Questions about Spiritual Work—232

281.02Question: Let’s say a ten is working to reach a state of faith above reason. What is the correct path: to reach a state where faith above reason becomes absolutely perfect or to strive to attain upper reason?

Answer: In principle, both are necessary. That is why I cannot say specifically what exactly this ten needs. To answer that, one would need to know them more closely.

Question: If I see my friends as great, corrected, loving, and helpful, does that bring us closer to the Creator?

Answer: Yes.

“Fuel” for Fulfilling Arvut

237Question: What will give us the fuel to strive for fulfilling the condition of mutual guarantee (Arvut)?

Answer: The fuel is above in the surrounding light. If you are not talking about deficiencies, but about what can serve as support, then support exists only in the light. You won’t find support in the Kli.

You might ask: “If there’s no support in the Kli, then what is this mutual guarantee that I’m in together with the other vessels? Who are they? They’re just like me!”

That’s true. But precisely through this you reveal the light. What does Baal HaSulam say? That from the moment we desire for it to happen, we begin to receive a covering, a screen over our will to receive that gives us the feeling that we don’t need to worry about ourselves. A feeling of confidence appears that I won’t lack anything.

Where does such confidence come from? Are my friends really ready to fill me, to satisfy my needs? They don’t fill me at all, and they can’t! Maybe in my group everyone is spiritually “impoverished”! It doesn’t matter. I receive compensation, a covering from above, a feeling that I lack nothing. This is the force of the light!

Sometimes we experience great inspiration. That same kind of inspiration you receive in a permanent and absolute form, and it silences the will to receive. You begin to understand that the will to receive was simply teasing you, it didn’t really need anything; it was just constantly prodding you. And now, it has gone quiet and you’re free.

Question: That’s when Arvut is already revealed. But until then? From the initial moment up to that point?

Answer: Even between the beginning and that point, you receive support and advancement solely through the light! The light and nothing else! Stop expecting to find anything inside the Kelim! Arvut itself and all the stages leading up to it are attained only by means of the light!

That’s why Baal HaSulam says that the most important thing is the quality of effort during the study so that you study in order to draw the light that will change you. Only in it will you find strength.

Dependence and Influence

528.04Question: Am I dependent on the thoughts of my friends or on my belief that they are thinking about me?

Answer: On one hand, I am dependent on the thoughts of others, on what my friends think about me.

On the other hand, if I am in a state of ascent, I can affect my friends more than they affect me because in my ascent I am above the group. And in such moments, I can have a greater impact on it.

Clarifications and Corrections

276.02Question: In striving to achieve mutual guarantee, is it possible that we are directing too much effort outward instead of acting within ourselves?

Answer: This might be valid if we didn’t find in practice that engaging in external dissemination unites us, gives us confidence, strength, and upliftment, which we receive back from the communities we serve.

By building something outwardly, we thereby build ourselves. It is impossible to say what the correct balance should be. We try. This, essentially, is a kind of action called “we will do and we will hear.”

We see that we are constantly undergoing changes. One must act according to the understanding of one’s state. What else can we do? This is our path, because seeking and discovering is that practical work through which we carry out clarifications and corrections.

To aspire toward the final state is good. But by discovering different things now and performing tiny actions, we generate details of perception without which the end of correction cannot be felt.

The difference between the end of correction and the beginning of creation lies only in the added details of our perception (Avchanot), which we collect along the way.

You return to the same state, only inside yourself you become more diverse and more refined; more opposite details of perception and distinguishable inner qualities appear within you.

This is what allows you, instead of being a point merged with the Creator as you once were, to become a Partzuf and truly existing on His level.

Practical Actions that Lead to Mutual Guarantee

938.04Question: How can we distribute our efforts in the most effective way so that they lead us to mutual guarantee by the shortest route? What practical actions should we perform?

Answer: We see that these actions lie in such areas as study, support for the existence of the inner group, and external dissemination. All these things relate to the practical part and are the means for us to achieve the realization of mutual guarantee among ourselves. And if someone thinks that there is any other means, then we must check whether this is so.

Ultimately the goal is one: for a group of students drawn to spirituality to understand that they are obliged to achieve mutual guarantee. This obligation must become a necessity to such an extent that it really attracts the light from above, which will correct them and lead them to the level of mutual guarantee. This is called “we shall do and we shall hear.” We are ready to do anything, if only this condition is realized in us.

The Channel of Connection with the Creator

939.01Comment: I have a feeling that each of us has their own channel of connection with the Creator.

My Response: Yes.

Question: Should we examine the channel of connection that our friends have?

Answer: That’s none of your business. Disconnect from that thought. Be yourself, and on that level try to be with the entire ten.

