Tastes Of The Torah

Dr. Michael LaitmanComment: You once compared a book about the attributes of the Light to a book of recipes for the healthy tasty food.

Answer: Yes, indeed it is so, since it is about the tastes of the Torah. But in order to taste it, one has to feel it.

I drool when I look at what a cook prepares! In the Torah, however, I read about a lamb being slaughtered, skinned, and cut etc. so what of it?! I have no feeling that matches the description of these spiritual actions.

While reading, I have to taste and feel the matching desires and attributes; how they operate in me, what I reject, and what I am attracted to. I have to feel them because these are the same desires and intentions that I live with and are the most important for me at any given moment. This is either getting closer to the real upper source on which everything depends or drawing away from it.

This means that here I work with more prominent attributes, but they are described in the Torah in words and definitions that are dead and far from the lexicon that describes feelings. There is nothing we can do since the language of the Torah operates accurately according to the connection between the roots and their branches.

What will I taste if I take the cedars of Lebanon, birch, or a scarlet coil of rope? These things are tasteless and I don’t understand what they refer to.

Only when a person discovers these feelings inside him and when they storm in him while reading the Torah will the concealed become revealed.

Layer by Layer Purification of Desire

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Tazria), 13:13-13:14: Then the Cohen shall look [at it]. And, behold! the leprosy has covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce [the person with] the lesion clean. He has turned completely white; he is clean.…

This portion describes an egoistic distortion that replaces a complete correction. Even though a person behaves correctly and normally, he still cannot be a full member of the society that works only for the sake of bestowal.

The Torah speaks of a gradual correction of the society and bringing everybody to mutual bestowal and love in which we later reveal the Creator.

All layers of the desire have to be clean, and the skin has to be cleaner than th other organs because it is the most superficial layer and is the hardest to be corrected. That’s why dermatological diseases cannot be cured in this world.

Egoism consists of five parts that allegorically correspond to the brain, bones, ligaments, flesh, and skin. These five parts have to be corrected by exerting from inside out. At each level, this process becomes harder but better and each layer bears a higher quality.

Question: I noticed that internal abnormalities in my organism do not cause discomfort in me, whereas various skin irritations can be very embarrassing. How can you explain it?

Answer: Internal systems and organs can be more or less successfully cured. They maintain a deeper interaction between each other. Their malfunction can be discovered faster and fixed more easily. All internal problems are released in the form of toxins that show on the skin. If physicians knew how to diagnose illnesses according to skin conditions, they would be able to define all sorts of internal ailments.

Comment: I feel very embarrassed when I deal with other people if, let’s say, I have an ulcer on my hand. I feel extremely self-conscious when I have to shake hands with others at this time.

Answer: It’s because you deal with others through the external part of your egoism. The layers that are more internal are hidden from others.

Process Of Self-Scrutiny

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Tazria),“13:12-13:14: And if the leprosy has spread over the skin, whereby the leprosy covers all the skin of the [person with the] lesion, from his head to his feet, wherever the eyes of the Cohen can see it, then the Cohen shall look [at it]. And, behold! the leprosy has covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce [the person with] the lesion clean. He has turned completely white; he is clean. But on the day that live flesh appears in it, he shall become unclean.”

“…leprosy has spread over the kin, whereby the leprosy covers all the skin…” signifies that there is an ongoing process of self-scrutiny when a person who has already attained the level of Cohen feels as if he is sick with leprosy. If it applies to one’s current layer of egoism, it can be corrected by isolating one from the others.

If “live flesh appears,” i.e., when the next degree of egoism shows up, then an internal problem appears and involves the deeper, inner layers of egoism. At this point, the problem becomes incurable.

It’s interesting that on one hand, a person attains the level of Cohen, but on the other hand, he manages to detect these conditions only because of the high level he has achieved.

Question: How can one attain the level of Cohen if one deals with these kind of problems?

