Opening Pandora’s Box

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: You say that leprosy is the ego that emerges and cannot be corrected. Can it infect others with the disease?

Answer: Yes. It must be suppressed and isolated until a person has the powers to correct it.

When I ascend spiritually to the level of the priest, I can examine whether my desires are correct or not. It isn’t easy. First I have to be objective, which means exiting myself. Second, I must have the attributes of Tzimtzum (restriction), which means ascending above myself, and starting to study to what extent I can objectively discover my essence a little.

This is Pandora’s Box and when I open it the scariest, lowest, most horrifying, filthiest desires come out of there. Sometimes they may seem clean and right, but if I delve deeper into them, I see that underneath there is a concealed intention to harm others.

Comment: I always find this surprising and painful…

Answer: It depends on how you do it. You should prepare yourself for it, in order to examine everything gladly afterwards, since this leads you to a bright future, which means to an analysis that will free you of all the pain.

So the main thing is to first feel that you are ill. It depends on the environment you are in. If you enter the right environment, it will influence you in a way that you will begin to feel that there is something wrong with you. By examining yourself with regard to the goal described in Kabbalah books, you begin to feel the first new sensations: “Where am I wrong? Why don’t I live in accordance to the upper goal?”

Wisdom Doesn’t Require Valor

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: It says that a person who has leprosy has to be brought to the priest. He doesn’t come to the priest by himself, but is brought to him.

Answer: A person who has leprosy will never reach the level of the priest himself. He is so deeply immersed in his ego, cooking in it, that the awakening to this is cut off in him. He becomes food for his own ego, thus consuming the skin of his body.

Question: I have heard that people with leprosy do not feel that they are sick; they are even proud of it.

Answer: All the contagious human infections make people feel proud in some way since the ego wants to compensate for itself. A person wants to show that he is special in some way on every level. This type of compensation stems from internal defeatism.

It is revealed so strongly in a person that it turns a deficiency into valor. People hold pride parades and other activities thus validating it in their own eyes.

A normal person who is more or less balanced internally doesn’t need to prove anything to himself. Wisdom dwells quietly in a person who is focused on spiritual attainment and has no need for any commotion or mess.

An Upper Doctor

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If we are all connected by one integral system, incorporated in one another, then can my illness be clarified in my own prison?

Answer: Of course, we are all ill for someone, but we just don’t know for who, why and how.

What is more, if your leg hurts, let’s disconnect it from the head that is the center of feeling the pain and you will not feel the pain anymore, even if your leg is cut off. Everything is felt in the head, not in the other parts of the body.

A person is never ill for himself, he may feel a pain in his body, but actually this is how the feeling of the bad connection between him and others is revealed.

Question: The Torah says that in such cases a person should turn to the priest. If I have a wound, I shouldn’t go to the doctor but to the priest.

Answer: The priest looks at me and says: “what have you violated my friend? Something is wrong here!”

This means that he sees some imbalance. It is like allopathy, not folk medicine but natural medicine that is energetically closed in its thought and structure according to the inner mutual connection and the flow of forces. A human body includes the whole universe in it.

A real healer (a priest) understands all that. A priest is the uppermost level of a person’s development, and so he can see all the discrepancies in a person and identify what level they are on and how to heal them.

The healing begins by isolating the patient from others because it is impossible to correct his connection with the rest of the camp, with the rest of the group of people if he is in such a poor, low condition.

Seven days, Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, and Yesod, is the total disconnection from people during which the isolated area is corrected by the Masach (screen), a force. Then he can go back to the right connection with others. This is how the root of the illness is removed and everything is healed.

This is the only way to heal all the problems from the smallest, to the essence, which are a result of nerves. That’s all there is. Correct the mutual relations between people and you will see that all the illnesses will totally disappear on their own! This repeats on all the levels, some on the level of the nerves, and some enter the blood system, some the lymph system, etc. until the whole body is destroyed.

