The Commandment: “Thou Shalt Not Steal”

Dr. Michael LaitmanWhen a person works with the intention for others, “Love thy neighbor,” and so forth and suddenly takes a little break while he works and takes a little for himself—which means that he begins to receive for himself—it is called stealing.

This, of course, is different in our world since we are on a level that is lower than the moral, spiritual level. On the whole, all the commandments in the Torah have nothing to do with the corporeal world. However, people began to use them with regard to their family, social, and human life.

Question: Can we call this time the time of preparation since a person goes through a certain process when he turns the “barbaric world” into a world of laws?

Answer: However, this doesn’t mean that he gets closer to the spiritual world. The level of preparation is a level for attaining spirituality. We, however, see that these laws are not part of any level that precedes spirituality. On the contrary, the world begins to feel that it is civilized, liberal, and advanced.

Question: Can we attribute all that to adultery?

Answer: Not completely. Adultery in spirituality refers to mistakes that people make over and over again since, to the extent that a person wants to keep all the Ten Commandments, he constantly discovers that he breaks them over and over again.

However, all these sins are revealed when you are shown a more accurate picture, a more delicate and deeper picture, and only then does it become clear that you didn’t really think, that you didn’t suppose and allow it, that you didn’t try hard enough. So, the whole Torah speaks only about mistakes and, at the same time, about how to correct them. Without the revelations of the mistakes, there are no corrections.

The Lack Of A Good Example Is A Bad Example

Dr. Michael LaitmanWe have to constantly see before us the good example of the friends who show us an example of greater power and greater dedication. When I look at a weak friend, even if he is on the same path I am, I also grow weak. We have to agree that we work together and empower one another.

Just seeing weak people, even in our society, causes us harm since it weakens us by setting a bad example. I look at the friend and I also begin to think that I can study less and not come to the lesson every day.

So I have to see a burning fire in everyone. The society must demand this from every member. No one can just remain on the side and study quietly in the corner. He has to set an example for others. I have to feel that I receive vibes of yearning for the goal from everyone, how new daily changes occur in them with regard to the Creator and the environment, so that I will feel as if I lag behind the others who are advancing quickly and will be drawn by them, and so that I will envy their success egoistically and will not be able to calm down. But if they don’t provide me with all this, I don’t need such a society.

“Thou Shall Not Take The Name Of The Lord Thy God In Vain”

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Exodus 20:7: Thou shall not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

“Thou shall not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain…” is an action performed by a person. “For the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain,” is the response of the upper force to a person’s action.

“Thou shall not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain…” means that you cannot draw the Creator’s force in order to perform certain egoistic actions since the Creator is the force of absolute bestowal, the attribute of bestowal. You cannot ask, demand, or use it for egoistic purposes in any way. It will lead to nothing since such actions draws you away from the Creator, and this is the punishment.

If the Creator is the perfect absolute, it’s impossible to influence Him in any way! You can use Him only in order to correct yourself or to draw away from correction. This is what all the commandments actually relate to. The first Ten Commandments are the main ones since a person is made of ten main attributes.

The first attribute, “there is none else besides Him,” belongs to the Sefira of Keter (head), which is seemingly ideological and detached from all the rest. You don’t see, hear, know, or feel Him. You cannot use Him in any way!

The second attribute is not to draw Him for egoistic purposes, and it belongs to the attribute of Hochma. There is a kind of delegation of authority here, a kind of revelation of the Creator that a person can use. But be careful, since if you use this Light without the right preparation, you can receive it inside you and it can lead to a shattering. This will draw you away from the Creator! The Light of Hochma will throw you backwards.

However, if you use the Light of Hochma correctly, which means for the correction of your desires and not in vain, it will clarify and analyze everything correctly: You will know who you are and be able to continue working correctly.

So, you should pay attention to which direction you are operating. The Creator doesn’t forgive our mistakes, and a wrong action leads to an undesirable outcome.

“Remember The Sabbath Day”

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Exodus 20:8 – 20:11: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work; thou nor thy son, not thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, not thy cattle, not thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

A person who wants to advance towards spirituality must keep this condition since the Torah speaks not about corporeal but about spiritual days. The point is that we have to correct ourselves in order to more closely resemble the special spiritual form called Zeir Anpin. It’s made of six parts, and we call its replica the six days of the week.

It isn’t about working in a plant or in an office; it isn’t even considered work at all. Soon we will not work physically at all and our work will actually be in attaining the spiritual levels.

This means that on the first work day I will resemble the first Sefira, Hesed. On the second day I will resemble the second Sefira, and so on. These are not corporeal days, not the 24 hours of the day, and not the rotation of the earth around its axis.

