The amazing system called Jethro is part of the general spiritual system that includes egoistic attributes as well as several altruistic attributes that are totally the opposite.

The connection between Jethro and Moses was kept through Zipporah and the children.

Question: Why was Moses allowed to marry Zipporah, Jethro’s daughter? Is it because the nation wasn’t divided into tribes then?

Answer: We mustn’t look at that from the perspective of division. All the biblical figures throughout history took wives from hostile tribes. Jacob, for example, married Rachel and Leah who were the daughters of his greatest enemy Laban.

Jethro doesn’t support or side with Moses either, but there is a very clear connection between them as Jethro is totally immersed in Pharaoh (the ego) with one foot and, thanks to that, can be connected to Moses.

The question is about what Moses did with Jethro for forty years. Why did he need this intermediate level? Forty years is the level of Bina on every level.

Having studied forty years with Pharaoh, Moses spends the next forty years with Jethro and only then does he spend the same number of years with the nation of Israel.

Question: If Pharaoh is the higher level of study, why must he study from Jethro afterward?

Answer: It is in order to know how to change to the attribute of bestowal. A true connection is formed between opposite attributes, just as was the case with Jacob and Laban’s daughters. What is more, Jacob had concubines and servants who also had his children. This may seem like an unclear mess, but this is how the world of desires is created, and this is how they are tightly connected.

Ruth, the mother of King David’s dynasty, belonged to Moab, which was a nation that hated the Israelis. David’s heir is the Messiah Son of David, who will bring the entire world to unity many years later at the end of time.

An ordinary person who doesn’t see the whole picture doesn’t see the beginning and the end, the entrance and the exit of this system. He doesn’t understand why it closes this way, but the integral system closes precisely in this way.

The High Priest is the highest point, the highest intention through which a person communicates with the Creator. In our world, he was chosen by the great assembly.

The hierarchical division of the people of Israel began from the time of Moses. After he received the Torah and brought the people into the wilderness, his father-in-law Jethro taught him how to correctly organize the hierarchy of the people.

Before then people always were in a circle, gathered around Mount Sinai and feeling that they were equals. In the Exodus from Egypt, they needed to work in three lines, correctly integrating their egoistic desires, arranged according to a hierarchy with an altruistic intent that had to be circular. This was because even though it was directed toward the Creator, it was derived from the center of the circle. How was it possible to integrate these two things? For this, Jethro gave Moses a method for correctly handling the people.

People must yearn to become round in their intention but not in their mutual compliance with movements toward the Creator. The equality can be only in intent because from the start the desires are not ours. They are given to each one of us from above.

Jethro suggested dividing the people into tens, hundreds, thousands, and so forth. Each of the twelve tribes went to its camp. All kinds of unifications and connections between them were prohibited. For example, it was not allowed for them to marry others from another tribe. Each tribe had to keep to itself, but simultaneously, they had to advance together.

The correct combination between individuals and a single unity was revealed through choosing ministers for tens, hundreds, and thousands, while the High Priest was chosen from the tribe of Levi, which was composed of Levites and Cohens only.

In this way Jethro established and arranged hierarchical work with the ego because he had been a servant of Pharaoh. However, because he precisely knew the entire system of Pharaoh he could be an intermediary between Pharaoh and Moses.

Question: Where are we today? The people of Israel left Egypt, received the Torah on Mount Sinai, understood that they had some kind of task, a mission, and what was next? What kind of task has been placed before us today?

Answer: Our actual task today is to develop the people of Israel in the land of Israel so that they will know what they must do to sustain themselves and continue to exist.

When our people will ensure their existence, they must explain why they exist, for what higher purpose. Only if we carry out this higher purpose and yearn to bring all of humanity to adhesion with the Creator do we merit being connected with Him.

This knowledge must reach the people, and we will attract the Light that must illuminate us when we go to meet it through our yearning to connect and provide an example for the entire world. However, if we don’t connect, then that same Light will illuminate us through its backside.

If we are not ready to approach this Light, it will be revealed to us in an opposite way, and as a result, we will experience terrible misfortune such as wars, disasters and another holocaust like we passed through 70 years ago.

