When a person seems to be on the verge of reaching the goal, surprisingly he experiences weakness appears. “Why bother? What is the point? I’m tired. I’m fed up. It is hopeless.” At precisely this moment that one must understand that they are being tested in their aspiration toward the goal.

To actually attain it, a person needs to add even greater aspiration here, a new drive, to inject even more momentum, enthusiasm, reassessment of values, and importance of the goal, and then they will achieve it.

Question: So in practical terms, a person has come close, but in front of them stands a tall mountain that appears insurmountable?

Answer: Yes, it is precisely now that they must add importance to the goal in order to jump up, climb, and run up this mountain.

Everything that happens around us on this vast scale of society or the universe as a whole, happens according to a specific immense plan, and we exist within this plan. Our task is to align ourselves correctly with this plan. However, under no circumstances should we attempt to alter what comes from the outside; rather, we must correct ourselves so that we adapt to this external movement.

Question: In that case will I perceive whatever happens as having arrived at the right time?

Answer: It arrives at the right time, normally and correctly. And suddenly I understand the inherent correctness of everything taking place and realize just how perfectly suited it is for me.

Question: And I do not regret anything?

Answer: There is nothing to regret because all of this is unfolding outside of me, before my eyes. It serves only to show me the steps that I must take within myself in order to perceive it correctly, agree with it, unite with it, and move further in resonance with it.

Question: In balance with it?

Answer: Yes, in harmony.

The most important thing for a person is to correct oneself along the path of life. Anyone who points out your shortcomings is doing a tremendous amount of work on your behalf.

In order to discover these shortcomings (let alone correct them, but at least simply to discover them) you will run into a vast number of serious obstacles, bang your head against the wall, and get yourself into all sorts of troubles.

People suddenly end up in prison, come out years later, start over again, and so on. But someone who can truly point out your shortcomings and you are able to feel them, understand them, become aware of them, saves you an enormous amount of suffering.

Comment: We consider such a person an enemy: he pointed out my flaws, he humiliated me.

My Response: Humiliation is a different matter. I can recognize my shortcomings and at the same time be grateful that he is showing them to me. But the one who says nothing or even praises me, perhaps he praises me maliciously so that I would not pay attention to my own correction.

Question: No wonder you always say that the one who criticizes you is closer to you than the one who praises you?

Answer: Yes. Of course.

Question: Do you truly feel that way?

Answer: Yes, I do.

Question: Do you actually listen when someone suddenly tells you something critical?

Answer: I very much would like to.

Question: What would we see if we lived just a single day? Besides this transition, what else should we see? If I am living solely in the moment?

Answer: You want to drink it in, to gulp it down until you are gasping for breath! You want to experience it from beginning to end, to draw everything in between, to draw it all into yourself!

Question: What does it mean to live this moment correctly?

Answer: To live it correctly means to attain it. Life is but a moment. Who is in control of it?

Question: Is that what we need to attain?

Answer: Yes. And furthermore, for what purpose was this moment given to me? What was I supposed to do What did I fail to do? And perhaps, do I still have the opportunity to do it?

Question: Are you talking about a constant work within this moment?

Answer: Yes, within that moment, that single moment.

Question: Then will there be another moment, and I will ask the same questions and move in the same way?

Answer: I do not know if there will be another moment. That remains unknown.

Question: Exactly! So, this is how I should be living this moment?

Answer: Yes.

Question: But people do not live this way, right?

Answer: People do not live this way, but they should!

Question: Should they? Will we be taught how to live like this?

Answer: No, I think that capacity is already built into us from the start. That is just the nature of human beings.

Comment: So are we controlled in such a way that this internal mechanism, our intellect and all these ongoing probing questions, is switched off and we just go on living like that.

My Response: The Creator made it this way on purpose.

Question: Why did He do that?

Answer: So that not too much would be demanded of us.

Question: Otherwise, He would demand it?

Answer: Of course!

Comment: Meaning: “What do you live for? What do you live each moment for? Who governs the world?” And so on, and so on.

My Response: Yes. If He had placed His own mind, the beginning, the end, all actions, and so on, into the creation, and we required to provide an answer to all this…

Question: So what is it that a person should understand? Let’s focus on the person.

Answer: A person must understand that there is a mystery in life that he must constantly strive to reveal. Not that someone else uncovered it long ago and now he can read and know about it; rather, he must dig deep within himself, within life, and within the Creator, and search for it himself.

Question: Is this what you call  a person’s real life?

Answer: This is life.

Question: What will he ultimately reach if he proceeds this way, if he takes these steps?

Answer: I do not know. Each one reaches something unique to themselves. Everyone has a completely precise, personal task in life!

Question: Is a person destined to arrive at this mission, at this root of one’s being, one way or another?

Answer: A person is nudged toward it, but I do not know whether he is going there. No one knows. Only the Creator. And even that may not be known in advance.

Question: So absolutely everything depends on the Creator—whether I move or not, everything?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Should I turn to the Creator and ask: “Reveal my path to me”? Or is that useless?

Answer: Try to ask.

Question: Should my prayer be to live life correctly, in a good way?

Answer: It should.

Question: What would you say to a person now?

Answer: You should live in such a way that in every moment you are trying to uncover the mystery of life.

Question: What kind of conflict exists within a person?

Answer: It is a constant one because a person is created from two desires: egoistic and altruistic. However a true human being is one in whom there is a constant inner struggle between good and evil, one who deliberately pits their good against the evil.

Evil constantly rises up, surging upward, wanting everything for itself, and more. A person, if they wish to engage in self-correction, continually cultivates good within oneself, and remains constantly engaged in this inner struggle.

Question: So the evil within me, egoism, is always there; it is my nature?

