you used to enjoy, but in the desires of another person, let’s say a child, since you love him and so you identify yourself with him, so you enjoy to the extent that he is fulfilled.

The same is also with others. If you treat them with the same love, then by fulfilling them you will enjoy yourself. And what about your qualities and desires? They will remain empty all the time.

They will be changing into the quality of bestowal to others, meaning they will gradually be joining the intention to bestow. And then your previous desire with an egoistic intention will never be fulfilled since you will be able to exist only outside of yourself. This is the transition to the upper world.