We see from day to day how the world situation is developing and becoming worse. Everyone in the world is beginning to talk about anti-Semitism as if it were a normal phenomenon. No one is ashamed anymore, and no one considers it to be bad. England, Scandinavia, and Spain, essentially all of them, are recognized as being openly anti-Semitic, as if it were self-evident.

In fact, they are right, after all, we have not transmitted the method of correction to the world. We have not carried out our obligation.

Comment: The problem is that not everyone believes that this is really our obligation, our function.

Answer: It is necessary to listen to what the sages, the Kabbalists, say. We have no other choice. We will never attain the truth as long as we have not corrected ourselves and have not attained revelation. So we cannot sit and wait until the truth becomes known to us. It will never be known to us if we don’t advance toward it.

We welcome everyone in this world to connection and a simple unity. We are not required to wait until the heavens open and we see the spiritual world. Sit in a circle with others and in 20 to 30 minutes you will see how you begin to feel this higher power. In the center of this circle, in the center of our connection, we feel the origin of a unique force.

This is possible and this must be done quickly among all of the people of Israel! The problem is that it is not for nothing that these people are called “stiff-necked.” In spite of it all, you must not despair, for the people of Israel in relation to the entire world are like the Cohens and Levites among the people of Israel.

Although we are not ready to be Cohens and Levites, the people of Israel who yearn to be Yashar El (straight to the Creator), will be required to become them, since the world will require this from us.

The moment that we begin to seriously realize this task together, and the moment we begin to carry out this unification of the people of Israel, the entire world will settle down. Everyone will look at us and say, “See what they are doing! We will wait. They have initiated something special.”

The nations of the world will feel this because within them are the roots of the shattering due to the sin of Adam HaRishon with the tree of knowledge, and if Israel begins to correct this sin, then the nations of the world will feel this, “Oh, they are making this correction! We didn’t even know that it was possible to correct this at all and come closer, whereas the Jews are doing it!”

The nations of the world will immediately change their attitude towards us. We will begin the correction and it will be known immediately to the entire world. We don’t even need to advertise anything about it. Not long ago, I published a large article in the largest American newspaper, The New York Times and, after that in the English newspaper The Telegraph and in the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera. However, in the future, there won’t be a need to advertise anything. The nations of the world will write about it themselves because they will feel it themselves.

However, if we don’t bring them this correction and don’t carry out our task, the anti-Semitism, which we are now witnessing, will continue to grow. So, come. Let’s cross the wilderness quickly and reach the land of Israel.

The Torah has existed for thousands of years and we must understand what it represents. Basically, there is a means in our world through whose help it is possible to attain the goal of creation. But what is the goal of creation? Come, let’s clarify this.

In front of me is a universe, stars, the sun, and the moon. Under my feet is the earth and on it all of the still, vegetative, and animate nature, and humans. All of this exists. Why does this exist? Where does this come from? What is it for? For what purpose does it exist?

The Torah explains all of this to me. It is designed to inform me why and for what I live, the reasons for my existence and what the result is, where I am going. In short, the Torah can teach me about everything without leaving any space or location empty.

So how does one acquire this knowledge? How does one penetrate into this vast and wonderful wisdom that is found above our reality and extends to the spiritual worlds?

It is possible to reach this by means of defined general rules that seem to me very far from nature and its laws, like: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology, and other fields of natural science. Instead of bringing me scientific facts, they say: “And you shall love your friend as yourself.”

This is not at all clear to me. Give me precise formulas! Love is a simplistic idea. Nobody knows what to do with it; each one pulls it towards himself in whatever way he likes, and “rolls” it out from one end to the other. Ultimately, we don’t grant any seriousness, stability, or real power to this characteristic.

However, if a person undergoes suffering, things become serious; this we understand. Whereas, love lacks all power in our eyes, it lacks clarity; it doesn’t underlie the foundation of the world. And therefore it is very difficult for us to internalize the concept that is called a “great general rule of the Torah.” We cannot seriously relate to it.

