The Light From The Center Of The Group

laitman_528_04Question: I don’t understand how I can connect with others if I don’t understand what this is. I can’t find any means for this within me.

Answer: You don’t have any means, but you have a teacher who tells you what you should pay attention to, and it is up to you to carry this out because the teacher knows that now it is time.

If it were not for the teacher, you would never reach this. So two levels exist, and there must always be a higher level that directs you upward. From your level, you cannot know where “north” is.

It is time for us to speak more about connection, and from day to day this is discovered more clearly. Some kind of thought about correction cannot appear in your mind unless you are a special soul, like the Ari or Moses, with a special role.

Question: So what depends on me?

Answer: How you make the efforts regarding connection depends on you. You don’t understand what this is, but you don’t need to understand. You need to carry it out, and the heart will be drawn after the deed.

Question: But I have carried out all kinds of actions and I thought that they were directed toward connection.

Answer: You didn’t think that you were carrying them out for the sake of connection with the group, to discover the Creator within this connection and to give Him satisfaction. You need to think about this more now.

We must understand that the spiritual world is revealed in the mutual connection between us called Arvut (Mutual Guarantee). This connection must move through all the stages: bestowing in order to bestow so at least that which you hate you do not do to your friend, and after that to receiving in order to bestow, that is, loving your neighbor as yourself, until the completion of correction.

All the commandments strengthen the connection between us, and the Torah is the Light that Reforms that illuminates our efforts and implements this connection. It is up to us only to ask that the Ohr Makif (Surrounding Light) will influence and correct us.

But first we need to make joint efforts to feel what to ask for in order to discover the deficiency and a request for Light that will correct the characteristics that disturb us from connecting. To the degree that we yearn for connection, playing and speaking about this in front of everyone,  and making efforts, then the Ohr Makif will begin to influence us.

This doesn’t depend upon the merit of our intentions. Even if our intentions are the most egoistic, like those of Pharaoh, the Light will illuminate us from a distance. According to the nature of the Light, it illuminates through the center of the group. If you don’t make an effort to connect with others, you will not receive the Ohr Makif.

After all, the Ohr Makif is the Ohr Pnimi (Inner Light) that is supposed to be discovered; it is the Creator. The difference between them is only the degree of revelation. The Light of Infinity is concealed behind each and every level until it is absolutely hidden. We are in a state where it is absolutely concealed from us. But actually we are in the world of Infinity; its is concealed from our senses.

The Redemption Of The Shechina From Exile

laitman_942The goal of creation is to do good to the created beings, which means to enable the created beings to reach the level of the Creator. There cannot be a greater or a smaller gift than this—the desire to receive must be equal to the Light, to the desire to bestow.

The whole process of the evolution of the desire takes place in the desire itself, in its understanding, in its attainment and in its impressions. There are no physical changes; all the changes are in the inner impressions of the desire to receive compared to the Light. But the created being feels these changes as moving from place to place or in time and discerns the changes inside and around him.

Although the created being can see a totally opposite picture at any given moment and think that he is moving from one world to another, from one level to the next, all that takes place only in his internal attributes. It is hard to understand at the moment because we have not undergone any changes that take us from one world to another or from one level to the next yet. The process that the desire to receive undergoes is a process of clarification and correction that is fulfilled by the efforts that the desire makes. Thus the created being builds his vessel. If the process continues naturally without an effort, it is called the level of still, vegetative, and animate nature that are managed by the Light.

But if the created being makes an effort before the Light affects him, it is as if he manages the Light himself and thus expresses his freewill, his independence. Therefore, of everything we go through, it is only what we have done by our efforts according to our decision in the short spans of freewill that we were given that is taken into account.

This is all we are required to do. But wherever we can grow stronger in order to reach an equivalence of form with the Light, we can fulfill our freewill. We are in a special state, surrounded by lots of people, and we have a chance to perform corporeal actions instead of spiritual actions for the time being.

