“And I Cast Its Dust Into The Brook That Descends From The Mountain”

laitman_740_03Question: What does it mean, “And I cast its (golden calf’s) dust into the brook that descends from the mountain”?

Answer: “The brook that descends from the mountain” is a quality of Bina that comes down from Mount Sinai. Egoism (the dust of the golden calf) must be mixed with the quality of bestowal in order to produce a connection of Bina and Malchut to reach the second restriction (Tzimtzum Bet) that is a special symbiosis of qualities of reception and bestowal when they get combined and become ready for gradual and consistent correction during the so-called forty years.

The people, representing the quality of Malchut, stand at the very foot of the mountain, they don’t even have a drop of spiritual qualities, no strength to climb the mountain.

This brook that is flowing down (Bina) begins to mix with Malchut. This is great mercy of the Creator when He gives His force in order to mix with the egoism of a person and to begin raising him. And a person is required only to close his mouth, heart, and eyes and to want just one thing: to be included in this brook by at least one point.

Before And After Entering The Land Of Israel

laitman_749_02Question: Why does Moses repeat the laws of the Torah to the people again and again?

Answer: It is in order for them to understand the entire path they travelled before entering the land of Israel and to prepare for entry into the promised land.

After all, from the border of the land of Israel onward, they must work with the same egoism, the same golden calf, with the second restriction that took place in a mixture of gold (Malchut) with a stream of water (Bina). Now, it is like they must dig it all.

Moses seems to tell his people, “During the forty years of wandering in the desert, besides the quality of Malchut that you had in Egypt, you acquired the quality of Bina. Now, are you beginning not just to interact with them, but to work in order to bestow. When you cultivate and plough the earth, you get the fruits of the earth.” In other words, this is now the land of Israel.

Question: Is it possible to say that the way of Torah is a passive way?

Answer: If we don’t understand what actions we need to perform on ourselves, then this is a passive way since there is none else besides Him and the Creator does everything. I have nothing to do other than to agree with what He does within me and try always to move in unison with Him. However, when I need to move in unison with Him, my work becomes very challenging, complex, and compound.

Agreement is the starting point. I agree with the fact that only the Creator exists and He is good that does good, and after He does only good, I need to correct myself, to expose myself under His influence so that my qualities really would become the same as His, so that I would feel inside them His personal and only good action.

This occurs both before and after entering the land of Israel. The difference is only in the power with which it is done. Either it is done in the quality of bestowal before entering the land of Israel, or it is done in the quality of reception after entering. But this happens closer to the construction of the Temple.

The Dust Of The Golden Calf

laitman_527_12Torah, Deuteronomy 9:21: And I took your sin the calf, which you had made, and I burned it with fire, and I crushed it, grinding it well, until it was fine dust…

To grind into dust means that all egoistic desires that were in the golden calf lost their main form and became ready for correction and for mixing with the Torah, meaning with the Light that comes and corrects them.

Until now egoistic desires seemed as a deity in the form of some ornaments, idols, all that you want. But now they are taken out of egoism and turned into dust.

Therefore, the destruction of the golden calf and all that is done in the Torah is done correctly. All this has to be and a person must go through it, otherwise he won’t have his own perception and realization of the Creator; he would not able to become like Him.

With What To Fill An Empty Desire?

laitman_592_01Torah, Deuteronomy 9:20 – 9:21: And with Aaron, the Lord was very furious, to destroy him; so I prayed also for Aaron at that time. And I took your sin the calf, which you had made, and I burned it with fire, and I crushed it, grinding it well, until it was fine dust, and I cast its dust into the brook that descends from the mountain.

When Moses climbed Mount Sinai, his faithful assistant Aaron had to descend to the valley because people were complaining and shouting, “Where is this Moses? Make him come down to us and give us something to pray to. Or give us back the Egyptian idol,” meaning gold, fulfillment of our egoism.

We can’t live in an empty egoism, it demands fulfillment. Enormous empty desires arise in us, and we want to fulfill them. But with what? How? With either altruistic or egoistic pursuits, but it is necessary for our egoism, it can’t live without this and it screams about this. Since egoism, embodied in the golden calf can somehow fill the people, Aaron agrees to it.

Of course, the Creator does all this. After all, there is none else besides Him. But why does He do this? He does it, so that people, while outside of Egypt, would dive into the same huge Egyptian desires and revive egoism in themselves for subsequent correction.

Obviously, nothing happens without the will of the Creator. We can only accelerate the time of our ripening. But such falls as results of destruction of the First and the Second Temple and the exile were registered in Kabbalah in advance, and Kabbalists knew about them.

It is impossible to reach full correction and adhesion with the Creator without going through these states.

The Shattering Of The Tablets

laitman_740_03Torah, Deuteronomy 9:15 – 9:17: So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were on my two hands. And I saw, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord, your God; you had made yourselves a molten calf; you had deviated quickly from the way which the Lord had commanded you. So I grasped the two tablets, cast them out of my two hands, and shattered them before your eyes.

This happened to Moses during the revelation of egoism that people brought from Egypt, meaning from their previous state. In this state, the quality of bestowal that we receive in the tablets of the covenant isn’t manifested strongly enough to defeat the golden calf.

Here, it is necessary to rise by faith above reason. This is a special action that cannot be done the first time. As the sin of Adam can’t be corrected without the revelation of evil, so also without revelation of the golden calf, it is impossible to come to its correction. However, it must be revealed, that is, clearly displayed in front of everyone when everyone worships it.

