Human Developmental Stages

laitman_232_04Question: The spiritual level is above the human level, and in order to go out to it, one must bring our internal characteristics of reception to a state of bestowal. What is the level that is under the still level, and how do we pay attention to it, feel it within us?

Answer: Under the spiritual still level is the same level you are in now, the beast, meaning perception through your beastly body alone.

“The Current Crisis Won’t Be Corrected Without A War”

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (pravda.ru/economics): “Many experts compare the current economic crisis to the crisis of 2008-2009: the fact that coping with it was managed. But it is not so simple. ‘Speaking economically, but in 2008 the Americans managed to get the world to buy its crisis. But this year, the world will not be able to buy the US crisis,’ …

“The main thing is that the current crisis cannot be fixed without a war, and this is very bad. The methods that were used for the elimination of the 2008 crisis, are simply not working. They were not enough. This applies not only to Western countries, but also to us. [Russsia] …

“Even though the United States has gradually begun to emerge from the crisis, this movement is only for the upper third of the population, while the poorest third of the population is deteriorating into even greater poverty. …

“The simplest solution, which the masters of life generally use when they don’t succeed in overcoming a crisis, is war. The war increases credit. The Americans have often tried to use this, but recent wars have not helped them. A unipolar world cannot bring peace to humanity and an unstable system will push us closer and closer to global war”.

My Comment: I agree that the present crisis is impossible to correct without war! Its nature is not economic nor demographic, meaning that it is not within the societal structures that were created by humanity, but within human nature itself. The required war is only against our egoistic nature, as it is the origin of all of our problems.

So, the wisdom of Kabbalah has been revealed, which is the method for war with the universal ego. Specifically, we must begin this anti-egoistic world war as quickly as possible! And the moment this war begins, we will enter into a state of peace, a state of a higher new world!

Refugees: What Will Happen To Europe? Part 4

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Tsunami Will Continue

We shouldn’t sit and wait for a “bright future.” We have to help Europe right now. It is already overwhelmed with refugees. This is not just an accidental tsunami, but a series of consequential blows from nature that are meant to trigger changes in humanity as a whole.

It is time to change our nature from egoism to loving our neighbors as ourselves. It involves everyone, but the people of Israel have to be the first in this process.

If we procrastinate in this stage and don’t work to help the Europeans by explaining to them what is happening, if we don’t explain the essence of the problem and the method for the solution to this disaster, the European tsunami will spread to us as well. The was stated by the prophets Ezekiel and Isaiah.

One way or the other, the Europeans are at an impasse and until they understand what the true solution is, their troubles will continue. They face a long process full of threats and despair until they realize that only changing their individualistic nature can help them survive and resolve the situation.

Refugees: What Will Happen To Europe? Part 3

Dr. Michael LaitmanConsenting To Changes

At this time, we are witnesses of the very beginning of the process: Europeans have recognized that they cannot leave refugees to fend for themselves, but at the same time, they don’t know how to take them in.

Those same Europeans, who for thousands of years, if not more, murdered each other and in which executions were an everyday “theater” for the common people, no longer live as in the past; they are unable to resist the invasion of refugees.

The question is, “Why?” The failure to act is fraught with serious danger.

We see that nature obligates us to change our internal structure. We will eventually understand and acknowledge that we really need this change. We will consent to this state of affairs and will wish for these modifications to our nature. Only then, will we gradually start changing.

The situation will reach a degree at which we will suddenly sense that we are unwilling to go back to our egoism. On the contrary, we will continue our path towards correction and eventually we will break the boundaries that separate us. This is a global process and it will last until we all merge into one family and become as one indivisible whole.

It will happen under financial and economic blows, numerous threats, and a series of natural disasters. Nature is unbalanced because of us, so, it will push us around.

So far, we haven’t started building the equilibrium and unity, which we should have already realized according to evolutionary development. That’s why nature will force us to understand the situation we are in and to want change.

As a result of numerous disasters, the people of the world will eventually realize and feel that it is the people of Israel who know the solution to this problem. Then, they will appeal to the people of Israel and put this requirement forth. This is the time when Israelis will disclose the methodology of correction, called the wisdom of Kabbalah, to all nations. In essence, the wisdom of Kabbalah is the art and science of connecting people.

When this happens, Israel will turn into the “Light for the nations.”

At The Bottom Of An Upside Down Pyramid

laitman_220The uncertainty regarding the future is becoming increasingly more prominent in our world. We have developed the most advanced technologies, psychological methods of changing people and society, and tools for managing and confusing the masses, yet with science and all the knowledge of how to manage people, we don’t control ourselves.

