The Impartial Rotation Of The Wheel Of History

Dr. Michael LaitmanMicah, 7:6; Tractate Sotah 49.6: Before the advent of the Messiah …the house of gathering will be the home of debauchery, Galilee will be destroyed in wars …sages will be shamed, those afraid of sin will be despised, and there will be no truth. Righteous will not be able to get along with the falsehearted, and will be forced to retire.

Before the coming of Messiah …youngsters will be ashamed of the elders and the elderly will rise in front of the young …for a son disgraces his father; a daughter rises up against her mother; a daughter-in-law, against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the members of his household. Gradually, we are approaching this state. We sense it in all spheres of our life; in families, countries, and social structures.

People remain alone with their egoism and the interests of our friends or family members are not taken into account. The state of affairs that we currently experience is called complete darkness.

In the Tractate Sotah, it is said that “the face of the generation will be as the dog’s grin.” In other words, the face of the generation has already acquired a terrible impression of the dusk. That’s why we talk about the darkness that approaches us.

We notice it when we look at our youngsters, we also watch this process looking at ourselves and observing our own changes. We admit that we unconsciously agree with everything that happens around us without having a clue that this kind of attitude turns into a habit.

This state is completely opposite to the one that might bring us closer to the Creator. It’s only a way of demonstrating how much farther we are getting from Him.

Nonetheless, detachment from the Creator or drawing closer to Him is one and the same move, such as a wheel that rotates in a reverse motion, but still takes us forward. The same concept applies here in that I am at the point that is opposite to my goal, but I still continue advancing.

Question: What sensations do people experience when moral, social, and family values are being destroyed?

Answer: We see what’s going on with families, children, divorces, drugs, and relationships.

Big families are rare these days since solid family connections vanish. Detachment of parents from their children and vice versa is a symbol of our time. Spouses cannot live together any longer since they have nothing in common. We do everything to be independent and invent numerous technological novelties that allow us to be completely autonomous.

We think that our home is our castle. However, we cannot rely on our families, nor count on their support just because we are their parts. There is nothing like that anymore. Instead, numerous nursing homes, various hostels, and other places where people remain lonely are very widespread today.

All these are signs of the darkness that is meant to enhance our need for the Messiah’s arrival, which is the force that will pull us out of the state of detachment and bring us to unity.

Calling On The Force Of The Messiah

Dr. Michael LaitmanRabbi Judah, Treatise Yoma 10a: The son of David will not come until the wicked kingdom of Rome will have spread [its sway] over the whole world for nine months. The wicked kingdom of Rome is the force that dominates a person’s heart and mind, rejecting everything that Kabbalah says about the purpose of humanity. It throws the person to the level of our world in material concerns and goals, and he becomes immersed in the cult of the body and polytheism.

This is what happened in Rome and Greece, as they were mutually completing each other: Greece in philosophy and science, and Rome in physical strength and struggle for earthly power. Therefore, Rome and Greece, in this sense, are the opposite of Jerusalem.

The kingdom of evil actions is those countries ruled by evil, but not explicitly. Is it possible to call the United States, for example, the kingdom of evil, since it seems to be a free country?

However, at the same time, such a state seems to prevail in the personal, public, and Hollywood settings of the whole society that aim at making a person an absolute robot, brainwashed to the extent that he thinks about nothing and operates according to the canons prescribed by this environment.

We see this not only in the United States, but also in many other countries that are operating on the same principle. Just in the United States, it is seen much more clearly and vividly.

“To spread over the whole world for nine months” means to reach final maturation and birth. When it really is ready to fully grow in our world and conquer it, the force of Messiah will be manifested on the border between intrauterine and extrauterine development. It is then that it can be manifested from the opposite condition.

However, from what is happening in the world, we can conclude that we are not in this state and that we still must work hard to achieve it. In any case, we will come to it by striving forward, either in a bad way or in a good one.

We want to make our way so that humanity will avoid catastrophes, wars, disasters and crises, so that all these troubles would be solved within us in the struggle against our nature and called to the force that pulls us out of it, which is called the Messiah, the deliverer.

Therefore, we must strive only for good, and in contrast, even if we feel evil, it is not going to be real because it will be manifested only in relation to the good that we reveal. In other words, even a little bit of evil will be enough for us to realize that it cannot be worse because everything is determined in comparison.