By working on myself I correct my general desire: I rank it according to the seven parts and correct it accordingly so that it takes on the form of Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzah, Hod, and Yesod. I don’t correct the seventh part of my desire.

All my desires that are corrected during the six days are accumulated and fill me on the seventh level called Malchut. This level does not belong to the six days of my work of correction; it’s a kind of gift from Above, an addition to the six days.

We should say that the division into seven days does not exist in our world at all from the astrological point of view. There is a month, a year, the rotation of the moon, the rotation of the earth, the rotation of the sun, but there is no such thing as a week. A full rotation of the earth around its axis is a “day.” A “month” is the rotation of the moon around the earth, and a “year” is the rotation of the earth around the sun, etc.

Besides, there are holidays called “a new month,” a “new year,” and so on. A holiday of a new month, meaning the beginning of the month, is clear since there is a new moon, when the earth doesn’t hide it completely anymore, but gradually reveals it. The moon seems to grow gradually and it’s an astronomical sign. You look at the sky, you see it, and you can measure everything according to it. If you live in Jerusalem, you measure it in relation to Jerusalem, etc. depending on your longitude.

But a week is only a spiritual concept. No one used to keep it, no one ever celebrated it. It actually originated in the group of Abraham, whose members began to direct themselves towards the spiritual forces that way.

It doesn’t belong only to Jerusalem. It’s celebrated on any longitude where you are. If I celebrate Sabbath in Jerusalem now, my friend in Mexico doesn’t celebrate it, and for him it is still a workday. This sign doesn’t exist in our world.

What does it indicate? If a person performs spiritual work and corrects the six parts inside him, the six Sefirot of his soulHesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzah, Hod, and Yesod—he reaches a state when they all connect since Yesod is the connecting part. All this enters the seventh day of the week, Malchut.

This spiritual state has nothing to do with the weekdays of the calendar. It can last for a moment or ten minutes, it makes no difference as time doesn’t matter. On that day, which means in that spiritual state, a person mustn’t do anything since he has to receive the result of the so called work week, of the six stages of correction, inside him. As a result of this alternating work on the six parts of correction with the seventh part and their connection, a person reaches the end of correction, when all his soul is totally corrected.

Love That Shatters The “Stony Heart”

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What can I give the Creator?

Answer: You felt a certain unpleasantness by receiving in the world of Ein Sof (Infinity) and you stopped and said to yourself that you don’t want to receive anymore. In the world of the shattering, the world of Nekudim, you were shattered since you couldn’t receive in order to bestow. We know from TES that the upper Partzufim made an intentional mistake in the calculations. But why were you shattered? It is because you discovered a love that you couldn’t receive in order to bestow, that you could not return!

The filling itself is not important, not the five servings that the host serves you. The five servings already appear in the world of Adam Kadmon, and it’s clear to you whether you can receive them or not. Everything is clear with regard to the servings, but now you discover that the host has a special attitude towards you, that He loves you! And you cannot stand this attitude and it shatters you.

Love shatters in the most severe manner, since you have nothing to return, there is nothing you can do. So a person that is dedicated to someone, like a wife to her husband, totally buys him. If she shows him that she is ready to do everything for him, he cannot reject her, it is unconditional love.

It’s impossible to resist such love that is revealed in the shattering of the vessels; the created being cannot pay for it, he has nothing to complete it by. So as a result of the shattering, we finally begin to search and we find out what we can give in return to the love of the upper.

As a result we understand what the “two great Lights” are: Malchut and Zeir Anpin, the created being and the Creator that become one: “I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me.”

Question: Can’t I pay for this love just by my dedication, appreciation, admiration, and the recognition of His greatness?

Answer: No, because you have no other parameter but your desire, you cannot measure love and you don’t know what love is. You know what love is only by your own vessel.

You think that expressing your love towards the Creator is repaying Him several kilograms of desire with a Masach (screen), but love is typical only of the Creator. If you measure and calculate this, then thanks to the connection between you, the Light of His love fills the two of you. This means that “you are covered by one blanket.” The Light of love comes from the Creator and wraps the two of you since you both reach adhesion; since mutual love is called adhesion, you have the common vessels that are filled by the common Light thanks to the common Masach.

Shame That Keeps Us From Going Back

We Should Take The Initiative

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: The wisdom of Kabbalah has used four languages throughout history: the language of the Bible, the language of Halacha (Jewish Law), the language of the Haggadah, and the language of Kabbalah. Can we say that the language of integral education is the fifth new language that we use in order to communicate with the world?

