Feelings that Cannot Be Conveyed

255Comment: There is always a layer of internal feelings behind your words. I understand what you are saying when you are explaining it, but I cannot convey it to others. There is always something lacking.

My Response: You will not succeed because my spiritual perception is on the opposition of two systems: egoistic and altruistic. And I somehow project this onto you. But you so far have only one system, i.e., you perceive what I say, but cannot convey it to another person.

Question: And if I were to manage to convey information to a person, would he be able to perceive it?

Answer: Every person can perceive it to some extent because you convey it to them in your instruments.

Question: When you speak in public, you have an internal exchange of information. People understand you, but when they leave a lecture and are asked, “How was it?”, they can’t really answer.

Answer: Nevertheless, they were able to feel something within themselves. They saw truth, logic, feelings, and verbal transmission of information and accepted my message. But they cannot convey and accurately define it. That usually happens the first time we perceive something new. But then you have to work hard to begin to recognize all this.

Connection of the Souls of Israel with the Nations of the World

610.2Question: You said that we are connected to the nations of the world through Malchut. How do we work with this? What should we do with this common desire?

Answer: The nations of the world mostly stem from Malchut de Malchut, while the souls of Israel come from the first nine Sefirot within Malchut. Therefore, the souls of Israel can begin to attract light upon themselves and then channel it through themselves to all the nations of the world.

Although Israel goes first, when the nations of the world come to master the correction of nature, they will do much more than Israel as they comprise the main part of Malchut.

Question: How can I associate myself more with the first nine Sefirot than with Malchut de Malchut?

Answer: The first nine Sefirot represent the quality of bestowal. If you align yourself with the qualities of bestowal as much as possible in every movement you make, you will join them. No one will be able to take this from you; you will be in charge of your own destiny.

219.01Question: Rabash said that one can only correct oneself and that it takes much practice to gain control over one’s egoism. Why would we correct others if they will automatically correct themselves when we do?

Answer: Our correction depends on the connection between us. Therefore, dissemination is a very important action.

We do not take any obstacles into account but only wish to disseminate Kabbalah as a teaching about the correction of humanity and its elevation to the highest level—the level of the Creator.

When Can the Bitter Truth Be Spoken?

963.4Question: There is an Arabic proverb: “Before telling someone the bitter truth, anoint the tip of your tongue with honey.”

Should you tell a person the bitter truth or not? It is said: “Before telling a person the bitter truth.” Should we or not?

Answer: We must calculate whether this truth, although bitter, is necessary for him. If it is truly necessary.

Question: This is quite a task you are asking of us: to think of another at this moment?

Answer: Of course. The one who tells the bitter truth to another must experience this bitter truth on himself although it does not apply to him.

Question: So he should walk in his shoes, as they say, then he can tell the bitter truth?

Answer: Yes.

Question: And if not, if he did not test it on himself?

Answer: If he has not tested what he wants to tell the other, where he wants to lead the other with his statement, then it is better not to say it.

Question: So, who is this bitter truth for?

Answer: This is a bitter truth for another.

Question: But tested on the one who says it?

Answer: If it is tested on him, then he can speak.

Question: What does it mean if we go according to this Arabic proverb, “You must first anoint the tip of your tongue with honey?”

Answer: So that it is clothed in something sweet and comforts a person, in hope, in faith, and perhaps in some benefit.

Comment: That is, you cannot throw it at him…

My Response: No! You should not say anything bad at all.

Comment: You are in favor of a medicine that…

My Response: That heals.

Question: And that may be covered in some sweet syrup or some sweet wrapper?

Answer: Yes, maybe.

Question: Have you told the bitter truth to any person or to people in general? You do know it. Do you tell the truth?

Answer: No.

Question: Why not?

Answer: What for? This can be said to a person only when he has the strength, the ability to understand, realize, accept, and solve this problem in himself. And if he does not have such training, why tell him?

Question: So, you think that man or humanity is not yet ready for the bitter truth?

Answer: It is not ready! Whatever wrapper you use, it is not ready.

Question: When will we be ready to hear the bitter truth?