Let’s fill the whole world with the Light, and we will then see within it, little dots of egoism (darkness). This will be sufficient for us to want to get rid of them and to appeal to the Messiah, to the force that will free us from the ego.

A Person’s Inclination Is Evil From His Youth

Laitman_167Question: At the end of his journey after having been through everything a person can go through in life, King Solomon says in the book of Ecclesiastes that ultimately everyone will listen to the Lord and will fear His commandments and will observe them since this what a person is. What did he understand at the end of his journey?

Answer: A person was created in order to fulfill the laws of nature. He has to learn how to fulfill them. The law of nature according to the Torah is simply “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

If you reach that, you attain happiness simply and unequivocally. The Creator, meaning nature, says to you: “I have created the evil inclination, I have created the Torah as a spice, for the Light in it reforms.” We need to fulfill this one and only formula and then everything will be all right.

Because all of a person’s desires are egoistic, in order to receive: “A person’s inclination is evil from his youth,” which means that he wants to receive everything for himself. Therefore, no fulfillment of these desires ever brings us happiness. A person attains happiness only if he finds in these desires the right attitude towards others and fulfills them in the form of bestowal.

This form of bestowal is called Hevel (meaning “vanity” in Hebrew) and you focus only on that. This meaning should be taken in the positive sense and not in the negative one. So “everything is Hevel Havalim (Vanity of Vanities)!” is with an exclamation mark and not with ellipsis.

I want to connect to everyone that way in order to fill their desires, and they fill my desires, thus we can mutually feed one another: I can feed you and you can feed me. But no one can ever fill himself.

Question: Let’s continue the journey. Suppose he discovered it today. Could it be that in a year he would look back and say to himself once again that happiness is not there?

Answer: When you connect with everyone, you build a society in which everyone is incorporated in one whole and everyone fills everyone else. There is no limit here. It is an infinite society like a circle. This circle never ends and the general common desire and the filling are constantly renewed.

Then we attain the state of a collective life when I exit myself and feel everyone. It is as if I am detached from this corporeal body and enter the spirit that is external to me. I live in others and this is how I feel eternal life.

Thus, I begin to feel my life in a spiritual form, virtually external to me. I enter a totally different dimension and ascend above the feeling of life, death, and time. I, thus acquire a new psychological state. This is what we should reach and it is therefore called Hevel, spirit.

The Force Of Good And The Force Of Evil, Part 1

laitman_207Question: All religions imagine the world as if its ruled by the two forces of good and evil. An ordinary person perceives the world the same way by feeling he’s being exposed to bad and good forces. What is the good force, causing all the good things, and what is the evil force that brings all the troubles?

Many people dream that in this world there is only one force of good and wonder why there is a force of evil? This duality is a constant struggle between good and evil, light and darkness, destruction and construction; it accompanies us throughout our lives. Why is there a confrontation between the force of good and the force of evil?

Answer: There is no confrontation. It’s just us that feel some forces as good and others as evil. In nature there are no good or bad forces. Indeed, there are opposing forces, the plus and the minus, attraction and repulsion, the light and the darkness.

Life is impossible without the two opposing forces, there is no metabolism in living organisms, no metabolic process, and there is no connection between subatomic particles or between space objects in the universe, uniting them into one body.

Life is always based on the confrontation between the two forces, and flows in the “middle line” that connects them both. Life appears in the subject or body in which these opposing forces interact. When they reach relative equilibrium, then the next step of the renewed life is born.

That is, the opposing forces establish a certain harmony between themselves during their encounter in the material. It turns out, the opposing subatomic forces, the electrons and protons, build the entire atoms, which join together in a molecule.

Molecules of the opposite forces already can decide between themselves what is good and what is bad for their compound. This is why they attract, assimilate, and absorb useful substances, and extract harmful ones. This is how metabolism occurs during which life survives and develops.

All of this is done at the expense of the proper alignment of two opposing forces. There is no development and life without it. Otherwise, there could be no development of our universe consisting only of inanimate matter and especially vegetative matter. The combination of the opposing forces on the vegetative level is even more complex, and on the animate level the complexity is more intricate.