Answer: Yes. And you ask the Creator to give you a good nature as well so that you can balance these two natures within you! You might say: “I ask the Creator to erase this evil nature from me.” No! No, that is not wise. Rather, ask that you be given a good nature, and that these two natures exist within you in balance, not one greater than the other, and not that the positive outweighs the negative.

The middle line between them is a wonderful state! I constantly remain in this balance. I stand on two legs above them. Only then can I fully, absolutely fully, feel both the minus and the plus, and all of nature is beneath me.

Question: So a person who contains both within him, his own nature and the nature of the Creator? Is that a harmonious person?

Answer: Of course! Then such a person is called Adam, similar to the Creator, because their inner quality, the one opposite to the Creator, also becomes similar to the Creator.

Question: Should I correct my path in accordance with criticism or not? What do you think?

Answer: I think you should not. If this criticism ties you even more strongly to your root, then it is good. This is what you must check!

Question: So I have a path I am following, and if criticism binds me more tightly to this path, then…?

Answer: Go.

Question: Go. And then can one relate to the critics with warmth and kindness?

Answer: Of course. It is from the Creator.

Question: That is, if you are criticized, let us not use harsh words like “hated,” but criticized, or if they try to knock you off the path; then you must hold on to this path even more?

Answer: I cannot tell each person in what exactly.

Question: And what would you say to anyone who is being pressured from all sides? How can he hold on?

Answer: If you are being pressed from all sides, then the best thing is: disconnect, step aside, and look from the side at yourself and at them. And you will see to what extent you may be right, to what extent not. And then make your decision.

Comment: I thought that the law of mercy emanates from above, and that everything is held by this law. I thought this was the main law of life.

Answer: Why would it be so? I look at inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature and see no observance of such laws there. No, but humans, with their imagination, have scribbled countless books and theories about it. But generally speaking, no.

I think the worst human trait is inventing a future or surrounding reality for oneself based on one’s own desires.

Question: So this is a kind of violence? A person commits violence against nature?

Answer: Yes, and then he makes demands from nature: “Give me this!”

Comment: In other words, “You are merciful, and I want everyone around me to be merciful.”

My Response: Yes. If we reasoned soberly with nature, we would not make demands of nature, but we would demand of ourselves the correct attitude to ourselves, to others, to nature, to everything. And then, perhaps, we would get a hint about how the universe exists and in what way we can rise above it.

Question: So rather than demanding that the universe be merciful to me, I should demand that I be merciful to others?

Answer: Yes.

Question: “Merciful,” did I use the word correctly here?

Answer: It can be used like that, yes.

Question: Then what should be put into this word if we indeed come to being merciful? That I must be merciful to others, what should I invest in that?

Answer: I must do for others all the good and kind things that I would wish for myself. And under no circumstances should I imagine think that I will receive some kind of reward for it. Absolutely not!

Comment: This second part is very difficult: receiving nothing in return.

My Response: In this, in fact, lies the whole point of the first part.

Question: Then will I come into balance with the universe if I begin to move in this way, as you say?

Answer: If so, then yes. And then there will be no destruction, no self-destruction.

I like lazy people; they do little harm to the world.

Question: So, they don’t really contribute much, but at the same time they don’t cause harm?

Answer: Yes. That’s good!

Comment: But that’s some kind of complete complacency, like a stagnant swamp.

My Response: So what? We’ll just stroll through a green meadow and graze on some grass.

Question: A sandwich in your pocket, and that’s enough?

Answer: Yes. You don’t need anything else.

Question: Just breathe the air and let nature take its course. But seriously? You actually like rebels and revolutionaries.

Answer: Inside yourself! Within yourself, do whatever you want. Stage all kinds of revolutions and wars, but do it inside yourself. And everything else, let nature live in peace; don’t disturb it.

Quietly move out to the countryside, buy yourself a little house instead of your city apartment, and live a peaceful life with a wife and children. What else does a person really need?

Comment: To see out their old age.

My Response: Yes, to see out their old age.

Comment: But at the root of all prayers lies an initial sense of gratitude, and inevitably it is followed by some kind of request. It seems impossible to have a prayer without a request.

My Response: To achieve one’s purpose. The highest, greatest purpose is to become equal to the Creator!

Comment: There is no peace in that. It is a state of constant movement.

My Response: Inner peace! Because I am absolutely certain that in this way I will reach the goal since I surrender myself to the Creator and in this I go with Him. And He can do whatever He wants. I remain in absolute peace.

Question: But this movement toward Him, isn’t that a source of constant anxiety, trembling?

Answer: It’s not anxiety. There isn’t even much trembling in it. If I am confident in Him, if I have faith that I am in His hands, then I am like an infant in its mother’s arms. I cling to Him, that is all, in complete safety, peace.

But each time I check myself so that I can remain in His arms and draw even closer to Him despite my egoism with greater fervor. I need nothing else. I am already enveloped in this cocoon, right now.

So what is there to strive for? Why engage in comparing myself with others and calculating who is greater, who is better, who is higher?

Question: But what about our constantly growing egoism? You speak about it all the time.

Answer: That is so we always have the opportunity to be in dynamic closeness with the Creator.

Answer: It is so that we accomplish a great deal in life, so that we elevate this desire more and more, higher and higher, up to the level of the Creator.

Question: Which desire?

Answer: The desire for everything.

Question: You mean raising these egoistic desires to the Creator?

Answer: Yes.

Question: And what is the highest desire? What will we grow into from this point of impatience toward others?

Answer: To desire the Creator with the greatest passion.

Question: Does He want that?

Answer: Yes, that is exactly what He desires.

Question: So He wants us to have a passion for Him?

Answer: Yes. “Shuvu, bnei Israel, ad HaShem Elokecha” — “Return, O children of Israel, to the Lord Your God.”