After all, we never know what the next day will be, and this is our main problem—man doesn’t control his future and not even the near future, the next moment.

Perhaps we don’t feel the need for this control so much because we have already gotten used to living from one day to the next not knowing what that day may be, but it is actually a great tragedy. After all, if we knew for sure and were certain about how to relate to our future, it could save us all the mistakes we make regarding ourselves and nature. It would raise us to the next level of our evolution.

The question is whether we are capable of it. After all, knowing the future means being certain about life and death, about the way we should educate our children, about what profession we should choose and the family we should create. Knowing the future will enable me to know whether I should get out of bed today or not.

Feeling and foreseeing the future could save us a lot of trouble. We wouldn’t be involved in endless futile and even harmful actions. On the contrary, we would dedicate our time to something useful.

This means that our only problem is regarding the future. We are miserable because we don’t know how to approach this issue. Despite a person’s desire to know the future, subconsciously he holds on to the current moment like an animal. The incompatibility between the feeling that I want to understand and that I cannot humiliates a person and turns him into an even more miserable creature than a simple animal.

A simple animal lives and dies when the time comes. It doesn’t think about life or death, acting instinctively. Simple people also relate to life that way and don’t ask about the future or self-fulfillment. But a person who rises a bit above his daily routine and begins to think about his fate, make plans, and has expectations for the future sees that it is all beyond his control.

Many things a person engages in are about the aspiration of revealing the future a little, of predicting certain phenomena, at least the weather. Psychology, philosophy, economics, and political economics deal with this issue. But eventually all the economic predictions and the infinite graphs are far from reality.

Many unexpected factors suddenly come up: wars and relations between states and people that were impossible to predict in advance. Human history, the basis on which we seem to grow wiser and gain experience, doesn’t help us in any way when it comes to the future. This is even more frustrating and makes the future seem dark and unknown.

We gradually understand how small and miserable we are. Advanced nanotechnologies offer us unprecedented opportunities and the ability to create molecules of everything including food. At the same time, this control is given to us only according to what we already have. The question about the future remains in the dark: Why and for what reason? Even if we can extend our life by 200 or 500 years, our future will remain just as scary as it is today.

When we were kids we used to ask: What is life and death? What is today and tomorrow? But when we grow up we forget these questions; we give them up because of our hormones, studies, and career. It makes no difference how long our life is. The fact that there is something uncertain about it and that the next moment cannot be predicted nullifies my human essence.

This is how we discover that there is a force that is beyond the human force that manages us, human society, and our evolution. Of course we don’t make our own history, as people like to say. There is a program of human evolution that spins more more intensively second by second compared to the evolution of the inanimate, vegetative, and animal nature.

With regard to this plan of evolution, we are as dominated as animals. We simply fulfill all the thoughts and desires that emerge in us at any given moment. We discover them in us according to some upper plan that we are obliged to fulfill.

It turns out that there is some hidden plan in nature that operates on the inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature, and also on all of humanity. At the same time, the plan regarding man is different from the plan that operates on the other parts of nature, and as a result of our evolution, we arrive at the question: “What are we living for?” And animals have no such question.

The question: “What is the point of our life?” is troubling us more and more. I think that this question is already the major question of human society and subconsciously constantly occupies a person with the hope of finding out what he lives for. Or at least a person tries to erase this question from his sight to ignore it and keep on living as he did the day before and perhaps even tomorrow without thinking and torturing his life with the fact that he has no answer.

Our evolution, especially in the last few years, is meant to clarify this question. Humanity is increasingly more attracted to it, and if he doesn’t, man will gradually deteriorate and antidepressants and drugs will become more common, families will continue to break-up, people will lose hope regarding the future and will not want to have children. If there is no clear answer about what tomorrow will be; today isn’t worth anything either! This is the reason that a person will try to spend the day suffering as little as possible, which means that he will take a pill, fall asleep, and end his life that way.

This means that the question about the meaning of life is awakening increasingly more widely among people and demands an answer. After all, in the 70’s, about 50 years ago, humanity developed to such a level that it could theoretically provide all of the individual’s needs. A person could have stopped worrying about his daily bread. If there was a shortage of food somewhere, it was because of the lack of organization. In fact, humanity produces enough food to feed the whole world.

Never in history has this been the case. People always lived like animals, constantly worrying about tomorrow’s bread. If there is a food shortage anywhere today, it is only because we lack the organization, mutual help, and right connections between us. We can actually provide all of a person’s needs, but it is actually in the most developed countries that we see the greatest problems related to people’s lack of desire to be developed.