Answer: I do not know.

Question: But should we? One way or another, will we have to go through this stage?

Answer: I do not think we need to say anything. We need to act in such a way that the Creator tells people all this.

Question: So our task is to bring the Creator to people?

Answer: Yes.

Question: To do so, do we have to attain the bitter truth ourselves or not?

Answer: Of course! Or you will not pray for the Creator to do it.

Question: For Him to come to the people?

Answer: Right.

Which to Choose: Plain Truth or a Beautiful Lie?

600.04Question: There were two books on the bookshelf, one was expensive with beautiful binding and the other in a cheap, poor binding. The owner read the expensive, pretty book and said: “This is neither for the mind nor for the heart.” He read the inexpensive one, cried, and said: “I have never read anything more useful for the soul.”

He still left both books on the shelf, one for the soul and the other, beautiful one, for people.

Why, after the owner found the truth, does he think so poorly of others?

Answer: He does not think poorly. First, he has no right to take away their freedom of choice or impose anything.

Second, only in this way, when you have two sides of the same coin can you show a person which path leads him where. Therefore, we must leave both books.

Comment: He found the truth. He wants others to slowly get closer to it too.

My Response: Certainly.

Question: Still, can one live only through inner work, only through this unsightly book that contains the truth?

Answer: No, this work must be combined with practice. Practice is a struggle. It is a physical fight with those who oppose it. That is why we returned to this country, to this land, and why the Creator prepared what for us to do in advance, these trials.

Question: If we reach the truth, will these trials seem to dissipate? Isn’t that why they exist, to push us?

Answer: Certainly, trials exist so that we can build ourselves and this truth to enter us.

Question: Do we still meet a person based on our soul or appearance?

Answer: I do not know. It depends.

Question: I will ask it even more simply: Is love at first sight based on one’s soul or appearance?

Answer: At first sight, something that is brighter catches your eye.

Question: What about love at first sight when, for example, one can no longer live and walks around thinking only about it?

Answer: If this is already becoming awareness, the first glance will not help.

Question: So the look is still external?

Answer: Yes, it is simply blinding. And then, when you begin to look closer, it is no longer love and not the first glance. It is already a feeling of similarity, closeness, understanding, devotion, etc.

Question: Does the similarity of properties allow people who live 50 and 60 years together to continue like this?

Answer: Certainly, those people who have lived together for more than 10 years, even just 10 years, already live on what they have acquired—those common feelings, properties, understandings, and so on.

Question: Grigory Perelman, a famous mathematician, refused a million-dollar prize and did not want to move anywhere. He lives, or lived, with his mother, alone, and so on. He has nothing external; he is always dressed the same. He lives internally. What is it? Or is this a natural state for scientists?

Answer: This is the natural state of life for people like him who live to understand creation. Feeling the image of creation within himself is the most important thing for him. He is disconnected from everything.
He is not interested in politics, war, or anything else, only in his cerebral uneasiness, which does not give him peace.

Question: What kind of world do such scientists live in? It isn’t in this one, is it?

Answer: No, not in this one of course, not the world of today. Most of the scientists live in some kind of interstellar space.

Question: Is this world enough for him? What is enough for him? Sandals, trousers, shirt, and off you go?

Answer: Yes, that is how he appears.

Question: His world is different. Is it a rich world?

Answer: It is a world in which he feels rich and sufficient. There is nothing else.

Question: I will ask you as a scientist, how does he perceive all of us, everyone around him who make films about him, talk about him, and so on?

Answer: Indifferent.

Question: As if we do not exist?

Answer: Yes, for him, it does not exist.

Question: Great scientists, were they like that?

Answer: There are very few of them. Each of them has its little devil inside.

Question: Kabbalah is the science of inner experiences and desires. Even though we are disseminating Kabbalah, are we still making it external to people and gradually attracting them? Or what are we doing?

Answer: We want to attract people to the inner state of Kabbalah that speaks about the revelation of the Creator to man in our world.

Question: Do we make it attractive to them for this? Is this right?

Answer: How else will you do it?

Question: So, do we have to spruce it up for them?