Answer: No. It’s more like the language of Kabbalah, adapted for “babies.”  It’s because we speak to people about love, connection, submission, about the collective force of bestowal that is revealed in the connection between us. This force is revealed from a higher level and dwells among us just like wisdom for the masses. We explain the psychology of integral education using today’s terminology behind which there is no other but the wisdom of Kabbalah: the Sefirot, Partzufim, the worlds, ascents and descents, mutual connection, Reshimot (reminiscences), etc.

Question: If in the past it used to be enough for me to study the wisdom of Kabbalah and to connect with the friends and the group, do I also have to study this style of Kabbalistic language today?

Answer: Yes. It is the uniqueness of integral education. Similarly, we explain to children and adults the same things in different ways. The connection with the world goes through a different level of communication and we have to learn it.

It’s the Light that Reforms that corrects everyone. It doesn’t come to the masses if we don’t participate in the process. If the world starts connecting independently, it will speed up the pace of advancing along the path of suffering.

For example, if Europe begins to strengthen the union that it needs so badly today, it will lead to Nazi regimes, and local communes that abuse others. But if we work on the unity of Europe, then it will take on a spiritual form, according to the rule of “love thy friend as thyself.” Therefore, we mustn’t give the world time to start the egoistic connection. Only if we initiate the process of connection among them will it lead to a positive result.

Question: How can we do that?

Answer: By using the media, through our groups, and mainly through the general network that connects all of us “below the surface.” Through it, we will influence people and they will begin to understand that we have the right method of correction and no one else.

In fact, accepting integral education is the criterion that a person is ready to be corrected. This is the fulfillment of the wisdom of Kabbalah, as it says in the articles “Matan Torah” (The Giving of the Torah) and “The Arvut” (Mutual Guarantee). So our role is to become teachers, a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation” with regards to the nations of the world. This is actually the field where we perform our external actions—”a field blessed by the Creator.”

The Darkness Of Egypt Before The Dawn

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What characterizes the peak of exile from which we reach redemption?

Answer: First of all, the exile begins when we feel that the evil inclination disturbs us from connection. I yearn for the Creator and therefore I yearn for connection, but my nature is standing in the way and blocks it and so it doesn’t let me go forward. This is what actually happened among the sons of Jacob at that time.

And at the peak of the exile we see that Pharaoh wins, and so we find ourselves in the “Egyptian darkness,” under the enormous dominance of the “angel of death,” which leaves no hope. We are so eager to connect understanding that our entire life depends only on this, and simultaneously we see that it’s impossible.

And precisely from within this darkness the command is heard: “Leave.” And so the possibility of salvation is revealed to us. In a state of absolute powerlessness when there is no chance of salvation, when everyone is in despair, hopeless, only the Creator with His glory and by Himself and nothing else except that higher power brings us out to the light.

Lawful Forgiveness

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “The Love of the Creator and the Love of the Created Beings”: Thus, each and every Mitzvah that one performs affects the whole world. It is like a person who weighs seeds on a scale. Just like each and every seed one puts on the scale induces the final desired decision, so each Mitzvah that the individual performs before the whole earth is full of the knowledge develops the world in that direction.

It is said, “But one sinner destroyeth much good.” It means that one’s sinning reduces the weight on the scale, as though that person took back the beans he had put on the scale. By that one turns the world backwards.

Question: I don’t understand how we can reach the general correction if every wrong action that anyone might do may ruin everything.

Answer: There is concealment from the top down as the system of the worlds extends, which means the system of concealment. It operates so that even if we, who are beginners, commit great sins below, it doesn’t count as sins.

Just as a baby is forgiven when he breaks something since there is nothing we can do. But when he grows up we have certain demands and even greater demands of an older person, although he can also be forgiven the first time.

So we are operated upon and operate only according to our current level, and its according to this level that the benefit or harm that we bring society is determined. This is the system of concealment, the “spiritual jurisdiction,” that decreases the influence of the upper Light and builds a kind of a cone where the lower point stands for the minimal demands, on the verge of “forgiveness,” and as we rise the demands increasingly expand.

Still, you must know that in your current state, you influence all of reality. A person is a whole world, but it’s not at the expense of others and each one discovers his whole world inside him.

Spirit Which Transcends The Body

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: In the next stage of development of humanity, it will be more sensitive. There are a number of trends that confirm this. First, the children of today are much more sensitive to receiving information. Second, we see that today on television there are dozens of entertainment programs on which psychics and many other people with more subtle sensitivities appear with a clarity that is unknown to us.

One gets the impression that humanity is changing internally if not externally then at the level of the organization of the biological body or its method of processing information. Does some kind of law exist here?