Answer: The thing is that these issues are not apparent. The ego unveils itself gradually. Particularly, at the Cohen level, one starts sensing “leprosy.” Previously, when these conditions were hidden, one seemed clean.

The Torah describes Moses who hid his hands and when he pulled them out they were covered with leprosy.

“Hands” denote receiving desires. The more we advance, the bigger the desires that are revealed to us. Inside, we are filled with “worms” although on the outside it doesn’t show and nobody can see it. Externally, everything looks good.

Thus, when we continue ascending to the levels of Israel, Levites, and Cohen, we start noticing changes that our ego undergoes.

Small Portions Of Light – The Force That Revives The Spirit

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why is it that when you begin to talk about the inclination towards love and bestowal the listener is fascinated?

Answer: It is because there are small portions of Light in our world with regard to this. If a person focuses on their frequency, he begins to feel them and is attracted to them. But before that he needs some psychological exercises that will eventually help him feel the Light.

Small portions of Light have a healing effect on a person and so he wants to feel the same way personally and in the family because there is nothing better for the body and the soul than the attribute of love and bestowal. By that a person gets rid of all the flaws. If we could teach people who have cancer about love and bestowal, we would discover that this is the medicine for them.

Comment: This is why I am a great admirer of this program that gives people small portions of Light. Although you repeat the words love and bestowal many times, it is as if a person hears it anew each time. It is a paradox that always amazes me. Although I have been hearing this for many years, I always have the feeling of something new.

Answer: This is mainly felt by people who really understand that there is nothing to look for anywhere else. This is where a special natural attribute is revealed.

When You Feel No Taste In Spirituality…

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Metzora), 14:8: “The person being cleansed shall then immerse his garments, shave off all his hair, and immerse [himself] in water, and become clean. After this, he may enter the camp, but he shall remain outside his tent for seven days.”

This speaks about methods of purifying the desires by gradually performing more internal work.

The hair (Se’arot) symbolizes a person’s unfulfilled desires and therefore stem from the Hebrew word “Sauer” (stormy), that is, a person feels an inner storm with the inability to fulfill himself with bestowal.

Shaving off one’s hair means getting rid of these desires and agreeing not to use them. In fact these are the greatest desires and the strongest impulses a person has.

The Torah, “Leviticus” (Metzora), 14:9: “And it shall be, on the seventh day, that he shall shave off all his hair: [that of] his head, his beard, his eyebrows; indeed, all his hair he shall shave off. He shall then immerse his garments and immerse his flesh in water, thus becoming clean.”

The seven days of purification help a person totally get rid of the previous level on which his egoistic impulses were revealed.

He corrects the egoistic desires that are left for seven days (seven Sefirot) and when he purifies himself of them he is ready for bestowal.

Comment: We usually go over the Torah portion in greater detail…

Answer: If we were in spiritual attainment, we could speak about it a lot. There are for example, endless hours about food on TV on all the channels. These are the most popular shows…

I remember when the book About Tasty Healthy Food was published by Stalin. People were hungry and this book with beautiful elegant  pictures of different dishes was published; people bought it and it filled them a bit. It was a serious public relations move campaign way before the times of Hollywood and America with its advertising campaigns. Psychologically it worked 150%.

I saw something similar to that not long ago in the U.S. when I visited our publisher. His wife is of Russian origin and she deals with diamonds. They published a book about diamonds that had an unprecedented demand in the U.S. and Canada, especially in places where no one had ever seen such diamonds.

People who don’t have them enjoy the feeling of seeing them: how everything glitters and changes colors, and how they are polished etc. For them it is like having all that wealth. It is a great psychological stunt.

In other words, we can speak endlessly about food and diamonds because we feel a taste in it, we want it, and we know what it is. See how many dishes can be prepared from the same materials. People have different tastes and different feelings, whereas when it comes to spirituality they feel no taste for the time being.