All this is the reflection, the replica of the external mutual relations. Science is already speaking about this.

Balance Is A Guarantee For Health, Longevity And Success

Dr. Michael LaitmanLeviticus, the section “Tazria”, 13:1-3: And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: “When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes in the skin of his flesh the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests. And the priest shall look upon the plague in the skin of the flesh; and if the hair in the plague be turned white, and the appearance of the plague be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is the plague of leprosy; and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.”

The discovery of the next level requires a rejection of those desires that we cannot correct. And they leave us in the form of slag: plague, leprosy, and all that is spilled out. In general, knowledgeable doctors understand that everything that is shed from the body of a person is for his own good and it must be expelled. But most doctors simply heal people.

Comment: But this is talking about a Cohen (priest) here, not a doctor.

Answer: A Cohen is a doctor at the highest level.

All diseases appear from a violation of the animal systems when we cannot hold onto the right balance. For balance constitutes a guarantee for health, for longevity, for success on all levels: moral, material, physical, traditional, familial, cultural, and social.

Only one force exists in creation, and we must work by regarding it with balance on all of our levels. But if the levels of the still, vegetative, and animate are found in balance with it, because they are guided by it instinctively, the level of man is not. In his departure from balance, man violates the balance of all the rest of the parts of nature.

This happens not only because he interacts with them physically, but simply because he is found with them in one single integral system. Even our thoughts and emotions and our mutual relationships influence the environment that surrounds us.

So it follows, whether we want it or not, each one of us and all of us together are responsible for all of nature. Essentially all are together, because our incompatibility causes incompatibility between humanity and all of that nature that surrounds us like an envelope. The main thing is that this is an incompatibility with that power that manages both nature and us.

But this power manages us with particular patience, giving us some kind of freedom, so that in the framework of this freedom we determine our balance with it, and we find the homeostatic formula in any of our states. Only in this way do we balance nature as well as all of us in relation to it.

To the degree that balance is attained, this external force begins to be felt within us and among us and we rise to the next level of development called Adam, meaning, Domeh (similar) to the only power of nature, which is called Creator.

Attainment That Stems From Oppositeness

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Book of Zohar, “Ki Tazria” (When a Woman Delivers), Item 105: “As light excels over darkness.” The benefit of the light comes only out of the darkness. The correction of the white is black, for without the black, the white would be pointless. And because there is black, the white is elevated and respected. It is like sweet and bitter. A person cannot know the taste of sweetness before he has tasted bitterness. Thus, what makes it sweet is the bitter.

In things where there are opposites, the one reveals the other, such as in white and black, light and darkness, sick and healthy.

Darkness is the embodiment of all the negativity that we attain in life: insecurity, fear, stinginess, pride, and contempt. Why did the Creator create darkness as the cruelest, dirtiest form that is opposite from Him? It is actually in order to attain the Light.

We, the created beings can determine everything only by oppositeness. The Creator is only one infinite Light. There are no two opposite attributes in Him in order to feel, to prefer, and to learn about one from the other. We have to understand that there cannot be one attribute without the other.

When we ascend we do so along the right and the left lines, on two legs, by opposite attributes, by opposite feelings, and the more Light there is, the more it is felt in contrast to greater darkness. This happens all the time, everywhere, in everything that we feel, think and in every decision that we make.

A person has to have great patience in advance in order to be able to go through all this. But it isn’t easy to do so because the spiritual path is the path of purification from the ego and is based on an inner struggle.

Only the right support of the environment and its constant strengthening can keep a person above the water while he is actually no one and nothing. When ten zeros come together and understand that none of them are worth anything but together they do their best to help one another, the Upper Light descends upon them and turns them into heroes.

Question: What is the psychology of a person’s inner movement?

Answer: The pleasure one receives is not a masochistic pleasure. It is a result of one’s self-correction.

