Prophets, Joshua 20:1-20:3: And the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying,”Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘Prepare for you cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses. To which a slayer that kills any person unawares, unwittingly, shall flee and they shall be for you as a refuge from the avenger of blood.

One of the first laws when entering the land of Israel is the condition to build cities of refuge because the sons of Israel work against their egoism. In this work, contradictions will inevitably arise, wars with egoism, its demise.

Therefore, one must know how to work with desires that one cannot manage and correct them even if not from the first attempt, but from the second or third.

Question: Who decides that a murder happened unintentionally, inadvertently?

Answer: A person reveals all this on the background of working with himself and with society. Prophets, Book of Joshua, 15:63; 16:10: As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwelt with the children of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

And they did not drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt among the Ephraimites to this day, and they became servants under tribute.

To the extent that the people of Israel do not correct themselves, they will remain dominated by the desires and goals called other nations. It will be so until the final correction (Gmar Tikkun).

Eventually, at the end of days, there will be no other nations left except the people of Israel, that is, all those who strive for the Creator. Moreover, we are not talking about nationalities or any nationalistic properties. Everyone can stay in their traditions and culture. The only thing that is necessary is to strive for mutual connection between them. This is what Baal HaSulam wrote in “The Last Generation” and all his other articles.

Today we need to come to a state where we overcome these nations in us and guide them toward the intention to act and build everything for the sake of the Creator. Then there will be no need to expel anyone. We banish our intentions and everyone remains in this new world.

The Torah does not say that you need to kill, destroy, or bury. All wars that were fought were mostly spiritual wars. The spirit of the people had to win in connection with others despite the egoistic opposition of the enemy.

Now the world is in such contradiction and fragmentation so that all this would be very quickly realized. And although it is still puffed up and we still want to subdue, conquer, and capture, inside it already manifests a huge emptiness and a sense of futility of any conquests.

This means that we are approaching the land of Israel in order to realize that only the Creator, the one and only, is the upper guiding force for all who want only one thing: to be able to reveal Him in unity between us, and then all egoistic desires will become altruistic. This will be the conquest of the land of Israel.

And the entire congregation of the children of Israel assembled at Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there. (Prophets, Joshua, 18:1)

The meeting tent is a common screen that covers and unites all the children of Israel, i.e., all their desires, intentions, and strivings toward the Creator.

Before reaching such a state they get together and unite so much so that they can become “as one man with one heart,” so the Creator covers them with a common screen.

If someone leaves the tent, it means that he leaves the connection with the Creator and moves away from this society.

Prophets, Joshua, 8:34-8:35: And afterward Joshua read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the Torah.

Question: After the victory of Joshua over the city of Ai, an altar was being built to the God of Israel on Mount Ebal. One of the translations of the word “ebal” is evil. Why is the altar placed on evil?

Answer: And how else? Where is the temple placed? Also on evil. This is all done to rise above egoism. Therefore, everything that is under it is evil. Thanks to the construction, it is corrected.

Hebron, therefore, became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fulfilled the will of the Lord God of Israel.

And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba (the city of Arba); Arba was the greatest man among the ‘Anakim.’ And the land had rest from war.

Question: Hebron is probably the most turbulent place on Earth. What is in it? Historically, this is the first capital of King David, the second holiest city after Jerusalem. The cave of the Patriarchs where our forefathers are buried is there. But why is it such a turbulent place?

Answer: Because it is for this place that a symbolic war between Israel and the rest of the world is waged because everyone wants a connection with the Creator.

Connection with the Creator happens through the forefathers. Thus, Hebron is the point that connects every nation with Him. Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, are all serious bonds between the Creator and a man only if he would symbolically conquer Hebron.

However, he will conquer from the point of view of connection with Him, at least an external connection, because all those who misunderstand the connection with the Creator believe: “If we reign there, then this place will be ours.” They do not understand that only internal unity, which can be reached by rising above egoism, gives this connection.

Therefore, for as many years as Hebron has existed, and it existed even before the people of Israel entered there, there were wars over it. The Turks, the Crusaders, and the Arabs all wanted Jerusalem and Hebron.

Question: You have also been to Hebron. What do you feel about this place?

Answer: Absolute emptiness. It is possible to say that there is some kind of connection, but this feeling is very vague. The only feeling that I have and have always had awakens on the grave of Rabbi Shimon. I could see it even in Rabash. I could really feel there that he was physically close to the Creator. Everything in spirituality is initially built on the equivalence of two forces: the force of bestowal, love, fulfillment, and creation, which is called the Creator, and the opposite desire upon which this force works: the desire to receive, accumulate, and absorb everything inside.

The influence of the force of the Creator generates all states that the creation goes through until it reaches its full similarity to the Creator. In this metamorphosis, the creation constantly feels it is under the influence of the upper light. It is forced to go through these states: the best, the worst, and all kinds of descents and ascents in order to imprint within itself various impressions of the influence of the light.

As a result, these impressions evoke various forms of desire. The desire itself, created by the Creator, is like formless clay from which all sorts of forms, states, and impressions must be created: close-far, low-high, wide-narrow, light-dark, red-green, musical sounds, etc. That is, all categories that distinguish a place, time, space, and movement.

Therefore, the light acts on this amorphous desire, this piece of clay, this shapeless piece of earth, dust, and makes something similar to the Creator out of it.

Imagine to what level you need to elevate this creation! And it must be aware of its ascent, be impressed by it so that it achieves independence in the likeness to the Creator.

The Creator is working on this initial desire, which is not even an embryo and has not yet been born. This is what we study in the science of Kabbalah and what we practically go through ourselves.

Why is it said: “husbands and wives”? What does this mean?

Answer: We are talking about two lines. There are cities where you can destroy only the male population, and leave the female population, or destroy women and leave only virgins, and so on.

And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.
Hebron, therefore, became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fulfilled the will of the Lord God of Israel.

Caleb asks to give him land for a plot, which is not so easy to win. Moreover he does not ask for fertile land, but for work for himself: “I am 85 years old, but I am still strong and I can still be useful.”

Caleb is not afraid of anything and he knows that he can overcome these desires because he has a connection with the Creator and with the people and with a goal that he must reveal to everyone.

He says: “I want to fight,” because the confrontation between positive and negative forces reveals and the Creator who created these opposing forces is attained through this.