But in reality, an approach that moves through love possesses greater weight and cannot be destroyed. This is an “iron rule” from which it is impossible to deviate; it requires us to pass through all of the restrictions, all of the threats, through everything, so that we will attain that concept of “And you shall love your friend as yourself.” Specifically through attaining the characteristic of love, we explore the whole world, understand it, and attain all of reality.

And so true love is different from what we imagine to ourselves; yet we have a problem with this when we relate to this concept with the utmost seriousness and begin to realize it.

Once, many years ago I was present at the funeral of a young couple that were killed in an accident right before their wedding. While reciting the Kaddish the chief Rabbi of the city, a person who understood the wisdom of Kabbalah, then said with tears in his eyes that what we lack is love, that only thanks to that can we correct all crimes and defects.

I didn’t understand him then and I thought that probably this is how it is customary to say a eulogy. And only much later, after I studied for some time, I understood what he meant. Yet all the other people related to his words the way I did in the beginning, even though there were many spiritual people there…

I don’t need to change my desires. I don’t need to limit, break, or suppress them but only direct them properly towards the right goal.

It is written: The Torah, “Leviticus,” 21:5: They shall not make bald patches on their heads, nor shall they shave the edge of their beard, nor shall they make cuts in their flesh.

First I choose two desires and find out how I can connect them so that together they will attain the next level by uniting on this level into one whole. Then on the next level, they will find more desires that can also connect and unite in order to attain a whole union on the that level. This continues according to a hierarchy, until the one uppermost desire connects all the other desires to such an extent that the Creator can be revealed.

Although the desires are connected and are focused on unity, they are different. The outcome is a mosaic in which each part complements the others until they reach perfection. On the one hand, the perfection is revealed in it, but, on the other hand, we see different parts, colors, and shapes.

We can read this mosaic and understand its unity since is it made of many parts. If it were the simple revelation and clarity of unity in the form of one white Light, it would be much more difficult for us to grasp it. But when a mosaic of desires plays a whole rainbow of colors, we perceive it as a melody.

Question: Doesn’t this colorfulness change into one color later?

Answer: It is perceived as one whole, but it is actually made of many shades. Otherwise we wouldn’t be able to feel anything.

We hear the harmony in music, and although there are thousands of sounds and different transitions, we perceive it all as general harmony, as unity. But if we simply spread out the system of notes (the score) into its components, it would seem as if there is no unity.

It is actually for this reason that when people from different nationalities, mentalities, and professions get together, they can reach the one single goal, the one desire. The more we ascend towards unity, the greater the difference we will feel among us so that we can achieve it.

Question: The sons of the great priest Aaron, Nadav and Avihu, died because they skipped the level they had to go through. These are the kind of mistakes that happen all the time.

Answer: A person wants to sacrifice himself; he yearns unknowingly and without understanding that the spiritual action he performs is beyond his powers.

But this action is necessary so he can see the limits of his powers, so that his yearning forward will die, which means shatter; it disappears due to the unprepared form he made. But later he will be able to perform it as a result of many small actions.

Try to jump three meters high! The sons of Aaron wanted to take this level of in order to bestow for the sake of the Creator, for the sake of the whole nation, but it was beyond human powers, beyond the level they were on. Therefore, eventually the attribute of judgment was revealed, the rigidity, fire that can be both good and bad. In this case it swallowed them.

Question: But they did it with the right intention.

Answer: Their intentions were not justified. How can you go on such a mission if you don’t have the Creator’s clear support? All your attributes, all your actions of bestowal, stem only from the power you receive from Above.

You are nothing but a small egoist. Some new egoistic attributes are revealed in you, while you have to receive altruistic attributes, to connect them and to reveal the middle line on which you should work. This is called sanctifying a property, the attribute of bestowal, when you attract your ego, correct it by the altruistic attribute of the Light, and keep on advancing.

But if you don’t do that you have no right to use only the left line, no way!!

This is especially true on the level of the sons, since this is a small level. But Nadav and Avihu took the great egoistic potential that was revealed, which wasn’t prepared for them at all. It is like a youth who takes upon himself what even an adult cannot do since the adult understands that it isn’t in his power to do, while the youth thinks that he will be able to perform the mission he is given. But things aren’t that simple.

