Our Books At The American Library Association Annual Conference

Friends in America Report: English dissemination reaches a new level at an important American book expo The American Library Association Annual Conference running January 24 – 27, 2014.  The American Library Association (ALA), founded in 1876, is the oldest and largest library association in the world.

This is the first year we exhibited our books at the ALA event. Over 20 friends from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia are staffing our booth for the four-day event still in progress.

They report that the activity at our booth is dynamic, busy, and full of interesting conversations and filled with meeting great people, collecting contacts, and networking. Many people returned to the booth for more information.

Some of the impressions visitors to our booth shared include: “fascinating, interesting, surprising, wonderful, so timely, great collection.”

A Prayer By The Central Pillar

Dr. Michael Laitman“Introduction toThe Book of Zohar,” “The Torah and a Prayer,” Item 184: And only after he is included in all three corrections of our holy fathers will he begin to correct Divinity, from the place Jacob the patriarch had left for us: to elevate fear to the quality of exaltedness because He is great and rules over everything. Afterwards, he will enter the house of assembly and will pray his prayer. That is, he should pray and extend the upper lights in her, with the fear of exaltedness, to bring her into the end of correction. Then it is written, “And He said to Me, ‘You are My Servant, Israel, in Whom I will show My glory.’”

We begin our corrections from Abraham, from the property of Hesed, Isaac, the property of Gevura, and Jacob, the property of Tifferet. These stages are called the forefathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and then we reach the level of the sons: Netzach, Hod, and Yesod. It’s impossible to reach the corrections of the sons without correcting the levels of the forefathers first, from which we reach a prayer that fills us with the powers to take care of the sons. Thus we convey all the attributes of bestowal from HGT to NHY.

This is the work on our connection. Therefore, it is said that a person reaches a place called the house of assembly (synagogue), where he tries to be incorporated in everyone’s desires and sees to what extent he cannot do it. Then he raises a prayer.

A prayer is correct if it comes from the desire to connect. All our desires, our deficiencies, and our requests for connection come together and demand connection. This is called a prayer of many, in reply to which comes the Light that Reforms from Above and connects us. Such a connection among everyone becomes a vessel that is called a house of assembly and from it we receive a response to our prayer.

A house of assembly (congress) is not a corporeal building or a place but rather the group in which our connection and unity is fulfilled. Jacob is the middle line, the central pillar. If we reach the middle line, it means that we pray in front of the pillar, which means that we ask for the correction from our connection. This is called being a prayer leader (the phase of Jacob) that is incorporated in everyone and prays that our connection be fulfilled and that we will be incorporated in one another, dissolve into one another and be as one.

Then this place becomes a house of assembly. The connection between us is called Shechina, and we are filled by the corrections of the Light that Reforms, and the Creator is revealed in our corrected desires. We shouldn’t try to escape anywhere, instead we only should clarify this state and fulfill it more and more.

From Fundamental Particles To Adam

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Introduction to The Book of Zohar,” Item 35: In Phase One of the will to receive, called “still,” which is the initial manifestation of the will to receive in this corporeal world, there is but a collective force of movement for the whole of the still category. But no motion is apparent in its particular items. This is because the will to receive generates needs, and the needs generate sufficient movements, enough to satisfy the need.

From here it is clear to us that desire is the motivation for everything, even on the level of the still.

Question: The electron is found in constant movement. What does this say about its desire?

Answer: All of the fundamental particles exist precisely because they are found in incessant motion. Hypothetically, if they were to stop moving, they would disappear. The beginning was in the “Big Bang,” in the spark of spiritual energy that gave life to our entire universe. From there, the nature of the still, vegetative, animate, and the speaking is derived and this provides for the incessant, unlimited movement that we see. Everything is derived from that spark that erupted into the plane of this world, created “space,” and filled it.

In the foundation of matter, energy loss doesn’t exist. Its expansion is not its disappearance, for the spark remains and acts within everything. This is the reason that we cannot stop an elementary particle.

Question: So what is the difference between correction of a simple desire and a complex desire?

Answer: It’s impossible to correct a simple desire. This is because desires on the level of the still, vegetative, and animate are not ready to understand their deficiencies. The desire of the still that is found in a static state doesn’t require anything. If we move it from its place to a place where it will feel uncomfortable, it will react; let’s say it’s like a stone that rolls down a slope. But at the same time it is not acting, rather it’s nature that is activating it.

The vegetative level produces independent actions whose purpose is to supply the optimal conditions for growth. The plants already make an independent calculation but only in one direction, how to reach a particular height and realize an internal program. If this program conflicts with something, then it’s necessary to bypass the disturbance. Therefore the plants bypass what disturbs their growth.

Unlike them, the representatives of the animate level are not ready to realize their inner program if they remain in one place. They reproduce differently, live and die in a different form. All these are a great desire to receive, which is included in the three levels.

In connection with this, it’s not clear in what way the human is different from the animate level if he is concerned only for his body and his regular life. You see the animals also provide for their own corporeal existence, including the need to continue the species.