Answer: Of course, all people are like children. When we approach something or someone, we approach from afar, gradually.

Question: Is it possible to take complex texts and popularize them gradually?

Answer: Of course, yes. Baal HaSulam did what the Ari and other great Kabbalists before him did. They devoted a lot of time and attention to this.

Question: To bring this science to people?

Answer: Yes, it is very challenging. Although their highest texts are high for us. And for them, it was descending to people like us.

Question: So this is the correct process: do not rise to me, I will go down to you and raise you?

Answer: What else can you do? Otherwise, we will never have contact with those souls who have reached the Creator and are at that level.

The Wisdom of Omar Khayyam

202.0We are the source of joy and sorrow mine.
We are a repository of filth, and pure spring.
People, as in a mirror, the world is multifaceted.
He is insignificant and he is infinitely great! (Omar Khayyam)

Question: We are a repository of what? Are we a repository of filth or purity? Or both?

Answer: Both.

Question: What do you mean by that? What is it within us?

Answer: We were cast away from the Creator to the opposite side. We do not feel the Creator; we do not feel close to Him; we do not feel the need to get closer to Him. We simply absorbed within ourselves the very worst, the most egoistic things.

Question: Is this what you call filth?

Answer: Filth is the fact that we deny the world with the Creator altogether. What is important to us is not a connection with the Creator, but rather, a weapon in our hands.

Question: But you said there is also purity within us. What is that?

Answer: It is because we cannot understand our state. This is what saves us. Even the fact that we are so far from the Creator and do not accept His decisions, is all still forgiven and strengthens us because we truly are a lost generation.

Question: So where is the purity in all this?

Answer: The purity lies in the fact that nothing sticks to us. We do not become soiled by being in filth because we also do not feel it, it is also not with us.

Question: Do we not feel that we are filthy, that we are so bad? Do you call this a drop of purity within us?

Answer: Yes, this is purity. It will help us, and it does help.

Question: But should we feel that we are in filth in order to rise out of it, to want to cleanse ourselves?

Answer: We do not need that to such an extent. The extent we are in it is enough. We need to work on this. It will manifest in us to the extent it should manifest.

Comment: You have become more benevolent toward people.

My Response: I just belong to the generation I live in, and I see how they react to everything, to the extent that the Creator allows them to feel who they are and what they are.

Question: Is this enough? Should we not strive for more?

Answer: I believe it is. Everything else will come.

Comment: To be honest, I am surprised!

My Response: But how to do it?

Comment: To somehow make it so that a person feels that, as you said, he has a weapon in his hands, not the Creator and that this is bad, that he should somehow strive for connection with Him.

My Response: But that has no positive solution. We must necessarily understand that we are alone with the Creator.

Question: There is us and the Creator. Is this what we should come to?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Will this be enough?

Answer: Yes! This will be enough.

Question: What conclusion will come from this? Let’s say, God willing, we come to the state of “there is us and the Creator.” What next? You say, “This is high.” What is it? “There is us and the Creator,” we have reached that. What are my actions next? Is it always to be in accordance with Him?

Answer: Yes. Next, my actions are only with the Creator!

Question: Do I then feel the filth, do I already understand how to get out of it, and so on?

Answer: Yes.

Question: So do we just need this little first contact?

Answer: Yes, do not rely on anyone else, only on the Creator.

Question: I see. Does it come from the Creator or still from my efforts?

Answer: It comes from the Creator, but to the extent of our efforts.

Question: So do we still have to make efforts?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Further, from this quatrain of Omar Khayyam: What does it mean that a person is multifaceted?

Answer: Yes, it means that we are always trying to turn and look for something better, something closer, and so on.

Question: Are these our many faces?

Answer: Yes, but we do not find ourselves anywhere. Yet, we need only one direction and one solution.

Question: It is also said here that we are insignificant and at the same time great. In what way are we great after all?

Answer: We are great in that the Creator is with us and insignificant in that we do not pay attention to Him.

Question: So do we have both in us?

Answer: Yes, something needs to be done!

Question: Do we need to somehow come to one of these two?