A the saying goes: “If youth knew; if old age could.” Therefore, old people realize that they cannot do something and don’t do it, while the foolish youth think that they can handle a task and gets so fired  up that he gets burnt.

A woman is a symbol of the desire. The desire should be raised in the spiritual work to the level where it is purified of all its egoistic mixtures.

As it states in Zohar La’am, “Leviticus,” “Amor,” item 38: Moses said: “It is a Mitzva (commandment) that the great priest should marry a virgin.” As it says: “he should not take a widow, a divorcee, a desecrated or a prostitute, but he should take a virgin for a wife.” Why should he take only a flawless virgin? It is because a woman is a cup of blessing, “if it has been tasted it has been flawed.” This refers to Malchut that is called a cup of blessing. The great priest who sacrifices the offering before the Lord should be whole and flawless in all his parts, since the defects disqualify the priests. Whole in his body, whole in his Nukva, so that he can keep the saying: “you are completely beautiful my wife and flawless.”

Therefore the names “widow,” “divorcee,” “desecrated,” prostitute.” and “married” all mean that the desire is not yet completely pure and free of the ego. It is only after the total purification that it becomes worthy of the level on which the priest works.This level is called a virgin.To become a virgin means to ascend to the level that isn’t corrupted by the egoistic inclination.Then it can be used as the Nukva by the priest since it is free of any egoistic parts and inclusions and thus he can marry her. This means that with the help of such a desire, he can now receive the Upper Light to perform the Zivug de Haka’a and then give birth to the next level.

Torah, “Leviticus,” 10:1: And Aaron’s sons, Nadav and Avihu, each took his pan, put fire in them, and placed incense upon it, and they brought before the Lord foreign fire, which He had not commanded them.

Incense is the Upper Light that rises from below to above from the lowest most egoistic and heavy stratum. It was forbidden to do this.

The sons of Aaron discovered an immense egoistic desire. Yet, they could not correct it because the Light that was discovered in this desire simply caused a short circuit, and so they died.

Question: Is it possible to compare this with the development of communism in Russia, uncorrected people decided to move immediately to principles of brotherhood and love?

Answer: This was a bitter mistake to which it is now necessary to return, but now they are ready to move forward completely differently without suppressing the initiative from below. This is the same error that the Russian people carried out, and, therefore, the Creator didn’t forgive them for this.

They trampled upon the most essential conditions: the reason the entire creation was created, why the Creator is concealed, and why we need to go through states like these. It was necessary to reach the implementation of this condition through gradual development of an awareness of their state and the acquisition of freedom of choice.

They just put their hands down on this freedom of choice, and so this entire program turned out to be completely unnecessary and harmful, but, at the same time, it revealed a multitude of conflicting and contradictory characteristics among the inhabitants of eastern Europe. I suppose that it is specifically these characteristics that will be required to create the right human society, similar to the Creator.

This experience was necessary because it determined and as it imprinted such inclinations in the people of Eastern Europe that make it possible for them to take an active part in the correction of the human evil inclination.

Thus throughout human history, we have burned “strange fire” again and again, and have invited problems upon ourselves: another fire descending from above and burning everything. However, this is the next stage in the development of the characteristic of “Aaron” in a person after which the correction comes. Thanks to this, the characteristic of Aaron rises higher and higher, makes mistakes, rises upward, and falls again.

Spiritual advancement is realized only through the discovery of the next evil. On the way toward it, we think that we can overcome the evil. So, it is compulsory, useful, and correct.

Every revolution has its first part: a romantic phase in which people have a great desire for a bright future until they begin to “devour” their children. The connection between the root and its branches is discovered in everything in this world.

Question: Is it possible to avoid this initial mistake?

Answer: Beginning with our time it is possible because we don’t need to discover problems anymore; they already have been discovered. As we advance upward, when we gather amongst ourselves, we begin to discover problems between us, but not actively, not through wars, not through quarrels and disputes. All of that is a thing of the past. Rather, it is only in discovering a kind of fire of hatred, all kinds of rejections and unpleasantness, among us. However, all of this will pass rapidly, within a number of minutes, really.