Here, Moses is powerless. He shatters the tablets of the covenant. It means that there isn’t any possibility of correction in all of the egoistic calculations.

Torah, Deuteronomy 9:18 – 9:19: And I fell down before the Lord as before, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sins you had committed, by doing evil in the eyes of the Lord to anger Him. For I was frightened of the wrath and the fury that the Lord was angry…

The shattering of the tablets of the covenant happened on the ninth of Av. After the golden calf is melted into the holy vessels in which the Creator will be revealed between people, Moses climbs the mountain again to obtain other tablets and comes down.

And then, on the special holy day called Yom Kippur, the path of correction and revival begins.

Question: Does the phrase, “And I fell down,” represent the prayer of Moses?

Answer: Yes, a person must go through these states. He must reveal all of the insignificance of his nature and all of the greatness of the force of the Creator.

Roots And Branches

laitman_608_01There is a law of roots and branches.

Historically we came out of Egypt once, crossed the desert, came to the land of Israel, built the First Temple, then the Second Temple, and so on, and all of this has already happened.

But we are not talking about things that happened in history; after all, they had to happen this way. We are talking about the law when a spiritual root necessarily has to touch its earthy “response,” or earthy branch. Roots and branches must connect with each other, but only once!

It is enough for the root to touch the branch lightly, and it already performs the work in it, creates connection. Therefore, we don’t need to return to Egypt again to buy a plane ticket to meet our Pharaoh there that rules over us. It’s just no longer necessary.

It remains for us to do what we have to do, i.e., to correct ourselves. All this already exists in the root and now we need to implement it in the branches. Therefore, we are in the land of Israel, in egoism, and now we need to undergo all this ourselves, to go through and to correct it.

Question: What does it mean then that a person should feel as if he exits Egypt every day?

Answer: The exodus from Egypt is a rise above our egoism. There are 613 egoistic desires (Taryag) in the egoism that need to be corrected to altruistic ones, i.e., desire of hatred, competition, and hostility to connection and love. This is called observing the commandments of correcting desires.

And this must be done daily because every time a person rises to a new level, each of them has the same 613 desires but in a different, stronger form. Therefore, every day a person must imagine that he exited Egypt and has the right to correct these desires.

Between Humanity And The Creator

Unity, The Way To A Good FutureTorah, Deuteronomy 7:1: When the Lord, your God, brings you into the land to which you are coming to possess it, He will cast away many nations from before you: the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivvites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and powerful than you.

Our desire (spiritual structure) consists of seven parts: Hesed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, and Malchut. In the Torah, they are represented by seven nations—seven very strong egoistic desires.

And the desire to reach love and bestowal is very weak in a person. It is like a small Moses against the great Pharaoh. Egoism rules between us and we don’t have any strength to cope with it because we lack the qualities of bestowal, love, and connection.

We have no other option except to ask the Creator to help us conquer these nations. And He fights for us. Our strength is manifested only by the fact that we are connected with Him.

We are the link between all of humanity and the Creator. Therefore, we receive negative inclinations from both sides that are obliged to put us on the correct level of relations with both the Creator and all the nations of the world (our egoistic desires).

Our strength is that we can connect with the Creator, to enlist His support and thus overcome our egoism.

The Turning Point

laitman_742_03Torah, Deuteronomy 9:13 – 9:14: And the Lord spoke to me [further], saying, “I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people. Leave Me alone, and I will destroy them and obliterate their name from beneath the heavens, and I will make you into a nation mightier and more numerous than they.”

The people are in a state where their entire egoism has come out; however, it has not been transformed. Therefore, it seems to the people that there is nothing they can do. Let there be death, but they must not remain like this, and here comes another state.

Question: Here, the Creator tells Moses to distance himself, I will annihilate them, and you will beget a different nation.

Answer: This is how a person feels. There is nothing left within him except for the property of “Moses.” This is precisely the turning point.

Remember How You Were

laitman_278_03Torah, Deuteronomy 9:6 – 9:7: You shall know that, not because of your righteousness, the Lord, your God, gives you this land to possess it; for you are a stiff-necked people.

Remember do not forget, how you angered the Lord, your God, in the desert; from the day that you went out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebelling against the Lord.

Comment: At this stage it is seemingly said, “Remember how you were…”

Answer: In order to correct your egoistic qualities you must resurrect them in yourself, raise them again and start to correct them. Once you rejected them and passed over them, but that isn’t enough.

This is just a degree that is called “bestowal in order to bestow.” Now you must take your qualities and transform them inversely into opposite ones. So it seems that here the previous stages are remembered.

In Harmony With Global Nature

Laitman_715When a person enters the global system of nature and adjusts himself to it by observing all its laws on all levels, he comes to the balance and harmony with both material and spiritual nature, because they are one whole. It seems to us that they are different things because we don’t perceive them as a whole yet.

We don’t notice a lot of things in nature. After all, in the material world we see only a small fragment of it.

But if a person acts according to the laws of Kabbalah that explain how to tune in to the entire nature, called the Creator, he receives only positive feedback from it.

It is said so in the Torah in a simple language that everything will be good for you: your wife, children, home, peace, country, weather, sun, and moon, everything will shine and flourish. And during your life you will begin to move gradually from the perception of this world only to the perception of the spiritual world, that is eternal and perfect, as well.

You will move from one system of forces to another. You won’t feel when you die since you don’t die, but simply turn into a spiritual person. You gradually stop feeling your body and feel yourself living in the eternal, infinite, and perfect space.

This is the state we must reach. The wisdom of Kabbalah and the entire Torah urge us to do just that.
