Actions And Intentions

laitman_624_03_0Question: How is it possible to differentiate between spiritual characteristics and beastly characteristics?

Answer: The intention determines everything. On one hand, a person can think about something sublime or be involved with music, painting, or literature and experience creative suffering, all of these with the goal of becoming famous and fulfilling himself intellectually and emotionally because a large ego is motivating him. All great people were very big egoists, because in order to reach the heights of achievement one requires a great egoistic power, a longing for advancement.

On the other hand, it is possible for a person to be involved with something very simple, a small business, but his intention is bestowal, like a person who gathers a group of children and involves them with music, intending to develop them. Characteristics themselves are neutral. Everything depends on the intent. So without knowing what the intention is, it is impossible to determine the nature of the activity. Nobody knows the feelings and motivations of another person; it is even difficult for a person himself to determine what the true motivation for his deeds are. The wisdom of Kabbalah is called the “Hidden Wisdom,” because a person’s intention is concealed from strangers.

Question: Which characteristics does a man need to attain the power of bestowal?

Answer: In spirituality, the gender of the physical body is unimportant. When a person bestows, he is called “male,” and when he receives, even though he is physically a male, in our world he is called “female.” That is how the wisdom of Kabbalah determines the spiritual gender of a person.

The Spiritual World Is A World Of Intentions

laitman_571_03Question: In a family, if the wife leads and the husband agrees with this, how is this reflected in their spiritual development?

Answer: There is no need to relate to the physical gender! Understandably this is also connected to the manner and the attitude toward the world and perception. But in spirituality there is no importance to this, because in spirituality the main thing is the desire! Moreover, the form of the desire has no importance. The important thing is if the desire is directed toward yourself or toward others. A desire directed toward yourself is called female and a desire directed toward others is called male.

A woman who goes out in the evening to disseminate Kabbalistic material is carrying out the work of a man, this activity is considered male. A man who sits at home, watches soccer and drinks beer is considered female in this action. But if he remains at home with a child to make it possible for the woman to be engaged in dissemination, then he is considered male, because it is the intention that determines everything. In spirituality, there are no genders; our world doesn’t exist! The spiritual world is a world of intentions!

Men And Women Are The Outcome Of Spiritual Roots

laitman_627_2Question: Why is there a division into male and female in the physical bodies in the vegetative and the animal world if there is no difference between the sexes in spirituality?

Answer: It is because our upper root is the Creator, the One who bestows, who gives, who extracts from Himself and radiates the Light, while the created being is a desire, emptiness, that wants to receive the Light and be filled by it. These two elements are what all of creation is made of, the Creator and the created being.

Therefore, in our world we are the outcomes of these two spiritual roots—the Creator and the created being. In our world a man is like the earthly embodiment of the Creator and the woman is the embodiment of the created being. But this is only a conditional differentiation in our world; we shouldn’t pay attention to it—both men and women need to attain complete equivalence of form with the Creator, and they will attain it internally in the form of the full interconnection between them.

Men And Women In The Spiritual Work

laitman_259_01Question: Why do women study separately from men?

Answer: Men and women should study separately so that they will not engage in corporeal forms of communication instead of in spirituality. The wisdom of Kabbalah doesn’t consider people to be angels, and so love and sexuality should not be mixed with spirituality. This is very important. This is the reason that men don’t study with women in a group of ten, and don’t sit together at the same table.

A group has to be made of two equal subgroups: the men’s group and the women’s group. Other than the study itself, they should help each other in preparing meals, cleaning, the maintenance of the facilities, etc.; the main thing is not to interfere in each other’s spiritual intentions. Wherever there are no spiritual intentions involved, there should be the usual mutual cooperation.

Question: Are there men and women in the world today whose level of development enables them to be in a group of ten together without interfering with each other’s spirituality?

Answer: There are many groups of ten men and many groups of ten women and each works wonderfully and advances, but it is still too early to combine them. They have to be behind a Masach (screen) above the Tzimtzum (restriction), in the attribute of bestowal, outside themselves, and this state has to be permanent. The groups should not be mixed during the spiritual work because if they are, their attention would be drawn to the sexual differences.

What Determines The Gender Of A Baby?

laitman_623Question: What determines the gender of a child to be born? How does this relate to spirituality?

Answer: It depends on the properties of the soul that are required for correction.

I don’t recommend intervening and engaging in genetic engineering to determine the gender of future children. We should not be doing that.

Anyway, you can’t fool the Creator. The gender of the child and his characteristics are determined by the general Kli (vessel) of the soul that needs to be connected into one.

“The Swedish Loneliness”

laitman_564Opinion (Micael Widell): “Sweden is famous and reputable for its social safety net which provides world class safety and physical comfort. The Swedish model of welfare is known around the world. …

“Institutions have been built to ensure that the individual is always independent. You shouldn’t have to depend on a spouse or on parents or children for your material well-being. So we built a society where you don’t need anyone else to support you. …

“Our unique material safety net takes care of us, so that we don’t have to take care of each other. And when we don’t need each other, we let go of our ties and sense of community.