There is a difficult investigation that takes place inside one’s mind and perception, the definition of good and evil on all levels. Our mind is built on the fact that we constantly analyze the struggle of opposing forces and look for the most benefit from any form of their connection.

It’s impossible to use only one force without the other, only in their interaction. That’s the way life goes.

On the still, vegetative, and animate levels the system works fine, is developing well. If sometimes we see some disasters in nature, it’s only because we evaluate their relevancy to ourselves. But in fact, the whole universe—still, vegetative, and animate worlds—are moving under the influence of positive and negative forces that interact with each other and move evolution forward.

Everything is fine until it comes to the human. These two forces of “good” and “evil,” as we call them, also affect a person. If we knew the essence of the program of nature and kept the balance of positive and negative forces, then we would live quietly and peacefully.

The problem is that a person has freedom of choice. One chooses the balance of positive and negative forces at will. This is where our initial spoiled nature manifests itself, and as a result, we make more pleasant and convenient decisions instead of the correct ones.

We are more interested in profit than in truth. This is why we begin to lay a curved path, one that isn’t in the middle between the negative and positive forces that must be equal and properly combined with each other to promote development. Instead, we are always inclined to follow a convenient way, and at the expense of others.

We are all parts of integral nature, and there we must be in total harmony with the inanimate, vegetative, and animate worlds, evolving in the same direction with them. Nevertheless, if we were to maintain a balance between the two forces by exercising the freedom of choice while keeping them in harmony, we would develop properly.

We wouldn’t allow ourselves to use the forces of nature more than we need to in order to live harmoniously with each other and the environment. Our life would be simple, but serene. We’d get what we need for our existence from nature, and we would use the rest of the forces for our own internal development.

All of the misfortunes of mankind began when humanity began to produce more goods than it needed for life. This is the turning point where humanity began to deteriorate. From this point on we’ve lost the balance of forces and started to turn them as was convenient to our egoism.

The general scheme is as follows: There is a positive force, a negative force, and we are in the middle, the people with our own egoism. If we were to use these two forces of nature in order to balance our lives and if we would implement all of the erupting egoism for our internal, spiritual growth only, then we would rise to the next level called “man.”

Our material life, that is, the life of our bodies on the animate level, with everything they need like food and family would have remained at the bottom in a balanced form, in the same state in which it should be. We would use our egoism to bring balance into the two opposing forces and rise to the spiritual level, to spiritual life.

An Unhappy Sage

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Knowledge is the highest degree that allows us to comprehend the whole of reality. This is what is expressed in Ecclesiastes by King Solomon. However, as a result, he came to the conclusion that “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow” and “the wise man shall die the same as the fool.” Why didn’t acquisition of wisdom and knowledge bring him the desired happiness?

Answer: Because wisdom and knowledge are just a way to achieve happiness. To be happy is our whole life. We do not need anything except to feel what to enjoy. Ultimately, the only thing we want is to enjoy life.

We can clothe this into various things, events, phenomena, but we want to enjoy, to fulfill ourselves. By pleasure, I mean filling ourselves with life because we have nothing except life. So, we want to feel it as fulfilling and pleasant.

What does it mean that a person lives? He has a spirit that either oppresses him or makes him happy. I want this spirit to be filled with vitality. As we have said, I always need to renew myself in order to do this. Thus, when I want wealth, power, knowledge, or even lesser things, such as a family, sex, or food, it is only in order to receive pleasure.

If you remove the enjoyment of food, a person eats because he has to only to support the body, much like a person who is sick. If he does not receive pleasure from sex, he gets treatment, since otherwise he does not feel any pleasure from life. If there is no joy in the family, he gets divorced.

The same applies to wealth, where we look at our environment and hope to gain independence and security. And now we see that at any moment, everything can be lost. Power today is too transient and not the way it was in the past when there were kings.

Finally, you reach wisdom and see everything what happens. What did you discover? Looking at all the sources of enjoyment, you see that they contain nothing, just as wisdom itself. What have you achieved by comprehending all of creation, which you can see from edge to edge? Everything functions and everything is empty.

