Are We In for a Conspiracy of Machines?

204In the News (CNN.com):Elon Musk warned in a new interview that artificial intelligence could lead to ‘civilization destruction,’ even as he remains deeply involved in the growth of AI through his many companies, including a rumored new venture.

“’AI is more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production, in the sense that it is, it has the potential — however small one may regard that probability, but it is non-trivial — it has the potential of civilization destruction,’ …

“Musk said Monday night he supports government regulation into AI… . Once AI ‘may be in control,’ it could be too late to place regulations, Musk said.

“’A regulatory agency needs to start with a group that initially seeks insight into AI, then solicits opinion from industry, and then has proposed rule-making,’ Musk said.”

Question: What do you think about it?

Answer: He deals with it. Obviously, we should at least listen to him.

Question: Do you think it is possible that a machine would suddenly turn against a human?

Answer: Of course. We may not even feel it, but it will be perhaps directed against us.

Question: So, do you think there could be a conspiracy of machines?

Answer: Not in such a crude form as a “conspiracy of machines.” It is hard to point to anything that we invented that was only positive.

Question: Because we invented it?

Answer: Yes, we did. And we always turn it to the negative side.

Question: You do not find much positive in a human, do you?

Answer: Man is an egoist. I do not find anything positive in it at all. We see in ourselves how uncontrollable we are. And artificial intelligence will also eventually be uncontrollable. Whatever man invents, it is still for his harm.

Question: What can be done and how can we make man invent something for good? In order to squeeze something positive out of us, what needs to be done?

Answer: There will always be something negative about it. Always. Look at what humanity is doing to itself.

Comment: Yes. It goes little by little…

My Response: To self-destruction.

Question: But it will not come to it, right? It will not happen?

Answer: I don’t know if it will come to it. It seems to me that there is a possibility of it, and a big possibility that we can begin to self-destruct.

Question: Yes, but can we rely on the upper force to somehow bring us to our senses? You always talk about upper management.

Answer: The upper force is not ultimately the higher intelligence that we mean. The higher power is something that may be above our egoism, and we have absolutely no contact with it. We have no connection with what is higher than our egoism.

Question: And before this abyss that is right in front of it, can we suddenly slow down and realize that we must rise above egoism, that it was it that brought us to this?

Answer: How can we know this?

Comment: It will come from above somehow. There is no other way, you say.

My Response: I have no idea.

Comment: You don’t want to give us a small chance.

My Response: I would not give man a chance.

Comment: After all, it is God’s creation.

My Response: No, no, we are not God’s creatures, and we cannot hope that the Creator will always protect us and always somehow separate us. I personally do not hope so.

Of course, He is ultimately good that does good. But maybe we achieve this good through huge, huge failures, suffering, and wars.

Comment: We see that this is indeed the case.

My Response: But that is not all. What the Bible says and so on could be much worse.

Question: But the reason that things could be worse, maybe it will still somehow enter us?

Answer: No, we see that this does not calm the human.

Question: I am always trying to find some way out of this situation from you. And you say that a human is still a negative system?

Answer: Yes, of course. Man is a negative system, and is constantly moving toward self-destruction, and before that, practically nothing can stop him.

Question: Can we attract positive things? We can at some point, right?

Answer: We hope so.

Comment: Another idea about artificial intelligence is that it will lead to humanity not having to work.  Then the main question will be the search for the meaning of life. That is, we will come to the meaning of life from boredom, from the fact that we will not have a job.

My Response: Is the meaning of life now to work?

Comment: Yes, it looks like it, correct. 🙂

My Response: It is not clear: now the meaning of life is to work, and then the meaning of life will be not to work.

Question: So you do not accept this logical connection?

Answer: No.

Question: Are you saying that we need to look for the meaning of life now?

Answer: We must develop in such a way as to understand that work itself also has meaning. And we definitely need to make our work as high as possible, that is, one that would raise man, turn him into a reasonable human. It is true.

Comment: In principle, work to earn money, work to support the family…

My Response: No, no. It is all going to go away soon.

Question: And if, let’s say, the work in which I had the meaning of life ends. How do I not lose the meaning of life with this job ending?

Answer: When you feel that you do not need to work in order to live, then you have the opportunity for another goal in order to live.

Question: So if I grasp the goal, then any changes taking place at a lower level are no longer important. I do not work or I do work, it does not matter. The main thing is to grasp the goal. What is it about?

Answer: I think that this work will be so that we rise all the time and get closer to the Creator in our unity.
Our job will be in how much each of us will refine ourselves every day to rise above ourselves.

Live in a Positive Way

597.02Question: When a lack of confidence and hope appears in the ten, can such properties as envy, vanity, and honor return it to the state of the spirit of life?

Answer: Of course. If you think about the state you want to experience in the ten, try to create it, and you will see it is possible. By imagining a good future, you will thus attract it to yourself.

Question: What should we focus on when we are envious or jealous? Do negative qualities ensure spiritual growth?

Answer: No, it does not increase spiritual growth. Envy with good envy and it will help you rise. And when you rise with your friends, then you will help them.

In any case, try to live with those positive feelings that you want to use. Start feeling them more, and then you will understand what you can use and cannot.