Answer: To what?! How do you propose to bring that about?! It does not depend on just one person. It depends on a collective decision, on the spirit within the people!

Comment: But you have been involved in this your whole life.

My Response: So what? I see that in the end nothing really works.

Gradually, of course, we will still come to it, we cannot escape from that. But it is impossible, absolutely impossible, to reach a state where the entire nation rises up as one and says, “This is mine, this is ours, and we are together.”

Question: I see. But still, the whole nation as one I understand, but a group leads the people, they stand up and speak. And the people sort of join them willingly. It is still like that, right?

Answer: Yes.

Comment: You once told a story about going to some store to make a duplicate key a long time ago. And you had the book Tree of Life with you. You put it on the counter, and the religious shopkeeper suddenly said, “Take it away, take it away. Get rid of it!” No one even wanted to come close to Kabbalah, even to the great Ari.

Today it is simple, just go on the Internet. And we have accomplished so much more. You say you are feeling like giving up. Why? It happened! Look how many students we have now!

My Response: But on the other hand, it does not resonate with the people, with the masses. Not yet.

Nevertheless, we have broken through some barrier between Kabbalah and the people, which collapsed and opened Kabbalah to everyone.

Question: Do you think people are still driven by suffering to move forward?

Answer: I do not know. It depends on the path we have to take. Constantly proving to the people that salvation lies in unity between us and the Creator is our task.

Question: Is it our constant, specific task?

Answer: Yes. There cannot be any other way here!

Question: Do you reduce everything to one formula: unity among us is unity with the Creator?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this the main formula?

Answer: It encompasses everything.

Question: Is all the wisdom directed toward this, everything toward this?

Answer: Yes.

Question: As Baal HaSulam said, the unity of humanity and connection with the Creator. Is this what it means for the Creator to be revealed to the entire world?

Answer: Yes. Exactly!

The Secret of Our Relationship

962.8Question: According to Kabbalah, all structures are built according to the four stages of the development of desire. Does this apply even to works of fiction and movie scripts?

Answer: If we want to fill a desire, we must treat it the way the light that created it treats it, according to the same four stages of development.

Any literary work develops in four stages. I am sure that all playwrights, writers, and even journalists who seek to attract the reader’s attention, understand that their work must be built on four stages, including the climax and the ending.

Otherwise, if it does not correspond to the structure of our desire, then a person simply will not understand what they want to sell to him, what they want to fill him with. Therefore, all writers should create in the same way as the Creator, according to the four stages of direct light.

There is such a formula when pleasure, in order to create a desire for itself that would feel it precisely as pleasure, must contact this desire for four consecutive and opposite stages, when intention and desire, pleasure and hunger, play with each other until they become completely opposite and at the same time can be together.

People instinctively understood that it should be built in this way, because they themselves consist of four stages of the development of desire. Psychologists subconsciously felt this when they saw such states in human relationships.

Let’s say I’m with a child when I am teaching him something, and see how I play with him and beat him so that he has a desire to be for or against so he will understand his mistake. He must identify all the erroneous states and only then agree with me. In principle, this is a natural thing that does not relate to Kabbalah at all.

Question: How can a Kabbalistic touch be added inside any work of art?

Answer: This is a completely different action when Malchut becomes Keter, and the Keter of direct light becomes Malchut. That is how the reverse light works! That is, the giver and the recipient switch roles when the recipient initially turns around in such a way that proves to the giver how by receiving from him, he actually gives to him. This is the whole trick between us and the Creator. In other words, the recipient, the object, the goal wants to compensate themselves in some way in relation to their Creator.

This exists even in human relationships. Only everything depends on what kind of relationship there is between them, and then receiving and giving are purely conditional. For example, between a mother and a child, between friends, between spouses, between any events in the world, the main thing is that behind them there are feeling, understanding people who are in some kind of state of connection with each other.

Another example is that they bring me a lot of gifts and sometimes fill me up with all sorts of nonsense. And I have to accept all this and thank them because the giver feels that he is giving. He is pleased with this, because in fact he receives.