These actions are not in order to bestow for the time being but are actually egoistic, but through them we express our desire to reach bestowal, mutual guarantee, mutual help, support, and connection. Thus, we show that we want to reach an equivalence of form with the Creator and reach the level of a human being.

The connection between us is called Shechina, the place for the revelation of the Creator. We wish to build a network of connections between us, of mutual help, support, and unity until eventually the network will be so tight and full that it will become a vessel, a volume in which the attribute of mutual love and bestowal can be revealed. Our vessel will contain the Light to the extent that we make an effort to resemble true bestowal.

If our efforts are not true yet and not aimed at true bestowal but for our own benefit, the Light cannot be revealed in the vessel and it illuminates above us in the form of the Surrounding Light. It is actually inside us, but we see its illumination from a distance since we cannot use it correctly yet.

Thanks to the Light that surrounds us, we gradually correct our desires to such an extent that they can already have true intentions to bestow on a certain level of the 613 desires, which means to connect for the general sake and not for our private benefit as each one thought previously. Then the Light is gradually revealed to the extent that we are equivalent in form to the Light. Then the general vessel is called Shechina, the Light inside it that is called the Shochen (the dweller) and the revelation of the Light is called “redemption.” The Light is revealed inside the vessel.

In the meantime, our vessel cannot receive the Light, which means that its components (the friends) are not connected in bestowal and mutual guarantee but yearn to reach that, a state that is called “exile.” Exile can be on different levels in different states. Increasing the yearning and the desire for the Light determines the sorrow we feel about being in exile. If our sorrow isn’t egoistic but because we cannot reach connection in order to delight the Creator, the source of Light, it invokes the action of the Surrounding Light, which corrects us and gives us the power to connect and raises us to the level of the Shechina. Thus we leave the exile and connect with the Creator.

These states change: exile-redemption and then again exile-redemption. Today we are at the end of the last exile, on the verge of the last redemption. The laws of correlation between the Lights and the vessels have brought us to the end of this process, to the last action. Let’s hope that we will feel that the Shechina is in exile and as a result reach redemption!

Search For The Creator Within The Creatures

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why did the Creator create a system of worlds of Tuma’a (impurity) against the system of the worlds of Kedusha (sanctity)?

Answer: The desire to receive was created because the creation can be only something that is outside of the Creator. The Creator has only the properties of bestowal, love, and everything good. There is nothing more in the Creator, and this property dominates and fills all of reality. The entire creation is filled with this kind of energy.

Therefore, the opposite property should be the black energy that receives and attracts the Light into it and only feels what is found inside it. The desire to bestow is 100% feeling the other. We don’t understand this. The Creator is a property that doesn’t feel itself and only feels others.

Man sees himself as a person: There is myself and what I feel, what I do. But for the Creator there isn’t any of this. So He has no image, only the property of bestowal, meaning, the feeling of others. He feels Himself as being found in the other. So there is no Creator without a creature. The Creator is the characteristic of love that is discovered outside of Him. He is in all of us, and it seems that He wouldn’t exist by Himself.

Now it is necessary to build a characteristic that is His opposite. It follows that the creature must be someone who feels itself and not the other, not the others. This feeling of oneself is called the “desire to receive for oneself,” and so this is the creature.

The desire to receive feels only itself and doesn’t feel the others in any way. In this state, this desire is very limited. Even when the Creator fills it 100%, his pleasure will be very small, for this is the feeling of his separateness, detachment, from that force called the Creator.

In this state the desire to receive is detached from feeling the other, from bestowal, and it cannot understand how wonderful this is. And it only enjoys feeling itself. This is called a “Nitzotz (spark)” of life.

To bring the desire to receive to the feeling of wholeness, like the Creator, we need to add to it a possibility of being able to work in bestowal, even though it only feels what happens in itself. Because it doesn’t feel the other, from its point of view, the other doesn’t exist.

In fact, we don’t see anything. We think that the world is what we see around us. But we don’t see the worlds, this entire space called the spiritual world because we have no possibility of feeling the other.

