The Duty Of The Levites

933Prophets, Joshua 21:39: All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel, were forty-eight cities with the open land around them.

Question: To belong to Levites, is it a privilege or a responsibility?

Answer: It is both privilege and responsibility because these two concepts are inextricably connected. Levites work among the people, in society, among the masses. They educate people by being a conduit between the Cohens and the masses.

The Cohens are the carriers of the upper knowledge, which is not connected to the people. Let’s say they are like academics. However, besides the academy, there are also institutes, technical schools, and various institutions where people are educated. These are for the Levites, the teachers of the masses.

The Cohens and Levites within us are desires that tell us how we should behave in everyday life in order to become similar to the Creator in general.

It is a big responsibility to be a Levite. Not everyone is worthy of this position because you can be called a Levite not just because you were born in this social category.

Question: What does it mean that the Levites cannot work the land, but they can have cities and pastures?

Answer: The Levites had no right to have their own land. They could only live by serving people and people paid them for it. Therefore, the entire territory of the state was divided into districts where they taught the people.

Question: So, working the land means working directly with the will to receive?

Answer: No, they were already above that and could only teach.

The Altar—Point Of Connection Of All Desires

625.01Prophets, Joshua, 22:12; 22:16: And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.

“Thus said the whole congregation of the Lord, ‘What treachery is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that you have built an altar that you might rebel this day against the Lord.

The two and a half tribes of Israel, who left Shiloh, reached the outskirts of Jordan and built a huge altar there.

The altar is that point of connection between us from which we raise all our thoughts and desires to the Creator. This is not a structure that burning is performed on. In spirituality, it has completely different functions.

In other words, the most important thing for the Israelites was to limit the places or, if I may say, the thoughts regarding the sacrifices: Why I am doing this? And this can only come from the one place that unites the whole people.

Therefore, the children of Israel rebelled very strongly and rose up against those who had gone beyond Jordan, because the altar should be the single place for the whole world. This is the place where all desires of all people are connected with intentions directed toward the Creator.

To The Court Of Elders

559Prophets, Joshua, 20:4: And he shall flee to one of those cities, and he shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city to them, and give him a place, and he shall dwell among them.

If a man considers himself ready to get in touch with other desires, with other people, to rise to the next level of correction, to greater connection on the path to the desire of Adam, then he should decide this only in the court of elders.

Elders are those who have attained the highest degree of GAR. They sit at the gates of the city and decide whether or not to let him climb the next step. He must pass this exam.

Question: I do not want to mix this world with the spiritual world, but nevertheless, in some eastern villages such councils of elders still exist. Can we say that this is a projection onto our world?

Answer: This is the natural state of humanity when it appoints elders as its judges.

Question: Will we come to this someday?

Answer: It will come automatically but not in this form, of course: a city, a gate, old people sitting on stones, you come to them, and they begin to discuss something.

Question: Still, the Torah speaks of a city of criminals. What decision do the elders make? That a person has transgressed the law unintentionally?

Answer: No, there are different states and different settlements, cities. If a man wants to be judged fairly, correctly, then he goes to such people, and they make their own judgment about him.

For The Sake Of Correcting A Common Soul

509Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel.

“God, God, the Lord, God, God, the Lord, He knows, and Israel, he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the Lord, save us not this day.

If we have built us an altar to turn away from following the Lord, or if to offer upon it burnt-offering or meal-offering, or if to offer peace-offerings upon it, let the Lord Himself require it (Joshua, 22:21-22:23).

Question: Before starting the war in Trans-Jordan, ambassadors were sent there to find out the intentions of the two and a half tribes of Israel, who went beyond the Jordan and built an altar there.

The tribes of Manasseh, Gad and Reuben explained their actions by the fact that years would pass and Jordan would become a border and divide the people. Therefore they were afraid that the ten tribes remaining on the other side of the Jordan would want to deprive them of the opportunity to pray and serve God in a single temple. And just to show that they are one people, they built an altar.