“Sweden has the loneliest population on earth. Half of Swedes live alone. One fourth die alone. The documentary shows the government workers who visit homes where someone died months or even years ago without anyone noticing. …

“If we can afford to be independent from other people, it seems we take the opportunity. We don’t initiate contact with other people unless we have good reason to. The poorer the neighbourhood, the more dependent everyone is on other people, and the more social bonds between neighbours. …

“You can have material safety and wealth in a society, or you can have people who are close to each other with rich social lives and happiness as a consequence – but it seems you can’t have both at the same time.”

My Comment: That is certainly how it is; when people dream of building capitalistic individualism and then socialist individualism, they reach an individualism where nobody else matters to them. Everyone lives in isolation, everyone has everything and ultimately nothing at all.

The ego shows us a dead-end road in all its delights, in all variations. The ego “eats” itself exactly like a cancer cell that devours the body and then dies itself because it no longer has anything to feed on. The same is true of humanity on Earth, humanity is destroying it and then it will die.

Question: What does Kabbalah say about loneliness? How can one deal with it and work with it?

Answer: There is no way to do that. We can only accept the method of correction of the wisdom of Kabbalah and realize the evil of our egoistic nature that we subjugate ourselves to and obey blindly. Only then will people be able to hear, to move to another type of existence and begin to thrive. But it is only in the case that they want to hear.

A person must feel great suffering regarding what he has accomplished and how this life, despite its softness and comfort, lacks purpose, is meaningless and empty. By itself, life is death. It isn’t that it leads to death, but in its present form life itself is death!

A person must feel that he cannot remain in it, that he must leave it now! Not in 10 to 20 years, but precisely now it should be clear that he is already dying, despite his seeming well-being.

Only then will people accept the method of integral unity instead of absolute separation, rise above individualism, and leave its benefits. For this, a person must work on himself internally rather than making steel and producing cars. This is not talking about industry, but specifically about working on oneself, on the ability of a person to apply pressure to himself, and to begin to connect and to unite with others. It is not simple.

The Transformation Of A Girl To A Woman

Laitman_198Question: What is the transformation of a girl to a woman on a spiritual level?

Answer: It is very hard to explain from a Kabbalistic perspective what it means when a girl becomes a woman, which is when she loses her virginity. This is a special Masach (screen) of the attributes of NHY.

This phenomenon is characteristic only of humans. As we know, animals have no hymen. But this is not what makes a girl a woman, it is the internal independence that emerges in a girl, who then becomes a teen, and then a woman.

It is the work on herself and, of course, the desire to give birth, to have a family, to unite with her husband, to have children around her, and to care for the family nest.

On the spiritual level, it is a very serious growing process, possible only when the female part takes on the attributes of the male part and turns them into female attributes. Malchut takes the last four Sefirot from Zeir Anpin and turns them into her ten Sefirot. In any case, the relations between men and women have to be good.

But everything is fulfilled only under the influence of the Upper Light and not by us. Therefore, we should not make anything up. We should use the method of Kabbalah and be happy.

A Kabbalist’s Mission

laitman_547_03Question: What is the mission of a person who studies the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: A person who studies the wisdom of Kabbalah, and I emphasize a person and not a man, has to make sure that he perfectly corrects his part in the general system called creation or Adam (Man), in his relationships with all created beings on the levels of the still, vegetative, animate, and the speaking nature, and through them, his relations with the Creator.

If this is what he does, he is called man, Adam, who resembles the Creator no matter whether it is a man or woman in our world. In our world, a man can do much more intensive work than a woman because he has a bigger ego and a lesser yearning for the Creator.

“Therefore Shall A Man Leave His Father And His Mother, And Shall Cleave Unto His Wife”

laitman_745_02Question: What is the meaning of the verse, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24)?

Answer: A mother symbolizes the female desire, the desire to receive, which is a deficiency of spirituality. And his wife symbolizes the next level of this desire. Later, a male becomes detached from his mother, like a little child, and adheres to a greater desire, which is called his wife. Therefore it is said, “in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice” (Genesis 21:12).

Physical And Spiritual Life

Laitman_506_5Question: As a result of my study of the wisdom of Kabbalah, I am losing interest in my husband more and more because he doesn’t understand this study at all. How should I relate to him so as not to destroy the marriage and maintain mutual respect and love?

Answer: Do not confuse physical life with spiritual life. They have different goals. Physical life is a responsibility to continue the generation and educate children, and couples can respect each other and help each other with this. Interest and love don’t last long, as psychologists claim, but responsibility and love resulting from support and children are eternal.

Love appears as a result of mutual concessions and assistance, and is not at first sight. It is a result of life and not its beginning.