Imagine ten people who cannot help one another in any way but who are still trying to do so with all their might. This brings a great upper force to descend upon them since each of them is fighting his ego in order to help the others. The result is circular mutual guarantee and the upper force connects, empowers, and raises them to the next level.

Following Instructions Of The Torah

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the difference between the balance in relationships between people and the balance of each one with nature?

Answer: It is one and the same because the system within which we exist is integral. We all are included in one another in all possible variations: with the still, vegetative, and animal natures, and among ourselves. This enormous multi-level system is so interdependent and multilayered that we cannot grasp it on our own.

The only thing we can do is to work with it trying to be integrally interconnected through correct directions that the Torah gives us (Torah is from the word “Ora’a” –  “instructions” or “guide”). By following its guidance, we will begin to feel how this system is correctly influencing us and we influence it, and a mutual correspondence between us and the Creator appears.

In other words, in our relationships, a sense of eternity, perfection, and harmony appears, and we, by balancing our relationships with each other and the nature around us, uncover the possibility for the revelation of unity, which is called the Creator.

The Creator does not exist outside our connection. This is why it is said not to create an image for yourself because the Creator does not have a guise.

The Clean Ecology Of The Spiritual World

Dr. Michael Laitman“…if a woman has conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days.” (Torah, Parshah Tazria – Leviticus 12:2)

“Born a man child” means giving a birth to the property of bestowal, a powerful quality that works only for the sake of love and giving.

“She shall be unclean seven days,” is the properties that cannot be turned into bestowal or love during the childbirth process are called “seven days” or “seven Sefirot.” For this period of time, one has to detach from one’s work and one’s prior conditions because there is a part inside the desire that is shaped to bestow and another part that turns into waste.

But it is not just waste; rather, they are the properties that cannot be used for the sake of bestowal. However, they can be corrected at the next level.

It is similar to the digestion of kosher animals when they swallow and regurgitate over and over again. This is an example of how one’s nature can be used for spiritual purposes.

Question: During the childbirth process on this material plane, a woman first releases water, then a baby is born, and afterward the placenta is separated and then blood comes out. Are all of them just “waste” that wasn’t utilized by the child?

Answer: This is a special type of connection between the upper and lower organisms, between the higher and lower levels.

In this world, the placenta is removed from the mother’s body and then they either throw it away or use it for medical purposes. Conversely, in spirituality these things worked to turn into lower level systems. All intermediary systems that worked between the mother’s body and the child, as well as everything that ever formed or worked for the child’s sake, leaves the mother’s body and descends to lower systems since the child doesn’t need them anymore. At this point, the baby obtains additional desires and receives a spiritual gene; thus, the child elevates.

Nothing is ever wasted in spirituality. It is a clean ecology! It just cannot be any other way. If the Creator made a desire that is absolutely equal to the Light, but qualitatively is completely opposite to It; they need each other to fully implement. Therefore, nothing ever vanishes in spirituality; everything is fully recyclable.

In materiality, the entire bodily waste that is produced by our organism can be either recycled or buried. Really nothing needs to be buried. Kabbalah explains what waste is. Particularly, Baal HaSulam wrote several articles that are yet unpublished and that describe the nature of the waste that is produced by our bodies and determines the way they should be re-used in the life circle. The most interesting thing is that there are numerous kinds of “waste”, such as sweat, hair, saliva, tears, etc. They form a special “sphere” around our bodies.

There Is Nothing To Envy

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why do we naturally want to receive the Torah as a kind of good, which we are “supposed” to receive?

Answer: And who said that the Torah, the method of correction, is perceived as good?

It is said: “I created the evil inclination, and I made the Torah as its spice.” The Creator created, on the one hand, evil, and on the other hand, a “spice,” against it, the force of correction. But what good is in it? What is good if I have a damaged car that needs to be fixed?