Certainly, we will not pass through this process just like that. It must be discovered in us because we need to learn about it so that we can carry out the right actions and absorb it into us. But it doesn’t take much time.

Torah, “Leviticus,” 10:1 – 10:3: And Aaron’s sons, Nadav and Avihu, each took his pan, put fire in them, and placed incense upon it, and they brought before the Lord foreign fire, which He had not commanded them. And fire went forth from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. Then Moses said unto Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke [when He said], ‘I will be sanctified through those near to Me, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron was silent.

Fire is the Light of Hochma that the sons of Aaron tried to elevate, sanctify, and raise to the next level. However, they were unable to do this because they made the same mistake that Aaron did. However, this mistake was necessary for the discovery of that stratum of the ego that still was concealed in the entire camp, in all of the people, in the entire group.

As usual, everything was revealed through mistakes. There is nothing to be done about it; that is how we advance. That is how our problems are solved.

The moment that Aaron corrected his error with the golden calf, the next level was revealed immediately. His sons, Nadav and Avihu wanted to make an even higher ascent. This is the same Aaron, but on his next level, called “sons.”

They quickly tried to bring all of the shattered souls together, including such desires upon which they were not ready to carry out spiritual work, to overcome with their aspiration to connect between them. In other words, it was necessary at all times to measure very precisely to what level one can be close to someone.

Suppose that you and I are friends. We can meet, sit in a coffee shop, or go on a trip together. However, if I were to come to live with you or you with me then big problems would pop up between us because in us, in human beings, such egoistic characteristics would be discovered that we could not handle and overcome them. Instead of my yearning for an even greater connection with you, I would not succeed in getting rid of thoughts that cannot be overcome, that you ultimately would leave me.

Thus, everything must be done gradually. However, the sons of Aaron performed an action that was before its time. But if they hadn’t done this, then the evil would not have been revealed. So, in the life of the group, among people, in every person, there is always some obstacle.

As a general rule, in our day the feeling of the shattering is discovered through group activities. However, this is not the shattering but the discovery of the evil that is concealed in us that we must discover, feel, and in no way be sorry and grieve about. Instead, we must be happy and thankful for its discovery, and then begin to work with it, correcting it.

Question: It follows that, since they were not corrected, the sons of Aaron seemingly leaped a level?

Answer: Every level begins from the night: “…And there was evening and there was morning, one day” (Genesis 1:5).

So everything begins from the discovery of evil—always! The moment that Aaron corrected the sin of the golden calf, the next level was revealed to him immediately: his sons who wanted to add an even greater connection to what Moses did with Aaron and the people.

The Midrash “BeShalach”: “The Egyptians were defeated by the ten plagues on the sea just as they were defeated by the ten plagues in Egypt. The ten plagues on the Red Sea are not described in details in the Midrash (“The Great Commentary”).

All the attributes and the revelations that are described in the oral Torah are necessary for one’s birth in the spiritual world just as the labor pains and the preparation process for childbirth are. Without what we call such Gevurot (rigid forces) and constraint, the connection between the mother and the newborn wouldn’t be revealed.

During this process different hormones and forces are extracted that later help a child grow. Therefore, children who are born in a natural process are more complete than children who come into the world by a cesarean section.

In other words, the exodus from Egypt cannot take place any other way since it symbolizes a person’s birth into the new spiritual world, into the attribute of bestowal, in which he doesn’t feel himself inside a body anymore, although it still exists.

Therefore, there cannot be a smooth birth, and as a result childbirth in our world isn’t smooth either. But if we didn’t intervene in the birth process by different surgical devices and catalysts, which seemingly ease the delivery process, children would be born much healthier. All these devices are unnecessary. We will gradually understand how inefficient they are and will begin to limit their use.

Question: But is the labor pain really necessary?

Answer: Yes, but it depends on the mother. If she has proper spiritual preparation for childbirth, she will not feel pain. There will be pressures but pressures like doubts and like clarifications. She will go “through the water like on land.”

On every level all the spiritual transitions are a kind of birth.
