The Mechanism of the “Torah and Commandments”

219.03Question: It is said that the Creator has prepared the application of efforts in the Torah and the commandments for us in this world to turn the desire to receive into the desire to bestow. How can we understand this?

Answer: There is a tool with which we can change ourselves from receivers to givers so that we strive to give to another, and not receive from him. This is due to the influence of the Torah and the commandments on us.

The Torah and the commandments are a mechanism that affects us and changes us from recipients to bestowers.

Spiritual Shock

276.02Comment: I am hosting the program “Portraits” in which people tell how they came to the wisdom of Kabbalah, what sufferings they went through, and how they suddenly felt that they had found what they were looking for. Everyone is touched. A person cries and is not ashamed of tears.

My Response: It is because the surrounding light (Ohr Makif) is greater than our Kli (vessel). When it overwhelms you, it causes the state of infancy (Katnut), as we call it. The light shines, but there is no place for it to enter. This is when tears appear, and they drip like the release when something excessive is released from the body.

Tears are also shed in spirituality because you cannot contain this feeling, this shock inside you. This is why tears in Hebrew are called “dmaot,” from the word “dam,” blood. Internality is blood, externality is tears. After all, the feeling that something huge is in front of you overwhelms you. The same thing happens at all the degrees!

Question: Why is it said that tears are the state of smallness (Katnut)?

Answer: Because there is no vessel.

The state of smallness is when you cannot fit into yourself the whole great light that is before you. Then the light comes out in the form of tears. There is no other way you can respond to this huge influence on you.

For the Sake of the Student

528.04Comment: In the show “Dialogues about Kabbalah,” you said that at some point the student and the teacher become like one blood vessel.

My Response: Yes, of course. In principle, the teacher exists for the sake of the student. This is unequivocal.
What are parents for? They give birth to children, raise them, and die. The next generation gives birth, raises children and dies.

Everything exists for a specific purpose.

This goal does not exist at the level of our world. The goal is higher than our world, in the souls.

Naturally, it is the same in the spiritual world, not a single degree exists for its own sake. Everything exists only for the sake of reaching the final state, the ultimate goal: adhesion of all souls with the Creator.

Therefore, the whole life of the teacher is aimed only at preparing the student.

The Best Gift

630.2Question: What kind of gifts should we give to a friend?

Answer: Show him such signs of attention that he understands that you are doing this for the sake of advancing with him to the Creator, to rise together with him.

It can be any kind of gift, expensive or cheap, small, just some kind of token of attention, completely immaterial and insubstantial. It does not matter.

Question: What is the best gift for you?

Answer: I do not need anything material. There is nothing that I would like. The best thing is when the student understands what kind of work I want to see from him and performs it. This is all.

Question: Should he get feedback that this is exactly what you need?

Answer: Yes, I will tell him.

Question: But can you tell him the exact opposite so that the person will not be proud?

Answer: As a rule, I say that I really need it, and I am not lying or flirting. He should be next to me, feel, or even ask me when I need something, for example, to translate something, put together or correct something from the material that the world needs. Nothing else!

If a student wants to please me, he himself must succeed in his advancement, which means to be a teacher, organize groups, and engage in dissemination.

Do Not Reassure Yourself!

527.03An attempt to connect with other people in order to reveal the quality of bestowal and love in oneself, as in the Creator, leads a person to despair that he cannot do it. Accordingly, this state leads him to ask the Creator to connect his heart with other people.

Just sitting and justifying some states that pass through us does not give anything. Many people suffer and are in terrible conditions, but they do not see the right way out of them that would lead to the goal.

Question: As an egoist is it correct to say that my task is not just to justify the Creator for what He does to me, but to come to a “broken heart” when I actively try to acquire the quality of the Creator and despair of not being able to achieve this, and ask the Creator to help me?

Answer: Yes, this is the most correct state. That is why it is said: “There is nothing so whole as a broken heart.”

Question: But how much strength does a person have? It takes years until he turns to the Creator because he is trying to do everything himself.

Answer: Baal HaSulam writes that it may take 20-30 years.

Question: So is this some kind of cumulative process?

Answer: Yes. But do not reassure yourself that it is accumulating. We must go forward and try to achieve this every day.

Where There Is a Will, a Desire Is Found

177.06Question: There is a principle in spiritual work: “Do not give up on mercy.” It turns out that the Creator is waiting until the person cries out. He is waiting for our prayers that will come out of the broken and shattered heart. Who wants to go through such states? Is this the reason that so few people study Kabbalah?

Answer: The merciful and loving Creator about whom it is said that He loves us and wishes only good to everyone. He is the one who brings a person to such states where a person is forced to turn to Him from inevitability and despair.

Why does He have to drive us to this point? It is because we exist in the state opposite to the Creator, in egoism, in the property of receiving. However, the Creator exists in the property opposite to us, in bestowal. Therefore we are polar opposites.

Thus, we can get closer to the Creator only if we change, or try, or at least want to change, our egoistic desires to receive into altruistic desires to give.

Independence of a Group

530Question: You say that being physically in a group does not mean that a person is really in it. Does it mean that this is not a criterion?