The human is called Adam (Man) if he wants to be like the Creator. In this case, “corporeal movements” will not help him. This is because the level of Adam is outside the body; it belongs to its inner spark, inherent in it since the “Big Bang.” Through this, it receives connection with Keter, with the Giver, connecting to the foundation of creation and going out to the level where the origin of our entire universe is, from there the ascent begins.

And his body remains in its place. It doesn’t belong to this. In the end, Adam will not have any sense of belonging to it.

So, Adam is the level of adherence with the Giver. He goes out from his present existence and reaches a higher level. And this is his uniqueness, for he is ready to “abandon” himself and ascend upward.

Don’t Devote Any More To This World Than It Deserves

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: I noticed that  over time, I gradually become less sensitive by the standards of this world.

Answer: You become less sensitive to some things and more sensitive to others. The main thing is to be sensitive to the connection with the friends, the group, and to be generally sensitive to being incorporated. This is what should impress you and cause an inner shivering, that should pressure you and excite you and cause you pain and joy.

You should look at all the corporeal aspects of life like food, sex, family, money, respect, and knowledge as useful and essential aspects only. I need all this in order to advance normally, on a level that “is not condemned and is not praised.” Make sure you have all the basic necessities and use this world according to your needs, but be above it in your thoughts and your intentions. Don’t be overenthusiastic or ascetic. Don’t regret what happens to you in this world. Don’t devote to this world any more than it deserves. On the corporeal level, you should use it rationally, and in sensation, you yearn for connection with the Creator through the group.

The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from Wired): “Now, thanks to new observation technologies, powerful software, and statistical methods, the mechanics of collectives are being revealed. Indeed, enough physicists, biologists, and engineers have gotten involved that the science itself seems to be hitting a density-dependent shift. Without obvious leaders or an overarching plan, this collective of the collective-obsessed is finding that the rules that produce majestic cohesion out of local jostling turn up in everything from neurons to human beings. Behavior that seems impossibly complex can have disarmingly simple foundations. And the rules may explain everything from how cancer spreads to how the brain works and how armadas of robot-driven cars might someday navigate highways. The way individuals work together may actually be more important than the way they work alone. Aristotle first posited that the whole could be more than the sum of its parts.”

My Comment: The concept of the universality of any unity in which each ceases to feel himself but feels the collective whole is not new. Only it slips away from us who look at everything through our narrow egoism. Today, nature tells us the way to integrality because it is manifested so before us.

“The unification of pieces into a coherent whole creates a special power and property that does not exist in a simple sum of them because they are united above and overcoming their egoism.

Becoming Israel

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” 28:15 – 21: You shall make a  breastplate of decision, worked into a design; make it in the style of the ephod: make it of gold, of blue, of purple, and crimson yarns, and of fine twisted linen. …

Set it in mounted stones, in four rows of stones. The first row shall be a row of carnelian, chrysolite, and emerald; the second row: a turquoise, a sapphire, and an amethyst; the third row: a jacinth, an agate, and a crystal; and the fourth row: a beryl, a lapis lazuli, and a jasper. They shall be framed with gold in their mountings. The stones shall correspond [in number] to the names of the sons of Israel; twelve corresponding to their names. They shall be engraved like seals, each with its name, for the twelve tribes.

Twelve stones represent all the desires of the one general soul and the real work because Moses, Aaron, and Aaron’s sons are the link between the Creator and the people through the tens, hundreds, and thousands, heads of tribes and leaders. The breastplate (chosen) refers to the way they should follow and be connected. It’s all the egoistic desires that already operate. Moses and Aaron symbolize the head that thinks, instructs, and decides, while the twelve tribes are the executive part. The choshen provides the connection between the part of the head and the executive part.

On the one hand, the twelve tribes are represented by different stones, each tribe according to its character, its correction, and its form. On the other hand, they are all connected as one unique whole, tightly arranged together in a certain order as one breastplate on Aaron’s chest.

Aaron isn’t just a priest, but the great priest, stemming from the word “saint,” which means that he only has the spirit of love and bestowal. His connection with the twelve tribes is necessary so that they will totally connect to him and under his guidance will attain the same state. The Torah tells us how to reach the state in which everything becomes one whole called Israel, Yashar-El (straight to the Creator).

A Temple That Is Built In The Heart

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Are the objects and the buildings mentioned in the Torah related to spiritual forces in any way?

Answer: Of course. But a person who does not understand and who isn’t in the spiritual world cannot physically play with them. He will not know how!

So only the wise, which means those who are on a spiritual level, can draw all this from their spiritual level, knowing every movement they make: how to process things and how to do them. But if they are not on a spiritual level they cannot even depict all this on paper.

Some call it building the third Temple, but how should they build it, what should they build? You don’t even know how to start. It has to live in you. You should understand exactly how it should be done, without drawings!

Like Ramchal, the drawings should be inside you, including all the details: the stones, the wood, etc. You cannot instruct anyone since everyone should understand you internally. There has to be a team in which there is the Temple that simply embodies its external form, its imprint.

On the whole there is no need for an external display if we come to the general end of correction so that everything will live in us and ascend from the worlds of BYA to the world of Atzilut then there is no need to embody anything in stone. The third Temple is the spiritual end of correction that requires an embodiment in the heart and not in stone.
