From Father To Son

laitman_740_01Torah, Deuteronomy, 10:06 – 10:07: The children of Israel journeyed from the wells of B’nei Ya’akan to Moserah; there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son served as Kohen in his stead. From there, they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Yotvath, a land with streams of water.

Death in the spiritual world isn’t a punishment or something terrible. When the son comes to replace the father it means the rise, for example of Aaron, to the next level.

It means he dies in his last guise, in his past performance of some actions, because he can’t rise to the next level without leaving his previous form. Then he obtains a new form that is called his son. But in principle, all souls are immortal.

They don’t lose anything; they only gain all the time. In other words, it is about a desire that transforms under different names until it comes to its final corrected state.

Who Leads The Hand Of Man?

Laitman_509Torah, Deuteronomy 10:02: And I shall inscribe on the tablets the words that were upon the first tablets which you shattered and you shall place them into the ark.

What does it mean that Moses writes on the tablets? In fact, the Upper Light, i.e., the Creator does it, but a person’s hand executes it.

A person who is in complete agreement and complete adhesion with the Creator must perform such an action when he writes the Torah on his heart or gives this opportunity to the Creator. This can be interpreted in different ways.

However, even we assume that a person does it himself, the Creator leads his hand.

Circumcision Of Uncorrected Desires

Laitman_631_3Torah, Deuteronomy 10:16: You shall circumcise the foreskin of your heart, therefore, and be no more stiffnecked.

“You shall circumcise the foreskin of your heart” means that you need to trim the edge of your heart because you are entering a state called the land of Israel when one needs to open his heart to complete correction.

The meaning of circumcision is that the desires that are impossible to correct are removed from the heart. The correct Kli (vessel) or soul consists of ten Sefirot. At first, we can correct only a certain part of it, and the rest is as if removed; in other words, it is not used for a certain time.

This action is performed by the Upper Light that cuts off, like a knife, the uncorrected part, protecting it so that we won’t touch it. Thus, I am confident that I never will make a mistake and won’t start using those desires for which I have no power of correction.

The Light performs all actions without exception: both fulfillment and circumcision. In this case, it acts like a knife.

Do Not Disappoint The Creator And Creation

laitman_934Question: It is said in the Torah that the Creator demands that we fear Him. What does it mean to fear something I don’t feel? After all, there is nothing in this, other than a game.

Answer: We are not talking about an animal fear. I am not able to intimidate myself, and that is a wrong attitude toward the Creator, to the upper force, because He is absolute, perfect, fills everything, and is infinitely good.

The fact is, that I have to artificially create a system of relationships between my friends and me that will be called the upper world or the Creator. As a result, the system must pass the test of truth and be such that it coincides with the existing system, which was created by the Creator from the descent from the top down, and we create this system by rising from the bottom up.To the extent they match, the two systems are combined, and the upper system is placed in the lower, and is felt as one single entity.

The upper system is called the Upper Light that is included in us this way. And the lower system is a system of our corrected relationships that must conform to the Upper Light. That is, we must create such relationships between us, like in the Light, and despite the fact that our system consists of the lowest, coarse desires, we must make it similar to the Upper Light of the Creator. Then it will fill the lower system and both worlds will merge. This state is considered corrected.

Comment: It turns out that you walk in the dark from the bottom upward….

Answer: But you have “tablets” for this—instruction manuals. And most importantly, you have your egoism that stops and confuses you all the time. Thanks to it, you constantly turn to the Creator and receive some help from Him.

After all, on the one side (on the left) egoism pushes you away from the goal, on the other side, you need help from the right. This way, thanks to these two forces, when one is allegedly “against,” and another is “for” (although they both are “for”), you move forward. We just need to learn to use them correctly.

Question: Does it mean that the smallest degree of deviation from the correct angle takes us in a completely different direction from the meeting with the Creator?

Answer: No, the fact is that after reaching the first degree where we get included into each other, the minimal degree of deviation is corrected all the time and the correction takes place with higher accuracy.

Question: What is the fear in the movement from the bottom upward?

Answer: This is a fear not to guess the desire of the Creator and to do something that will disappoint people and Him. This is the state that all of us should have.

Question: So how can we disappoint people?

Answer: The fact that in this case they would feel themselves imperfect and would have the feeling of mutual shame that literally “burns” them. Therefore, we must try to make the relationships between us similar to the attitude of the Creator toward us.