To save the creatures from this terrible separation, Tzimtzum Aleph (the First Restriction) was made, a Masach (screen), and Ohr Hozer (Returning Light) were created.

Question: What will happen to me when I acquire the power of bestowal? Will I also disappear?

Answer: You won’t even have any question about this. Even if you disappear completely, this will not concern you. Someone who thinks about himself is detached from the Creator, because the Creator doesn’t have such thoughts.

What Distinguishes The Family Of The Future?

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the ultimate force of nature, which will operate in the future family? Is it related to religion?

Answer: It is not about religion, but about the fact that we are all connected to each other above our egoism. It is written that the Shechina (divine presence) abides between a husband and wife.

The future of the family lies in the action of the upper force of nature upon it, the force of love, unity, and mutual bestowal. In such a family we will be connected by the ties that are above our animal level.

Due to the family, a person will have more than a warm and cozy family nest where one feels safe and receives help in case of illness and old age. We will build a network of relationships between us, inside of which we will reveal the force of bestowal and love that exists above our nature.

Question: Why are there families which seemingly enjoy full material prosperity, but feel they that they lack family warmth?

Answer: It is for this reason that people divorce. They feel a void that cannot be filled by anything. The family does not have what I want. And what I want, I do not know.

People feel that they need a new form of family ties, but do not know where to look for or how to find them. And thus they get divorced.

The family of the future will have a new connection that leads a married couple to a higher purpose for which it is worthwhile living together. Indeed, if not for this, then what is the point of having a family?

You can buy prepared food in a supermarket, do your laundry in an automatic washing machine, so you can invite a woman over for an evening. Children can be visited once a week, and indeed, we do not see them often because we work so much. What benefits does the family add to our fully arranged, comfortable life?

Question: What is missing in today’s family?

Answer: The family lacks a higher purpose other than conventional, material animal wellbeing. We are required to reveal the human degree in our family in order to discover the Shechina between us, to reveal the upper force, and to have an eternal and perfect life. And it really can be achieved through connection within the family, with other families, and eventually with the whole world.

The upper force is the force of love and bestowal. It is called “upper” because it is above us, above the egoists, who are opposite to it, love only themselves, and do not love others.

Question: What will we feel in the future family that we do not have today?

Answer: We will feel a life without any restrictions and one filled will all flavors. We will need the whole world. Our family will be in such a connection with the other families that we feel confident, joyful, restricted by nothing. Children will grow up in this atmosphere and will be brought up according to it. We must come to this.

Asking For The Light Of Faith

laitman_239Question: Why on Passover is the Light revealed with mercy more than judgment?

Answer: That is how the higher system is arranged. It is impossible to act on me now with the force of judgment if I have no strength. What could it do with me in such a case? Bury me even more? This already happened in all the previous actions.

Now, I ask for the Light of mercy, the Light of faith, meaning the power to rise above my egoism and perform acts of bestowal, or at least not be in slavery, not to be buried under the desire to receive.

All of this can be checked only according to the thoughts and actions toward society. Only according to this can I examine and evaluate whether I have gone out from Egypt a bit or not.

Resembling The Light

laitman_936The Zohar, “Pekudei,” Part 1: These are the accounts of the Tabernacle. It says that all the rivers run to the ocean and the ocean is never full. All the rivers are rivers and holy springs, the Sefirot of ZA, which were filled and came out to illuminate and to fill the big ocean, which is Malchut. And because the big ocean is filled by these rivers, it waters all the field animals, as it says, and they shall water all the field animals which are the levels of BYA.

Question: Why does the section Pekudei, begin with the worlds “these are the accounts…?”

Answer: Where else can you be counted if not in Malchut, which means in the desire that should be corrected and raised, and that you should work with? It is only after you discover the one general desire that you can see how it was shattered as a result of man’s sin that brought about the division and splitting of the one desire, which means that it led to the evolution of humanity. Only then is it possible to understand how humanity is gradually corrected even though it currently exists in the form of separate bodies, separated desires that have to be connected in order to be as one man in one heart and return to their source.