Why were they afraid of what others would think?

Answer: We are talking about the internal connections between all the desires of the broken soul of Adam. For the sons of Israel, the main thing is that they be together, because only then does the personal correction of each affect everyone else—all common desires.

They do not think about themselves, but about the general correction. Everything is only for the sake of correcting one common soul. Therefore any separation and estrangement is terrible for them.

Comment: You also constantly say the only thing the people should do is to wish to reach unity.

My Response: Yes, the most important thing is to come to a common opinion, thoughts, to the Creator, under which everyone can unite and destroy any partitions separating us, so that there is nothing that would separate a person from a person. Only mutual striving for a single goal. Everyone, based on their soul, should try to do this as efficiently as possible for everyone. This is called “one altar,” “one temple.”

Did The Creator Give Rest To Israelites?

747.01Prophets, Joshua, 21:42, 21:43: And the Lord gave them rest from about, according to all that He swore to their fathers; and no man of all their enemies stood before them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.

Not a thing was lacking from all the good things that the Lord spoke to the house of Israel; all came to pass.

Question: What does it mean that the Creator gave rest to Israelites as promised? What rest can Israelites have?

Answer: First, after a correction at one level or another, they continue to exist in it. And this is their achievement.

Second, they do not stand still as we might think. There is no rest in their work. They just have not yet moved to another stage. And to keep this step means to expand the use of your egoism for bestowal and love from the level that you have reached and continue further.

It is not a small job. For example, one reaches the degree of Bina, although there are many degrees there, and he stops.

Comment: Peace!

My Response: There is no peace in life at all. The desire is continuously transformed, developed, revealed, and a person must gradually make it similar to the Creator.

Perhaps this movement is not so much in height as in width, in Hassadim and not in Hochma. Still, it is a necessary work, and the children of Israel were engaged in it.

Question: In the spiritual work descents and ascents constantly occur. Do you ever feel at peace?

Answer: I have no idea what peace there can be before the final correction. It simply does not exist in nature. I do not know what will happen next because such steps occur after the final correction, such crazy work, such heights!

I do not think that a person who is already climbing these steps is generally asking for peace. He has no such query. As Caleb said to Joshua Ben Nun: “I am this day eighty-five years old. I am still as strong this day as I was on the day that Moses sent me. And now, give me this mountain, of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the ‘Anakim were there, and that the cities were big and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as the Lord spoke.” That is, a person is constantly demanding work more and more.

How Long Will YouBe Lazy?

747.01Prophets, Book of Joshua, 18:3: And Joshua said, “How long are you slack to come in to possess the land, which the Lord God of your forefathers has given you?

Question: What does it mean that Israel is too lazy to take the land?

Answer: If people are afraid to go against their egoism, are unable to unite, and master the quality of bestowal and love above themselves, then this is a problem. It is natural because you need to go against the ego, which is the primordial nature of man.

Therefore, friction arises between the children of Israel: who is more, who is less, etc. They no longer work in connection with the Creator but as if who would rise above whom.

Joshua Ben Nun (son of Nun) inspires them and shows them how to take a few more steps for the sake of connection among themselves. Then the Creator is revealed even more between them.

Question: You often say that laziness is good. What do you have in mind?

Answer: Laziness is a good quality when a person clearly evaluates his desires and does not do any other actions, except for bestowal and love. This is commendable. But egoistic laziness, when you want more for yourself, must be overcome.

“He Had No Sons, But Daughters”

559Prophets, Joshua, 17:3-17:4: But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters; and these are the names of his daughter: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” According to the commandment of the Lord, he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.

A daughter is the will to receive without an intention to bestow, which so far has no personal correction.

There are such desires in a person for which he cannot acquire the correct intention. Yet, since these desires exist, he wants to reach their correction. But how? He does not have such capabilities.