Everything is in decline: our culture, education, science; there is no renovation in any area. There is no aspiration forward, no motivation. The young generation is a truly miserable generation. After all, we don’t need to fight in order to survive and provide the needs for our corporeal body, but at the same time, we cannot give the human part in us the answer about what the future holds and what we are living for. As a result, the corporeal body isn’t hungry, but the human part has no answer to his question and will not have one. Consequently we descend to the animal level and live somehow. People don’t want to study or work and settle for a small allowance in order to survive.

This trend affects modern culture and modern education. Therefore, if we ask ourselves about man’s place in nature, it seems worse and more miserable than that of the still and vegetative nature and the animals. Man is on the lowest level of all as a result of our evolution.

The Trend Of Our Time
The Era Of Understanding

An Unbiased Look At The World

Dr. Michael LaitmanThere are certain actions a person must carry out by changing his or her egoistic nature. After all, our nature forces us to love only ourselves, to gain at the expense of our neighbors, regardless of the suffering it causes to the other and even enjoying it.

In the same manner, we don’t take into account the Creator. If it weren’t for the fear of the upper force, we wouldn’t think of it at all. However, there is concealment, due to which I don’t know what will happen to my life, my children, those close to me, or myself. Will I still be alive in the next moment? What does the next day have in store for me? Therefore, I perform a calculation and decide to be good.

We think that the Creator has some obligations with respect to a person if he carries out his obligations with respect to the Creator. In other words, if a person behaves correctly, the Creator treats him well.

Yet there is another condition that obliges us to not only relate well to the Creator, but also to the whole world and the levels of the still, vegetative, animate, and human. I need to treat the world that surrounds me like I treat myself. Hence it is written, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” My neighbor is anything within my environment.

Imagine that I treat everything outside of me with the same level of sensitivity, care, and love as I treat myself! I then stop feeling the difference between me and what is outside of me. The whole inanimate world, plants, animals, and people become like me.

I feel that I, the whole world, and the whole universe are as one pie in which I exist. There is no difference between what I have inside and what is outside. If we achieve this state, we thereby cancel all the boundaries and acquire an additional sense that allows us to feel what is outside of us. I have always felt the outside world through judging how beneficial something is for me. And now I cancel my egoism, my preconceived notion, and I just feel the outside world.

Suddenly I discover that the outside world and I merge into one, which is called the upper world, or the Garden of Eden. The world is full of light, energy, life, and pleasure. There is only the Upper Light, which exists in absolute rest and tranquility. There are no separations, limitations, or time.

I exit the limitations of this egoistic world and our egoistic perceptions and I reveal a new true reality, which is not bound by the boundaries of my egoism.

If I reach such a perception, when I feel the whole world as one whole, where the upper and lower worlds unite, I can feel all the Light that fills them, the only force of the Creator, then I reveal the truth, by which I exist in this world.

Does The Person Act Or Is The Person Activated?

Laitman_712_03Question: On the one hand, we see that the person is part of nature, and everything that happens with him affects him. However, on the other hand, we place ourselves at the top of the pyramid as the crown of creation, something higher that stands above all of nature.

We are different than other creatures in intelligence, in our wisdom, and in the ability to plan and develop. We have a special addition that is not the same for any other part of nature. What place does the person hold in the system of nature?

Answer: Without a doubt, man is an integral part of nature. Our bodies belong to the animate level; all of its systems are like animals’, and there is nothing special about them. We produce children exactly in the same manner and take care of them like any animal.

A human begins where his thought, his education, and the power of his intellect, his intelligence, is awakened and developed from generation to generation, and along with the intellect, emotions are developed, the awareness of who he is and where he is. These questions are aroused in every generation, but with a newer quality.

There is a very great role for education here. In addition to development from the side of nature, we develop ourselves with the help of special systems within us, and we pass our scientific knowledge and experience from generation to generation. This is not like the survival experience that animals transmit to their offspring.

Humans transmit wisdom, scientific knowledge, and a perception of the world to their children. So, we are stronger than all of them and are ready to develop means that animals do not attain. The ape doesn’t know how to use anything besides a stick, and a human invents more sophisticated tools.

Animals are entirely activated by nature on the level of instincts and don’t ask where the orders that they obey come from. However, a human can ask why this is happening this way and is it possible to do this differently? He searches for how to leave unpleasant situations and achieve maximal comfort. It is as if he were guided by the same motivations as animals, but the animals act instinctively, like a machine. And even though many latent instincts and habits are incorporated in man and are transmitted from generation to generation, what is unique about him is that he learns constantly.