Therefore, there are clear instructions in the Torah as to how we should reach this state. The connection is fulfilled with the help of the Upper Light that created the general desire and provides it with energy and the plan of its evolution.

We see how everything develops in the world, but we don’t know where it all stems from, where the source of energy for this development is, and what its plan is. We simply exist in it and unlike the still, vegetative, and animate levels of nature, we can look at ourselves from the side, look at nature around us and see that it all develops in a certain direction.

“All the rivers flow to the sea,” these are rivers of Light that flow through the world of Atzilut and gradually correct the parts of Malchut and bring us to connection.

Part of our corporeal desires, called the animals of the field, are nourished by the Upper Light and this is how we develop. Everything we have built on this planet is the result of the evolution of our unconscious, corporeal, egoistic (for the time being) desire.

There are different theories and sciences that attempt to understand the process of our evolution, but in the end they contribute nothing and have no effect on the general evolution.

Their attempts to impose a certain ideology in an artificial manner lead to nothing as we saw in the USSR, Cuba, China and other tyrannies that implemented approaches that contradict natural evolution. Eventually they had to give up their principles, ideologies, and plans that were allegedly correct, and they returned to the normal egoistic perception that nature leads us along.

Question: But aren’t all the communist regimes based on a certain feeling of connection?

Answer: Of course, the communist regimes are the oldest type of regimes; in primitive society everything was collective, so we can call it communist. It is not a new idea.

The era of opportunism followed the era of Marx’s ideas and unfortunately distorted his ideas. Instead of educating people to cooperate and directing them to general acceptance and equality, because the advanced movement actually depends on education and knowledge, many societies began establishing forceful tyrannies that eventually were opposite to nature.

According to the wisdom of Kabbalah we learn how the rivers, which means the Light, enter Malchut of Atzilut. Only a small part, the upper part of Malchut, which is Keter, enters the world of Atzilut and all the other nine Sefirot of Malchut are in the worlds of Beria, Yetzira, and Assiya. Our world is the last level of the world of Asiya.

The rivers of Light affect our ego, develop it, and force each of us to recognize our lowliness and the lowliness of the egoistic society that we are building. How can we change that and raise the worlds of Beria, Yetzira, and Assiya, including our world, which is the lowest of the worlds, to the world of Atzilut? After all, the inclination of human evolution should be aimed only at that.

The Torah gives us the instructions for the right solution to this problem, which is to reach an equivalence of form with the Light! But we don’t want to do that because the Light shows us that we have to give up our egoism and start working above it, connecting to one another because the world of Atzilut is the world of absolute connection between all the separate forces and inclinations.

“Atzilut” stems from the Hebrew word “Etzlo” -“in Him,” which means a corrected desire in which the full attribute of the Light is revealed.

This means that we have to try to be part of the current that directs us to Malchut of Atzilut despite all the diversions from the major inclination. Humanity begins to realize that there is no other way and that there is an accurate plan according to which we must advance, otherwise we are will be facing the threat of annihilation.

A Working Engine In A Broken Machine

laitman_934Question: How must I look at the group if I imagine that everything in the world is a desire to receive?

Answer: The group are the desires that belong to you that you can use to be strengthened through the help of their power. It is necessary to relate to these foreign desires as your desires as if they were corrected and connected to you.

You must relate to the group as a tool that is in final correction with love, commonality, joy, and great appreciation—that you have received a tremendous auxiliary power. Within your general desire, they gave you one corrected part. The entire world is a gigantic system in which everything has been “sold out.” Everything is false, and suddenly, within the damaged system, you find one corrected and whole part that is in adhesion with the Creator. It functions ideally, and with its help you can correct all the rest of the parts like in a machine.

Other than this, you discover that this part is the main one within the system. This is the engine, and, after this part, you discover additional corrected parts, Kabbalists from the past who already were corrected within your spiritual system. In other words, you have an anchor.

