Potential for Convergence

963.6Question: Why can’t Jews outside of Israel unite? What is so special here? There are seven to eight million Jews living in America today. Who’s preventing them from uniting there? After all, the country does not prevent them.

Answer: The country does not interfere with them and yet they do not unite.

Comment: But in Israel also people do not unite.

My Response: There is an equivalence of root and branch. Therefore, those who strive for the spiritual root also strive for its earthly branch, meaning, the land of Israel. But we cannot understand this, we cannot imagine what it is and why it is so important to be in the earthly representation at the same time, in the land of Israel, in Jerusalem. We do not understand and do not feel it. But, in principle, I have met people who feel it very clearly.

Question: If nature should unite a certain number of people, and then it spreads to the whole of humanity, then those who are in Israel have a greater potential for this connection, right?

Answer: There are actions that must occur at the material level and then gradually rise to their spiritual identity.

Comment: If you look through the eyes of an ordinary person, then abroad, for example, in America, people there are more united than here. It is a nightmare what is going on here.

My Response: Yes, but that is why the nightmare happens, so that it must be overcome. By overcoming it, you will see how suddenly you find yourself in a state of spiritual forces.

How Not to Drown in a Raging Sea

229Mutual guarantee means that we completely depend on each other, as if we are sitting in a boat in the middle of the sea at risk of drowning in our egoism and finishing our lives in this way. If we want to reach the shore, we must stick together so that everyone helps the other.

No one will come to our aid from the outside until we help each other ourselves. Therefore, we must feel that we are in the same boat under the threat of dying. Only if we help each other get out of the ocean of common egoism surrounding us from all sides, can we be saved.

Imagine yourself in a boat in the middle of a raging egoistic sea. If we support each other, then the sea, with its inner force (the force of the Creator), will take our boat ashore.

The people of Israel were assembled from representatives of all seventy nations of the world to serve as an example of mutual guarantee for everyone else. This group has become a small kernel of connection within the entire vast humanity. The whole history of humanity forces the people of Israel to disperse around the globe in order to convey this message to humanity through philosophy, science, and most importantly, religion.

We are yet to reveal that only this force operates in the world and controls it from the center of reality. Now we are approaching the final stage of this development; it depends only on us whether we will reach it the easy way or through great suffering, problems, and wars.

The entirety of humanity has reached a state when it is ready to listen to the issue of mutual guarantee. Every day we feel more and more how connected we are with each other, so much so that it is impossible to separate us. All nations, countries, and governments are trying to somehow single out and isolate themselves, but nothing will work. We only plunge ourselves into suffering, through which we will understand more clearly that we are tightly connected and can achieve success only through mutual guarantee.

Otherwise, the world will not calm down. It will experience wars and difficult scrutiny. Someday, however, after many years of suffering and problems, we will realize that everyone depends on everyone, and there is no other force capable of governing us except the force of mutual guarantee.

All of humanity is in one small boat in the middle of a big raging sea. If we do not recognize our mutual responsibility, we will plunge ourselves into great troubles. Of course, in the end, we will decide that we are obliged to be in mutual guarantee.

Today, no country in the world can exist without connection with other countries. And it would be desirable for these connections to be positive. After all, bad connection causes troubles to others, and boomerangs back to you. Only through some human, normal agreements is it possible to come to peace.

Thus, we will learn that only mutual care and mutual guarantee can lead us to a good life. Then we will discover that there is another goal—to acknowledge the global force that operates in the world. It is impossible to govern the world without knowing this basic law of loving one’s neighbor as oneself.

This is no longer a simple caring for each other, but complete rejection of the egoistic approach. Instead of foreign ministers helping each country take care of itself, there will be other ministers taking care of the connection between everyone and its mutuality. After all, we will not be able to exist otherwise.

This will lead us to the need to study the laws of mutual guarantee, that is, the laws of the true reality. We live at a time when for the first time the world feels its integral dependence, interconnectedness, and therefore, responsibility to each other. No one has the right to do what he wants, regardless of others. After all, we see what this leads to. Everyone has to take the entire world into account.

This is how we come closer to the truth, which is not found in any country, in any government, or in any person. The truth is above us, and it lies in the good connection from each person to all people.