And then you find yourself at a dead end and you literally hit the wall, because there is no place further to go. If you are a wise man, if you see the consequences of your every action and every task, you do not start it. You have nothing to do. What remains is only to commit suicide.

Today, we talk about science as of the revelation of the entire world. It implies that you are not just a scholar who studies bugs, either live or electronic, but a great philosopher, a sage. And that is completely different wisdom.

Two Forces That Create A Human Being

laitman_232_08In general, our developmental process is about expansion and consolidation (“breathing”) that combines both forces. They oppose each other and at the same time preserve mutual harmony.

The same natural mechanism can be applied to human relationships. We too feel detachment and closeness, cooling down and burning.

Thus, we go through the same developmental forms as the universe. The difference is that we are at a higher level of consciousness. It is obvious that we cannot “devote ourselves” only to one of these major forces since we won’t survive by only inhaling or only exhaling.

Life is a contrast of opposites. If everything is good and wonderful, if sweetness is not punctuated by at least a drop of spice or bitterness, we lose the sense of taste and fail to find the essence in life. It is an unbearable condition.

Only a combination of both forces (positive and negative) gives us a correct sensation and then a spark of life surfaces between them. Otherwise, everything vanishes, dissolves in monotony.

Question: How do both forces, the processes of expansion and consolidation, manifest in the history of humanity?

Answer: On one hand, we settled throughout the world, we are separate and detached from each other, we hate others, and fight with them. We go beyond the former boundaries of the previous limitations, no longer wishing to observe them, we break our agreements, contracts, unions, thus “liberating” ourselves of our responsibilities.

The force that pushes us towards this kind of behavior is egoism. The higher it is, the less we are willing to be connected with anybody or anything. Nor do we want to owe anything to anyone.

On the other hand, the force of consolidation and togetherness also impacts us, making us connect and group together, promoting a feeling that we need each other, forcing us to look for the reasons to unite, find parallels, and experience closeness.

There is a reverse opportunity: the force of expansion opens our hearts to the entire world, whereas the force of consolidation comes out of the egoism and makes us seek personal benefit in connecting with others.

Everything depends on which one of these two forces form our world outlook: bad or good.

One way or the other, it is the interaction between both forces that originates a sensation of life in us. That’s why it is very important to balance these energies out so that both of them are oriented toward the right direction.

For example, we are prone to idealizing our fantasies about a “correct” couple that resembles two “doves.” However, in the real world, families are usually based on conflicts. They need “spice” without which their marriage becomes bland; it is about “logs” that should be added to the fire of love.

So, both forces have to be fully implemented; although, both of them should lead to achieving one, unified goal. Their combination has to be based on equilibrium and provide maximal effectiveness that comes from a joint power.

Question:  How can we create and maintain the balance between the two forces?

Answer: We should settle on one goal for both of them.

In essence, they are the forces of bestowal and receiving, attraction and repulsion. It is not important, at which level or in what sphere they are implemented—whether it is mechanics, electricity, or other fields of human activities.

At this time, we are talking about the influence of both forces inside us and among us, at a sensual level. Accordingly, we should balance out the intensity of our egoism with the altruistic force of bestowal.

Initially the force of reception dominates us: We want to attract and have in our possession everything that might be beneficial for us. Moreover, we don’t want others to have anything that is good for us. This is our original, genuine state. We should find ways to balance this bad force.

Our efforts to equalize the bad force within us will lead us to a system in which we maintain an internal harmony as a healthy cell of an organism. Together, vigorous cells replenish each other and take good care of their neighbors. If this happens, we are allowed to receive so that we can further benefit others.

Thus, we are forming a general organism, all parts of which are integrally connected. We generate a new “body,” a new life at the speaking level, above the inanimate, vegetative, and animate.

In other words, the human level is not about us the way we are today. At this time, we only occupy the top of the animate level. When we build a correct system, it will be called “a Man” (Adam). To the extent it contains both forces that are balanced with each other, we’ll start sensing nature in more depth and breadth.

Question: What do we lack today to be able to create a system that is adequate for the human level?

Answer: There is a deficiency of the bestowing force. At this time only the will to receive is acting in us.

Currently, we are transitioning from the animate level to a human level. However, it is only a force of receiving that we cultivate. Any of our bestowing actions are meant only to receive more and more. If not for that, we would not be able to give away anything at all.