Desires That Enhance Spirituality

Dr. Michael Laitman“But if it is a white discoloration on the skin of his body, which does not appear to be deeper than the skin and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest shall isolate the affected person for seven days.” (The Torah, Leviticus, Tazri’a, 13:04)

“Hair” signifies the exit of excesses that the body wants to rid itself of through the skin. By internally digesting all egoistic levels, one corrects these desires, thus continues growing and functioning.

Anything that is not functional in the body leaves it naturally. In spirituality, there also exists a similar phenomenon that is “positioned” right after the very last egoistic level of desires—the skin. Going beyond this level is carried out in the form of excess desires that at the human level are represented as hair.

However, humans have significantly less hair than animals since a human being is able to “digest” more egoistic desires and re-direct them towards bestowal and love.

On the other hand, there is not even a millimeter on our body that is not covered by hair. And so Se’arot (hair) stand for a person’s huge desires that yet have to be oriented towards correction, but so far they have not been re-directed properly.

If one’s desires are correct, they cascade from one’s head in the form of side curls, beard, etc. and properly wrap a person. Related to this is the concept of “hermit” (Nazir) who never cuts his hair.

Women, on the contrary, attract men with their hair because in spirituality a woman draws a man by her desires to bestow, to spiritual love.

Men lack these kinds of desires and women attract them by letting men take their desires, correct them, and thus rise. Here you can see interesting correlations, even in how through the process of development mankind changed hairstyles keeping it within a cover.

A religious woman always covers her hair since she doesn’t let strangers take her desires. She is only allowed to reveal her hair in front of her husband.

Corrections In Society And Outside It

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Leviticus 13: 4-6: And if the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and the appearance thereof be not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white, then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague seven days.

And the priest shall look on him the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague stay in its appearance, and the plague be not spread in the skin, then the priest shall shut him up seven days more.

And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague be dim, and the plague be not spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean: it is a scab; and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

A person gets corrected in the society. If my desires are correct and are focused on the benefit of society, I properly interact with the environment. However, if egoistic desires are suddenly revealed in me, I have to examine them to see whether I can correct them or not. If I can correct them by myself, then it is fine since the Torah says that we constantly err and constantly correct something.

However, if a certain form of ego is revealed in me, I have to be kept away from society since on one hand, I am “drilling a hole in the boat” and can corrupt the environment. However, on the other hand, if, within seven days, I acquire the right attributes with regard to the society and only the plague is not corrected yet, I must wash my clothes, which means to correct myself a little and return to society. It is because the remaining ego is very small, and the society and I can correct this problem.

However, if my ego cannot sustain itself and I am infected with leprosy while being away from society, I must be kept way in a more serious manner. A person in this situation cannot correct himself and mutually cooperate with the society.

Question: Why does the plague become so dark? Is this a sign of a pure state?

Answer: It is because for seven days, I am not under the influence of the society, under the influence of the Light. Everything is very simple.

Identifying The Essence Of My Desires

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Leviticus 13: 9-11: When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought unto the priest. And the priest shall look, and, behold, if there be a white rising in the skin, and it have turned the hair white, and there be quick raw flesh in the rising, it is an old leprosy in the skin of his flesh, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean; he shall not shut him up; for he is unclean.

If there is a state of “the plague of leprosy…and it have turned the hair white,” it is already a problem since a long series of corrections is required. We have to reexamine our desires to see the darkness in them and correct them.

However, if we don’t identify the darkness and perceive everything as white, we lose our sensitivity and cease to feel our ego. This is already leprosy.

There are three diseases that are contagious to all of humanity: psora, syphilis, and sycosis. These are very serious diseases that affect a person’s physiology and his daily life.

What The Mind Doesn’t Do, Time Will

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: When we work with the ego, we constantly deceive it. Is this actually what the Torah says?

Answer: I wouldn’t say that the work with the ego is deception, but it is actually the right way to use it. In itself it is powerless, like a child who gets mad but cannot do anything about it. This is why we were given the Torah so that we can change it. This is the whole idea.