A human learns from an environment that influences him very strongly, and he changes according to the environment. Latent in him is the aspiration to leave the place where he is, to develop, to conquer new areas, to feel that he is in control, and to understand and exploit everything around him with his own powers. But we see that if a human being acts this way according to his desire, he must constantly escape from the troubles that he causes himself. As a result, he becomes more miserable, even though he is above all of nature.

We develop under the pressure of our egoism, which doesn’t exist among the animals. Animals act only according to instincts, and humans have freedom of choice: what and how to do something. So, it follows that in every situation in life, I have a possibility of doing something good or not good in relation to others, and clearly I make a choice according to my personal benefit. However, I must check carefully as to what exactly is beneficial to me. After all, a person is different from animals by also having the power of destruction, and he is capable of harming himself.

This destructive power is the control of our ego, and humans must fulfill the commands of this power even if they understand that because of it, they are sentencing themselves to a very difficult life. They must submit to this internal aspiration. They see that they are on the threshold of war, but they still cannot stop and are ready for death because their ego is stronger than their survival instinct.

An animal never goes against the survival instinct. A female is even ready to abandon her cubs to the mercy of predators to escape them herself. The natural instinct dictates that a greater and healthier part is more important than a small and weak one, and therefore the female must be saved first. That is how nature obligates animals to act in accord with the procreative instinct. However, a person can act completely differently. A mother is ready to risk her life to save her children, which is not typical of animals.

An animal simply fights for its territory, food, and continuation of the generation. But the moment that it feels that it is weaker than the enemy, it will withdraw without shame and remorse. These feelings simply don’t exist in animals. They have a normal instinct, as if it is some force working rather than the biological body. They simply gauge which is the stronger force, and the weaker surrenders. But a human is ready to fight for “truth” and “justice,” but all of these are expressions of his pride, his ego. The human must prove that he is justified, and with this he manifests his personal feelings.

Our body is no different than the body of animals. The human within us is our pride, envy, and lust. It is specifically these characteristics that differentiate us from the animal world. So the place of the human in nature is not like the place of the still, vegetative, and animate, and we instinctively distinguish ourselves from them. In addition, we can control other parts of nature: killing animals, putting them in a cage, domesticating them, and using them for food. Moreover, we absolutely dominate the nature of the vegetative and still, so we consider ourselves as being above all of nature.

But if we look at the human being, we see that what stands out is his envy, his aspiration for control and respect, characteristics that are irrelevant to the animal instincts, and so they elevate the human above everything. At the same time, even humans are managed by nature. After all, if I don’t know what will happen to me in the next moment, this brings me to the level of the normal animal. If I don’t control my future, even for the next moment, I already am dominated by nature.

So, I must clarify: Who am I really? The one who acts or the one who is activated? It seems as if I activate levels that are found above me. But I have no control over myself nor over human society. On the contrary, I am activated from above, that is, I am given the opportunity to control the nature of the still, vegetative, and animate, but I don’t control myself and what is above me, my fate and my future. In that, I am completely controlled.

This is the tragedy of the human who seems so strong and successful in all that he does. He possesses emotion, intelligence, a developed consciousness, and powerful means. After we developed to this level, we suddenly discovered that we cannot even touch what is most essential.

When We Open The Book Of Zohar

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: When we start reading The Book of Zohar, why do you often ask: “Do you have something to ask from the Creator?”

Answer: Certainly, otherwise for what reason do you have The Book of Zohar? After all, why do you open it? It is to discover the truth. The truth is revealed only if you awaken the right line, which is love. When you awaken it, you must understand, feel, and discover that in fact there is no love within you, but only hatred. And further, it is such a hatred that you are not able to sit next to your friends.

In order not to remain indifferent to each other, it is necessary to demand that the Creator reveal all of this to us: the love, hatred, mutual cooperation, and the conflicts between us. We lack the third factor, which is turning and demanding! The Creator is a force, a condition, and a system that demands constant turning towards it. As long as this doesn’t exist, you must do a lot of work. There is nothing that can be done about it, since it is impossible to skip over these levels.

In The Shadow Of The Asteroid Cloud

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Is the impression created that Adam HaRishon (the first man) Adam was much more advanced than we are because he felt the upper force we don’t feel?

Answer: There is no doubt about it! Spiritual development doesn’t proceed parallel to physical development. On the contrary, the first Kabbalists were much closer to the upper force and the upper worlds than we are. If we now had the luck to meet with our father Abraham, it would be possible to ask him many questions. In the spiritual sense, a constant decline happens more and more with each generation. And accordingly, our ego and technological advancement, along with financial and economic development, have grown more and more..