Look at the world. Who envies the Jewish people because they received the Torah? Except the people who are attracted to the purpose of creation, to correction, others can bring a variety of definitions of the Torah, and no one would name the Light that Reforms. No one will say that the essence of the Torah is the correction of evil in oneself and that we need to immerse ourselves in this process.

Our definition of the Torah as the Light that Reforms does not seem to bode well. We are talking about the force of correction which confronts all the evil that should be revealed in us. Revelation of evil is always very unpleasant, uncomfortable, and not gentle. This is something terrible: a grave illness and a cure for it.

It is no coincidence that children live through some diseases that will ensure their continued immunity. We need to experience every state on the path, discovering evil in each, suffering from it, and then correcting it.

So, who needs this? In the correct definition of this word, the term “Israel” promises sweet life to no one. If you look at the history of the Jewish people, then there is nothing to envy. Only a handful of people in the world are attached to Israel to share its fate. Perhaps they may have inherited their attraction from the Reshimot (reminiscences) of the lost tribes.

It is difficult to expect a mass influx there where we are working against egoism.

Conception Of The Soul

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Ki Tazria), 12:1-12:2: And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a woman conceives and gives birth to a male, she will be unclean for seven days; as [in] the days of her menstrual flow, she shall be unclean.'”

The section Ki Tazria begins with the story of man and doesn’t tell us about any animals or plants. Man (Adam) is a desire that we can correct to resemble the Creator. Although at first he is egoistic in all his aspirations, motives, thoughts, and actions, in the corrected state, he has to be fully focused on love and bestowal for others.

We have to constantly work on the desires that are invoked in us and correct them with the help of the Upper Light. Then to the extent that we resemble the Creator, He is revealed to us.

The desire is called female since the next level develops from it. “If a woman conceives” means that the desire is focused on working with the inclination of love and bestowal.

First, we have to examine it and to understand whether it is suitable for our advancement towards resembling the Creator and what the elements of the right advancement in this body should be, which means, in this main desire so that its intentions will be changed into love and bestowal. If our advancement is wrong, it is better to stop it and to remain on the previous level.

Thus Tazria means that you shouldn’t simply participate in the process of the conception of the soul, but rather understand how it grows in you and of what attributes it is made. This is called conception.

Get Rid Of Illusions

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: I have often heard the friends say: “I will do my best, and if I don’t achieve anything in this life, at least I will follow this path.” Is this the right approach or not? Or should a person say that: “I will attain spirituality in this life !”?

Answer: In this life means on this level. After all, whatever we don’t feel seems to be beyond this life. It also exists, but in another dimension.

Suppose I live in a body and feel my life through it. However, if I work on myself, I bring myself to a state in which I begin to experience additional feelings in life: new attributes, new desires, and new relations on a higher level; the attributes of bestowal  are due to my connection with others. These attributes have nothing to do with my initial desire (not the body but the desire).

Therefore, I simply fulfill myself on the next level by making myself a more sublime creature. If I can do that, the desires of my current level gradually change into more sublime desires.

Why were we given a body that actually has nothing to do with our desires? After all, we could have desires that are external to our body and fulfill them outside the body.

Comment: It is difficult to picture that.

Answer: Why? Is it difficult for you to imagine that I enjoy a cup of coffee without preparing it, pouring it into a cup, and then pouring it down my throat, and feeling some pleasure in it? It is all about sensors, which are attached external factors! It isn’t the drink.

We can insert electrodes into the brain or put on a helmet with electrodes and feel the same sensations. So where am I actually?

The point is that we are impressed by different things, that there are forces that manage us and it seems that we actually move our hands, and speak to one another, but in fact it isn’t so. The matter, that we feel, doesn’t really exist.

Therefore, our first task is to get rid of this illusion and  rise above it. Then our movements will be rational and not silly like a baby who jerks his hands and legs in every direction and cannot control them.

We will begin to work directly with the forces that invoke us and will know how to respond to them. We will be in bilateral relations with them and will see the goal.