If you enter into the corrected system called a “group” and are included in it, then you correct and calibrate yourself relative to all the rest of the parts within the system. With its help, you build yourself. The group becomes a home for you in which you escape from the entire world. You get power from there, and then you go out to correct the entire world. This is a lifesaver you cannot do without. It makes it possible for you to check if you are advancing toward correction or toward destruction. Otherwise you don’t know. Is it possible to check this with your intellect?

You cannot do anything alone. However, within the group, you calibrate yourself. If you didn’t do this in a group, you would have no chance of doing something right or even knowing that you did something incorrectly, in what form, and what you must correct. You understand nothing.

The group that is given to you is a relatively correct system to the degree that you nullify yourself in regard to it. You get a ready-made tool that is ready for correction on condition that you are also ready for correction. The more you invest in the group, the more you get correct settings to correct the rest of the shattered desires. The group is the corrected area within your desire, and then you will begin to feel that the entire world is corrected, except for you.

Question: What is my work regarding the corrected area?

Answer: If you nullify your ego toward the friends, then you calibrate yourself “for the sake of bestowal.” With the powers, the perception, the changes that have begun in you, you go out and implement actions “in order to bestow.” Without the group, you will not be able to even move from your place. It is impossible, and with the group you are connected all day, and you calibrate yourself toward a correct perception of the world, to the right attitude in regard to all of its parts and yourself, so the day isn’t wasted.

If you come to a group once or twice a week, then, accordingly you will get an opportunity to correct yourself. Every day must begin by looking at the entire world through the group. Otherwise, you never will be able to look at reality correctly. You will not know what else to add, what to yearn for, and what to change.

laitman_942Question: If I must see the entire world in the form of desires, how should I relate to people we meet when we disseminate the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: All of these people are your desires. If you relate to a person that way, he will begin to feel that you are his relative, that you are connected to him. This leads to a connection between you that ties him to your system in a way that he doesn’t understand. Try to treat a person that way and you will see how you neutralize all the actions, thoughts, and plans that he may have against you.

Question: What does it mean to relate to others as to my own desires?

Answer: It is just as you relate to your own desires, which may be very unpleasant, cause you suffering, and you don’t like them, but you are forced to live with them. This is exactly how you should relate to other people. You perceive them as strangers in order to overcome this perception to connect with them as one man in one heart so that the physical body will not be a barrier between you.

This means that your approach should be that you want to feel others as part of you. This is exactly how we should see the world. The more you yearn for connection, the more you begin to feel help from inside you as if something changes. This is the action of the Light. You don’t feel the ray of Light, but you feel the changes. As it is written, “By Your actions we know You.” You must pray and demand that your desires should connect into one desire even though your desires are basically different.

Every part in Malchut is different from the other parts, and the shattering emphasizes this. Therefore, when the shattered parts that are detached from one another connect, they reach an intensity that is 620 times stronger. The detachment that they felt before intensifies the desire now, and so we return to the state of one man in one heart, and the intensity of the hatred between us strengthens the connection between us.

Suppose you live in New York and I live in Israel. Everything would be fine, and we would be good friends until we got closer and began to live together in one room. How difficult would it be to remain good friends now when we live together and feel the constant frictions between us?

The distance that concealed the differences between us before must become the connection between us now. This is our work. The hatred—Mt. Sinai, Pharaoh—is between us, and we turn them into a connection that is 620 times stronger than the connection we felt before.

It isn’t about the connection itself, but about knowing the Creator. The Light that penetrated the desires, like sea water that filled the valleys between mountains and created fiords, caused the detachment and the hatred. The Light has come, but we received it in order to receive and so it increased our vessels by 620 times and brought hatred and detachment with it, filling all the gaps between the desires that weren’t felt before.

The Light gives us the feeling of detachment in all our desires. I don’t agree with you in any way, and my opinion is opposite from yours regarding any matter, and it is the same with everyone else. Now, we can correct this hate. Hatred is the posterior of the Light; it isn’t a vessel. If I work with this hate and turn it into love, I discover what the Light is, its property, and what it means. This is how I discover the Creator.