Ultimately we have reached maximal technological advancement and minimal spiritual development in this world. And so the global crisis develops and breaks out, which is moving and felt all over the world in our time. It is possible to solve this crisis only through the revelation of the wisdom of Kabbalah to all of humanity. If all of us are united, we will reach discovery of the upper force and this world will ascend to the height of the upper worlds.

Question: We scarcely make any money to live in this world, but you want us to be involved with higher worlds?

Answer: The present crisis is only the beginning. Terrible blows are expected for the world. I don’t want to scare you, but unfortunately that is how it is. We already see clear symptoms now of a future Holocaust all over the world that nobody can stop.

The idea is that the world is becoming round. The higher spiritual forces are approaching our world like an asteroid cloud or a comet. The higher forces that are linked in a single network compress in an increasingly dense ring around our world, which is not connected into a single network. Rather, everything is divided, separate, crushed and torn apart by internal struggles. Our world and the network of higher forces that are approaching it are in opposition and contradiction with each other, so very unpleasant and negative phenomena are revealed in our world. They will grow more and more until we begin to connect and unite to be more and more adjusted to the one and only integral force. Only in this manner can we be saved.

Question: Are all the problems of the modern world sent to us as a punishment?

Answer: There are no punishments! It is only people who perceive what is happening in this way. In fact the law of nature is simply acting on us. More and worsening negative forces are awakening within us as we see the ego has grown from generation to generation. But higher spiritual forces are approaching us more and more like a single network. The opposition between these two systems is increasing: On the one hand, there is the evil human ego, and on the other hand, there is a higher network of good forces. Between them appear the potential differences and tension that we endure.

We cannot change the higher network; we need to only correct ourselves and unite. And you shall love your friend as yourself is the great general rule in the Torah. (Yerushalmi Nedarim 30b), which if not for its existence, we wouldn’t survive. The whole world is becoming global and integral, linked like a single small village. And as such, the world demands from humanity an identical good connection between them. But we are not ready to create a connection like this, so we suffer.

Only the wisdom of Kabbalah can bring all of humanity to good and wonderful relations, so it is being revealed in our time. Further, The Book of Zohar, which was written 2,000 years ago, pointed to our time when humanity would reach a state where it would be compelled to use the method of Kabbalah to connect itself and live in happiness. So I wish for a good and sweet year for everyone, meaning a year in which we have a chance to reach the good life.

Yom Kippur: Universal Joy Or Grief?

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus”, 23:26 – 23:28: And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: But on the tenth of this seventh month, it is a day of atonement, it shall be a holy occasion for you; you shall afflict yourselves, and you shall offer up a fire offering to the Lord. You shall not perform any work on that very day, for it is a day of atonement, for you to gain atonement before the Lord, your God.

The counting of the months in the spiritual work begins in Pesach (Passover). The seventh month from Pesach correlates to Malchut, to the seventh Sefira that comes after Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, and Yesod. The tenth and last Sefira in Malchut (Malchut of Malchut), which symbolizes the tenth day of the month, is Yom Kippur, when a person comes to the lowest point of his nature and raises his prayer from it. This means that a person reaches a state that isn’t in his power to correct by himself, so he simply detaches himself and does whatever is in his power to raise a request for correction.

Yom Kippur is a holiday. It is a day of joy, when I have something to turn with and someone to turn to (the upper force) with this request. I can actually do that since I have reached the lowest point by my actions. In other words, I have reached the very last state through my clarifications and internal psychological searching for who I am, what I am, towards what my actions are aimed, and what am I living for. I have discovered that it is totally egoistic and that there is no connection with others within this state.

At this point I can only cry out, and this is a point of atonement and forgiveness where I feel my nature as the hateful ego and I wish to detach myself from it with all my might. I don’t want to use the ego when it comes to food, water, or in any actions, and I cannot overcome it. The only thing I can do is raise a prayer to the upper force so that He will correct me. This is the meaning of my request.

We can reach a state of atonement and forgiveness any time, regardless of the calendar date of Yom Kippur. It happens when the upper force can perform corrections on me. Only He can help me; I cannot correct myself, but I can ask Him for this correction.

Comment: Everything that happens in the spiritual world is opposite from whatever there is in the corporeal world, because for us, Yom Kippur is a day of universal grief and not a day of joy.

Answer: In the past, the state of Yom Kippur was understood correctly, but during the 2,000 years of exile, we have attributed it to our own feelings and have matched our feelings with this day. In fact, it is a state of joy because all the holidays are joyful.