The main thing is to hold on to it. It takes years and sometimes decades. Some of my students who have been studying for 15 years are just starting to grasp it.

My teacher, Rabash, told me how his father Baal HaSulam, who was torn by inner questions, once randomly took a book from his teacher’s bookshelf and opened it. But we know that nothing happens by chance, and it was the book Eitz Hachaim (The Tree of Life) written by the ARI. Although his teacher the Rabbi of Porsov had forbidden him to touch it, he understood that this was exactly what he needed. He had found his book but didn’t know that it would take him 20 years to even begin to understand what it says.

This story left a very strong impression on me, which was almost depressing: “if I am 30 now, it means that I will understand things only when I am 50!”

But on the other hand, it is impossible to stop our evolution and it continues and can even be hastened, but despite our will it takes time since our evolution takes place in this world, in flesh, bones and nerves. The inertia of the corporeal matter pulls us backwards and doesn’t allow us to make the spiritual leap.

All the Kabbalists, no matter who they were, went through theses states. So you have to plant the spiritual seeds inside you.

If evil is revealed somewhere, it is only so that you can purify and change yourself so that you will be able to be “planted in the ground and grow.” At the same time you shouldn’t identify with the negative attributes. You have to exit them and to follow them from the outside. Then you will be able to place yourself under the shower and be cleaned, receive help to be planted in the ground, and ask for more.

Correcting The Last Level

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Tazria), 13:1-13:3: And the Lord spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it become in the skin of his flesh the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests. And the priest shall look upon the plague in the skin of the flesh; and if the hair in the plague be turned white, and the appearance of the plague be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is the plague of leprosy; and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.

A priest (Cohen) is a doctor and he is the level of the upper Light, the Light of Hochma. A person should bring himself to the level of the priest, to rise to the level of the Light of Hochma and then he will see whether there are any flaws in his egoistic desire, or rather vapors of decomposition (miasmas) that are on the level of leprosy.

All the miasmas of the ego that can be cured are emphasized and highlighted by the upper Light and it is actually thanks to their correction that a person ascends and is healed. So only on the level of the priest one can determine if his soul is healthy with the help of the upper Light.

Skin is the most external and the heaviest level of the ego. We know that skin diseases are usually impossible to cure since it is through the skin that the body extracts the toxins of the body. Thanks to its power of self-preservation and the ability to sustain an internal homeostasis, the body tries to get rid of the toxins in it and to extract all the filth through the skin.

A person’s body is made up of a mind, bones, tendons, flesh, and skin. The skin is an organ that exists separately and cannot be corrected since all the toxins and the waste materials from all the internal states are extracted through it.

We, however, attribute everything to nerves. If I have a rash on the skin I am told that it is because I am nervous. What is the connection between the two? It is the skin that suffers.

Question: What is the meaning of “scab or a bright spot shall have the skin of his flesh a rising?”

Answer: It is the revelation of the ego either in making it grow or the opposite in reducing it. When a person doesn’t make the greatest efforts in the right direction, or in other words when you either do too much or don’t do enough with your desires, it is the lack of a Masach (screen) for more or for less.

It is a very complex system, hair “Se-arot” (from Hebrew word meaning “raging”) symbolize a persons’ grudge and anger regarding his egoistic desires to reveal the Creator.

It says: “if the hair in the plague be turned white, and the appearance of the plague be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is the plague of leprosy.” This means that the egoistic desires are so great that they lose all color: What exactly should they yearn for, what should they correct? They descend to a level in which they only want everything for themselves.

In our world the skin is the protective sheath of the body. “… and the appearance of the plague be deeper than the skin of his flesh,” symbolizes that on this level the skin cannot serve as an external protective shield.

From a Kabbalistic perspective the skin is the very last Aviut (thickness), the depth of the desire, but if we correct it, we will be able to correct all the other symptoms.

There are alternative medicine doctors who first examine the patient’s skin, then feel how it breathes and what it smells like, etc. This is a very serious diagnosis.