Answer: Of course. The desire for connection is the criterion.

Question: How should one treat the friends in the group? I do not know if they want to connect or not? A person can sit silently and that is it.

Answer: Yes, it is difficult to understand. But there are various indications whether he is included in the work along with the rest.

By nature, we are all different: phlegmatic, choleric, etc. Is it possible to say that a choleric person is directed forward more than a phlegmatic person? This is just the way they express themselves externally. Internally, both can be with the same desire, but one will be speaking slowly and doing something, while the other will be rushing from corner to corner. So what? How can you evaluate this?

Question: But the evaluation itself is not to bring them under any category. Let’s say there are criteria: an internal group, a young group, and some other layers. Who generally makes decisions, and how is a person’s readiness established?

Answer: I do not know. It is none of my business because it is a group. They have a teacher, this is me, and together with them we analyze the sources, the articles of Rabash, who wrote a lot on this topic. They know these sources and have repeatedly gone through all the articles. Now let them implement them.

I only set general lines or inspire students to take some action. I cannot tell them how to do that exactly. They must do everything themselves.

No Need for Suffering!

507.05Comment: Usually when moralizing a person doesn’t help, he can be greatly influenced by the example of others.

My Response: Yes, only by example. That is right. Kabbalah uses it. The whole methodology comes from Kabbalah. That is why we need a society, a group, and friends.

Comment: It is not punishment that works, but an example, as you see the selfless work of others and you feel ashamed.

My Response: Yes. Shame, envy, and jealousy are good qualities. It feels like others succeed more than you, which spurs you on to good deeds.

You do hate, but you hate yourself, your own laziness. Then everything goes through its stages of development in a completely different way. How can we make the world feel it sooner before the blows because we have a very serious rod ahead hanging over us? I pity the people.

Advancement through suffering lengthens time. Imagine if the entire Second World War could have been passed in a week of intensive world congress with good interactions, inspiration, and everything else.

Why was such tremendous suffering necessary? We simply have no idea how to fit all this within ourselves; we cannot imagine it.

Question: Are the impressions we receive from suffering useful or not at all?

Answer: They are useful, but they come in a very painful way. Very small impressions that in practice do not lead to the right conclusions. What right conclusions have we come to after the Second World War? None.

Question: And if it had been a result of a week-long congress, would we have received the same impressions without suffering?

Answer: There is no need for suffering! It is not necessary. Only advancement toward better and better. We should advance only toward goodness.

Division into Source and Effect

243.05The branch desires, loves, and covets every conduct in the root, and does not tolerate and hates any conduct that is not in the root.

This is an unbreakable law that applies to every branch and its root (Baal HaSulam, The Study of the Ten Sefirot, Part 1, Inner Observation, Chapter 4, Item 19).

Question: The Creator, who is the desire to bestow and not to receive, is our root. Yet we, who are a branch of this root, do not like to bestow and to unite. Where is the logic here?

Answer: We are the product of this consequence. Here happens the division into source and effect. Our source bestows, emanates, loves, and develops. And we are His consequence. This is why we love everything we receive from Him. We want to receive everything pleasant from Him, but we do not want to receive His qualities.

It turns out that we do not want to acquire His qualities, but we want what He fulfills us with.

Books that Attract the Upper Light

209Question: How can we who are so small suddenly move the worlds? You said that when a little child just gives a cry, his mother immediately runs up to him and does whatever he wants.

Answer: Yes, the smallest is the strongest.

Question: Even those who are just starting their advancement?

Answer: But they are doing it! They want to get in touch with the Creator. Yes, they are the strongest.

Even though they do not understand anything, like a baby who is lying in a cradle and screaming. The baby does not even realize that he is crying—he is just in pain, and this is a natural scream. He does not realize that in this way one can call a mother who will come and give him something. He has no understanding of the chain of actions he invokes. He is screaming because it is a natural reaction to what is happening to him.

Question: Can we say that someone who is trying to read, for example, the Torah or Kabbalistic sources, begins to give this cry?

Answer: Yes, of course. But not just to read, especially the Torah. The Torah will not help here. One needs either The Book of Zohar or some other Kabbalistic books.

Comment: But I mean not the external principle of reading, but the internal one—the search for oneself, the search for what is inside me.

My Response: No, besides this, a book that can evoke the upper light most brightly is needed. The Book of Zohar is the most effective one.

Question: That is, your advice is to read without understanding?

Answer: That is my advice because I went through this with Rabash. That is my advice because this is how it works. We used to read The Book of Zohar for only half an hour in the evening before going to bed. And it was just reading without any comments.

There were 20 people sitting around the table with Rabash at the head, and for half an hour we took turns reading: the first one, then the second, the third, and so on. So, we read a page or two, and went home. This is how the day ended.

But when Rabash and I studied alone on trips, in personal conversations or lessons, there was a different attitude. We came to the park, walked around, and then sat down on a bench. I pulled out a book, and we discussed the book or just talked for about two hours. After that, we again walked around and went home. And so it was for 12 years.