The Merit of the Fathers

631.3The purpose of creation is intended for all souls—each individually and all together. However, it is impossible for everyone to attain this goal collectively because in some people the condition of Arvut (Mutual Guarantee) is initially unable to awaken immediately; it can only emerge after the prior work done by other souls.

Baal HaSulam writes that the forefathers did not need the condition of Arvut because their souls were subtle, and due to their exaltedness and purity, they were already in Dvekut (Adhesion) with the Creator without performing practical actions, that is, without carrying out preliminary corrections or fulfilling commandments.

They did not need to reach the condition of “we shall do and we shall hear” because by virtue of their subtlety, their souls were originally ready to exist in mutual guarantee without making the efforts that are required from us with our coarse Aviut.

Due to their purity, subtle souls receive the Torah, and the mutual guarantee is realized within them. This leads to the fulfillment of the condition “love your neighbor as yourself.” Then the light of the Torah clothes within them and they dwell in adhesion with the Creator.

After our forefathers attained this, the merit of the fathers arose for the sons. In other words, those souls that are now capable of joining the subtle souls with their more coarse Aviut use these pure souls by means of connection and mutual inclusion.

Therefore, the law of mutual guarantee is also realized for them, but only after performing certain work, prior actions. What are these actions? Everything that can lead them to the condition of mutual guarantee.

And once they attain this, they merit receiving the Torah, that is, the light, the system of correction of their Aviut for the purpose of achieving the principle “love your neighbor as yourself” when the Creator will already dwell in their common Kli (vessel).

For receiving the Torah, it is enough to fulfill the condition “we shall do and we shall hear,” that is, the agreement that the power of mutual guarantee should exist so that we should want to fulfill it, so that this ability would come from above. And upon receiving the power of the Torah, we begin to carry it out, and then we become “as one man with one heart” and a single Kli (vessel). We merit receiving the Torah, and then we must fulfill it, that is, begin the corrections.

According to the Opinion of the Group

528.03Question: Suppose I am able to feel a certain quality within myself and I call it Moses. To what extent can I rely on this Moses to lead me where I need to go?

Answer: To what extent can one believe in or surrender to their own thoughts and decisions? After all, I label part of my thoughts as facts, another part as doubts, and some as lies. And it all constantly changes within me.

The fact is that testing the validity of these perceptions depends, first of all, on my discernment according to the principle of truth and falsehood rather than bitter and sweet.

The first real discernment in order to act based on truth versus falsehood rather than bitter versus sweet happens only when a person restricts their desires after receiving the force of Arvut (mutual guarantee).

Before that one cannot trust oneself in anything. And certainly, all decisions and judgments made before that are erroneous.

So what should he do? He should go according to the opinion of the group. He must understand that he has no understanding of his own, that he is completely mistaken, and that he must accept the knowledge of the group. This is what it means to go above reason.

We are talking about the group in relation to which he has decided that he will advance in accordance with what he receives from it. But first a person must understand that if he wants to rise above the animate level and begin a certain kind of development, he must submit to some external guidance.

Then he chooses a group that conveys its direction to him. He accepts from the group its opinions, intentions, decisions, view of life, everything necessary, and surrenders himself to it. This means that a person goes above his own reason following what the group dictates. In doing so, he triumphs over all the other forces in his life that deliberately confuse him so that he may reach this discernment.

How Can You Accept the Opinion of the Group?

527Question: How can a person bring themselves to accept the opinion of the group by force?

Answer: This is the most difficult question. How can a person, with all their accumulated qualities, powers, and traits, accept the direction of the group? How can they do this every moment in accordance with their development, when they are within a group? Where is that button you can press so that the engine does not stop?

This is exactly what we must do. Where can you find the strength to listen to the group, submit to it, and receive from it what it gives? This is precisely what you must force yourself to do each time. This is called “buy yourself a friend.”

But the group is not just friends. “Haver” (friend) is an equal, from the word “Hibur” (connection). The group is also the teacher, something that dictates to you what to do, something whose opinion you must accept above your own.

Study the articles of Rabash about the group, and perhaps you will find advice on how to truly bow your head and receive this idea from the group.

Correct Development

942If we are developing correctly and feel that we want to unite but are unable to do so by ourselves, then a third factor enters the picture—the Creator.

It is not just me and the group; He must be present within it. He must be the goal for me. He must become the performer of the action, and this is a sign of correct development.

By desiring to unite with the group, I thereby create a Kli within which He must dwell.

I am ready to give myself over to it, but what I currently lack is the understanding of the necessity for this to be for the sake of the Creator, so that the Creator will dwell within this connection.

The lack of this understanding comes from the fact that He is concealed.

But soon, from the suffering, from understanding the necessity, it will be revealed that He must be here. When these three factors: me, the group, and the Creator merge as one, it will happen.