So, no matter what we do, everything about us is just receiving, whether it is obvious or hidden. The will to receive rules everything, whereas we don’t have the force of bestowal at all.

However, if we find the way to generate a force of bestowal among us, to balance out the energy of receiving with the power of bestowal and then maintain the balance between both forces, they will turn us into a new creature called a “Man.” A new type of consciousness will grow in us. It will be built on both forces that allow us to form a system of bestowal above the receiving structure. When we manage to build both systems, we’ll sense the upper level of nature, the speaking level.

Today, we haven’t yet reached this level. We lack the second part of it, the force of bestowal. As a result, we cannot actually be connected and now we resemble a bunch of nuts in a sack that are held together only with the help of the external pressure; otherwise, they would just scatter.

The Borderline Of Our Evolution

laitman_742_03Question: We see alternating periods of destruction and creation in the evolution of the earth. Can we see it as analogous to the evolution of mankind?

Answer: It seems that nature only destroys what it creates. In fact, it is part of the evolutionary process in which every new phase requires overcoming the previous state and building a new phase above it.

As for a possible analogy to the history of mankind, it is all about the essence of the evolution of a single ego, of our desire to receive, that is out of balance with the One who bestows.

The confusion stems from the fact that the desire to receive is divided into two parts:

  • On the one hand, I yearn to receive for my direct self-benefit;
  • On the other hand, I am ready to give something to someone since I know that I will benefit from it. Although I simply feel good about my kindness, it is a clear reward since otherwise I would remain without any fuel to give.

Thus, I am constantly driven only by one force of receiving. No matter what I do, I do it all for my own sake. No one has the power to give something without calculating his own benefit. Even a mother takes care of her baby because she would feel pain if something were to happen to him. If you cut off that pain, her concern would disappear.

We basically are nothing but systems of thoughts and outcomes. My system would never agree to make even one gram of effort if it didn’t see any profit, response, or feeling in return. Our entire nature is arranged in this egoistic manner, and it only knows how to calculate things for its own benefit.

Therefore, all our kindness, no matter how sincere it is, is a lie. We cannot bestow purely unconditionally. Only a person who is insane or mentally ill can do something without calculating his personal profit.

So, how can we acquire the power of bestowal in order to balance our essence? This is what we must find out.

However, in any case, this force lies in nature, lies in our concealed plan, and it is now that we engage in the ascent from the animal level to the human level. A human being is already a created being who includes the two forces.

Meanwhile, we use the developing force of the human level only in a negative way and not the positive one that we should have established above the negativity.

Thus, we go through terrible states along a very difficult path until we decide that the path is bad and that we must complete it and balance it with the good force.

We are actually on this borderline, in the transition from our negative evolution to the positive completion.

The Influence Of The Jews On The Nations Of The World

Dr. Michael LaitmanBy studying the long periods of the Jews in the Diaspora and the exile of two thousand years, we can say that same phenomenon recurs over and over again.

Whenever they came into a new country, the Jewish people looked for shelter and a place where they could dwell and survive, and they could survive only by strongly uniting among them. Therefore, having no choice, we became closer when we were in exile, and the correct mutual relations were formed between us, not because we wanted it, but because we forced to do so.

Our positive attitude towards one another affected those around us. We brought science and culture to the people in the country where we lived and that country began to prosper.

But the moment we got used to a certain place, the ego grew between us, as did competition, and we became alienated from one another. These negative relations were reflected in the people that surrounded us and thus summoned in them hatred and accusations against us. As a result, we were expelled from that country and the country would deteriorate.

The internal state of the Jewish people was always conveyed to people they lived among and brought them either prosperity or recession.

Therefore, if we begin to get closer to one another today and establish the right mutual relations between us, we will summon a positive attitude on the part of the nations that surround us on every continent.

Anti-Semitism: Who Is To Blame And What Can Be Done?

Like Nuts In A Sack

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: In what way can we help each other to push our common wagon forward and advance?

Answer: Everything that is said in a lesson must be internalized in a person’s heart so that he will begin to live it. Everything that is covered by us must move into the Kelim, his emotions, in order to format and organize his inner desires so that one feels within them the phenomena he heard about.