Therefore, I act out how much I need it, how pleasant it is, and so on; that is, I increase the action itself many, many times. A gift can cost a few shekels, but I make it feel like it is worth millions and that it is exactly what I wanted.

We see that neither the amount nor anything else matters here, but only the relationship between people, when the giver feels fulfilled, receives, and enjoys it. This exists around us at every moment, only it is a very small fraction of receiving and giving.

Pass Goodness to Others

254.01Question: How does a Kabbalist attract goodness for the generation?

Answer: We are in an ocean of upper light. A Kabbalist can take some portion of this light from the ocean and transfer this light to them through the channels by which they are connected with other people.

Thus, we gradually connect with each other through all five channels of NRNHY.

Question: Do we pass goodness to others by engaging in dissemination?

Answer: Yes, this is a very important action. By disseminating, you pass a part of your efforts, a part of your soul, which is called the spiritual part, to others.

How Can We Soften the Blows of Nature

738A person is created as an egoist, so one needs to be constantly driven to action, otherwise he or she will not move. Our nature is to strive for a state of absolute rest. If I have no need, I will not lift a finger.

So I am built like some kind of mechanism. Without a reason, I have no motivation to make any movement. Every movement is only for achieving greater comfort, greater fulfillment, or escaping from the lack of comfort, from suffering.

Therefore nature drives humanity with blows. They are already quite apparent and affect many people in the world, especially in developed countries. So we must try to explain to people that there is no need to oppress and kill each other; we just need to understand what to do to make the world better. In that case, we will become a kind, balancing, softening force, a buffer.

The wisdom of Kabbalah says that until a person reaches the correct understanding, the desire must go through four phases of development.

I receive the first blow and think: “No, this has nothing to do with my actions.”

The second time: “Interesting, last time I also received a blow after these same actions.”

With the third blow: “Ah, so this is a system!”

The fourth time: “I do not want to behave like this anymore! That’s it!”

Nevertheless, all those who have power try to do something: “We will fix it, we can do it!” Although after the first blow, they understand that they cannot do anything, they still cling to their seats. Then comes the second blow, even stronger, the third blow,  and then that’s it! People throw up their hands and shout: “That’s it, we do not want anything!”

Should we wait for this? No, do not wait, but we should always spread our knowledge so that people understand where the blows are coming from. When they understand this, then these blows will become clearer. At the same time, they should not be severe.

Nature does everything to reach a painful point and a painful realization so that the desire is affected by negative sensation, and alongside there is a rational, mental record; it is when two parameters come together: reason and feelings. They must be together, like Reshimo, a record from the light and from the desire. When this happens, then everything will start working normally.

Therefore, I still talk, explain, and disseminate. Do whatever it takes, just so that these blows pass more through consciousness, then they should not be so harsh.

In other words, you do not need destruction, floods, earthquakes, atomic war! It is enough for you, for example, to have the power shut off worldwide for a day or something like that, something you can survive. That’s enough! Because compared to what is forthcoming in general, that is nothing.

The Importance of the Article “The Last Generation”

526Question: In the article “The Last Generation” Baal HaSulam asks us to imagine that today we found a certain historical book describing the last generation that will live 10,000 years from now, and that this book explains all the wisdom of statesmanship as well as all the paths of the individual and society realized at the end of days.

What does this mean? Are we talking about a Kabbalistic or some other book?

Answer: Precisely about Kabbalistic books. Of course, you can look through other books, but it is a foolish idea.

Question: In which Kabbalistic book can one learn about statesmanship?

Answer: In principle, very little is written about that. But Baal HaSulam wrote such books.

Question: As far as I understand, “The Last Generation” is the only article in which he described what all the structures of the state should be like when some people are already in a corrected state, how the courts, social services, etc. will work. Why did he not publish these articles? Did he not have time? Did he not want to?

Answer: I think he thought it was too early to publish them. Only 50 to 60 years after they had been written did they reach us and we began to publish them. They came to me through his eldest son Baruch Ashlag, my teacher. He gave me the originals, which are now kept in the archive.

Question: But did you and your teacher talk about these articles, did you study them?

Answer: We did not study them, but we talked about the subject.