Decision Point

laitman_236_02Torah, Deuteronomy 9:28 – 9:29: Lest [the people of] the land from which you brought us out will say, “Because of the Lord’s inability to bring them to the land about which He spoke to them, and because of His hatred toward them, He has brought them out to slay them in the desert.” But they are Your people and Your inheritance, which You brought out with Your great strength and with Your outstretched arm.

Question: What is this appeal to the Creator?

Answer: This is a state when a person has the ability to soften the Creator’s attitude toward him and thus to overcome some of the obstacles smoothly, but he doesn’t agree to this.

He wants to overcome them in their truest form so his own egoism won’t come back to him and start arguing that it is possible to cheat a little and it is not necessary to do everything meticulously to the highest level.

These things are found at every step. But a person knows what to do. After all, when he receives an opportunity to work this way he has no doubts. It’s just that for him there always appears a point of making the hardest decisions.

Write The Torah On Your Heart

laitman_547_02Torah, Deuteronomy 10:01: At that time, the Lord said to me, “Hew for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones and come up to Me onto the mountain, and make for yourself a wooden ark.

A person’s egoistic heart that must be corrected is called a stony heart. Therefore, the entire Torah, the essence of which is in ten sayings, in ten main commandments, must be carved onto the heart.

It is necessary to carve out of the heart, i.e., of our desires, the only place (nothing else should remain of it) to write on it the ten commandments that we must perform each day and night to reach their full implementation during our entire life, at the same time, rising to the mountain.

The mountain is called Mount Sinai, the mountain of hatred. Rising to the Creator and descending from Him, a person suddenly discovers that all the people (his desires) are engaged in debauchery, confusion, and desire to fully delight themselves with food, sex, knowledge, fame, power, and everything that their stony evil heart can imagine. However, nevertheless, he must bear these tablets.

Therefore, Moses carved them and made an additional special packaging for them in order to guard his corrected desires that were once carved on the tablets; they assumed the form of letters. Allegorically, it is said that when he was carrying the tablets, these letters were shining.

But everything Moses achieved, he did for himself, and this is not enough. So when he came down, he discovered that the people had become corrupted and his tablets were worthless! Therefore he destroyed them.

This shattering mixed all of his upper thoughts and ideas with the lower ones. So when he climbed the mountain for the second time with the new tablets, they were much more valuable than the previous ones, not due to their height and detachment from everything material, but because they included themselves in all the sinister earthly desires of the people connected with the desire to go back to the golden calf, to Egypt, “Give us what we had in Egypt.” This is why the second tablets were much more valuable.

As a rule, a Kabbalist must pull himself up to the lowest level; there is no other way. Only from the shattering is it possible to go up! The same thing happened to Adam. The same thing happened to us: the construction of the First and Second Temples, their complete destruction, exit into the exile, and beginning of the current recovery. After all, today we are mixed with all of humanity and therefore our recovery will be universal, correct, and final. This is how it happens.

So Moses, in such a condition, breaking the tablets and ascending the mountain again shows this was planned in advance; it can’t be any other way!

And the instruction to carve himself two stony tablets means to prepare the heart to rise. It is said, “Write the Torah on your heart” (on your desires) because it is necessary to give the desires a certain shape. And this, actually, is a heart.

What Will Save Us From Pride?

laitman_622_01Comment: It is said that we have “to walk in all His ways and to love Him, and to worship the Lord, your God” (Deuteronomy 10:12), and to serve Him.

Answer: It is needless to serve Him if He is Absolute. We just need to serve people, creating for them the upper world. The Creator needs nothing. What can you give Him? He is perfect!

Question: Isn’t there egoism that still manifests itself one way or another in the fact that I serve people?

Answer: In the upper system everything is arranged so that if all my intentions are egoistic, then, first of all I can’t serve people spiritually, and secondly I will receive only a “slap” on the head from others.

And even if I behave correctly and do everything for them unselfishly, nevertheless they will still criticize me as much as they want and thereby will guard me from conceit and pride; I thank them very much for this! However, if they don’t criticize me, it is a problem. This is a punishment from the Creator.

Understanding A Kabbalist

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Deuteronomy, “Ekev,” 10:03 – 10:05: So I made an ark of acacia wood, and I hewed two stone tablets like the first ones, and I ascended the mountain, with the two tablets in my hand. And He inscribed on the tablets, like the first writing, the Ten Commandments, which the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain, from the midst of the fire, on the day of the assembly, and the Lord gave them to me.