Each one is certainly familiar with the text that we have already read many times previously. But to realize the simplest spiritual action is possible only if we think about connecting our shattered Kelim. It is necessary to imagine the picture accurately and clearly to ourselves: the egoistic envelope within which the spiritual spark is wrapped doesn’t allow us to connect with each other.

Even though we must try many times to connect between us with the right intention, we are certainly not ready for this. And from this, a genuine cry to the Creator will break out in each of us to allow and help us to connect.

Each one is in his egoistic capsule or bubble within which the spark of bestowal is held captive. And we ask the Creator to help us to connect, even though each one is wrapped in a rigid, external, egoistic shell, like nuts in a sack, as Baal HaSulam described. And in spite of it all, the nuts with which we can connect are within the sack.

For this, we must discover our true state and not hide or flee from it. This is because it is very unpleasant to feel our true egoistic essence, which is suddenly discovered after so many years of effort to reach bestowal. And so the prayer is born within us.

The Upper Light arrives only if there is a lack for it. And we must attain this lack, for it is impossible to scream artificially. So it is necessary for us to try and imagine our correct and true form, and we are already getting close to it. Widespread dissemination is very helpful with this, since through it, we have advanced in the last two months more than in previous several years.

Only the right prayer will help when we feel that we are not ready to connect. This is because we expect to discover the Creator with the right intention, meaning to bestow to Him and not to ourselves. For this, it is necessary for a radical revolution to happen, an inner revolution within our Kelim, which depends upon our entire great world group.

The Last Stage Of Corporeal Evolution

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Can we say that our spiritual advancement is parallel to the evolution of the world?

Answer: No. The corporeal world has already evolved to its ultimate phase. We on the other hand, are on the human level and can continue our evolution on a higher spiritual level.

This means that the still, vegetative, animate nature, and man in his animate nature, have exhausted all the options of their evolution. Therefore, the world doesn’t know how to go on. A person doesn’t have the powers or the right attributes to change anything. Civilization has reached a dead end in the course of its evolution and is now confronted with a general crisis in every aspect of life.

No one can see any way of putting an end to the situation we are in. There are, of course, wise guys in society who try to come up with solutions and thus advance, become more prominent, and make a profit from the current situation, but their suggestions very soon prove to be useless and are just like a hiring a “fakir per hour” and nothing more than that.

No matter what philosophers, economists, politicians, or sociologists say, they cannot offer anything constructive and positive. Although they see things correctly, and understand to some extent what is going on in society, their suggestions turn out to be totally absurd once put to a test. It is simply their ego that wants to say that it has some idea or a solution or at least a way to prevent the coming end.

We are in a very unpleasant state. The people have been anesthetized and thus keep on living with their small joys and sorrows, and staggering through their temporary existence as long things don’t get any worse.

For the first time in history, humanity is in a state of total apathy.

We have tried everything: feudalism, capitalism, socialism, and communism and now there is a certain inclination to return to the feudal system and split countries into small parts. It is the same idea as feudalism. Two hundred years ago, Germany was comprised of dozens of small principalities, and is now ready to split up again. Recently, there was a poll in Venice about breaking away from Italy.

They believe that there is something logical about this breakup: “If I detach myself from you and you detach yourself from me, we become independent administrative units and since we will be on our own, it will be easier to manage life within our borders.” The ego doesn’t conquer large areas, so it dominates small republics that have split up.

On the whole, they are very nationalistic and are even ready for sacrifice as long as they can be independent. The Catalonians, for example, cannot stand the Spanish and the Corsicans cannot stand the French and the Scots cannot stand the British.

This is a sign that we are not ready for unity and are trying to avoid it in any possible way, although nature obliges us to unite. If we were ready to unite, according to our parameters, feelings, and desires, there wouldn’t be any problems.

When the Europeans decided to establish the EU, they didn’t understand that they have to annul, not only the borders, but also to the imbalance between the states. They could have done all that, but their egos didn’t allow them to do so. It remained uncorrected and so many nations now want to go back to something more tangible and small and the feeling that “this is mine.”

Every one of the seven billion people on this planet is isolated in his corner. More and more people communicate with each other only through the Internet. Only the method of integral education provides a way out from this dead end.