Thanks to Spiritual Impact

560It is possible to make the life of property owners miserable by contracts and strikes, so they assume the religion since they do not touch their properties, only the profits. Since the religion will be international, it will be possible to win the hearts of the Arab Sheiks with money and religious influence —so they assume the religion together with us as one unit, and promote it among the Arab workers and property owners.

That, in turn, will benefit Zionism. Because they will assume the religion that necessitates love and bestowal upon all humankind equally, they will not be envious of the robbing of the land, since they will understand that the land is the Lord’s. The standard of living of the Arabs will be equal to the standard of living of the Jews. This will be a great incentive for winning their hearts (Baal HaSulam, “The Last Generation”).

It may seem a little naive to us, but in general it is based on the laws of nature and is therefore true. If we actually acted in this way and brought ourselves closer to fulfilling these conditions, we would see the result.

Moreover, we must work not with the Arabs, but among ourselves. And as a result, they will have to change their attitude toward us. It depends not on them, but on us.

Unfounded Hatred

290Before the people of Israel begin any kind of rapprochement among themselves, they need to realize the reason and explore what forces are dividing them.

Baal HaSulam writes about narrow egoism based on hatred and the shameless use of one’s neighbor. It is narrow egoism that does not consider anything and wants to use everyone only for its own sake, which is our national quality and prevents us from uniting.

Question: Why is such hatred called unfounded?

Answer: Because it has no justification. The fact that nature encourages you to use your neighbor is understandable. But why does it act the way it does? Of course, you are not acting without a reason. You can always say: “I felt like that.”

Question: So unfounded hatred exists only among the Jews or among all nations as well?

Answer: Only among Jews.

Comment: But we see how people of other nations destroy each other with such hatred.

My Response: It does not matter. Let them eat each other if they want to, but there is still a reason for that. And with us it comes from above. The reason for our mutual rejection of each other is above the level of inanimate, vegetative, animate, and egoistic human nature. The Creator Himself, nature itself, arouses hatred in us so that we rise above it.

When we do not see any possibility of existing with our huge egoism, mutual hatred, and rejection, then we will rise above them.

Question: Is it like a game?

Answer: Of course, this is a game, to rise above yourself.

Obtain the Land of Israel

933The fact of the matter is that the Creator delivered our holy land from the foreigners and has given it back to us, yet we have not received the land into our own authority, since the time of reception has not yet come, as we explained concerning the complete attainment (Baal HaSulam,“A Speech for the Completion of The Zohar”).

We must keep trying to correct ourselves. The time and opportunity will come when we will be able to do this and will treat each other as the people of Israel should—with love and mutual support for each other, completely unselfishly.

Then we will feel ourselves truly in a country that is called straight to the Creator (Yashar El)— Israel.

Lack of Correspondence to the Holy Land

747.03Comment: It is written in all the sources that if the people of Israel do not correspond to the Holy Land, which they received as collateral, then it spits them out.

My Response: The disparity between the people’s qualities and the country’s qualities will lead to the fact that the country we are building will not be established. Since the land on which we would like to settle is special and is intended for us only when we are corrected, it will simply throw us out of here if we try to develop it while remaining uncorrected.

We should not think that this will happen through some special qualities. Just as the Romans came 2,000 years ago and threw us out of here, the same thing will happen now if we do not reach the quality of connection between us in an acceptable time frame.

During the Time of the Temple’s Existence

937Question: During the time of the Sanhedrin, a person was evaluated only in regard to spiritual crimes? What does it mean?

Answer: During the time of the Sanhedrin, people were in attainment of the Creator and that is why their crimes were evaluated only in relation to their spiritual descent. Meaning, that it was clear to a person that he cannot harm another because by doing so he harms himself.

Through the Creator, through this global force, global reason, global thought, everyone was intertwined in each other. That is why afterward, the fall from the spiritual degree was expressed in the fact that instead of love for your neighbor, hatred erupted.

And the Sanhedrin existed when everyone was, if not in love, then in mutual involvement among themselves, since this gradation is very wide. What does mutual love mean? Mutual interdependence, mutual inclusion into one another, understanding, and so on.

It was absolutely clear to people that by uniting with each other and with the Creator, they attain that spiritual life, that spiritual sensation of eternity and perfection that reigned between them then.

If in a person, because of some internal conditions, egoism that was constantly growing suddenly emerged, then he involuntarily fell and by this, caused harm to someone personally or to the society.

Then the Sanhedrin would make a joint decision on how to bring him up to the correct degree. People were engaged in that and not in humiliating and incarcerating.