And I turned and came down from the mountain, and placed the tablets in the ark which I had made, and there they were, as the Lord had commanded me.

This speaks about the same Ten Commandments, but on an entirely different level. It is like saying the same words to a child, an adolescent, and an adult, but all of them will understand differently and will accept and implement the words in different ways.

These commandments are intended for a different generation; therefore, they are different. This is exactly the way this process should happen, and this is how it happened with both Temples when Rabbi Akiva laughed about the destruction of the First Temple and said, “Now I trust that more is exactly what will occur.”

Question: But what was it like for people who saw the tragedy occurring to look at him? The leader of the generation laughing at the very moment when everyone else cried.

Answer: These are two levels of attainment. The problem is that people don’t understand Kabbalists. In order to understand them, a person has to rise to their level. There is no other way. After all, it is said, he who increases knowledge, increases pain. (Ecclesiastes 1:18). In fact, a Kabbalist is the one who worries more than the others, but on the other hand, he also rejoices.

Question: If a generation doesn’t understand the Kabbalist, what was Baal Sulam expecting when he wrote his articles?

Answer: The fact is that there must be some feedback from the generation, and there was none. A Kabbalist mainly works only when he receives a certain task from above.

Baal Sulam didn’t work for the last generation, although he wrote a little bit about it. He lived in a very difficult time, with the creation of the State of Israel, World War II, the Holocaust, and the death of the Jews. He worked specifically to accept and to shape people spiritually at the time he lived here in the land of Israel, and to lay the foundation for the last generation.

According To The Plan Of The Creator

Laitman_632_3Torah, Deuteronomy 9:25 – 9:27: So I fell down before the Lord the forty days and the forty nights that I had fallen down; because the Lord had said to destroy you. And I prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance, which You have redeemed in Your greatness, and which You have brought out of Egypt with mighty hand. Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; do not turn to the stubbornness of this people, to their wickedness, or to their sin.

Moses protects his people all the time, because he is a quality of Bina. He is the only one who has connection with the Creator. This is a quality that exists deep within us, and today we are trying to create it in the connection between the friends in the group. This quality will save us.

Question: At what moment do I fall down before the Creator?

Answer: When I agree with the fact that everything that is done, is done by Him for the better and I am ready to lower myself before all the actions that He thinks to carry out through me. I agree with absolutely everything. This is considered a very high degree.

If I don’t do it, I won’t be able to correct any of my 613 desires, i.e., I won’t be able to perform 613 commandments (Mitzvot). This is what is called “destroy my people.”

Question: And what does the exclamation “Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” mean?

Answer: The forefathers aren’t the slaves of Pharaoh, but the servants of the Creator. They laid the foundation of the three lines in our soul. Thus, thanks to their preparation within us, we can move on. They are constantly holding the connection between the people and the Creator.

Question: In other words, it is a request? It gives us an opportunity to walk along the middle line because we constantly deviate to the left.

Answer: This is the way it should be. A person should rejoice when something strong and serious falls on him. It means that now he rose to such a state where he can accept an additional burden and, of course, additional connection with the Creator.

Question: Usually such states come when we don’t expect them. However, can we ourselves cause them, feel ourselves reaching a dead end, and start working with them?

Answer: I personally don’t see states that a person can cause himself or even more than that, not to cause, but to provoke.

The Creator has His plan, His terms, and He works with them very precisely because everything consists of ten Sefirot, five Partzufim, 125 degrees, 613 desires on each degree and so on. It means that everything is calibrated and installed from the top down. And from the bottom up, we can only rise according to the same laws.

“You Have Been Rebelling…”

laitman_531_02-jpgTorah, Deuteronomy 9:24: You have been rebelling against the Lord since the day I became acquainted with you.

Question: What is the meaning of the phrase, “since the day I became acquainted with you?”

Answer: It is from the day Moses was called upon to lead his people.

It was still the gift from the Creator! Absolute egoism was breaking out from every point possible in the sons of Israel. So, it was necessary to settle, compare, and constantly make changes in their attitudes toward each other, so they agreed to come out of Egypt.

Moreover, they must be aware of the future state they are going to. This isn’t a physical exit from Egypt to Sinai, but an exit from their egoism, separation from it, rising above it.

This is how the rebelling was expressed. Egoism allowed itself complete freedom of action.