The desire to receive was created in a way that cannot be changed. All of our work is with the posterior of the Light with the shattering that it has caused. When I discover my egoism, the hatred, the rejections, that belong to spirituality; I discover the posterior of the Light, its oppositeness. Instead of the Light, I discover Orta (darkness, night).

This is how I acquire the attribute of the Light by myself and become a person of the Light. The Light penetrated the desire to receive during the shattering. The Light is the same, but we feel it as darkness, detachment, and hatred.

Integrating Egoism Into A Common System
Born To Crawl In Three Axes

From Genesis To Israel

Dr. Michael LaitmanEach of the five parts of the Torah represents a totally new level in a person’s development or in the development of a group of people who want to fulfill the conditions of the Torah in order to rise to the level of the Creator.

The Torah is like a spiritual elevator that raises our properties to a new level. Those who enter it and shut the doors are ready to work on themselves against their ego. They go through five egoistic phases, which are increasingly greater in their intensity and Aviut (thickness) because egoism is crafty.

While studying each of the five parts of the Torah, the ego grows not only in quantity, but also in quality. This is a very difficult and complicated process. But at the same time, a person grows wiser and begins to understand his egoistic nature. Moreover, it penetrates the connections between all parts of nature, just as one enters a certain organization and discovers how people are connected to one another, the organization’s policies, and the ties of mutual connections between different departments etc.

In spiritual work, however, a person clarifies human nature and the nature of the soul. His advancement is on a higher level, gives greater penetration into the individual and the general connection of all the parts of the soul and all of the creation.

At the beginning, he perceives the general creation in a simple manner, like a small child. Then he is split, upgraded, and separated into parts so that by their connections and their division, a person penetrates more deeply into this system. He discovers new obstacles, new mutual connections, individual laws, etc., and so he studies and examines it from the beginning (Genesis) to the end.

He grows in the transition from one part of the Torah to another and can be told about the laws of creation and be held responsible for keeping them. There is an egoistic desire in a person to discover the Creator that occurs despite the unity with others. A certain formula has to work in it: I connect and unite with the others in order to discover the Creator in the connection between us because this is how I can fill Him with joy, just as He wants to fill me. It is in this state that I unite with Him.

When we begin to relate to our conditions correctly, different forces of help, support, and resistance appear in us. They are gradually revealed: first on the zero level of desire and then on levels one, two, three, and four, a total of five levels. There are the five books of the Torah. In these phases we move from the first word in Genesis “Bereshit” – “In the beginning” to the last word “Israel.”

Leaving The Magnetic Field Of The Ego

laitman_608_02Question: In preparing for the Passover holiday, what does “go down to the Egypt within me” mean?

Answer: To go down to Egypt means to begin to work with my desire to receive, which is basically my only material that provides me with energy. Using it, I can advance toward exiting this world and rising above the physical world.

This is the only means I have; there is nothing more than this. We are born and develop as animals. However, at some point in our lives, with all of our friends, each one of us feels that something is nipping at his heart and pulling him somewhere out of this life. He wants to know the essence of life, the source of life, where this comes from, and what is happening here on Earth.

However, we have no other substance with which it would be possible to develop this tendency, this question, only with the ego, with our desire to receive.

If I have my egoism, my desire to receive, and the one point that attracts me somewhere upward, then I can take parts of my egoistic desire and associate them with that point: on levels 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. I associate my desire to receive to that point to the degree that I am ready, and then I can go forward with this point.

I advance through this, constantly using my ego with the help of the environment that always has an influence on me and tells me that it is worthwhile to push my point in the heart toward connection with others.

There are a number of stages in working with my ego. In the beginning, I work with the group, with the environment, the lessons, and even though I want to reach bestowal, my intention is to better myself. This stage is called Lo Lishma (Not for Her name).

After that, when I received sufficient influence from the Light that Reforms, I am released from the egoistic intention to use bestowal for my own benefit. Rather, I want to bestow without any consideration of myself. I want to be in pure bestowal and be free of my ego as if I were exiting the magnetic field of the Earth.