This is how it was during the time of the Temple’s existence when there was a Temple in the heart of every person, which is the quality of bestowal.

Everything Belongs to the Creator

740.02Question: Who originally owned the land of Israel? According to the Torah, seven nations used to live in it and they were subsequently captured by the Israelites who left Egypt. Earlier, it was also said that God Himself bequeathed this land to Abraham. How can you explain who owned the land?

Answer: There is nothing to explain here. Everything happened as it was everywhere, with all nations, at all times. So it was instructed by the Creator from above, and so they fulfilled their mission.

Comment: But the Creator instructs everyone in their own way. And you claim that whoever is stronger is right. If one captured the land, this is how it has to be.

My Response: So it was said by the great commentator, the medieval scholar Rashi: “The nations of the world will come and ask: ‘Why did you take away the land that belonged to us? You expelled the seven nations of the world who had lived here on this land, captured it, and since then you have considered it yours?’”

Rashi writes that there is a very simple answer to be given to this: everything belongs to the Creator, not to the nations of the world and not to Israel. And if the Creator transfers the right to some action or possession, especially since it is written in the Torah, then this is how we should accept it.

Sanhedrin—The Court of Kabbalists

294.2The Sanhedrin existed at a time and in such a society when people were in attainment of the Creator. Therefore, trials and sentences were compensation for the fact that a person stumbled in relation to himself, and could have not stumbled.

The Sanhedrin’s decision was like a recommendation to a person about what to do to ascend spiritually. It was only about spiritual crimes. Therefore, if in the 70 years of the Sanhedrin’s existence (once in 70 years they were assessed as existing) at least one death sentence was passed, then this Sanhedrin was considered cruel, a fiend of hell.

Can you imagine? Once in 70 years! This is only in case when they came to the conclusion that nothing could be done with this person, it was impossible to somehow influence him. But in practice there were no such cases, there was always an opportunity to correct a person.

In those days, there was no death penalty, although the Torah mentions stoning, strangulation, beheading, and so on. All of this is purely theoretical. There was nothing really like that except correction in the right society.

A person should not be isolated from good society but placed there so that he has nowhere to escape. Then he will have no other choice but to pull himself up to the level of this society.

Subconscious Equality

933Question: Why do the Jews not have such servility and deep reverence for each other like other peoples?

Answer: Yes, we really see it today. And if you looked into the depths of the centuries, you would see that even 100 years ago there was no such thing and could not have been. Absolutely in no way!

In the army, in enterprises, anywhere, fraternity is characteristic of Jews—everyone is the same. This is so deeply embedded within the people that even when we began to take an example from the West in the organization of the country and everything else, even then the relationship remained the same.

From time immemorial, everyone has been absolutely equal. A person has never been respected for wealth, only for knowledge. There has never been any subservience to anyone. This inner brotherhood still does not go away, since then it has been in everyone.

And although there is no strong connection anymore, equality that I am no worse than another, reigns everywhere.

There is no slave in a Jew—something that practically exists in every nation. As all other nations have passed the slave-owning period, when some were masters, others were slaves. There was no such period for the Jewish people. There was a so-called slave to his master. But it has always been said: whoever buys a slave, buys himself a master.

These are the spiritual laws. There are whole volumes in the Talmud telling how to treat a slave. The slave lived as if under communism. You were obliged to take care of him, you could not force him morally or spiritually.

He worked as if for hire, and was only considered a slave, since the owner made a contract with him that he would buy him for a certain time. For six years he worked and in the seventh year he could leave the owner. This law is called “Shemitah” when everyone returns to freedom.

According to this law, in the 50th year of the use of land, it is returned to free use and does not remain assigned to anyone forever.

We do not understand how these laws provide a completely different basis for people to connect with each other. What does it mean that you are given land for only 50 years?! This is practically a small human century.

There is the same thing in slavery: a contract for 6 years. You were obliged to give a slave the opportunity to marry, a bondwomen, to get married. And if you used her as a concubine, you had to take her as a wife, buy her clothes and jewelry, which means, give her a completely different status.

This is completely different from the system that other nations had. Therefore, today it still exists in the blood.

And now we are already at a stage where we have to understand that there is nothing valuable, nothing to save, nothing to store, nothing to buy, nothing to stock up on. The world will turn over anyway, and the earth will swallow everything up.