Answer: All of these problems began to appear hundreds of thousands of years ago at the time of transition from the ape to the human. We came down from the trees, gradually stopped hunting, began to be involved with farming, passed through a system of slavery, started to establish cities and civilizations, to print money, invent writing, and so forth. All this helped in human development.

So, in our day, a need is appearing in humanity to feel the guiding power that will give us the possibility of discovering why we are living, the ability to feel its purpose, and to attain this while we are still alive in this world and not just in the next world as religion would tell us. We need to attain the next higher state, regardless of whether the body lives or dies. While being in the physical body, it is as if we are actually found outside of it, next to it, only identifying ourselves with the body.

With the help of the special lessons of integral learning that help a person to develop connections—how “to go outside of oneself,” to feel the other, to live within him, to love him, to be integrated with him—with this, a person develops the technology for psychological emergence from himself.

In addition, when he begins to realize this, he sees that he is not a body but rather a spirit, desire and intellect, which doesn’t exist within a body. The body is merely their temporary carrier, but this carrier can convey all its information wherever it wants, from one bearer to another, from one computer to another computer.

When a person begins to understand that he can “transfer himself,” then a sensation of freedom appears in him. So, from this, he can solve completely different problems.

You Don’t Buy Spirituality Nor Take It By Force

Dr. Michael LaitmanRabash,” According to What is Explained Concerning: “Love Thy Friend as Thyself”: If everyone is nullified before his friend and mingles with him, they become one mass where all the little parts that want the love of others unite in a collective force that consists of many parts. And when one has great strength, he can execute the love of others.

And then he can achieve the love of God. But the condition is that each will annul before the other. However, when he is separated from his friend, he cannot receive the share he should receive from his friend.

Thus, everyone should say that he is nothing compared to his friend. It is like writing numbers: If you first write “1” and then “0,” it is ten times more. And when you write “00” it is a hundred times more. In other words, if his friend is number one, and the zero follows it, it is considered that one receives from his friend ten (10) times more. And if he says that he is double zero compared to his friend, he receives from his friend a hundred (100) times more.

However, if it is to the contrary, and he says that his friend is zero and he is one, then he is ten times less than his friend 0.1. And if he can say that he is one and he has two friends who are both zeros compared to him, then he is considered a hundred times less than them, meaning he is 0.01. Thus, his degree lessens according to the number of zeros he has from his friends.

If I want to receive something from someone in our world, I have to pay for it in return or to take it by force like the big takes from the small. In this case the bigger I am, the more I can extort the other and receive more from him. That’s the way it is in the corporeal world, when we speak about receiving in the desire to receive.

But if it’s about receiving spiritual powers, it works according to an opposite law. The more important I consider my friend and the greater I see the friend, the more I can receive from him.

I cannot receive anything from someone who is equal to me since he is on the same level as I am. But if he is even a little bit higher than me, I can already receive something from him, and the more I raise him the more I can receive.

It has nothing to do with the friend himself but only with how I treat him with regard to me. It’s just like the students of Rabbi Yossi Ben Kisma who had no idea how their teacher worked with regard to them. He saw himself as relatively smaller than his students and so he received spiritual powers through them.

Everything depends on how great your friend is in your eyes. The greater he is, the more I can receive the force of bestowal from him. But if it’s about receiving egoistic powers, then it’s about a different principle according to which the greater I am the more I can extort the other in order to fill my ego.

So the spiritual power you will receive from the environment is only up to you whether it’s 1000 or 0.001. We have to be in a group of ten that is working on connection and in which each one is somehow connected to the desire to bestow like the students of Rabbi Yossi Ben Kisma. But this is enough since everything else depends on you and the extent to which you subdue yourself!

You will never have the power to advance if you don’t receive powers from the environment. So the rule of subduing yourself before the friends, even by physical actions is the most efficient means to advance. We mustn’t think that Kabbalists tell us about this only to establish good relations the way we teach kids in our world to behave morally since this approach is opposite from the wisdom of Kabbalah.

We do this only in order to receive the force of bestowal from the Light, from the Creator, through others. Since I subdue myself, the Light can flow into me through the friend. If I treat others as if they are really greater than I am, I will receive the power of bestowal through them. It’s enough to treat them with the intention of in order to bestow and in the relations between us I will begin to feel the Creator and will be able to bring Him contentment. Through the bestowal upon the friends, I will be able to feel how I can reach bestowal upon the Creator. He will be revealed to me through the image of the group that I will see in the Light of my bestowal. Thus the rule “love thy friend as thyself” is the main goal of our work, which is a constant feeling of humility towards the friends, and accordingly we build up the powers of bestowal.