“Grieving Parents Call to Embrace Unity in the Face of Loss and Tragedy” (Times of Israel)

Michael Laitman on the Times of Israel: “Grieving Parents Call to Embrace Unity in the Face of Loss and Tragedy

“Yehonatan, my beloved son, we were merited to be your parents. You were such a gentle, emotional and believing person, without an ounce of rough attitude or cynicism,” echoed the father, Hagai Lober, of Staff Sgt. (res.) Elisha Yehonatan Lober, who lost his life fighting to defend Israel in the battles in southern Gaza.

“Before Simchat Torah we all went through a difficult time. We felt that our beloved nation was falling apart. The damned enemies came and reminded us that we are one nation and forced us to speak to each other and fight side by side. […] We request of the media and of every one of our nation please, one day of unity to uplift his soul, please don’t write of broadcast anything divisive, please, speak good [of others], find the good of the decision makers and of our amazing people who Yehonatan was proud to fight for.”

That such words were stated by grieving parents in the circumstances of losing their son indeed exemplifies a transcendence of the instinctive human capacity. They thus share a similar characteristic to sacred words, as if they emanate from the same field beyond the human egoistic forces, where we all unite as a single desire.

The bereaved parents’ focus on the benefit of society while feeling the anguish of losing their son showcases their greatness. In states where many people would naturally wish to have time for themselves, and in situations where it is possible to seek blame and redemption for what happened to their son, they instead come out with no less than a spiritual message: a calling for the unity of the people.

In order not to disregard the parents’ pleas, we should embrace their sentiments and try to internalize their deep emotions. By doing so, we can shatter the walls of division that stand between us, experience a significant transformation, live in unity, love, a readiness to forgive one another, and a mutual yearning to come out of ourselves for the greater good of humanity.

With a Staff in Hand

232.05Question: A person leans on a staff when walking. What is spiritual support?

Answer: It is faith above reason. The staff symbolizes this quality. Everyone must annul themselves before the others to realize it in the ten. Then it is considered walking forward with a staff in his hand.

You must correct your desires from reception to bestowal to receive faith above reason. This is only possible in a group because one person cannot do it.

Question: How can you be in faith above reason, in complete faith in dissemination?

Answer: Ignore the failures and thank the Creator for giving you the opportunity to disseminate. In our world, you are His representatives.

Questions about Spiritual Work—53

268_03Question: Why should receiving the Torah happen at the top of the mountain?

Answer: “Mountain” (Har) comes from the word “Hirhurim” –  doubts. Doubts constantly fill a person on the spiritual path, but despite them, he still goes forward and climbs the mountain, although it is not easy.

Question: What happens to a person when he receives the Torah?

Answer: He reveals the Creator, is filled with the upper light, and feels himself in the upper world. At the same time, our world does not disappear anywhere. It is just that a person feels like he exists in both worlds.

Question: What should we do when hatred appears between friends?

Answer: We all must attack this hatred together and try to remove it by any means: tear it up, trample it down, burn it.

Question: If a person studies the Torah with an open heart but without a calculation of intention, does he receive its light?

Answer: He receives it. In any case, the study of the Torah attracts the upper light to us: small or big, leading him forward or not, it gives some light.

Question: What is our mistake on the path when we walk, make efforts, and the Torah suddenly becomes the potion of death instead of the elixir of life?

Answer: This happens because you are striving for egoistic fulfillment. But you still keep making efforts, and eventually, the light of the Torah will be replaced by the light of purification, and you will know everything.

Prepare the Heart for Feeling the Creator

237Question: It is said that our effort is the work of the Torah. What does this mean? Is this internal work or physical work?

Answer: You will not help yourself or others with your physical work, only with your heart.

To the extent that you want to connect with your friends in your heart, you prepare your heart for feeling the Creator and revealing His light in the common Kli, in the common desire—yours and your friends.

Question: Why is it that only a small number of people are awarded with revealing a point in the heart?

Answer: There is probably no need for more.

When we connect with each other, we will be able to influence the whole world, and the world will feel how much it needs this knowledge and will begin to move toward everyone. Then, the light will fill us to the extent of our collective desire.

Coming Closer to Each Other Is the New World Order

275Question: You said that we should organize ourselves so that our connection defines the new world order. How do you see this, and how should we organize ourselves so that our connection defines it?

Answer: Every day every person on Earth should feel that he is entering into a new relationship with everyone, and that through this new relationship, he treats the Creator differently. In this way, he ascends the degrees of spiritual elevation.

Question: What is the Creator for all the people on Earth?

Answer: The upper force.

Question: What kind of relationship should every person on Earth enter into with everyone daily?

Answer: Coming closer to each other.

Give Birth to a New Humanity

944The ninth commandment is to pardon the poor and give them prey. It is written, “Let us ‎make man in our image, after our likeness.” (Introduction of The Book of Zohar, “The Commandments of the Torah”).

We must help all people who perhaps do not understand, are not aware, and are not able to fulfill the commandment of love for each other. We must attract them to us and perform spiritual actions together with them.

Question: What is the connection between the instruction to help the poor, and the phrase, “Let us create man in our image and likeness”?

Answer: By poor we mean a person who does not yet have the awareness and strength to influence everyone in a good way. We need to give an example and help such a person in spiritual work.

With the phrase, “let us create a man in our image and likeness,” the Creator tells us that in this way we should come into contact with Him and give birth to a new humanity that would be in harmony and love and exist in one single desire. After all, the Creator is the quality of bestowal and love.