Man symbolizes the intention for the sake of the Creator, and woman is the desire without intention. Therefore, desire plus the correct intention can give birth to a correct action called a child, children. Therefore, a woman cannot do anything by herself.

However, since they have accurately checked and made sure that they do not have any suitable desires, this leads to the fact that they seemingly complain to the Creator, “Why are desires created in us without the opportunity to correct them?”

Question: Still, inheritance was given to daughters. Why?

Answer: Because the most important thing is the earth, the female part. The male part gives only intention to the female desire. Therefore, female desire cannot be destroyed. You must find a suitable intention for it. Thus, we see that this problem is not resolved yet. The Creator did not provide people with capabilities to correct, and yet, correction must happen.

Question: Why does the Torah always speak about sons being born and not daughters?

Answer: Because the most important thing is the intention. The desire is there, but the intention is given by the Creator from above.

Question: When the intention to bestow appears, it means that a son is born. Is a daughter born in parallel or together with this desire?

Answer: In the original narrations of the Torah (Bible), it is said that male and female are almost always born together. Then we see that each time there are more and more confusing states because we are constantly advancing.

As the correction progresses, problems and inconsistencies arise between the male and female parts. Thus, we must search for the male and then the female part.

When It Is Not Possible To Work With Desire

583.03Question: What is murder in spirituality?

Answer: If the desire falls out of the right correction and I cannot work with it yet, it is called that I killed it.

Question: What does unintentional murder mean?

Answer: It happens that I could not fulfill the thing I was given to work with. Or maybe the opposite is true, I was given work with an egoistic desire and instead of transforming it into a positive, altruistic one, I simply killed it.

I could not overcome it in the correct way, but I as if destroyed it, it just disappears from me for now. In fact, it does not disappear anywhere, but I can no longer work with it.

Question: Then, who is the judge in me?

Answer: Practically, it is me on the next degree. In addition, the other groups, the friends, and Joshua leading me forward are all special forces that explain to me where I am.

In principle, the judge is a view from the next, higher degree at the lower one.

From Personal Desires To The Common

934These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the (houses of) the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the Lord, at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And they made an end of dividing the land. (Joshua 19:51)

The common desire that the Creator created and attracts to Himself so that it can attain Him should work the same way as the Creator, on the quality of bestowal and love, and must act the same way as we do in the group. When we unite in a group we can understand how we relate to the Creator with the help of our common desire, intention, practice, and experience.

It turns out that without realizing this connection, we will not be able to turn to the Creator. We won’t even know what to address and how to address it. Therefore each tribe must work on its part in order to gather and turn to the Creator precisely from its common collective desire. And then they will all unite together into a common nation.

A person should sort out all his desires and build them in such a way that he starts with small desires, and then with their help moves to all the big ones so that they are directed to the connection between him and others. And then based on this state, from these actions, from this experience, he can already understand how to turn to the Creator.

Question: What does “small desires” mean?

Answer: These are minor egoistic desires that I can handle. And there are those with which I am not able to work yet and I know that I cannot. But it is precisely because I work with small desires that I get closer to big ones.

Closing The Segment Of Correction

251And he shall dwell in that city until he stand before the tribunal for judgment, until the death of the High Priest that shall be in those days. Then shall the slayer return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from which he fled (Prophets, Joshua, 20:6).

We are talking about the fact that a certain segment of correction is closed, and then a new stage begins that a person no longer relates directly to. Then he can, as if, start a new life.

Question: Does it mean that this is a new cycle, the path of correction again?

Answer: The length of punishment is determined from above, but the person does not know for how long.

Question: It is written that after the death of the High Priest, the murderer can return to his city, to his home. Does he return to his old desires or already to some kind of new ones?

Answer: Everything that he has done wrong is erased and he begins a new cycle.

However, he definitely gets credit for everything that happened because it is due to these years that he undergoes corrections, and therefore now is able to live them again in the correct form. Everything he experienced accumulates in him, does not disappear anywhere, and later he uses this experience.
